    Traditional Ryokan

    It was a wonderful Ryokan in Oku-Yugawara. The staff, including the Nakai-san, were all attentive and courteous. As expected, traditional Ryokans are truly exceptional! I would love to visit again.

    I visited again this...

    I visited again this year because I had a great experience last year. This time, I stayed in a slightly larger Room, which made my stay even more comfortable. Despite being an older building surrounded by greenery and a pond, it is well-maintained and clean. Since it was a quiet weekday, I was able to enjoy the large public bath and lounge almost privately at my leisure. The meals I had been looking forward to were also excellent for both dinner and breakfast. As someone with a small appetite, I often feel sad when unable to finish meals elsewhere, but here they kindly adjusted the portions so that I could enjoy every dish completely—and even had seconds of rice! The beautifully presented dishes were carefully prepared to highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients in small portions, which made me very happy. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration regarding ingredients I'm not fond of and alcohol throughout my stay. I look forward to visiting again next year!

    It was another elegant and delightful experience.

    The review is quite delayed. (I visited in September...) Once again, it was a stable and elegant time. The food was as delicious as always and visually delightful. For the first time, I had chestnut rice, which made me very happy. Also, though a side dish, the pear sorbet was incredibly tasty. If I may be critical, there seemed to be slight discoloration on some of the sashimi... (Still, I rated the meal 5.) I always look forward to enjoying the lounge! This time, a beer server made its debut and my friend was delighted! As for service: I rated it 3 because on the second day, one of the staff members seemed very rushed throughout our interaction—it was slightly disappointing. However, on the first day, another staff member provided thoughtful attention that we greatly appreciated. One thing that bothered me: if you are a repeat guest with different companions than before, please avoid mentioning previous companions... (Of course, if it's with the same companion as before then it's not an issue; in fact bringing it up would be nice.) I debated between rating this aspect 4 or 3 but decided on a stricter score of 3. Not just this visit but overall... While not new buildings by any means they are well-maintained allowing for comfortable stays! The changing room facilities were excellent—high-quality towels & amenities scored high points from me as a woman! Additionally both Japanese & international staff created such welcoming atmospheres once again leaving positive impressions. One disappointment during this trip involved using Japan’s hometown tax donation system which ended up increasing total costs unexpectedly causing inconvenience toward my friend too unfortunately… While unrelated directly towards your accommodation itself rather due unclear announcements via IKYU.com platform likely leading confusion initially requiring extra effort resolving matters later down line ultimately detracting experience somewhat despite no fault lying upon yourselves whatsoever here instead stemming externally elsewhere entirely beyond control yet still worth noting cautionary advice others considering similar routes ahead next times around perhaps avoiding pitfalls better prepared beforehand ideally speaking hopefully improving clarity communication future updates moving     Although it is a famous Ryokan,

    This is a very famous Ryokan, and I had read various reviews before deciding to visit as I wanted to experience it at least once. Since it was a weekday and a last-minute reservation, the price was quite reasonable. The building is quite large, and while it seems well-maintained considering its age, the rooms might feel less impressive compared to other Ryokans in the same price range. As for the food, having meals served in-room with such a number of rooms in the Ryokan was delightful and very delicious. However, I found the selection of alcoholic beverages disappointing. While I love both sake and wine, there were few options that appealed to me, so I ended up not drinking at all. Regarding customer service, from the moment we arrived, we were greeted by staff who did not understand Japanese (which is not inherently an issue), but it seemed like they were unprepared to welcome guests properly. It took some time for us to be guided to our room; if this happens on weekdays when it's less busy, weekends might involve even longer waits. If this were an inexpensive Ryokan, my expectations would be lower; however, given that this accommodation charges a considerable amount of money, better hospitality upon arrival would have significantly improved my impression. While ownership may have changed over time and things may no longer be as they once were in certain aspects due to circumstances beyond control, I sincerely hope this historic accommodation continues positively into the future. Hence my critical review here today.

    The Room staff was excellent.

