    Satisfied as always.

    I have been visiting every year for about the past 10 years. I have stayed in various Rooms, and no matter which Room I stay in, the staff are cheerful and kind, making my stay very comfortable. The management changed a few years ago, and at first it felt a bit different from before, but now it is just as it used to be—the food is delicious, and I can relax comfortably. It is very calming, so I would like to visit again.

    Enjoy a Quiet, Long-Established Accommodation

    From the moment we passed through the gate of the Accommodation, we felt the atmosphere of a long-established inn, and that feeling stayed with us until we left. The Room was bright, spacious, quiet, and very relaxing. The meals were especially delicious both at breakfast and dinner—we even finished all of the rice cooked in a traditional pot. Everyone on staff, including our room attendant, was warm and pleasant. What left a strong impression was how they took many photos for us at departure and kindly assisted us while sharing enjoyable conversation. We also appreciated being able to order Koumedo’s kibi mochi and karukan manju through the Accommodation. It was a wonderful trip to Oku-Yugawara.

    Always satisfying every time—it makes me want to come back again.

    It has been about 20 years since I first stayed at Kaiseikiro. It’s difficult to visit every year, but even so, this is always a place that makes me feel glad I came. As others have said, everything is perfect—from the outstanding cuisine to the lounge service, including drinks such as sake and ice cream. Given its long history, some age in the Rooms and Facilities is unavoidable, but there were no issues at all and the cleaning was impeccable. I have no complaints. The only slight negatives were that the tiled corridors can make a bit of noise when rolling a suitcase (of course, staff will carry it for you, but some people may hesitate if it’s heavy), and that depending on the Room, it can be quite far to the Onsen. I hope to return again as soon as possible.

    A Peaceful and Tranquil Accommodation

    We stayed at the guest wing “Kokonran.” As soon as we pulled up to the entrance, a staff member came to greet us, and in the lobby we were first served traditional dry sweets and matcha. Along the covered corridor leading to our Room, there were framed calligraphy works for each Room with readings and brief explanations written on tanzaku strips, which was fascinating to see. In the lounge, complimentary drinks are available, including coffee and alcoholic beverages. The coffee selection includes not only regular coffee but also espresso, and we enjoyed it along with juices and alcohol. The Room is a spacious, authentically Japanese design featuring plenty of solid wood; the main room, an additional room, bathroom area, and bedroom are all separate. Each space is entered by stepping across a small earthen-floored threshold (doma), and it was fun that each one had a different character. The restroom has three options—Western-style toilet, Japanese-style toilet, and urinal—and the hand-washing basin set in a crouching style has a wonderful sense of tradition. Above all, it felt very relaxing that there were no clocks anywhere. The meals were all carefully prepared. There were many dishes and everything was delicious; however, it was quite filling overall, so I felt each portion could be slightly smaller. Personally, I especially enjoyed the steamed cherry salmon with domyoji rice flour dumpling and the small hot pot of vegetables in Saikyo miso broth—both paired very well with the roast beef. The baths were well maintained with plenty of linens provided. Compared with the in-Room bath(s), I noticed more of a sulfur scent in the large public bath (onsen), but both had excellent water that warmed me through to my core. From the entrance there is a walking path to the left; it is somewhat steep but reserved for guests only, so you can enjoy a quiet stroll. Along this rustic trail are stone statues of the Seven Lucky Gods; I imagine it must be especially beautiful during flower season. Oku-Yugawara may be quieter than Hakone with fewer tourist attractions nearby—but precisely for that reason this is an Accommodation worth visiting for its stay itself. It more than lives up to those expectations. There are not many places I truly plan to return to again—but Kaiseikiro is an unforgettable Accommodation that I would like to visit again when I have another chance.

    An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return To

    Even though this was only my second stay, I received such a warm welcome, and the hospitality is truly wonderful. In Japan, many Accommodations won’t let you in until check-in time, but I arrived a little early and you let me in right away—thank you so much. The open-air cypress bath is absolutely amazing. This time I chose a smaller Room than last time because I wanted to lie down and watch TV, but it was just as comfortable. The family next door was quite noisy with their children running around, but when I first heard it I wondered if they were just laying out their futons. A staff member noticed and spoke to them, and after that it became very quiet. Thank you very much. Since I’m the kind of picky guest who always asks to change Rooms if it’s too noisy at other Accommodations, I really appreciate your help! The food was outstanding both in presentation and taste; the rice cooked in an iron pot was truly delicious; and above all, the soup was exceptionally good. If I had to say one thing, personally I prefer shabu-shabu or steak over tataki for meat, but my companion happily enjoyed the Yonezawa beef tataki. It’s not an Accommodation we can visit year-round, but we will definitely come again.

    A Panasonic Real Pro...

