    Tsubaki: Returning After 10 Years

    It is very disappointing, but after staying here for the first time in 10 years, I felt that the hospitality has significantly declined. First of all, upon check-in, there were a large number of small insects in the room and even a giant centipede in the dressing area. The room was changed as there was availability, but if it had been fully booked, it would have been impossible to dine or stay in that room. (Additionally, there was no particular apology at checkout either, which left me quite disheartened.) Furthermore, the staff member at the parking lot upon arrival had poor Japanese skills and did not offer to hold an umbrella despite having one on hand while it was raining. What purpose did they serve? I understand that Japanese can be difficult for non-native speakers and learning customs at a Japanese Ryokan can be challenging. However, I felt this level of service is not acceptable for a Ryokan of this standard to present to guests. The staff who guided us to our room entered the elevator before us and exited first without holding the door or waiting for us; they just kept walking ahead. While it's fine if they exit first, such behavior feels out of place at a high-end traditional Ryokan like this. At dinner time when I asked about the brand of glass wine being served, I waited over 20 minutes only to be told that no one knew because no knowledgeable staff were available. It wasn’t even a specialized question—surely showing me the bottle from which it was poured would have sufficed? The meal itself was neither particularly good nor bad. The open-air bath attached to our room had nice ambiance and as a facility itself was good; however hygiene issues such as dust accumulating on hairdryers caught my attention. Perhaps focusing solely on inbound tourists might make this level acceptable; however Japanese guests likely choose high-end Ryokans expecting much better hospitality than what we experienced here. While labor shortages or work style reforms may pose challenges for Ryokans from their perspective—it’s still deeply disappointing overall.

    Okuyugawara Onsen Ryokan with Traditional Japanese Cuisine

    We stayed as a couple during the middle of Golden Week. The room with an open-air bath had a separate bedroom, allowing us to relax and unwind in great comfort. I have always loved the soft texture of Yugawara's water, but this time we chose this accommodation for its dining experience—and it was absolutely the right choice. Surrounded by fresh greenery, we enjoyed the peaceful and relaxing large public bath, while the open-air bath in our room was always kept at just the right temperature, allowing us to soak whenever we pleased. The Onsen experience was truly satisfying, and the meals exceeded our expectations, leaving us smiling with delight. The staff members were attentive and provided heartfelt hospitality that made our stay even more special. It turned out to be a rewarding trip that helped us recharge from daily fatigue. While not flashy or extravagant, this accommodation offers a warm atmosphere created by everyone there—a place where you can feel at ease. We will definitely return again!

    Admired Tsubaki

    I finally had the chance to stay at the accommodation I had wanted to visit for 30 years. Everything exceeded my expectations. The meals were carefully prepared, and you could feel the attention to detail in every dish. The bath and room were beyond what I had hoped for. The staff greeted us with kind smiles, which made me think it must be a wonderful workplace. Upon departure, I received a heartfelt letter from the staff member in charge, which made me very happy. I look forward to visiting again in a different season and meeting everyone once more. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Experience the charm of a Japanese Ryokan.

