[Opening November 5, 2024] "Hotel Utano Kyoto Villa" is located just a short drive from the famous sightseeing spots of Kyoto, including Arashiyama, the World Heritage Sites of Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji, and Ninna-ji, as well as the scenic Kinukake-no-Michi walking path. With only 10 guest rooms, each featuring a private Onsen bath, our accommodations include options such as Narutaki Main Building showcasing traditional Shoin-zukuri and Sukiya-style architecture; an Art Deco-inspired Western-style building; and rooms that blend warm Japanese aesthetics with contemporary Western design. Meals are served in a dining area overlooking a Japanese garden. Enjoy dishes crafted with fresh seafood from Awaji Island alongside carefully selected ingredients from Kyoto and surrounding regions. Our cuisine focuses on Japanese flavors while embracing diverse culinary styles beyond specific categories. The property also features approximately 1,000 tsubo (about 3,300 square meters) of serene space with a recreated garden originally designed by renowned landscape architect Mirei Shigemori.   • It was the best family trip.

    We stayed here for a family trip with my parents.At check-in, the staff explained the building while we enjoyed the beautiful garden view, which helped us understand the Accommodation even better. The welcome sweets and tea we were served were also delicious.As I am pregnant, I mentioned that I was avoiding caffeine, raw foods, and alcohol. They kindly switched the coffee prepared in our Room to decaf, provided non-caffeinated sword bean tea, and changed the tea served with meals to black soybean tea. I was truly impressed by their warm hospitality.Dinner was excellent as well. They even accommodated me with a separate menu, and I really appreciated their thoughtful attention to detail. Every dish was delicious, the portions were just right, and it was a wonderful meal overall.The private Onsen in our Room could be enjoyed 24 hours a day whenever we liked, which was fantastic.My parents seemed very satisfied too. This was our last family trip before our baby arrives, and we are truly glad we chose to stay here.Once things settle down, we would love to return and stay in a different Room as well.

  • An amazing, great-value Accommodation

    Many Accommodations in Kyoto feel overpriced, but this Accommodation was truly reasonably priced, with beautiful views, and we were able to relax and fully enjoy our stay.The staff’s hospitality was excellent, and we really appreciated all their thoughtful care.The amenities were safe to use even for sensitive skin, and the Onsen water quality was great!This time we booked No Meals Included, but next time we’d love to enjoy the meals as well. It’s an Accommodation we’d definitely like to return to.

    Registered as a “Registered Tangible Cultural Property” by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.

    Hotel Utano Kyoto Besso has been recommended to the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for registration as a Tangible Cultural Property following deliberation and approval by the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Council for Cultural Affairs / Subcommittee on Cultural Properties on Friday, July 18, Reiwa 7 (2025). The recommendation covers four elements of Hotel Utano Kyoto Besso (formerly the Owatari Residence): the Main House, Main Gate, Service Gate, and Inner Gate.

    Opened in November Reiwa 6 (2024), Hotel Utano Kyoto Besso is a travelers’ villa reborn as an Accommodation through the renovation of a valuable historic building originally constructed in 1939 (Showa 14) as the residence of Mr. Mitsuzo Owatari, a prominent business leader who served as an executive of Kyoto Electric Light Company.

    From the main building in Shoin-zukuri style and an annex with Sukiya design to a Western-style wing with Spanish-inspired exterior architecture—and a dining space renewed from a grand hall overlooking the garden—the property’s original character has been preserved as much as possible. While valuing both preservation and active use, we will continue striving to provide guests from Japan and abroad with truly special experiences.

    Enjoy moments that inspire reflection on history and culture while indulging in the luxury of Onsen.
