    Summer in Yugawara

Our two families had a relaxing stay. Since we visited in summer, the lush greenery spreading out beyond the Room windows was beautiful. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and even our elementary-school son—who isn’t fond of kaiseki cuisine—ate well. (He was very satisfied with meals that were almost the same as an adult’s.) He also seemed to enjoy going outside to catch rhinoceros beetles and stag beetles. The building overall felt a bit old, but the Room was very clean, and the water temperature in the open-air bath was just right—it felt great no matter how many times we soaked. Since it was summer, many cicadas came to visit the balcony. If you’re not comfortable with insects, it may be best to choose your season accordingly.

Highly recommended for families traveling with babies.

We stayed here for our first trip since our child was born. All the staff were kind, and we were very satisfied with the baby food we requested! The open-air bath in the Room was wonderful and incredibly relaxing. I think this will be a lifelong memory.

It was a luxurious space where I could enjoy complete privacy.

I booked the Room-assigned Plan this time, and was shown to a detached guest room down the slope from the main house. Thanks to that, it was perfect for a solo trip—I could enjoy a completely secluded stay without running into other guests or hearing any conversations. In the open-air bath in the Room, I was able to enjoy a comfortable Onsen soak many times—day, night, and morning—surrounded by Yugawara’s deep greenery and silence, where only a relaxed sense of time flowed. The kaiseki cuisine was also excellent, and although I tend to eat quickly when dining alone, I was impressed by how smoothly each course was served at just the right timing. Everyone welcomed me with constant smiles, and I am truly grateful for such a pleasant stay. It was an Accommodation I sincerely want to visit again.

We stayed for one night to celebrate my partner’s birthday. This was our third stay. Thank you very much for your heartfelt and warm hospitality throughout our visit. The wonderful whole cake you prepared for the celebration was so light that we finished it easily, even after a full meal. You also helped us with a small issue, and we were both truly touched by your thoughtful attention to detail. Thanks to the delicious food, the wonderful Onsen, and everyone’s kindness, we were able to forget our busy daily lives and enjoy a special time of true relaxation. We would love to visit again next year.

    I was able to relax.

This was my second trip to Yugawara this month, so instead of my usual Accommodation I stayed at Kaiseki Ryoan Ashikari, which I’d been curious about for some time. In conclusion, it was an excellent Accommodation and I would like to stay again. The only disappointments were two points: the tuna sashimi at dinner had a drip that looked like fresh blood, and the clam miso soup at breakfast hadn’t been purged of sand well enough. Other than that, everything was great—the hospitality including the Shuttle Service, and the Facility. The Room in particular was very relaxing. It had tatami flooring with futons, but unlike a typical Japanese-style room there were no partitions at all except for the toilet area. The balcony side was entirely glass-fronted. The walk-in shower booth was also glass-enclosed and came with a standard rain-head shower. A yoga mat was provided as well; if the open-air bath on the balcony were a private pool, it would feel like a pavilion-style resort in Ubud (perhaps this Japanese-style Room was inspired by that kind of design). Tokyo was scorching that day at around 35°C, but after soaking in the open-air bath and looking out over Yugawara’s forest from the balcony, I barely felt any heat. In the Room, just throwing on a bathrobe made it incredibly easy to unwind.

    Extremely satisfied

I visited for a quick one-night getaway to refresh. Since COVID, many Hotels and Ryokan I used to like have reduced their amenities, so when I travel I bring everything I might need just in case. However, this time I didn’t need to use any of my own items at all. That alone impressed me greatly, and the Room was beautifully designed and thoughtfully arranged to feel spacious and relaxing. The private open-air bath was exactly to my taste in terms of the view, temperature, and water volume. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and elegantly prepared, and the wide selection of drinks made it hard to choose. The attendant who served our meals was cheerful, which made our stay even more enjoyable. I think this is a truly wonderful Accommodation that holds nothing back in every respect. I will visit again soon.

    Traveling with a Baby

This was our first trip with our 9-month-old baby and my parents. The purpose was a birthday trip for my parents, but since we were traveling with a baby, we were looking for an Accommodation where our baby could also stay comfortably—and we found this one. We stayed in the Kakuyama Room. It was a wonderful space, with two beds and a tatami area where our baby could crawl around easily. There were also plenty of baby items available, which was very helpful. Each dish was carefully prepared and everything was delicious. The beautiful presentation and variety made my parents very happy as well. We added the kinmedai (splendid alfonsino) course, and the fish was so large that even the three of us could barely finish it—we were amazed! Even when our son got fussy and cried, every staff member spoke to us kindly and helped soothe him, which meant a lot to us. It became a truly lovely trip. Thank you very much.

The Accommodation, the meals, and the staff were all excellent.

