    Anniversary Trip

    We visited by car to celebrate a family birthday. With high expectations based on the great reviews on IKYU.com, we were excited to stay. As expected, the accommodation was beautiful from the exterior, and we were warmly welcomed with smiles and excellent service from the staff from the parking lot to check-in. Although there were stairs and some distance between the front desk and our room, clear directions and beautifully arranged flowers along the way made it easy to navigate. Our room this time was a semi-suite called "Kaguyama." The brightness and layout of the room left us in awe as soon as we entered. The space was incredibly comfortable, making our stay highly satisfying. We were fortunate enough to enjoy early-blooming cherry blossoms visible from both our room and private open-air bath, which added even more delight. Dinner exceeded all expectations with its flavors, portions, and stunning presentation. The pairing of drinks offered a wide variety that perfectly complemented each dish. The menu handcrafted by the head chef showcased their exceptional skills with thoughtful details throughout. For our family member's birthday celebration, they provided a dessert plate with a heartfelt message along with a handkerchief gift—this thoughtful gesture made for an even more memorable celebration. In addition to enjoying Onsen in our room's private bath, we also experienced the large public bath area. While it felt quite cold due to window adjustments being slightly off during wintertime conditions outside of bathing hours—it became cozy once immersed in warm waters. Breakfast next morning continued impressively: delicious taste combined well-balanced portion sizes alongside visually appealing dishes featuring abundant side options accompanying rice refills essential! Check-out process went smoothly too; overall leaving lasting impressions about how wonderful everything turned out here at such charming accommodations worth revisiting someday soon again! Young yet professional staff members' attentive hospitality reflected traditional excellence associated long-standing establishments like theirs truly enhanced joyous commemorative trip experience altogether!

    Relaxing

    The staff's service and meals were excellent. Thank you. The Room was also spacious and comfortable. However, the public bath was cold, and the shower was not very satisfactory. I appreciated being able to warm up in the Room's bath in the morning, but I hope the public bath will be kept warmer during winter.

    Once more before the end of the year

    Stayed on 1/22-23. After checking the website, I felt that both the cuisine and the room matched my preferences, so I had planned to visit within this year. Upon arrival, it exceeded my expectations and was exactly as hoped for. The room was efficiently designed without unnecessary space, and the open-air bath was at a perfect temperature, allowing me to relax while enjoying the mountain view. The cuisine was just the right amount for me, with sashimi being particularly delicious. I hope to visit again within this year.

    A rare and welcoming accommodation for solo travelers

    Stayed in a room with an open-air bath for single use, with adjustable meal content and portions. I became a fan after staying here last year and revisited in a detached room. The open-air bath is spacious enough to stretch out completely, quiet, and offers a sense of openness. The temperature can be adjusted upon request, ensuring it’s always comfortable. I enjoyed listening to the calls of bulbuls while soaking in the bath amidst occasional snowfall—repeating the cycle of soaking and stepping out endlessly (laughs). They perfectly accommodate preferences for ingredients or portion sizes. While some places offering "small gourmet courses" still serve large amounts of standard items like abalone, lobster, beef, or crab piled high, this accommodation carefully listens to your requests. Undergoing chemotherapy with many food aversions and a small appetite made me truly appreciate being able to enjoy beautifully presented dishes that I could finish comfortably. Additionally, they completely separate dining areas from families with children so solo guests can dine peacefully. This is an exceptionally rare accommodation that pays close attention to solo travelers' needs—though I worry about it becoming too popular and harder to book! Without question, this is highly recommended accommodation—I will definitely visit again!

    It was a very nice Ryokan.

    As per the reviews, it was a very good ryokan. Among the many traditional ryokans in Yugawara, the food here was exceptionally delicious. The presentation was beautiful, and the taste was just right. I would like to make a reservation again when the seasons change. The room we stayed in this time was just the right size for two people. If I had to point out something, it would be that the building is old and creaks a bit, which bothered me slightly. However, the food is truly remarkable!

    Family Trip

    The moment you enter the Room, you'll be greeted by a stunning view through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, creating a bright and open atmosphere for a relaxing and comfortable stay. The temperature of the open-air bath on the terrace was just right. The staff were friendly, and having meals served in the Room both in the morning and evening made for a leisurely and enjoyable stay.

    We visit every year and everything about this accommodation is exceptional, from the atmosphere and service to the meals and onsen. The wide selection of domestic wines is also a great attraction. One of the reasons we return is to meet the staff member we have a special connection with. We look forward to visiting again!

