Experience the seasons and charm of Munakata at a traditional French auberge in a renovated farmhouse.
Akamа and Saburōmaru, Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Set in a traditional Japanese house built in 1887, “Auberge Cara Munakata” serves seasonal French cuisine.
The kitchen is led by Hideji Uemura, former owner-chef of the locally acclaimed French restaurant “Yukiya.” Having fallen in love with this area and made it his home, he carefully selects ingredients from the sea and nearby fields, capturing fleeting moments of flavor on each plate. Free from excess embellishment, his cooking leaves a quiet, lasting finish—this is the cuisine he pursues.
He says:
“I want to elevate the value of Munakata—its nature, its people, its land—through food. I want locals to feel proud of their produce and seafood, and to bring out their full potential.”
Uemura’s dishes make the most of local ingredients while favoring elegance over force. They may not be flashy, but from the first bite they gently ease both body and mind.
Guest rooms feature antique furniture curated by a stylist, IKEUCHI ORGANIC towels, and eco-conscious amenities from THANN (a natural skincare brand from Thailand).
In the garden you’ll also find a wood-fired Goemon-style bath for an immersive taste of timeless Japan. Through both dining and stay alike, enjoy time that lets you savor Munakata’s richness deep within.