    Although there were some critical reviews, my stay was truly satisfying, whether due to improvements or good fortune. The beautifully maintained Japanese garden and sukiya-style architecture, seasonal decorations and furnishings, soothing onsen, exquisite kaiseki cuisine, and attentive yet unobtrusive service made me appreciate the charm of a traditional Japanese ryokan once again. The path leading to "Tsubaki" is surrounded by trees and exudes the serene atmosphere of a mountain retreat. Beyond the building lies a walking trail along the clear stream of Ryutaku. In addition to camellias—the symbol of Tsubaki—cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, autumn leaves, and other seasonal trees are planted here. Visitors can also enjoy a Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage. During my visit in springtime, I was captivated by pale pink cherry blossoms in full bloom alongside budding greenery as well as magnolias in full bloom and lingering camellias. I stayed in the main building's "Utsusemi" room where a white camellia arrangement adorned the alcove—perhaps inspired by its name. The garden outside featured an impressive tree with bare branches providing a backdrop for another striking camellia tree extending over the pond. The natural growth of these trees added an untamed charm to their beauty. A wooden deck reached close to the pond where vibrant red-and-gold koi swam gracefully beneath it. At nightfall under soft lighting effects highlighting sturdy trunks reflected on water surfaces combined with rhythmic rain sounds created an almost primeval forest-like ambiance (though perhaps slightly exaggerated). Immersing myself into this unique atmosphere while soaking outdoors before bedtime felt magical until suddenly all lights went out plunging everything into darkness—a fleeting moment that left only memories come morning when daylight revealed nothing but serene views over small picturesque gardens instead. Meals showcased seasonal themes presented beautifully both visually through dishes' designs paired harmoniously alongside flavors enhanced further via four types pairing drinks including sake champagne wine combinations daringly chosen yet complementing courses perfectly overall capturing essence behind “Spring Smiles at Yugawara.” However noticeable wear around sliding door frames indicated aging facilities requiring attention preserving invaluable qualities defining "Tsubaki." After checking out amidst light drizzles during flower-chilled weather exploring nearby Manyo Park brought renewed energy leaving me feeling refreshed rather than fatigued thanks largely due restorative experience provided throughout stay inspiring plans revisit someday rediscover alternative facets hidden within allure offered exclusively here!

    Exceptional hospitality

    This is my second stay. I was satisfied with both the room's bath and the large public Onsen. The meals were elaborate and delicious. It was the same staff member as last time, and I deeply appreciate that they offered the same appetizer in front of my daughter's memorial photo again this time. As expected from someone who used to work at a top Ryokan in Kawaguchiko Onsen in the past. I will stay again during firefly season next time. Thank you very much!

    If only the service were good.

    This was an accommodation I had wanted to stay at for a long time. While the property showed some age and the large public bath was a bit far from the room, the onsen and lounge were excellent. I also appreciated the special service provided when I mentioned it was a celebratory occasion. The only disappointment was with the service provided by our assigned attendant. During meal explanations, they used their fingers to remove decorative leaves covering ingredients right in front of us, and opened each small lidded dish to explain its contents before taking them away entirely. While I understand my perspective might differ, especially considering COVID-19 concerns, it felt uncomfortable seeing an attendant directly handle items that had already been served to guests. Additionally, I've never experienced attendants opening all lids (except for hot pot dishes) and removing them before guests could enjoy discovering what’s inside themselves at other accommodations. Another issue occurred during both dinner and breakfast when they pushed the rice container towards my wife saying, "Please serve yourselves." In our household, tasks like this are shared equally regardless of gender; this gesture felt outdated as if implying food preparation is solely a woman’s responsibility. While conversations with this attendant were pleasant overall and there seemed to be no ill intent on their part, these experiences left me feeling uneasy about returning—especially given that it wasn’t an inexpensive stay—and wondering if we might encounter similar issues again with the same staff member in charge. On a positive note, other staff members including those at reception and international team members were professional and welcoming. However, due to these mixed feelings about our experience overall, we may not revisit for some time despite its appeal otherwise.

    Perfect for an adult parent-child trip!

    This was a trip with my elderly mother, and it was truly an accommodation for adults. The spacious room with stunning views from the window, the soft-textured onsen open-air bath, the exquisite dishes crafted with care and visual beauty, and the warm hospitality with thoughtful attention to detail made this a wonderful ryokan we would love to visit again. It would be even more comfortable if the shower temperature in the room could be adjusted. Both my mother and I were extremely satisfied and enjoyed a relaxing and luxurious time.

    An accommodation with exceptional hospitality and attention to detail

    We stayed at this accommodation last autumn with our relatives and were extremely satisfied with the warm hospitality of Ms. F, the delicious meals, and the cleanliness of the accommodation. This spring, we stayed again with the same group. When we placed a photo of our aunt, who passed away in December, on the table, they thoughtfully prepared a wonderful symbolic meal in her honor. We were deeply moved by Ms. F and the head chef's attention to detail and kindness—it was truly touching to experience such care at this accommodation. The next morning's breakfast also included another beautifully prepared symbolic meal for our late aunt, which surprised us once again! Of course, there was no additional charge for this thoughtful gesture. Thank you so much to Ms. F and the head chef for your incredible hospitality. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again!

