    It was great again!!

    The time before last, we stayed in a Room with a view of the koi, but last time we were in a Room without one. We couldn’t feed the koi, and my wife seemed a little disappointed. This time, I made sure to make a Reservation for a Room where we could see the koi again. My wife was excited to feed them, which was a relief. As always, Mr. Yamamoto Koji’s meals were delicious, and thank you very much for accommodating my wife’s food preferences as well. If I may mention one thing: it was disappointing that the lounge hours are usually short and that the lounge snacks had been reduced to only dried items. It was also unclear from IKYU’s website that a special lounge would be held. After speaking with your staff, we’re thinking of booking the VIP suite on our next visit. We hope to see positive changes to the lounge in the future.

    Consistently satisfying

    I previously stayed here with my husband and found it very comfortable, so this time I visited with my sister. The warm hospitality and the atmosphere of the building were just as wonderful as before, and we had a very pleasant stay. The meals were thoughtfully prepared down to the smallest details, even in ways you don’t immediately notice, and we left feeling truly refreshed. Thank you!

    A Japanese-style Ryokan in Oku-Yugawara

    I visited for the first time on a friend’s recommendation. It met my expectations, and I was reasonably satisfied. Thank you. I would like to list a few requests. For the dinner, I would prefer fewer dishes with a higher level of quality. (For example, change the steak from sirloin to a higher-quality filet. Also, replace the reusable chopsticks with high-quality disposable ones.) As for the Facility, items such as the TV and toilet are not the latest models (with automatic open/close and washing functions), which may not satisfy guests seeking a high-end experience. Although improvements will require significant investment, I believe the cost-effectiveness will be sufficient. The outdoor bath shower faucet also uses an automatic shut-off system (the water-saving approach feels rather cheap), so I hope it can be changed to manual control. The duvet seems extremely heavy and uncomfortable, perhaps assuming strong air conditioning. I request switching to a lighter down duvet (more suitable for your high-class property). As someone interested in returning, I look forward to your positive response.

    We went away to celebrate a birthday. This was our second stay, and we were upgraded to a wonderful Room. The meals were also very delicious. We would definitely like to stay again.

    This was my first visit. Everyone—the person who welcomed us, the staff who took care of our meals, the person who assisted us at checkout, and the manager—was warm and welcoming, making me want to return. The meals were also a delight to enjoy with the eyes as well as the palate. Thank you for a wonderful, relaxing time.

    I truly experienced how wonderful the Ryokan is during my Multiple Night Stay.

    We decided to make a Reservation at this long-admired Accommodation to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We also booked a Multiple Night Stay because we wanted to relax and take our time. It turned out to be the best stay, and we were able to spend a truly memorable time worthy of our anniversary celebration.

    Ever-evolving Tsubaki!

    I have been visiting for over 20 years now, and the cuisine at Kaiseki Tsubaki continues to evolve with each stay. I am always deeply impressed by the steady dedication behind that refinement. While faithfully preserving the traditions and aesthetics of Kyoto kaiseki, you also embrace new ingredients and ideas with flexibility—an outstanding fusion of classic technique and innovation. Although recent social conditions have clearly affected the environment surrounding ingredient sourcing, your creativity and exceptional culinary skill transform those constraints into new appeal, which is truly remarkable. What left the strongest impression this time was the clear soup with sardine fish balls. Served with burdock root, carrot, mitsuba, and grated ginger, it initially struck me as unexpected—“Sardine fish balls at Kaiseki Tsubaki?”—to be honest. But from the first sip, that impression was completely overturned. The dish drew out the sardine’s distinctive umami to its fullest without losing elegance; its deep richness harmonized beautifully with a crystal-clear dashi. I have had many fish-ball soups across Japan, but this stood out as exceptionally accomplished—an item I felt could only be realized here. I occasionally stay at Accommodations within the Noguchi Kanko Group, but when it comes to cuisine, Kaiseki Tsubaki is in a class of its own. The difference in overall quality is so great that it hardly feels like part of the same group—and it made me reflect on why that is. From how ingredients are handled to dashi preparation, seasonal expression, and even the structure of the entire menu composition, Kaiseki Tsubaki operates on a level one or two steps above. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to our attendant. She wore a cool-toned kimono reminiscent of blue hydrangeas with dignified poise; her movements carried true grace. Her explanations were concise yet precise, allowing us to appreciate each dish more deeply—and her warm hospitality felt soothing enough to melt away everyday fatigue. Through this stay once again, I truly understood why Kaiseki Tsubaki has continued to captivate so many people over so many years. I hold deep respect for both the chefs who protect tradition while never ceasing to challenge themselves and for all staff whose thoughtful care supports them. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time. I look forward to visiting again in another season.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    This was my second stay. Once again, I was able to take it easy and relax. The open-air bath in the Room was at just the right temperature, and I enjoyed it many times. I also really appreciated that drinks in the salon and in the Room were free of charge. I plan to stay again at the end of the year.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    This was my first visit, and it was also my first time in Yugawara, but it was a very calm and wonderful place. I visited with my elderly mother, and thanks to everyone’s thoughtful care, we had an enjoyable stay. The Room was spacious, so we could relax without worrying and spend time at our own pace, and we were able to enjoy a delicious meal slowly in the Room as well. Everyone was very kind, so we had a great time throughout our stay. The view from the Room was wonderful, so I would like to visit again during cherry blossom season.