    We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. Since it fell on the first day of a long weekend this year, I was hesitant due to the crowds and higher prices, but decided to go with a slightly more expensive accommodation as it was a special occasion. In the end, we were very satisfied. The room was comfortable, and above all, the food was absolutely delicious. The chef's signature broth was exceptional and truly enjoyable. Both dinner and breakfast exceeded our expectations and were delightful experiences. The seasonal dishes made us want to visit again during another time of year. Additionally, the staff member who served our meals in the room provided not only pleasant but also professional service that made our stay incredibly comfortable. We are deeply grateful for her hospitality—so much so that we hope to be served by her again if we return (though I'm sure all staff members are equally wonderful). One small point: it was a bit disappointing that complimentary shuttle service is only available for reservations made through the official website. However, this might just be a minor luxury concern on my part. Also, while having meals in-room felt luxurious, I noticed that food smells lingered in the room afterward. If there’s an option for dining at a designated meal area next time, I might consider choosing that plan instead—though this is perhaps just wishful thinking. Overall, we had an excellent experience and enjoyed a wonderful wedding anniversary celebration here. Thank you very much!

    In the tranquility, time flowed gently.

    The accommodation caters to an older age group, and with meals served in the room, there was little interaction with other guests. From the private open-air onsen in the room, you can hear the soothing sound of Fujikigawa River and fully enjoy the serene autumn of Oku-Yugawara. It is a wonderful accommodation. I look forward to staying here again in the near future.

    A traditional ryokan with a long history, offering excellent value for money typical of Noguchi Kanko.

    Having stayed in thousands of accommodations, both hotels and ryokans, throughout the year domestically and internationally, Tsubaki earns a passing grade. Despite being just 90 minutes from Tokyo Station by train and bus, the sukiya-style architecture nestled in serene mountain valleys offers tranquility. Opened in 1978, it was once considered exclusive but has become high-value since being taken over by Noguchi Kanko, similar to their "Bourou" series in Hokkaido or "Kitanokaze Saryou" in Hakone. All 29 rooms are named after camellias within the garden and include options with onsen open-air baths. While not equipped with the latest facilities due to its long-standing history, this adds to its charm. Guests can choose between table-and-chair or low-table-and-floor-chair setups for all rooms—a groundbreaking feature. The onsen public bath is also comfortable. Both breakfast and dinner are served as room meals for all guests—an excellent touch. Dinner features a wide variety of dishes showcasing Noguchi Kanko's specialty culinary skills; there’s even a complimentary mini-bar paired well with four types of pairings starting at ¥5,500~. Breakfast is equally diverse with attention to temperature control; Hokkaido rice is served hot from earthenware pots at every meal. A lounge offering local sake is also included. While some staff were inexperienced due to recent labor shortages affecting even accommodations exceeding ¥500,000 per night elsewhere, Tsubaki's team was positive and cheerful—leaving much promise for the future ahead!

    Used for his birthday trip.

    We chose to stay at Tsubaki to enjoy dinner leisurely in our room. Both my partner and I have big appetites, but the delicious dishes prepared for us were more than enough, making our stay truly enjoyable. My partner has allergies, but the staff handled it smoothly—thank you for that. Additionally, we happened to have the Onsen all to ourselves due to timing and could relax as much as we wanted. Conversations with the staff in the lounge were also delightful. It was clear that every staff member who assisted us was very polite and dedicated in their service. We will definitely visit again as a couple!

    Perfect accommodation for special occasions.

    From arrival to check-out, the accommodation provided a comfortable and peaceful stay throughout. Thank you to the room attendant and all the staff for making it a memorable anniversary. Despite being a luxurious ryokan, the friendly smiles and approachable service of the staff allowed us to feel at ease without any formality. While there are slight signs of aging in areas like plumbing compared to newer hotels, the building exudes an impressive dignity and history that can be felt throughout its premises, turning its age into charm rather than inconvenience. It was truly relaxing. The cuisine was exceptional; each dish reflected the chef's dedication, offering not just satisfaction for hunger but also visual delight through an artful course menu that left a lasting impression. We deeply appreciate all your thoughtful considerations. If I must mention one downside, it would be gaining weight from eating too much! We hope to visit again if we have another opportunity.     This is my second stay.

