Enjoy the scenery of Kyoto and Amanohashidate in a single-story wooden Sukiya-style pavilion.

Monjuso Shourotei is a charming single-story wooden accommodation nestled on a small cape, surrounded by aged trees behind the Wisdom Monju-do Hall. Beyond the lush garden lies the serene waters of Aso Sea and the picturesque pine forest of Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three most scenic views. Experience the ever-changing beauty of Japan's nature through different times of day and seasons in this tranquil retreat far removed from worldly noise. Beloved by many literary figures, this accommodation was named "Shourotei" by writer Giichi Fujimoto, who reflected on "the dew that forms on the tips of Amanohashidate’s pine leaves and how it deepens human connections at this travel lodge." The late author Hitoshi Yamaguchi also praised Shourotei in his book "Favorite Places," describing it as "completely flat and peaceful. That flatness seems to stretch endlessly. When 'flatness' comes to mind, I feel calm and relaxed... Every Japanese person should experience that perfectly flat scenery at least once."

  • This was my first time visiting Amanohashidate, and thanks to all the staff, I had a truly wonderful stay. The Room—including the semi-open-air bath, comfortable changing area, spacious Japanese-style room, living area, and bedroom—was spotless and could not have been better. Everyone on the staff was kind and approachable. The meals were also excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a private dining room with an ocean view, where we could relax and enjoy the sunset and evening atmosphere, as well as the sunrise in the morning. Every dish was carefully prepared, with gentle seasoning that we really appreciated. If there is one point for improvement, it would be that the bath water temperature felt a bit lukewarm. For the open-air bath in the Room, it would have been nice to be able to adjust the temperature. If I simply missed an operation panel, I apologize.I would love to visit again if I have the chance. Thank you very much.

  • The sukiya-style Room was beautifully appointed, and the view from the Room was wonderful. The bath overlooking the sea was also very comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, with gentle, comforting flavors. I ordered charcoal-grilled abalone, which may have been extra work, but it was prepared with great care. The tableware was elegant and a pleasure to admire as well. The Shuttle Service staff were also very kind, making this an unforgettable stay. Thank you very much.