    I would have liked a...

    I would have liked a power outlet near the bed. The placement of the coffee set felt a bit odd. The river was too close, so it was noisy. The staff worked very hard, and their service was very pleasant.

    There was a large house centipede in the Room, which dampened the mood of our trip.

    When I got up to use the toilet in the middle of the night, there was a large house centipede about 10 cm long stuck to the sliding door. In the morning, there was another house centipede about 5 cm long on the floor. House centipedes look extremely creepy, and I instinctively crushed it with my slippers. The bath, Room, and meals were all excellent, but this completely ruined the mood of my trip. I suspect they entered through an open window during Room cleaning. It’s understandable that insects come to an open-air bath, but I do not want them inside the Room. For future improvement, I suggest: (1) after cleaning, inspect places in the Room where insects may be hiding and spray insecticide if found; (2) if possible, disinfect the entire Room using a fumigation-type insecticide; (3) keep a spray-type insecticide available in each Room.

    It had been a while since my last stay, but...

    The so-called “VIP Room” was difficult to use and simply felt old. The bath water stopped running at times, and the bathtub seemed to have been replaced with an older one. The view from the window was also disappointing.

    Tranquility

    I had a relaxing stay. The large public bath was a bit noisy due to some overseas guests, but although small, the private open-air bath in my room allowed me to enjoy the fresh greenery at a leisurely pace. The meals were excellent and thoughtfully prepared. It was a wonderful time. One more thing: there are steps inside the room, so I think clear markings and handrails may be necessary.

    It was a very peacef...

    It was a very peaceful Accommodation, and the Onsen water was excellent, so I was able to relax and take my time. The food was also very delicious, but I got too full to finish everything, which made me feel sorry. I would appreciate it if the dinner courses could be served a little more quickly. Overall, I am very satisfied! Thank you very much!

    We were extremely satisfied!

    My mother and I stayed here together, and it was a wonderful Ryokan—we were truly satisfied! We stayed in a Room with a private open-air bath, and the Room was spacious, so we were able to relax completely. From the warm welcome at the front desk to the farewell, and everyone who assisted us along the way (including those who guided us to our Room), we felt genuine thoughtfulness throughout, making our stay very pleasant. In particular, Ms. T (initial only for privacy), who took care of our Room, was exceptionally attentive and made our time truly special. Thank you very much. The meals were delicious, beautifully presented with lovely tableware, and we could feel the chef’s care—it was an indulgent experience. Everything was excellent, but especially memorable was the tomato juice served at breakfast; it was sweet and delicious. I usually don’t like tomato juice, but I really enjoyed it here! My mother loved the miso-based hot pot. The seasonings—orange salt and blood orange pepper—were also new to us and incredibly tasty. Even the rice stood out: different varieties were served at dinner and breakfast, both pleasantly sweet and delicious even on their own. We had such a luxurious and happy time—it soothed our everyday fatigue and felt like nourishment for the soul. We would love to visit again!

    Flawless in every aspect—meals, Onsen, Facility, and service.