    Highly recommended for families with children.

    We stayed for one night with our 11-month-old baby (including breakfast and dinner). Everything, from the welcome at the entrance to guidance to the Room and meals, was excellent, and the staff's service was very courteous. There was also thoughtful consideration for our child, which made us very satisfied. We would love to stay here again when our child grows a little older.

    It was a great accommodation.

    The room was clean and well-maintained, giving a very tidy impression. The beverages and teacups provided in the room were also pleasant. The amenities were plentiful, which was delightful. Although the site mentioned there would be no nightwear, we appreciated that yukata robes were provided. We thoroughly enjoyed the private open-air hot spring bath in the room. We would love to stay here again!

    Meals and Rooms that satisfy adults, baths and services that delight children.

    We stayed at the accommodation with our family in December. The room was very spacious, and the sunlight streaming through the large windows in the morning was impressive. The view from the open-air bath was also stunning, providing a truly relaxing experience. Meals were served at just the right timing, each dish delicate, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared. Being able to dine in our room with our child allowed us to enjoy a leisurely time at our own pace without worrying about others. There were plenty of menu options suitable for our 1-year-old child, making mealtime stress-free and enjoyable. We also appreciated being able to choose seasoning levels for dishes. The complimentary ice cream and cold drinks after bathing were delightful touches, and we felt comfortable throughout thanks to the warm and attentive service of the staff. We would love to stay here again as a family!

    Enjoyed my stay for the fourth time as well.

    This was our fourth year-end stay. My mother, who joined me, is always very pleased, and it has become a year-end treat for me as well. The meals, room, service, and bath are all excellent, and I look forward to this year-end stay throughout the year. Highly recommended accommodation!

    A historic accommodation quietly nestled away, yet featuring renovated modern rooms that are spacious, comfortable, and perfect for unwinding from daily life. The rooms with private open-air baths and the large communal baths were kept impeccably clean, and the amenities were well-stocked for a pleasant experience. Despite being year-end with many guests, the dining area was partitioned into semi-private spaces, allowing for a sense of privacy while enjoying elegantly flavored dishes paired with Japanese wine. The large glass windows at the front offered a view of the expansive garden, creating an open atmosphere; however, the provided samue in the room felt slightly chilly. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again during the beautiful season of fresh greenery.

    We chose to stay here for a special occasion after hearing great reviews from a friend. The natural thoughtfulness and genuine hospitality of the staff were truly impressive. The meals were absolutely delicious, with breakfast offering a wide variety of dishes—I even finished an entire pot of rice!     Very relaxing.

    Stayed during Christmas. The room had a private bath, allowing for a relaxing stay. The meals were delicious, and the staff's attentiveness was excellent. I was personally delighted that the showerheads in the large public bath were ReFa.

    A subtly elegant Ryokan

    Gentle hot water, attentive service, and the comfort of enjoying meals leisurely in the room both at night and in the morning made for a pleasant stay. Each room had an open-air bath with perfectly maintained temperature at any time. Additionally, we appreciated having the kaiseki cuisine served in small portions. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again and highly recommend.

    Comfortable Accommodation in Yugawara

    I had the pleasure of staying at Kaiseki Ryokan Ashikari. The warm welcome upon arrival, the reception, and the attentiveness of the staff are truly signs of a great accommodation. The room was bright with a full glass window on one side, creating an atmosphere that made me want to stay in the room all day. I was delighted to find mandarin orange liquor on the drink menu during meals. While there seemed to be a wide variety of alcoholic beverages available, I couldn't enjoy much due to being quite full from the generous meal portions. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay. If I were to make any requests, it would be regarding privacy in the open-air bath area as it is somewhat visible from distant houses—though probably not noticeable without binoculars—and perhaps adding an extra door between the entrance and room for better sound insulation from hallway or restroom noises. Regardless, this is a wonderful accommodation that I would love to visit again!

    The Ryokan offers a primarily traditional Japanese atmosphere, but with a modern touch that avoids feeling outdated. Guests can enjoy a comfortable Onsen experience and delicious meals in this stylish setting. Visitors come not only from Japan but also from overseas, and English support seems to be well-handled.     This was our first time staying here. We stayed as a couple to enjoy the onsen during the winter season. From the warm welcome at the entrance to the excellent room and meals, everything was wonderful! Although we had planned to take a taxi to the station on our way back, we were very grateful for the shuttle service provided. We would love to stay here again next time. Thank you so much!

