A Perfect Space to Awaken Your Senses

A one-night, two-day digital detox surrounded by books and nature in a stylish space was incredibly healing, offering a luxurious experience. The staff's warm smiles and excellent service made us feel at ease, and it had been a long time since we slept so soundly, feeling our tired minds and bodies completely relaxed. At the check-in café, we were welcomed with champagne and traditional snacks in an antique atmosphere while receiving explanations about the hotel and nearby exploration tips. Our luggage was kindly delivered to the room in advance, and we were later taken to the hotel in a tuk-tuk, adding a touch of elegance and fun. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted with welcome drinks, including local juices and beers, as well as unlimited roasted coffee—a delightful treat for coffee lovers. Entering the room, we found a beautiful space with an open-air bath where the sound of flowing water was soothing. The fridge was stocked with plenty of beverages, and the fluffy bedding and cushions made our stay even more enjoyable. We lost count of how many times we soaked in the open-air bath—it was that relaxing! The herbal-scented shampoo left our hair shiny and fragrant; we wished it was available for purchase. Dinner featured wood-fired dishes made from local ingredients, served as a course meal in an open kitchen setting. The unique dishes were a delight to savor. Although we usually drink international wines, we opted for pairing alcohol with each dish this time, enjoying Shinshu wine and sake. The exquisite flavors of Shinshu wine paired perfectly with the delicate cuisine, engaging all our senses—taste, sight, smell, hearing (with the crackling fire), and touch—leaving us feeling rejuvenated. There’s absolutely nothing negative to mention—this is our top recommendation! We look forward to staying again for another digital detox and sensory retreat.

    Thank you for your patronage.

Stayed here during a trip to Matsumoto after reading reviews. As expected, the staff were friendly, and I had a pleasant stay. Thank you very much. If I may suggest, having miso soup, white rice, and pickles for breakfast would have made it even more satisfying. These were not offered for either breakfast or dinner during my two-night stay. The quality of the bathwater and the free-flowing hot spring was enjoyable; however, it felt more like an indoor bath than a semi-open-air one. A large praying mantis came to rest its wings there, so in that sense, it was open-air! Haha

    It exceeded my expectations!

The room was more spacious than expected, and being on the 5th floor, the view was fantastic, offering a panoramic sight of the city and mountains. The open-air bath was also very large, providing ample space for two people to relax comfortably. We were extremely satisfied! During the happy hour from 4 PM to 5 PM, we enjoyed beer while sitting outside in the pleasant weather, feeling completely at ease. The meals were absolutely delicious with no complaints about taste; they were also beautifully presented with great attention to detail, making it an enjoyable experience. Even the game meat had no unpleasant odor and was incredibly tasty. There were plenty of books available—perfect for book lovers—and even picture books and some manga for others to enjoy casually. On-site amenities included a bakery and shops, plus opportunities to explore the surrounding town; there wasn’t enough time to fully enjoy everything! This has become one of our favorite accommodations that we’d love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    Reading and Onsen

The property is divided into family-friendly and adults-only buildings, allowing guests to relax without worry. A former bathroom space has been transformed into a playful area with children's books and a ball pit, providing enjoyment for both adults and children for extended periods. The Onsen in the room was lukewarm, perfect for long soaks while enjoying the beautiful starry sky. The Onsen on the first floor featured fresh, hotter spring water that kept us warm even after getting out. The children's restaurant was charming with plenty of toys, and every dish made with local vegetables was incredibly delicious. The restaurant staff were attentive, making it an enjoyable experience for the kids. Drinks and light snacks are available freely. Overall, the atmosphere emphasizes privacy, though interactions with front desk staff varied by individual and left a somewhat reserved impression.

    I had a relaxing stay.

The meals were delicious, and I was able to fully relax in the room with an open-air bath. The staff were kind, friendly, and wonderful. However, as a sports enthusiast, I chose a room with a TV so I wouldn't miss baseball or world athletics even while staying here. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi-connected TV kept disconnecting frequently. I had to turn it on and off repeatedly and wait for it to reconnect, which ultimately made it difficult to enjoy watching properly. This might not be a common issue, but TV lovers should take note of this potential inconvenience.

    You can relax and unwind.

The room was more spacious than I expected. The sink area was also large and easy to use. Above all, it was a relaxing space with great comfort, and I regretted checking in after 6 PM. It made me want a Multiple Night Stay. Reading books, occasional baths, delicious meals, and wine—it was perfect. Definitely coming back!