    I recently stayed for the second time this year at "Tsuruya" in Yugawara Onsen, a long-admired accommodation. Both stays were absolutely satisfying. Having experienced various high-end ryokans before, I can confidently recommend "Tsuruya" to many people. Here are three specific reasons: 1. The exceptional service provided by the staff. They were attentive to every detail, always considering the well-being of guests, which allowed me to enjoy my stay with peace of mind. 2. The dinner and breakfast were exceptionally delicious. The way they prepared the kombu dashi was perfect, making every dish delightful to savor. I am already looking forward to my next stay. 3. There is a lounge near the large public bath where you can enjoy draft beer, sake (junmai ginjo), and appetizers—all complimentary! Relaxing in this lounge with newspapers or magazines while enjoying fine drinks made for an elegant experience. Lastly, though I've only stayed twice so far, I look forward to experiencing other rooms in future visits!

    The room was not user-friendly.

    The Room was spacious and comfortable, but it was inconvenient to have to wear slippers for everything—going to the toilet, getting something from the refrigerator, or using the attached bathroom. Especially at night, going from the bedroom to the toilet required descending three steps and putting on slippers again, which was quite challenging for seniors with mobility issues. Additionally, during dinner service, it seemed that the staff member serving us was inexperienced. The timing between dishes was poorly managed; there were moments when we had no snacks while drinking beer and times when rice was served before finishing our hot pot dish. This aspect of the experience was disappointing.

    The meals are absolu...

    The meals are absolutely delicious. Both breakfast and dinner were exceptional in terms of flavor, portion size, presentation, menu balance, and the choice of tableware—among the best accommodations we have stayed at. For us, as we eat smaller portions with age, it was very much appreciated. The idea of freely feeding the koi fish in the pond in front of the room was unique. The open-air bath attached to the room could be slightly larger to better match the size of the room and garden for a more relaxing experience. As mentioned in our feedback form to the accommodation, one disappointment was that cups and glasses provided for coffee or alcoholic beverages in the lounge had an unpleasant smell. This may have been due to insufficiently cleaned cloths used for wiping them. Such issues with utensils meant for consumption should not occur and momentarily made us question the accommodation's standards.

    The service and meals were excellent.

    I booked a stay at a traditional accommodation with an open-air bath. While the building's age added charm, the room had a distinct old-house smell that I noticed. The public bath and lounge were disappointing, but the staff assigned to our room provided excellent service, adjusting to our pace and serving meals promptly. When I casually mentioned to another staff member (not assigned to our room) that there was no TV in the bedroom but I wished to watch TV while lying down, they kindly set up futons in the dining area without hesitation. Their professionalism was impressive despite their young age. Feeding the koi fish in the garden from our room was also enjoyable. Since I wasn't fond of the public bath, I made full use of the private open-air bath in my room. The hinoki wood bathtub overlooking the garden was absolutely perfect for relaxing anytime I wanted. The meals were beautifully presented and delicious without any complaints! I will definitely come back again!

    Exciting Onsen

    I stayed in a Japanese-style room. Both dinner and breakfast were served in the room, and I enjoyed the meals comfortably at a slightly lower table with chairs without any discomfort. The semi-open-air bath had excellent water quality, and everything from the wonderful cuisine to the staff's hospitality was satisfying. Thank you to all the staff for taking care of us.

    Perfect flavor

    The building is solid and stable, featuring a pond that utilizes the height difference between the first and second floors. The view from the room is charming, accompanied by the soothing sound of a flowing river. The koi fish in the pond are large and well-grown, offering a closer look than many temple ponds. In an Onsen villa area designed to enjoy nourishment and nature, encountering insects is natural. Even releasing insects that may enter the bath can be done with kind words. The decor, including small study rooms and exquisite hanging scrolls, is exceptional. While amenities are simple without extravagance, they are perfectly sufficient. Above all else, the cuisine is outstanding—worth visiting just for this taste! This Ryokan embodies true hospitality; nothing compares to its charm!

    I had always wanted ...