We stayed as a family of four: a couple with our 7-year-old and 1-year-old children. We have visited several other Accommodations considered “luxury,” but for our family right now, this was the best Accommodation. The Room was spotless, and both the tatami and the in-room bath were very comfortable. All of the staff were courteous and kind, and our children were thrilled. We usually prefer dining in a restaurant setting, but this time we chose an in-room dining Plan—and it was absolutely the right choice. We’re normally busy eating while looking after the kids, but with in-room dining we didn’t have to worry about others around us, and our children could relax freely in the spacious Room. For the first time in a while, we were able to take our time and truly enjoy a delicious meal. During our stay, my wife and I kept saying how much we wanted to come back. After getting a recommendation for which Room to choose next time from one of the attendants, we made another Reservation on the spot. We’re already looking forward to it. Thank you for such a wonderful stay.

    Perfect for parent-child trips!

I stayed on 6/15–6/16. I had stayed here once more than 10 years ago and remembered it as a wonderful Accommodation, so I made another Reservation. Back then, I recall taking a walk through the Japanese garden. It has been beautifully renovated to suit the times, and in the Room we stayed in this time, we could see twinkling stars from the open-air bath outdoors—my mother and I were truly moved. The staff’s hospitality was exceptional, and my elderly mother was able to relax and feel at ease throughout our stay. Thank you very much.

It was a wonderful welcome-baby stay.

We stayed here as a “Welcome Baby” Accommodation. The staff were attentive and efficient, and we had a wonderful time. They provided thoughtful baby-friendly support such as cleaning and sterilizing feeding items and preparing pure water, which made us want to stay again.

Your First Trip with Your 6-Month-Old Baby

Thank you very much for taking such great care of us. This was our first trip with our 6-month-old son, and thanks to the support of your staff, it became a truly enjoyable experience and a wonderful memory. I accidentally forgot the water for preparing formula and was thinking I would need to make cooled boiled water, but when you brought the formula kettle we requested, you thoughtfully included water for formula as well. We were truly grateful. Your kind staff also spoke to our son so much, and he looked very happy. Not only our baby, but we adults were able to enjoy a luxurious time as well. Seasonal cuisine and an in-Room Onsen bath while listening to birdsong. In particular, spending time in the lobby surrounded by lush greenery—soothing him to sleep in a baby carrier while reading magazines with a drink in hand—was pure bliss. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    It was wonderful!

It was wonderful! This was our first trip with our 4-month-old baby, and from the moment we arrived they helped carry our luggage, which was a huge help for us since we tend to worry and travel with a lot of bags. All the staff greeted our baby as well, so we felt very comfortable throughout our stay. The in-Room meals were served flexibly at our pace, and I highly recommend this place for a first trip with a baby!

    A bit disappointing.

I stayed in the Room called Sagamiji. The Room, the food, and the view from the Room were all wonderful, but the terrace blinds were old and very difficult to use, which was a struggle, and there was bird droppings on the terrace sofa. If it had happened that day, I could understand, but it seemed hard and old, so I wondered if it hadn’t been cleaned. What disappointed me most was that the carpets laid at the entrance area, along the corridor, and at the Room entrance were covered in stains, which really brought my mood down every time I walked by. On top of that, the corridor smelled musty. Since this is a hospitality business, I think you should invest in what guests can see. Even though the Room itself, its view, and the food are excellent, it feels like all of that is ruined by how dirty and smelly the floors are. It also made me think that’s why no one even noticed the bird droppings. It just feels like such a waste.

    Family-friendly

We stayed with our 11-month-old child. It was a calm, relaxing space that adults can enjoy, yet very child-friendly, so we felt at ease throughout our stay. From the baby menu, we could choose no seasoning, light seasoning, or regular seasoning; even the unseasoned option had great broth flavor and was delicious for adults too, and our child ate it eagerly! We also appreciated that the dining area was separated from the adults-only section. The bath in the Room was spacious enough to stretch out our legs and felt wonderful.

    We stayed here to ce...