    Revenge.

    This was my first time staying in a Room equipped with an open-air Onsen and a massage chair. There was also a large TV in front of the spacious bed, making it the perfect Room for me. I enjoyed warming up in the Onsen, relaxing with a massage, and lounging while watching TV. Since it was a guesthouse Room, it was conveniently close to the public bath and lounge where I could enjoy Häagen-Dazs ice cream and plum wine while cooling down at my own pace. However, since the lounge opens at 9 AM, it felt insufficient for someone like me who enjoys early morning baths. The view from the open-air Onsen in this Room wasn't as much to my liking compared to those in the main building, but the lush green maple leaves right before my eyes were still beautiful. Dinner had seasonal touches and looked exquisite, while breakfast featuring grilled saikyo-style flounder and pork miso soup was delicious.

    How many more visits are needed?

    How many more stays will it take for my name to be remembered correctly? My name was mispronounced both during the welcome outside and when being shown to the room. This has happened before, so I finally pointed it out, only to hear, "Oh dear, the guest is upset!" I've stayed here over 10 times, but this was by far the most unpleasant experience. It's hard to express how frustrating it is to feel this way right upon arrival—it seems there's a complete lack of empathy. In the past, despite being a repeat guest, I’ve been asked several times if it’s my first stay at Tsuruya. Even business hotels these days manage and store basic information like names and stay history. That said, there are staff members who provide excellent service—those who served dinner and breakfast, prepared our futons (perhaps an international staff member?), or worked in the shop were all wonderful. However, there seem to be too many people here without an awareness that they themselves shape whether guests leave with a good or bad impression of Tsuruya. This accommodation is a favorite of my parents’, and while the meals are exceptionally delicious, I don’t want to repeatedly have such unpleasant experiences here. For that reason alone, I won’t recommend this place to friends or acquaintances.

    Parents' birthdays

    This was our first visit. We reserved two rooms with open-air baths. Both were spacious, luxurious, and very quiet, allowing us to enjoy a comfortable stay. When we informed the staff in advance about our parents' birthdays, the head chef prepared spring-inspired dishes for dinner, and the attendant presented camellia-themed towels as a celebratory gift. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the attendants were truly wonderful. It became a memorable birthday celebration trip. Thank you very much!

    The Ultimate Hospitality

    The Facility is slightly aged, but the hospitality is top-notch. Staff anticipate your needs, even regarding souvenirs and transportation, and offer assistance proactively. I felt very comfortable during my stay. The meals were exceptionally delicious. Highly recommended for those who enjoy traditional accommodations. I plan to visit again in a different season.     It was a wonderful experience.

    Perhaps due to the historic building or the tranquility of Oku-Yugawara, I was able to relax deeply. The accommodation is spacious and very quiet, and (partly because meals are served in-room) I hardly encountered other guests. The wonderful cuisine also seemed healthy for the body. The private bath attached to the room was excellent as well. Aside from a small step in the room, every detail was thoughtfully designed for comfort, giving an impression of a historic yet modern accommodation. It is one of the few accommodations I would love to visit again!

    A wonderful Ryokan i...

    A wonderful Ryokan in Oku-Yugawara. We enjoyed a relaxing stay in a detached room with an open-air bath, delicious meals, and the warm hospitality of the staff. The hot spring water of Yugawara is gentle on the skin, and we absolutely love it. While the large public bath is excellent, soaking in the private open-air bath while listening to the murmuring river and watching trees swaying in the breeze was truly relaxing. Amenities include MIKIMOTO and L'Occitane products, along with everything else you might need during your stay. The meals are delicate, beautifully presented, seasonal, and incredibly delicious. Thanks to Ms. I's attentive service during our meal time, we felt at ease and were able to relax deeply from within. This is a highly recommended Ryokan that we would love to visit again someday! Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience!