    I had always wanted to stay at Tsubaki since I was young. When I learned about the "Moon Viewing Gathering" event, I finally had the chance to visit Tsubaki. The Room, bath, and meals were wonderful, but the "Moon Viewing Gathering" was truly exceptional. I was thrilled to experience songs, dances, and traditional games by geishas, something I had only seen on TV before. The graceful and elegant dances of the geishas were mesmerizing, and I had so much fun learning "Konpira Fune Fune" and "Tosenkyo" during the traditional games. I sincerely hope the "Moon Viewing Gathering" continues in the future. The staff were all warm and welcoming, making my stay very pleasant. Thank you for a wonderful time!

    A historic and solemn Ryokan.

    The staff shared the history of the Ryokan, which was very fascinating. About 25 years ago, I heard from a senior colleague at work who stayed here, and I had always wanted to visit, though it felt out of reach. Finally, I had the chance to stay here, and both the meals and the service from the staff were exceptional. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again. Please note that some rooms are not barrier-free, so it is recommended for elderly guests to consult before booking.

    Koi in the Garden

    I was soothed by the tranquil Onsen in Yugawara. The Room had a wonderful view of many koi fish right in front, and feeding them was an enjoyable experience as they gathered energetically. Cold draft beer and ice cream after the bath added to the relaxation. The towels with camellia embroidery were also beautiful. The matsutake mushroom dobin-mushi and paired sea bream sashimi were delicious, though a bit more detailed explanation of the dishes would have been appreciated.

    Tsubaki: Returning After 30 Years

    In early October, my spouse and I stayed for two nights. For the second night, we chose the "Moon Viewing & Art Appreciation Plan," which we were very excited about. It had been 30 years since our last visit, so my memories were not very clear, but I had heard that the management of "Tsubaki" had changed since then, which piqued my interest in seeing how it might have evolved. Personally, I felt there were changes. Previously, it seemed to emphasize formality and precision. This time, however, I felt warmth, friendliness, enjoyment, and a sense of relaxation—like hospitality was added to the traditional Ryokan experience. We found this style of service even more appealing than before. The "Moon Viewing Event" included not only art appreciation but also traditional entertainment with geisha performances in a tatami room setting; it was an incredibly enjoyable evening banquet. The cuisine and the private open-air bath in our Room exceeded expectations as well. The soothing sound of Fujikigawa River flowing near our Room provided us with ultimate relaxation. If there are more exciting events planned in the future, we would love to visit again! Thank you to everyone at Tsubaki for such a wonderful stay!

    A Relaxing Journey

    This was my first visit. I chose a Room with in-room dining and a private open-air bath, hoping to relax in a lush, green setting. The Room was exceptional. A few beautiful koi fish swam gracefully on the terrace. While soaking in the open-air bath, I listened to the gentle sound of the river and admired the koi, which was incredibly soothing. The meals were beautifully presented with intricate decorations and tableware, and they were absolutely delicious. The staff attending to the Room was very polite, making the dining experience enjoyable. The Hotel also had a lounge where I enjoyed drinks, snacks, and ice cream. It wasn’t crowded, and I could relax on the sofa at my own pace. It was a wonderful trip. I hope to visit again next year. Thank you very much.

    Geisha Performers

    In the evening, instead of dining in the Room, seating was arranged in a large hall where we enjoyed performances by geisha, including dances and traditional games like Konpira Fune Fune. It was an incredibly enjoyable and rare experience, offered for a limited time.

    An Accommodation You'll Want to Return To

    There is a step in the room that requires attention until you get used to it. The accommodation and room allowed us to enjoy the seasonal atmosphere and have a pleasant stay. The meals were visually delightful, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The baths, including the private room bath and public bath, always had perfect water temperature, which we enjoyed multiple times. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again.

