Having stayed at retreat Hotels all over the whole country, I found this Retreat Onko Chishin to be outstanding in every way.The Room, bath, meals and drinks, and hospitality all delivered a high level of satisfaction, making for a truly pleasant stay.This Hotel has been reborn through the renovation of an existing Hotel, and the quality of the renovation and overall atmosphere were excellent.
At the recommendation of our son’s family, who had stayed here before, we stayed for the first time together with them. First, we were picked up at Izu-Atagawa Station in a retro car and taken to a Hotel with spectacular views overlooking the sea. From our spacious 104 m² Room, we could see the clear Pacific Ocean, and the view from the large open-air bath was outstanding. While relaxing before dinner, we enjoyed various delicious items via room service and had a wonderful time as a family. Dinner was excellent across the board; they also prepared a birthday plate for us and even gifted us commemorative photos of the celebration, which made us very happy. For our one-year-old child, they provided a baby crib, baby bath, and diaper disposal bin, which was extremely helpful. The staff’s warm service with friendly smiles was also very pleasant. Thanks to that, we were able to fully enjoy two miraculously sunny days amid otherwise rainy weather. Given the nature-rich surroundings it may be unavoidable, but it was unexpected—and quite surprising—to see a large number of stink bugs gathering on the walls and ceiling around the open-air bath. If some measures could be taken, it would make the stay even more comfortable.

The origin of Atagawa Onsen is said to date back to when rising steam was spotted billowing up from the ground in a field, and the area was named “Atagawa” (“hot river”). Later, in 1931, drilling succeeded in tapping naturally flowing hot spring sources, and during Japan’s postwar period of rapid economic growth it reached its peak amid the group travel boom. As a “Showa-era Onsen town” blessed with abundant hot spring water, it continues to soothe travelers in both body and mind. *Even today, it boasts Japan’s highest number of drilling towers per unit area—13 in total.*