We stayed here to celebrate my husband’s birthday, paying over 150,000 yen for one night. The staff were kind and handled an issue during the meal sincerely, for which I am grateful. However, even taking that into account, I cannot say this Accommodation was worth the price, and it ended up being a very disappointing stay. The Room was not thoroughly cleaned overall; dust and grime were noticeable in the corners. There was also an unpleasant odor throughout the Room. When I asked a staff member, “The smell is a bit concerning—could it be the scent of wood?”, they only replied, “That may be part of it,” with no effort to identify the cause or offer any alternatives. Part of the privacy blind for the open-air bath was broken; we were told, “It probably can’t be seen,” but it seemed clearly visible from nearby houses and the road. There were also areas where wood on a pillar was peeling off, which felt dangerous as my two-year-old son tried to touch it. Inside the building as well, stains on the hallways and carpets stood out, and overall it did not feel clean in a way you would expect from a luxury Ryokan. The large public bath in particular was old and small, with lukewarm water—very different from what we expected from an upscale Onsen Ryokan. At dinner, as soon as we sat down, several small insects were swarming around my son’s tableware. We were moved to another table immediately, but after that we could not relax or focus on our meal. The food itself also did not feel especially satisfying for this price range. We made our Reservation because this is marketed as a baby-welcome Accommodation. However, I paid this price not only because it is child-friendly—I expected a high-quality stay where adults could also enjoy something special and out of the ordinary. If you are simply looking for an Accommodation that is good with children, there are many more reasonably priced options with higher satisfaction. I have stayed at many Accommodations over the years, but this was my first time feeling such a large gap between price and what was offered. Because it was an important birthday trip for my husband, it made me truly sad. While I appreciate how the staff responded overall, that alone could not make up for my dissatisfaction with the Facility and equipment. Personally, I would not choose to stay here again.

    Celebration of Longevity

We visited to celebrate my wife’s parents’ longevity. The spacious Room, the open-air bath, and the chef’s heartfelt kaiseki cuisine, along with the staff’s warm smiles, made my parents say it was their greatest treasure. Thank you very much.

    Allergy-friendly options available

Even though I informed you of my allergies in advance, the allergen still appeared at both dinner and breakfast, which was shocking. As an adult I can avoid it, but thinking about what could have happened if it were a child was terrifying. There seemed to be plenty of staff, but it was sad to feel that attention and care weren’t being given where it mattered most.

It was a very kind and welcoming Accommodation.

Thank you very much for kindly accommodating our last-minute request to add one more guest (my mother). It was a four-generation trip with my daughter and grandchild, and thanks to your warm hospitality we had a very comfortable one-night stay. As we were traveling with a baby and unloading lots of luggage from the car, several staff members came to help, carried our bags to the Room, promptly sterilized the baby bottles and brought them back right away—everyone was so kind that we truly felt at ease throughout our stay. The bath was spacious, the Room was clean and comfortable, and since we chose in-room dining, everything could be done in the Room, which made this Accommodation perfect for families with a baby. We would love to stay with you again. Thank you very much!

    A Luxurious Stay

Everything was taken care of, and there was nothing to fault—those words say it all. That’s the kind of Accommodation it was. The Onsen, the Room, the meals, and the staff—thanks to all of them, we were able to enjoy a truly luxurious time. We were lucky to find such a wonderful Accommodation. Thank you very much. We would love to visit again. Additional note: I gave four stars for the Facility category because part of a hallway had a low ceiling, and although it was due to my own carelessness, I almost hit my head. That said, it’s only because I’m slightly tall, so I hesitated to deduct a star—but in my selfish way of thinking, something like 4.999 rather than 5.0 somehow feels even more impressive.

    Dining counter seating

Overall, the service, Room, and meals were good, but dinner was served at a counter seat facing the window. The biggest issue was that when I tried to take photos of the food, the light was behind me, so my shadow appeared on the dishes. If guests are expected to be satisfied with a counter seat facing outside, I think the garden should be better maintained and have some indirect lighting. The same applies to the semi-suite’s outdoor bath—the surrounding area felt like untouched forest where it seemed a bear could appear at any moment, which was disappointing. However, I was satisfied with the service and staff attitude overall, and considering the value for money of the semi-suite’s Facility, I am satisfied. I think it is a good Ryokan.

    Hagi Room

Escorted to our Room, the moment I opened the door and saw how clean, spacious, and bright it was, I felt glad we came. Although it was raining, we were still able to comfortably enjoy the private open-air bath in the Room (on rainy days, a sheet is placed over the roof). It was also great that we could freely top up the 55°C spring water. The food was delicious as well; the soup featured a pureed corn potage-style broth, and there were many distinctive dishes—everything exceeded our expectations. All of the staff were very courteous, and we truly had a relaxing time. If I had to mention one thing, check-in guidance took a little time. Other than that, it’s a perfect Accommodation.

    Throughout the property...