    An Elegant and Traditional Ryokan

    We stayed here to celebrate my mother-in-law's 88th birthday. It was a trip with four elderly travelers in their 90s, 80s, 70s, and 60s, but every dish was delicious and we finished everything. We are also grateful for the special celebratory dish from the head chef. All the staff we met were pleasant and made our stay very comfortable. I had known about Tsubaki for a long time and always wanted to stay here once, and it truly lived up to my expectations as a wonderful accommodation. Thank you for providing us with a relaxing and peaceful time. We look forward to visiting again in another season!

    Experience an extraordinary escape to another world.

    I stayed at the dreamlike Ryokan Tsubaki. The enchanting scenery of Oku-Yugawara is truly picturesque. The meals were absolutely stunning, featuring exquisite ingredients carefully selected from the whole country, both visually appealing and deeply moving. The rice served at breakfast was so delicious that I finished every bite. However, as such a renowned Ryokan, there are a few points I would like to mention. Upon arrival, only one young man was there to greet us. While he greeted us in hesitant Japanese, it might have been better to be welcomed by women in traditional kimono attire instead. After dinner, I was surprised when the same attendant who had been cheerfully serving us came to prepare our futon bedding; perhaps this task could have been handled by the young man who greeted us earlier instead. When we checked out and were leaving, only one senior attendant waved goodbye to us. Overall, I felt that the quality of hospitality had noticeably declined during my stay. I heard during my visit that management has changed recently—perhaps this is reflecting those changes directly?

    Quiet and Relaxing

    Despite being a long-established ryokan, the large public bath was somehow available for private use, allowing for a relaxing stay. The service provided by Ms. Ishioka, the attendant, was excellent, and we enjoyed our meals comfortably. The room felt spacious beyond our needs. Although it wasn't possible this time, it made me want to visit again with my parents—an excellent accommodation overall.

    The front desk service is terrible.

    I made a reservation thinking it was a top-class ryokan, but the service was terrible. After arrival, they carried my luggage to the room, but there were unfamiliar belongings inside. It turned out they had mistakenly brought another guest's luggage to my room. I immediately contacted the front desk to have them retrieve it, but such mistakes should not happen even at a third-rate ryokan, let alone one charging high-end prices. Furthermore, I made purchases at the shop and was told I would receive them at checkout for some reason. At checkout, nothing was mentioned by the ryokan staff about this purchase from last night until I brought it up and received an "Eh?" response followed by "Please wait," after which I completed payment. While waiting for my purchased items, a male staff member asked if there was anything else needed; when I said I'd like to receive what I'd bought from the shop he explained "later." Checkout means leaving so what does "later" mean? Frustrated with this explanation over trivial items anyway decided against receiving them before departing from Ryokan altogether. An elderly Nakai-san chased after me managing somehow deliver those goods though still found their handling unacceptable. Naturally no send-off either. The food showed creativity yet private open-air bath felt like an afterthought on balcony possibly using circulation system instead of free-flowing water. Facility felt old lacking any sense of luxury; age and tradition are different things entirely. Air conditioning too hot regardless temperature adjustments while turning off left room cold instead Only saving grace being assigned Nakai-san who did well Response likely outsourced professional company ending simply thanking valuable feedback

    Beautiful Skin Hot Spring

    We visited the long-awaited Yugawara for our wedding anniversary. As it was a guesthouse, we were able to spend time leisurely on a special floor without encountering many people. The beautifying hot spring made our skin smooth, and we were healed by soaking in the open-air bath in the Room multiple times. Thanks to the pleasant service of the staff, we were able to enjoy a comfortable meal in the Room, making it a wonderful anniversary. We would definitely like to visit again during the plum blossom season.

    The dinner we were looking forward to was quite disappointing, possibly due to a shortage of staff, as it wasn't particularly crowded, yet everything was half-cold. The miso soup was lukewarm at best, and the rice seemed like it had been cooked a long time ago. The sashimi also lacked freshness. However, the breakfast was delicious and warm, which was a relief.