    Had a great time!

As a solo traveler, I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the private bath, reading books, and making the most of my stay. However, the meal course service was slow—it took 30 minutes from the reservation time for the first dish to arrive at my table, and subsequent dishes were also delayed, taking up a lot of time. The main pork dish was slightly dry and did not meet my expectations. The dessert, however, was delicious.

I have visited several times, and each time the selection of books and dishes changes, allowing me to enjoy my stay with a fresh perspective. This time, postcards with explanations of each dish were provided, which allowed me to savor the meals more deeply. I was impressed by how much thought is put into creating a unique experience for guests. The accommodation has always been excellent, but their constant efforts to update their hospitality are truly remarkable. Additionally, the stamp rally encouraging exploration around town was held again this time. Despite braving the intense heat to complete it, I found it slightly disappointing that the completion reward was a fan (last time it was a lunch bag). I look forward to visiting again in another season and will likely participate in the stamp rally if it's available! (laughs)

Be captivated by the power of design.

I stayed for two nights on a solo trip. The beautiful design, nature, cuisine, wisdom, and stories that fill the facility exude an invaluable charm beyond monetary value. The staff's dedication is evident everywhere, leaving me deeply moved with the thought, "This is what craftsmanship truly means." It’s a place where you can recharge and gain energy to thrive in the city.

A Hotel where you can enjoy meals, Onsen, and books.

Check-in is at the café "Oyaki and Coffee," where you can enjoy delicious coffee and chewy oyaki, setting an exciting tone for the start of your stay. The room is impeccably clean, offering a unique atmosphere to escape daily life. The slightly warm Onsen was incredibly relaxing, and I enjoyed it multiple times during my stay. Meals featured unique local flavors, such as the firm yet tender texture of Saku carp and the soft sweetness of Azumino free-range pork. Beyond being delicious, each dish offered a glimpse into the region's culture and history through food—a truly memorable dining experience that embodies the essence of travel. The smoky aroma from wood-fired cooking was also delightful. The bookstore creates an intriguing space where even books you wouldn't normally pick up catch your attention, making it easy to lose track of time while immersed in reading. From check-in to check-out, every staff member exuded natural hospitality that made me feel genuinely comfortable throughout my stay. Reflecting on it after returning home, I realized just how welcoming this Hotel truly is. I look forward to visiting again in a different season!

    Meals

The Room, Facility, service, and staff's hospitality are impeccable—truly outstanding. However, the meals were honestly disappointing. While it's commendable that there is a focus on local ingredients, everything served was unappetizing. It’s especially unfortunate given how excellent the staff's service was. If I stay again in the future, I will definitely opt for no meals included. The same applies to breakfast; none of the dishes felt suitable to start the day with. I had some hope for breakfast at least, but it turned out to be just as disappointing.

    The concept is wonderful, but...

The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were honestly disappointing. While the concept is good, it felt like the local ingredients were not fully utilized. The bath in the room is a semi-open-air bath, but it was neither particularly impressive nor disappointing. What truly stood out were the library, room design, complimentary drinks and snacks, and above all, the excellent service from the staff! Additionally, the "oyaki and coffee" at check-in and the Tuk-Tuk Shuttle Service from the parking lot were delightful touches. There are also wonderful public baths within walking distance of our property for you to enjoy as part of your overall experience in town.

A Trip to Matsumoto with Travel-Loving Friends

Deciding on a travel destination with friends who love to travel has become increasingly challenging each year. This time, we decided to take a spontaneous trip to Matsumoto without much planning. We visited Matsumoto Jujo without high expectations for the food, as meals often seem similar wherever we go. However, the dishes here were delightful, incorporating local vegetables and fermented foods skillfully. The meals were not only delicious but also heartwarming and fulfilling. Spending time browsing through numerous books in the library was also an enriching experience for the soul. The young staff members were well-trained; everyone greeted us with smiles and provided wonderful hospitality. The simple question, "Did you sleep well last night?" truly touched my heart! As for why I rated the Facility 4: ① Since there were three of us staying together, one of us used an extra bed that was quite narrow. While I could see how hard the staff worked, this aspect felt like a missed opportunity for improvement. Next time, I would love to visit with my husband instead. Thank you very much!

    It was excellent.