    A Panasonic Real Pro massage chair was provided. While I’ve occasionally seen massage chairs at other Ryokan and Hotels, most were outdated models from decades ago, so this was likely a latest model—and the biggest surprise. The Room size, garden (it was a bit early for camellias, so not many were in bloom), meals, loungewear, and overall comfort were excellent. The king-size bed was also high quality. The staff’s service and demeanor were fitting for a luxury Ryokan. If I had to mention a few minor inconveniences: I couldn’t adjust the Onsen temperature myself (though I was told it can be adjusted upon request), the water level in the indoor bath dropped fairly quickly, changing into slippers was necessary when moving between the Room and the indoor bath/wash area (since you have to go via the entrance), and managing humidity was difficult. Also, at the lounge, only vanilla Häagen-Dazs remained by the end. Overall, I had a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    The Best Ryokan

    The service is among the best in Yugawara. Their welcoming spirit and hospitality truly came through. Our whole family was delighted. As for the meals, it’s no exaggeration to say they were the best of any Accommodation we’ve stayed at so far. Everything tasted wonderful. All the staff were friendly, and their service was truly professional. We would love to stay again.

    This stay was excellent.

    Every dish on the spring dinner menu was wonderful, and it really reminded me of the high quality. This time I chose a Room with an open-air bath, and I was able to fully enjoy both the large public bath and the bath in my Room. The lounge also had a draft beer server, which I enjoyed as well. All of the staff were very pleasant—thank you very much. Just one thing: the L’OCCITANE conditioner in the large public bath seemed to have been repeatedly topped up, and it had slightly deteriorated and developed an unusual smell.

    This was my fifth stay, and the service is always excellent and attentive.

    From the warm welcome at the entrance to the attentive service in the guest room, your hospitality stands out far above other properties. It truly shows how thoroughly your staff are trained—I was deeply impressed. This was my fifth stay, and even with different attendants, the same high level of service remained; it was outstanding. The meals showcasing the head chef’s creativity were, as always, exceptional. With a wonderful sense of seasonality that delights both the eyes and the palate, everything was flawless. Thank you again to the chef for consistently making our stay so enjoyable. We would love to return again soon. Kaiseikiro is a place that truly soothes the heart—thank you for your continued care.

    This was my first stay in 18 years. Because of my previous experience, I was disappointed with some aspects of the service. Hiring foreign staff is understandable, but there were many words I could not catch, and the person who escorted me to my Room was wearing slippers that clearly did not fit, and the loud slapping sound was distracting. My time in the building was pleasant, but after checkout, I was left extremely uncomfortable with how my shoes were returned. This is simply my impression of how different it felt compared with 18 years ago.

    This was my first st...

    This was my first stay, traveling with my mother. Although it was a weekday, there were many guests at check-in, which showed how popular the Accommodation is. We stayed in the Annex, and the Room was very quiet and spacious. The in-room Onsen bath was also a good size, so we were able to relax and take our time. The changing area at the large public bath had private booths for using hair dryers and similar amenities, which was excellent. Also, as I am currently pregnant, I informed them in advance that I cannot have alcohol or raw foods. They were extremely considerate and even adjusted the menu for me, which I truly appreciated. The portions were served little by little with a wide variety of dishes; everything was delicious and very satisfying. One downside was that the staff member serving our meal handled some items a bit roughly, and I noticed they used a piece of paper that had been dropped on the floor to place cutlery on it, which was disappointing.

    Yugawara Onsen with Excellent Water Quality

    This was our second stay. This time, we brought my elderly mother and stayed as a group of three, so we reserved a larger Room. It was very spacious, with a Western-style twin bedroom and a Japanese-style dining room, an indoor bath and open-air bath, and two toilets. Since dinner was served in the Room at a table, even a long meal felt comfortable, and we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast—they were delicious. The open-air bath was wonderful while looking out over the private-feeling garden. The changing area is heated as well, which was especially nice for my elderly mother. Once again, the Onsen and meals were outstanding. Yugawara is an Onsen town with many Accommodations, but Kaiseikiro feels truly relaxing. We would love to visit again. Thank you to all the staff for your hospitality.

    Maternity Trip

    We stayed here for my wife’s maternity trip. Since we chose a Room with an open-air bath, we were able to enjoy the Onsen with peace of mind without using the public bath. They also prepared meals suitable for a pregnant guest, and we were able to relax and enjoy them in our Room. The service was consistently very attentive, making it a happy and memorable trip. We would love to stay again.

    This is a wonderful Onsen Hotel.

    My family stayed for one night. The Facility was excellent, and the service was very good. The kaiseki cuisine in particular was extremely delicious. I would like to visit again in a different season.

    The meals are exceptionally delicious!

    This is our favorite Accommodation, and we’ve been visiting almost every year for about the past 10 years. We were welcomed by the same attendant who looked after us before, saying, “Welcome back. How have you been?”—and with that warm, comforting feeling, we headed to the Onsen. It was almost like having it all to ourselves, and we fully enjoyed the waters of Yugawara. The greatest highlight is dinner. It’s always delicious, but this time something felt different. While preserving the flavors of this long-established inn, it also felt like you were taking on new challenges—every dish was truly impressive! Our whole family said, “This is the best menu ever.” To keep evolving like this is genuinely amazing. Kaiseikiro never fails to capture my heart and won’t let go. This stay was wonderful as well. Thank you very much!