    It was a long-established Ryokan with a calm atmosphere.

    As a resident of Tokyo, I have always admired Yugawara as an onsen town favored by discerning adults for its convenient access and lack of overcrowding. I hope to find a "regular Stays" that suits me in Yugawara. Tsubaki is one of the luxurious Properties I admire, and I was able to stay there this time thanks to a great Plan I found. The hospitality and service were impeccable, and the clientele of overseas group travelers was pleasant, so there was no unpleasant experience. I also enjoyed the sake and Haagen-Dazs service in the lounge. The open-air bath in the Room and the large public bath were just the right temperature for a relaxing experience. Being located in Oku-Yugawara, the view from the Room's window was of a deep, lush green forest, providing the ultimate healing experience. I stayed in a separate Room called Saioubo, and it was a bit inconvenient to have to change footwear to use the toilet and washroom (it felt like I had to go down to the dirt floor each time), and there were many stairs inside the building, which might be tough if you're not confident in your legs (sweat). Nevertheless, overall satisfaction was very high, and I hope to have the opportunity to revisit while I'm still energetic (laugh). Thank you very much!

    The food was delicious, and I was able to enjoy a quiet time.

    I visited during the quiet period in December. Unexpectedly, it was the season for autumn leaves, and the view of the mountains from the lounge was beautiful. I enjoyed both the open-air Onsen in the Room and the large public bath. The water was smooth with little odor, but it warmed my body to the core and allowed me to relax. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were extremely delicious. I think the portions were slightly adjusted, but they were just enough to fill me up, and I was satisfied with the simple yet beautifully crafted menu that brought out the flavors of the ingredients. The rice was also delicious, and although I usually don't eat much rice, I ended up having seconds. I would like to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much.

    Since we are a famil...

    Since we are a family of adults, we used this Ryokan for the first time to enjoy a quiet and relaxing stay in a room with an open-air bath and in-room dining. The interior was calm and clean, and the service gave the impression of a traditional Japanese Ryokan. I dislike modern service Ryokans, so choosing this one was the right decision. It was nice to be able to use the lounge with a good view. I think it would be nice if it could be used after bathing in the evening. The Onsen was not crowded, allowing for a relaxing soak. The private dressing table was also nice. It was convenient not to have to bring a bath towel from the room when using the large public bath. The meals were delicious, but the pairing of red wine and white wine was served in the wrong order. It seemed that the attendant made a mistake, possibly due to inexperience. Other than that, the attendant was pleasant, and I hope they gain more experience. I didn't ask about the amenity service, so I only noticed it just before leaving. If it had been mentioned at check-in, I might not have forgotten to receive it. It was unfortunate that the garden walking path was unusable due to last year's heavy rain. I would like to take a walk next time I visit. I have used various Onsen Ryokans, and overall, this one was very good, and I would definitely like to use it again.

    It was a wonderful Stays!

    Since it is a spacious property, it couldn't be helped, but the walk from the room to the large public bath was long... I went with determination. The onsen was neither too hot nor too lukewarm, just right. The washbasin in the changing room was like a private room, so I could take care of myself without worrying about others. The amenities are well-stocked, so you can go empty-handed. There is a lounge in front of the large public bath, and from 15:00 to 18:00 in the evening, you can enjoy free alcohol, soft drinks, and Häagen-Dazs ice cream. There were bottled beer, tea, and water in the room's refrigerator, and we were told to feel free to help ourselves. One person in our group had allergies, and since we informed them in advance, they were able to accommodate us. There was a variety of dishes and volume, and we enjoyed delicious meals both in the morning and evening. If I had to say something... there was a humidifier integrated with an air purifier, but since it gets dry with the heating, it would have been nice if they could lend us a type of humidifier that can humidify properly. All the staff were pleasant, and we were able to spend our time comfortably. The price is a bit high, but I would like to use it again for special occasions.