This was undoubtedly the most wonderful hotel I have ever stayed at...! The entire Matsumoto Jujo harmonizes beautifully with Nagano's nature, creating a nostalgic and calming atmosphere. It was such a relaxing space. The shuttle bus to Kamikochi made it incredibly convenient for sightseeing as well. **Room:** The room had high ceilings, offering a great sense of openness. My personal favorite feature was the Bose speaker installed in the room...! The amenities were abundant, including cleansing products, lotion, moisturizer, toothbrushes—everything you could need—which was very helpful for someone like me who prefers to travel light. The complimentary snacks like rice crackers and juice were also delicious...! The temperature of the private open-air bath in the room is intentionally set lower so you can enjoy long baths while reading a book. It felt amazing—I took four baths during my one-night stay. **Restaurant:** I enjoyed a course dinner in an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. The staff explained each dish in detail, using cards that felt like storytelling—it was fun! I sat at the counter seat where I could watch the chefs plating dishes right before my eyes; it was so impressive to see their work up close. During breakfast, sunlight streamed into the restaurant, creating an entirely different but equally blissful ambiance compared to dinner time. Both meals were absolutely delicious and left me deeply moved...! Every dish perfectly matched the concept of this accommodation. **Bookstore:** Originally a public bathhouse that has been renovated into this beautiful space—it’s stylish yet calming with its design elements being truly remarkable. There’s even a kids' area where bathtubs have been turned into ball pits or decorated with adorable handmade yokai dolls by staff members—a delightful space for children too...! At night, it transforms into "Honbako Bar," where you can enjoy drinks surrounded by bookshelves filled with books—a secret hideout-like private area where I had some fantastic yuzu sake with friends; it was such an enjoyable experience. Additionally: The shop offered many tasteful souvenirs while their bakery sold tempting bread and cookies aplenty—Matsumoto Jujo itself is just such an extraordinary place overall! Outside of this accommodation specifically stood out “Philosophy & Sweets,” located slightly uphill—a café whose location combined soft ambiance created by friendly staff made everything feel magical. This is truly my first time wanting so much to revisit an accommodation like this one again someday soon—thank you very much!

Accommodation for Book Lovers Who Want to Stay In

With the reliable Jujou brand, both the accommodation and rooms offered a sense of comfort, thoughtful interior design, and artful touches. Although the accommodation was slightly distant from the café at check-in, they kindly transported our luggage. I enjoyed a secluded stay by reading books in my private room, ordering whiskey, and moving between the balcony and open-air bath. The high ceilings and dim lighting in the room provided a sense of openness and relaxation. Meals were Western-style with an intriguing explanation of Shinshu's history behind the ingredients and dishes. Since I had a multiple night stay, the menu changed; personally, I preferred the second night's vegetable-focused dishes that highlighted fresh ingredients. The "Adult Bookshelf" mainly featured photo books with fewer engaging reads available; as such, it seemed less frequented by guests. On the other hand, "Children's Bookshelf," located in what used to be an old bath facility, was filled with nostalgic picture books that were quite enjoyable. There were various cozy spots for reading throughout where I immersed myself in books. While there were many Japanese-language books and meals centered on Shinshu vegetables—elements that might appeal less to international visitors—I did notice some inbound guests during my stay. There were also non-staying visitors using certain facilities. Perhaps due to this diversity of guests or purposes for visiting, there seemed to be more rules compared to other accommodations under Jujou’s series—such as entry regulations or restrictions on bringing books into rooms or amenities usage rules—which is understandable given such circumstances. With nearby competition like Hoshino Resorts present as well, it felt like they are still exploring their branding and target audience differentiation strategies. Overall though, as someone who loves books and quiet retreats indoors ("komori"), this was an enjoyable secluded accommodation experience. I would recommend this place more for those who appreciate quiet spaces filled with art or enjoy reading rather than those seeking lively conversations during their stay.

Thank you for your continued support.

This was my first stay at Matsumoto Jujo, and I enjoyed being surrounded by various books. However, I have a few suggestions for improvement: - During dinner at the counter, the lighting came from behind, making it hard to appreciate the appearance of the dishes. - The entrance door to the Room lacked a soft-close function, and noise and vibrations from neighboring doors were disruptive. - The air conditioning in the Room blew directly onto the bed, which was uncomfortable. - There was mold inside the coffee machine in the Room; fortunately, it was broken so I didn’t end up drinking unsafe coffee, but this was disappointing nonetheless. Despite these issues, I had an enjoyable stay and hope these points can be improved for future guests!