    We stayed as a couple on a weekday during Golden Week. We had a spacious Room with an open-air bath in the annex (Guest House). Throughout the property, camellia motifs appear here and there, making it enjoyable even when it’s not camellia season. The Onsen in the Room is made of hinoki cypress, and we could soak calmly while looking out at fresh greenery. Our Room also had convenient access to the large public bath, which featured a spacious indoor bath and a large stone-built open-air bath; the water felt wonderful alongside birdsong and the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze. In the lounge, draft beer, various alcoholic drinks, juice, and ice cream were all complimentary—an ideal relaxing space after bathing. The meals truly lived up to its reputation as “a ryotei you can stay at,” with superb craftsmanship throughout: a wide variety of appetizers, fresh sashimi, simmered dishes, and their signature white miso hot pot. We also added grilled spiny lobster and takikomi rice with sakura shrimp and bamboo shoots, enjoying everything to the fullest. Breakfast was equally thorough—from numerous side dishes to rice and miso soup—and went down easily despite how much we had eaten the day before. While there are touches that convey its history, everything from cleaning to subtle fragrance was meticulously cared for, and all staff were friendly with tasteful professionalism. It felt like an experience that represents one facet of Japanese culture at its finest—something I hope will be preserved for generations to come. Highly recommended for younger travelers as well.

    We had a wonderful holiday.

    My spouse and I stayed for one night in the Room “Utsusemi (326).” Unfortunately, it rained that day, so we cut our sightseeing short and arrived quite early, but the staff handled everything with great care. We were able to relax comfortably while waiting until the Room was ready. Everyone—from the front desk staff to those who guided us and the staff in charge of our Room—was welcoming and pleasant, and we truly appreciate it. The Room was more than spacious enough, and the open-air bath was easy to use, allowing us to unwind throughout our stay. We also used the lounge, which felt perfect for enjoying ourselves before dinner. The meal exceeded even our high expectations, with one delicious dish after another—it was outstanding. The tableware, presentation, and colors were wonderful as well, and several dishes in particular left a strong impression on us. It was our first time visiting Oku-Yugawara, but it’s only about an hour and a half by car from Yokohama—much closer than we expected. We would love to come again, and we hope to visit this property in another season as well to enjoy different scenery and cuisine.

    We stayed here for h...

    We stayed here for his birthday trip. Because we’re both usually very busy with work, we were looking for a place away from the crowds where we could enjoy nature and lush greenery, with an in-Room open-air bath, in-Room dining, and a location not too far from central Tokyo. After considering many options, we chose Kaiseikiro—and it exceeded our expectations. We’re in our 30s and were a little nervous that it might feel too formal for us, but by the end we were so relaxed that we both said, “We don’t want to go home.” We truly enjoyed everything—from the meals to the baths. The Room was clean and spacious, and the fresh green view from the private open-air bath was even more beautiful than we imagined. The meals were delicately seasoned yet full of flavor, letting us appreciate the ingredients and dashi; we were completely satisfied. Thanks to you, my boyfriend was absolutely delighted as well. From the person who guided us on arrival to our attendant, housekeeping staff, and every team member we passed in the property—everyone greeted us warmly and politely. We were genuinely moved by your hospitality. This time we stayed in the Annex (Geihinkan), but we’re also curious about the Main Building. We’d love to return in another season to enjoy kaiseki again—please let us visit together again! Thank you very much for providing such a wonderful stay.

    I don’t usually stay at a Ryokan, but…

    This time, we chose this place because my elderly mother-in-law was traveling with us. The building is set on a mountainside, so the interior layout is quite complex. However, there is an elevator, so I think even older guests can get around without any issues. The Room was very clean, and the open-air bath facing the pond was especially relaxing. Meals were served in the Room for both breakfast and dinner, and we asked for a table-and-chair setup, which made it very comfortable. The food was delicious, though as you’d expect at a Ryokan, the portions were quite generous. Personally, I felt it would still be great with slightly smaller portions. We also used the large public bath and the lounge several times and never found them crowded. Reading in the lounge with a beer after bathing was wonderful. The view from the windows was stunning, and the mountain cherry blossoms were beautiful. Overall it was a very comfortable stay, but it felt like staffing levels were just barely enough to maintain service quality; for someone used to staying at a Hotel, it seemed a little precarious at times. That said, everyone worked politely and diligently, so we didn’t have any negative experiences. For reference, we arrived by train and bus; the bus stop is very close to the Ryokan, so you can manage fine without a car. Bus services are also relatively frequent.