    Overall, everything ...

    Overall, everything was excellent, including the food, service, and baths. The food was particularly delicious with a great selection of sake. The Onsen experience was also wonderful; the private open-air bath in the room was spacious and enjoyable, and the large public bath was fantastic as well. However, there were some drawbacks during our stay at the guesthouse. While the room was spacious with an excellent view, there were not enough humidifiers. Using the heater made it very dry inside. At bedtime, even after moving two additional humidifiers from other areas to have three in total running simultaneously, it still wasn't sufficient to maintain proper humidity levels. Additionally, the humidifier filters had not been cleaned properly; when refilling water into them, they lacked cleanliness which likely affected their performance significantly—this aspect was disappointing. Furthermore, since there is a sauna in the large public bath area already available for guests to enjoy relaxation fully adding chairs or a cold plunge pool would enhance this experience even more!

    We were able to relax even with an infant.

    It was our first trip with our baby, and we were drawn to the option of in-room dining. When we informed the staff in advance that we would be traveling with an infant, they kindly prepared a baby futon and soap, as well as hot water for milk, which was greatly appreciated. Although our daughter cried at times, we were able to enjoy the private open-air bath and delicious meals in the Room, making it a very relaxing and satisfying experience! Thank you so much for your hospitality.

    Welcome back with our utmost respect!

    I revisited after my previous critical review. I based my evaluation on famous ryokans in Hakone, both of which are renowned historical brand ryokans. However, I believe their histories and management concepts differ. I started by giving 5 points to the Hakone brand ryokan and deducted points for disappointing aspects. Using this method, the final scores were almost identical. As expected, these are truly representative establishments of Hakone and Yugawara. The disappointing aspects (negative points) were common to both and largely subjective. I hope you visit and see for yourself!

    It was a very comfortable Ryokan.

    I had a relaxing New Year.

    We stayed at this long-established ryokan in Oku-Yugawara for the first time as a family, and it was a wonderful experience. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere inside the facility truly reflected the New Year spirit. While some parts of the facility and room showed their age, everything was impeccably clean. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the kaiseki cuisine—it was absolutely outstanding in presentation, quality, and quantity. Even our child (an elementary school student) enjoyed almost the same kaiseki meal as adults, making it a memorable experience for them as well. It was a perfect way to conclude our New Year celebrations. Thank you very much!

    Thank you for your support at the end of the year.

    We visited as a group of four, including my spouse and my daughter's family, and we were very satisfied with the Room, meals, and Onsen. However, one disappointing aspect was that the staff member who initially guided us to our Room mentioned being "very busy" and provided almost no explanation about the Room or Onsen. Their hurried demeanor was surprising and honestly disappointing as we had come to relax at Tsubaki. Fortunately, all other staff members were polite and attentive, allowing us to enjoy a pleasant stay overall. However, such an initial experience could negatively impact Tsubaki's reputation. We kindly ask for careful attention to ensure this does not happen in the future.

    I have been staying at Tsubaki Accommodation for 40 years, but this was my first visit since the staff changed. I could see that the staff were working very hard, but there is a gap if you expect the old Tsubaki. I believe this will be my last visit.

    Year-End Party 2025

    As a couple in our 60s, we frequently visit Onsen Ryokans around the Kanto area about once a month. This year’s year-end gathering was held at Tsubaki, marking our third stay here. As lovers of long baths, we were once again completely soothed by the soft and gentle waters. Even in midwinter, the view of the garden camellias through the large glass windows of the public bath was stunning—the vibrant green leaves and red flowers were vivid, allowing us to fully enjoy the charm of a rainy day. The meals were exceptional; dinner featured elegantly seasoned kaiseki cuisine with beautifully arranged dishes that delighted both our taste buds and eyes. Breakfast offered an impressively abundant variety that felt truly luxurious. Despite usually having small appetites, we happily finished everything. For me as a sake lover, I especially enjoyed indulging in Japanese sake, beer, and wine served at the lounge—everything was delicious as always. The staff remained friendly and attentive throughout our stay. We look forward to visiting again during another season. Thank you very much!

    A retro-style accomm...

    A retro-style accommodation in a quiet mountain area that evokes the Showa era, offering high hospitality and top-level meals that always satisfy, making it worth repeating multiple times. Both dinner and breakfast can be enjoyed in your room, which is another charm. There is also a walking path that feels more like strolling through the mountains than a garden. During this stay, we found a newly installed draft beer server at the post-bath lounge (free of charge, of course). We definitely want to visit again!

    Accommodation for couples in their 60s

    Stayed in a room at Hanabuki Accommodation. The spacious interior was well-cleaned and comfortable. However, the layout made moving between the bedroom and other rooms inconvenient, which might not be suitable for those with mobility concerns. The meals were all extremely delicious, with beautiful presentation and tableware, providing great satisfaction. However, dinner took about 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete; it would have been better if the dishes were served a bit faster. This is a wonderful accommodation with staff who show great hospitality, and I would love to visit again.