    The meals were delicious with just the right portions, the Room was comfortable, and the service was heartfelt. I would love to visit again soon with my family. I was also pleased that they accommodated allergies and served sweetened walnuts instead. The homemade plum wine was excellent.

    This trip became an unforgettable and wonderful experience for our family. The room had high ceilings, offering a sense of openness, and the stylish Japanese-style design allowed us to relax comfortably with our children. The Onsen in the room was particularly delightful, with beautiful ambient lighting and stunning views that we enjoyed both at night and in the morning. What impressed us most was being able to enjoy warm and delicious meals together as a couple, even with our 8-month-old baby. The provided Bumbo seat made feeding time smooth, so much so that we are considering purchasing one for home use—it was incredibly convenient! The availability of baby goods was truly helpful. Usually, we return from trips feeling more tired than before we left, but this time it was different—we genuinely felt "rejuvenated" for the first time ever. Thank you so much!

    Unfortunately, it turned out to be a disappointing trip.

    The ryokan was sophisticated and clean as expected. Since I was pregnant, they thoughtfully provided dinner options such as non-raw foods and caffeine-free tea, which allowed me to enjoy the meal with my husband. However, despite requesting a birthday plate in advance, we were kept waiting for nearly 30 minutes due to what seemed like a preparation oversight, which was disappointing. After returning to our room and enjoying the open-air bath, we were disturbed by children staying on the upper floor running around noisily even close to 10 PM. The noise echoed throughout our room. Assuming it would stop soon but finding it didn’t, I called reception who said they would address it; however, the noise persisted. At 10:30 PM, frustrated by the situation not improving, I called reception again. Only then did the running noises cease—but by that time we had already endured an unpleasant experience. I noticed similar complaints in other reviews and regret not taking them into account earlier. If there is a history of such issues with this room’s location under certain circumstances or guests above causing disturbances late at night, measures should be taken—such as leaving these rooms unoccupied—to ensure no guest has an uncomfortable stay like ours. Surely avoiding customer disputes or complaints is also in the ryokan's best interest. This incident overshadowed all other positive memories for both my husband and me during our stay here—it turned everything into negative recollections instead of enjoyable ones. We paid a high price only to have this kind of experience. As for breakfast—it was served cold entirely; while visually appealing on presentation alone—it failed to satisfy overall expectations. I hope management will reconsider their operational policies based on feedback like this review moving forward. For future stays at another ryokan elsewhere—we’ve decided beforehand always asking about who might occupy floors above us before completing any reservation—a valuable lesson learned from this experience!

    First, be amazed by the autumn leaves visible from the lobby. Then, be impressed by the view and the spacious bath in your room. Finally, enjoy complete satisfaction with the delicious dinner. While many accommodations of this class serve mixed rice, their carefully selected white rice and pickles were exceptional.

The creatively prepared dishes were served in small portions, making it an enjoyable experience, though there were fewer warm dishes. This accommodation features rooms with open-air baths where you can enjoy beautiful scenery and leisurely moments. A multiple night stay is recommended for ultimate relaxation. Please note that there are some steps within the property, so caution is advised when moving around (no issues for those with good mobility).

    This was my first time using this accommodation. It had been a while since I stayed at a traditional Japanese-style Ryokan. At the time of reservation, there were no available rooms with beds, so I stayed in a room with futons for the first time in years. However, upon arrival, I found that the renovations were well done. The lobby lounge was bright and spacious with ample natural light, and the room had a modern yet simple and calming design. This visit was primarily to enjoy the Onsen and delicious meals. As expected, the private Onsen in our room was quite spacious, and we enjoyed it multiple times. Of course, we also used the large public bath to relax fully and were delighted by complimentary ice cream at the relaxation area afterward. For dinner, we opted for a light Kaiseki course meal. While I sometimes leave food unfinished at Ryokans due to large portions, this time I managed to finish everything! The meal featured rare ingredients such as shark fin, kinki fish, domestic duck meat, and Ezo deer—all of which were delightful. Additionally, they offered authentic non-alcoholic wine options for those who don't drink alcohol—a thoughtful touch that made me happy! Lastly, while we thoroughly enjoyed both the Onsen and meals as planned during our stay on an extremely cold winter day—the single air conditioner in our spacious room struggled to keep it warm after sunset comfortably. Perhaps having heated carpets or Kotatsu would have helped improve comfort during such conditions. Nonetheless, all staff members were cheerful and provided courteous service throughout our stay—making it very pleasant overall! Thank you very much!