    The Perfect Getaway

    A friend recommended this Accommodation to me three years ago, and we finally stayed here for the first time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Both breakfast and dinner served in our Room were delicious. We were very satisfied with everything—the attentive service from the staff, the open-air bath at the large public bath, drinks in the service lounge, and the open-air bath in our Room. We also heard that the menu changes with each season, so we would love to return after June.

    I visited three times, roughly once every three months.

    There were a few moments that made me think, “Really?” for a Ryokan that claims to be a luxury brand. One example is the complimentary drinks in the fridge: only four standard bottles, and just one 500 ml bottle of mineral water. It’s no joke if an elderly guest gets dehydrated after using the Onsen and ends up needing emergency transport. With that amount, you’re expected to boil water with an electric kettle for coffee (beans), Japanese tea, black tea… it’s not realistic. Thoughtful Accommodations often stock piles of ice-chilled mineral water in the bath area. I stayed across all three Room tiers—from standard Rooms to the VIP wing—covering every level. Each has its own rich character. If there isn’t much difference in the food, I personally recommend the standard Room with its outstanding garden view. The appeal of an Onsen Ryokan is the baths and the cuisine. The average score over three visits for Kaiseiki cuisine—one of this property’s highlights—was not something I would nitpick. However, for some reason it improved dramatically from my first visit to my third. The gap between visit #1 and visit #3 was huge; if we use a three-tier scale, visit #1 was “lowest,” while visit #3 was above “highest.” I can imagine how hard it is for the head chef to compete within limited costs (just my assumption) as part of a group company. Was this difference proportional to Room grade, or simply due to seasonal menu changes? Also, according to what people say online, when writing a Review on IKYU.com for high-end Ryokan, it’s customary to show respect and start from three stars as a baseline. Sorry for ignoring that convention. With full awareness that this may be rude, this is a tough review meant as encouragement—and please forgive me since I tried three times.

    A Wonderful Accommodation to Remember

    We visited to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday, and it became a truly memorable stay. As she has gotten older, even walking distances, small steps, and slopes have become difficult for her, so we planned this trip rather cautiously. When we realized that the in-room bath was a sunken style that she physically couldn’t get into due to her bad legs, and that the large public bath was a bit of a walk away, we were disappointed—but they immediately prepared a wheelchair for us and solved the problem! Thanks to that, we were able to relax together and enjoy the Onsen in the large public bath. We were also pleasantly surprised when they promptly provided caregiving slippers inside the Accommodation; it’s rare to encounter such quiet yet thorough consideration. The meals were not only delicious but also beautifully presented, and we were completely satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. Above all, we are deeply grateful for the wonderful attentiveness of our attendant. This is an Accommodation that will stay in our hearts—we would love to visit again.

    The property was kept very clean, and it was quiet, so we were able to relax comfortably. The manager and all staff were wonderfully attentive, and we had a very comfortable stay with no inconvenience. Our Room was far from the large public bath and the lounge, so next time we would like to take that into consideration.

    I have been visiting every year for about the past 10 years. I have stayed in various Rooms, and no matter which Room I stay in, the staff are cheerful and kind, making my stay very comfortable. The management changed a few years ago, and at first it felt a bit different from before, but now it is just as it used to be—the food is delicious, and I can relax comfortably. It is very calming, so I would like to visit again.

    Enjoy a Quiet, Long-Established Accommodation

    From the moment we passed through the gate of the Accommodation, we felt the atmosphere of a long-established inn, and that feeling stayed with us until we left. The Room was bright, spacious, quiet, and very relaxing. The meals were especially delicious both at breakfast and dinner—we even finished all of the rice cooked in a traditional pot. Everyone on staff, including our room attendant, was warm and pleasant. What left a strong impression was how they took many photos for us at departure and kindly assisted us while sharing enjoyable conversation. We also appreciated being able to order Koumedo’s kibi mochi and karukan manju through the Accommodation. It was a wonderful trip to Oku-Yugawara.

    Always satisfying every time—it makes me want to come back again.