I wanted to visit an Onsen close to Tokyo, so I chose this Accommodation in Yugawara. The Shuttle Service from Yugawara Station was very helpful.\nThere were thoughtful touches throughout the Room—nail clippers, a charger, and two yukata prepared from the start. There is also samue loungewear. Above the open-air bath is a roof that can be operated by remote control, so I was able to enjoy the bath without getting wet even when it rained.\nThe meals were delicious as well. I was especially impressed at breakfast when the proprietress served us properly dressed in a kimono. In my experience, Accommodations personally run by the proprietress rarely disappoint.\nThe large public bath alternates between morning and evening, which gave it a different atmosphere each time and was great. Towels and amenities were well stocked, and there were complimentary ice cream and drinks, including juice for children—so it seems suitable for families traveling with kids.\nThe souvenir corner was also well stocked. The international staff worked very hard, and it was clear they had been well trained.\nOne concern was mold on the floor of the shower area in the Room; it would be easy to clean quickly with mold remover. Also, regarding footwear provided for guests staying in detached rooms: I think it would be better if there were a clear way to tell which pair is yours from start to finish.\nIt’s a wonderful Accommodation and I’d love to visit again. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    Exquisite Hospitality

We stayed here to celebrate our anniversary trip as a couple. From check-in, we were warmly welcomed with cold tea, a hot towel, and wasanbon rakugan sweets, and the hospitality was so soothing after our journey. We also appreciated the thoughtful selection of in-room amenities and the wide variety of complimentary drinks—everything felt well prepared for different situations. And above all, the meals were outstanding!! We chose the kaiseki course; there were many dishes and we were completely full, yet each one was carefully prepared and absolutely delicious. The tableware and presentation are also a delight. We were truly surprised by how good the white rice was as well. This time, we chose “Ashikari” with the goal of fully enjoying the Accommodation—and it was exactly the right choice! We would love to stay again.

This was our third stay. As we have a 15-month-old grandchild, having meals served in the Room, as on our previous visit, was a great help. The Room was smaller than last time, but the view was lovely and we were more than satisfied. The meals are always delicious, beautifully presented with vibrant colors that whet the appetite even before eating. We are grateful to the staff who brought our meals to the Room for their kind and courteous service. All of the other staff were also pleasant and considerate. Thank you very much. We look forward to staying with you again and appreciate your continued support.

I was soothed by the attentive service!

Our group of women in our 70s and 80s stayed for the first time for two nights on a light-meal dining Plan. Since we have mobility issues, the stairs inside the Hotel were a bit challenging, but we truly appreciated the staff’s thoughtful attention and warm smiles. We were also happy that towels were available as much as we needed, and that the Hotel-style amenities were well stocked. The seasoning of the meals was just right even for elderly women, and every dish was so delicious that we ended up eating more than we intended!

    It’s quite lovely!

This was my first stay, and I had high expectations. All of the staff were pleasant and made me feel very comfortable. The Room opened out onto magnificent nature at all times, which felt wonderfully freeing. The in-room bath was also fed directly from the hot spring source, and it was extremely relaxing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stroll around the garden, and there wasn’t anywhere nearby for a casual walk either. Dinner was carefully prepared and lightly seasoned, and I enjoyed it very much. The dried fish at breakfast didn’t meet my expectations, but the rice was so delicious that I had seconds. Regarding the coffee service: lately it seems to be a trend to provide capsule coffee machines. As a coffee lover, that was disappointing.

We enjoyed the open-air bath in our room surrounded by trees, along with the beautiful views and delicious cuisine.

The Room we were shown had a full floor-to-ceiling glass front. The view—lush trees up close and the Hakone outer rim mountains in the distance—far exceeded our expectations. There was plenty of space with both tatami and wooden flooring, and we enjoyed coffee from the espresso machine while taking in a scenery we never tired of. What makes the open-air bath in the guest room so wonderful is that it feels like bathing among the trees. The terrace with the tub had no privacy fence, offering an incredible sense of openness. We were blessed with fine weather during our stay, but since there is a motorized roof cover, an open-air bath in the rain might be enjoyable as well. The large public baths, “Takane-no-Yu” and “Kusamakura-no-Yu,” offered semi-open-air-like views. The highly transparent water sparkled in the sunlight—truly exceptional hot springs. For dinner, we chose the “Small-portion Kaiseki Plan” to avoid overeating, and it was just the right amount for us. Starting with local plum liqueur as an IKYU Diamond benefit, every dish was delicious. We felt it was a highly satisfying Plan that’s kind to both stomach and wallet. Breakfast the next morning also featured an array of beautifully presented dishes, making for a pleasant start to the day. After checkout, when we mentioned going to nearby Manyo Park, a staff member in kimono kindly drove us there. With so many slopes in the area, we truly appreciated it. We selected this Room based on photos on the website and AI advice, and it turned out to be exactly what we hoped for—a perfect choice. It seems that views and atmosphere vary depending on each room’s orientation at this Accommodation, so if you care about scenery, we recommend consulting with them in advance.

    It was very comfortable.

Standard Room stay. The property is compact overall and very convenient, and the open-air bath in the guest Room features a skin-friendly Onsen. It has a homey atmosphere, and the staff’s smiles were wonderful. Free Shuttle Service available. The small-portion kaiseki Plan was delicious, and we finished everything.