    A trip with my mother. We chose a room in the guesthouse, offering an incredible sense of openness! Upon entering the Room, the view of endless greenery beyond the tatami was as beautiful as a painting. As soon as we arrived, we headed to the large public bath. Both the slightly hot indoor bath and the gently warm open-air bath were so comfortable and incredibly relaxing. The thoughtful selections like Mikimoto Cosmetics series for shampoo and such, and a 3Dplus hairdryer recommended by salons, made me very happy. The meals were all delicious, especially the Yonezawa beef steak from our special Plan—it was heavenly with its melting fat! I finished everything but might have eaten too much. When the maple trees outside turn red in autumn, it must be even more stunning. I would love to visit again someday. It was such an enjoyable experience. Thank you to all of your staff!

    Arriving in the heav...

    Arriving in the heavy rain was a bit frightening, and with seemingly few staff available, we did not receive a warm welcome. However, thanks to the incredibly kind and attentive service of the staff member assigned to us, all our initial disappointment disappeared. By evening, I found myself thinking, "I'm so glad we decided to stay here." Despite being young, their thoughtful and excellent hospitality was truly impressive—thank you very much. The Room overlooking the koi pond was comfortable as I also have a pond at home. However, some stains on the walls were left unattended; with a bit more maintenance, it could have been even more pleasant. As for meals, although initially declined for matsutake mushroom rice, we were eventually able to enjoy it and savor the flavors of autumn—it was delicious! Thank you for your consideration.

    It was an accommodation that met our expectations.

    Over a decade ago, when my children were small, I received a flyer mentioning that we could play in the stream on the property. Although I wanted to visit back then, I couldn't make it until now. Finally, my wish has come true. The Facility, food, and service all met my expectations, and I had a very comfortable stay. If I have another opportunity to visit, I'd love to try staying in a different room. Thank you very much!

    We stayed at the accommodation as a family on a weekday after the Obon holiday. It was an extremely hot day, and although we had planned to explore the Odawara area before heading to the ryokan, we arrived about an hour earlier than the check-in time. Despite this, we were kindly allowed into our room early, which was greatly appreciated. The staff who greeted us at the entrance and our assigned attendant were very polite and attentive, making us feel comfortable even though it was our first time staying at this accommodation. After checking in, we relaxed in the lounge. Perhaps because it was a weekday, there were few other guests around, allowing us to enjoy complimentary draft beer and sake in a calm atmosphere. Our son happily enjoyed Häagen-Dazs ice cream as well. The room we stayed in was called "Geihinkan" (Guest Pavilion), which was incredibly spacious with its own private open-air bath. Surrounded by mountains and lush greenery with sunlight filtering through the trees, we soaked in the bath multiple times and truly experienced luxurious moments of relaxation. Dinner consisted of meticulously prepared dishes that were both visually stunning and delicious. My wife and son were very satisfied with every course. The dessert—a cheesecake infused with peach aroma—was particularly memorable for its exceptional taste unlike anything we've had before. We are also grateful for our attendant's thoughtful service during dinner. Although we don't often stay at traditional Japanese ryokans, this visit reminded us of how wonderful "Wa" (Japanese style) can be. We would love to return again during another season to experience it anew. Thank you for providing such an amazing stay!

    The best accommodation.

    Thank you for your hospitality during our recent stay. As always, we were thoroughly satisfied with the bath and meals. In the lounge, guests can enjoy sake, shochu, soft drinks, and Häagen-Dazs ice cream. A few years ago, draft beer was served in glasses upon order; however, in recent years it had been replaced with small canned beers. This time though, a beer server was available for self-service and unlimited refills! My husband, a draft beer enthusiast, was thrilled and kept visiting the lounge every time he went to the bath—it almost seemed like he was taking baths just to drink more beer (laughs). As for me, I’m a sparkling wine fan and have been secretly hoping that sparkling wine will be added to the lounge offerings someday. Every visit is filled with exceptional cuisine and service; however, this time there was something that moved us even more than usual. The attentiveness of the staff assigned to our room was truly remarkable. To give one example: I prefer lukewarm tea over hot tea. During a casual conversation about this preference of mine, they noticed it and prepared two different teas during meals—one at regular temperature for my husband and one at my preferred temperature for me. I hope we’ll meet them again on our next visit! We look forward to enjoying Onsen baths and delicious cuisine once more. Thank you so much for your outstanding hospitality!