    It has been about 20 years since I first stayed at Kaiseikiro. It’s difficult to visit every year, but even so, this is always a place that makes me feel glad I came. As others have said, everything is perfect—from the outstanding cuisine to the lounge service, including drinks such as sake and ice cream. Given its long history, some age in the Rooms and Facilities is unavoidable, but there were no issues at all and the cleaning was impeccable. I have no complaints. The only slight negatives were that the tiled corridors can make a bit of noise when rolling a suitcase (of course, staff will carry it for you, but some people may hesitate if it’s heavy), and that depending on the Room, it can be quite far to the Onsen. I hope to return again as soon as possible.

    A Peaceful and Tranquil Accommodation

    We stayed at the guest wing “Kokonran.” As soon as we pulled up to the entrance, a staff member came to greet us, and in the lobby we were first served traditional dry sweets and matcha. Along the covered corridor leading to our Room, there were framed calligraphy works for each Room with readings and brief explanations written on tanzaku strips, which was fascinating to see. In the lounge, complimentary drinks are available, including coffee and alcoholic beverages. The coffee selection includes not only regular coffee but also espresso, and we enjoyed it along with juices and alcohol. The Room is a spacious, authentically Japanese design featuring plenty of solid wood; the main room, an additional room, bathroom area, and bedroom are all separate. Each space is entered by stepping across a small earthen-floored threshold (doma), and it was fun that each one had a different character. The restroom has three options—Western-style toilet, Japanese-style toilet, and urinal—and the hand-washing basin set in a crouching style has a wonderful sense of tradition. Above all, it felt very relaxing that there were no clocks anywhere. The meals were all carefully prepared. There were many dishes and everything was delicious; however, it was quite filling overall, so I felt each portion could be slightly smaller. Personally, I especially enjoyed the steamed cherry salmon with domyoji rice flour dumpling and the small hot pot of vegetables in Saikyo miso broth—both paired very well with the roast beef. The baths were well maintained with plenty of linens provided. Compared with the in-Room bath(s), I noticed more of a sulfur scent in the large public bath (onsen), but both had excellent water that warmed me through to my core. From the entrance there is a walking path to the left; it is somewhat steep but reserved for guests only, so you can enjoy a quiet stroll. Along this rustic trail are stone statues of the Seven Lucky Gods; I imagine it must be especially beautiful during flower season. Oku-Yugawara may be quieter than Hakone with fewer tourist attractions nearby—but precisely for that reason this is an Accommodation worth visiting for its stay itself. It more than lives up to those expectations. There are not many places I truly plan to return to again—but Kaiseikiro is an unforgettable Accommodation that I would like to visit again when I have another chance.

    An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return To

    Even though this was only my second stay, I received such a warm welcome, and the hospitality is truly wonderful. In Japan, many Accommodations won’t let you in until check-in time, but I arrived a little early and you let me in right away—thank you so much. The open-air cypress bath is absolutely amazing. This time I chose a smaller Room than last time because I wanted to lie down and watch TV, but it was just as comfortable. The family next door was quite noisy with their children running around, but when I first heard it I wondered if they were just laying out their futons. A staff member noticed and spoke to them, and after that it became very quiet. Thank you very much. Since I’m the kind of picky guest who always asks to change Rooms if it’s too noisy at other Accommodations, I really appreciate your help! The food was outstanding both in presentation and taste; the rice cooked in an iron pot was truly delicious; and above all, the soup was exceptionally good. If I had to say one thing, personally I prefer shabu-shabu or steak over tataki for meat, but my companion happily enjoyed the Yonezawa beef tataki. It’s not an Accommodation we can visit year-round, but we will definitely come again.

    A Panasonic Real Pro...

    A Panasonic Real Pro massage chair was provided. While I’ve occasionally seen massage chairs at other Ryokan and Hotels, most were outdated models from decades ago, so this was likely a latest model—and the biggest surprise. The Room size, garden (it was a bit early for camellias, so not many were in bloom), meals, loungewear, and overall comfort were excellent. The king-size bed was also high quality. The staff’s service and demeanor were fitting for a luxury Ryokan. If I had to mention a few minor inconveniences: I couldn’t adjust the Onsen temperature myself (though I was told it can be adjusted upon request), the water level in the indoor bath dropped fairly quickly, changing into slippers was necessary when moving between the Room and the indoor bath/wash area (since you have to go via the entrance), and managing humidity was difficult. Also, at the lounge, only vanilla Häagen-Dazs remained by the end. Overall, I had a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much for your hospitality.