The Joy of Staying at a Bookstore

Stay at a bookstore! As a book lover, this concept was irresistible, and in the charming city of Matsumoto no less. My mother and I stayed for two nights and enjoyed an incredibly fulfilling experience beyond just the unique concept. The check-in process was delightful—starting at a nearby café where we enjoyed a welcome oyaki (delicious!) and coffee while completing check-in. Then, we were taken to the hilltop ryokan in an adorable tuk-tuk ride. Upon entering, the restaurant right by the entrance immediately set a non-ordinary tone! The room was so stunning that even my mother, who is over 77 years old, exclaimed with joy. The stylish space carried the soothing scent of onsen throughout. While guests are encouraged to bring their own amenities, all essentials were provided sufficiently. The room’s fridge was well-stocked with snacks and drip coffee options too! In the hallway, there were complimentary baked goods and ice cream available—a lovely touch. Although my mother isn’t as much of a book enthusiast as I am, she thoroughly enjoyed herself thanks to the chic interior design and practical books like photo collections or recipe guides that kept her engaged more than me! A mini-bar offering unlimited drinks before dinner added an extra layer of indulgence for adults—perfect for enjoying one drink before heading to dinner. Initially skeptical about some creative dishes served during dinner ("This might not be my taste..."), I found myself increasingly impressed as each course progressed—it turned out deliciously healthy! By the main dish course stage: "I could eat this three more times!" On our first night without much research beforehand regarding pairings—I opted for non-alcoholic pairings which turned out extraordinary combinations such as roasted eggplant skin syrup paired perfectly alongside meals leaving us amazed enough requesting repeats next day again! Our private bath within-room exceeded expectations while exclusive access granted towards cozy communal outdoor onsen named Koyanagi-no-Yu featuring slightly hotter water temperature felt equally rejuvenating too. One minor suggestion would include adding individual bedside reading lamps allowing uninterrupted late-night reading sessions without disturbing others sharing same space otherwise everything else remains exceptional overall here! Looking forward revisiting Matsumoto Jujo soon exploring affiliated properties further ahead likewise!!

    Creative Cuisine

Overall, the service was attentive and detailed. However, the creative cuisine felt overly elaborate and may not suit everyone's taste. Although we had informed in advance that one of our party members did not prefer game meat and requested a menu change, the same dish was served, leaving us unsure of what accommodations were made.

    The meals are not satisfactory.

The concept and interior design of the accommodation are worth staying for, but the meals are completely unpalatable. To put it simply, they taste bad. The seasoning is overly elaborate and results in unexpected flavors that increase a sense of dread with every bite. Having stayed at many accommodations, this is the first time I've encountered food this terrible. For an accommodation charging at this level, such meals need serious reconsideration. While I understand there’s a concept behind it, the approach to expressing it through taste is entirely misguided. Bitter, overly salty, mushy textures that can't be chewed without a knife—everything from texture to seasoning and combinations falls far below acceptable standards for guests. While staying here might be fine, I strongly recommend dining out for both breakfast and dinner.

    A paradise for book lovers

Stayed 2 nights in the Terrace Suite at Matsumoto Honbako. The library, called "Honbako," is spacious, and books are found throughout the restaurant and rooms. A blissful concept hotel for book lovers. Since there isn't much to see in Asama Onsen town, it's perfect for a retreat focused on reading. The hotel's garden at the entrance is very pleasant, with low temperatures and humidity in the mornings and evenings, making it a relaxing spot to linger. The room was spacious and overall comfortable, allowing us to enjoy a leisurely pace. On the other hand, as a luxury accommodation, the service by young staff and meals at the restaurant were below expectations. The cuisine focuses on healthy vegetable-based Japanese dishes or Italian grills but fell short considering the accommodation fee. Homemade bread served at breakfast was left uneaten both days. The room facilities are modern and sufficient, with proper cleaning maintained inside. Amenities cover basic needs adequately. However, minor issues include water stains visible on windows due to infrequent cleaning outside, causing them to appear cloudy. Additionally, neither handrails nor chairs were available in either the shower room or private open-air bath within the room—offering little reassurance for elderly guests. Despite some dissatisfaction points remaining unresolved, books make up for everything else here. For book enthusiasts especially, this place is worth visiting once. Moreover, a nearby affiliated café focusing on philosophy books offers a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere—a soothing space where one can spend time feeling relaxed and comforted by its charm.

    Completely satisfied

Compared to my worst experience at Kai Tsugaru (where the air conditioning didn't work, and I had to use a fan but kept waking up throughout the night and couldn't sleep well), this accommodation was incomparable. Every detail showed thoughtful hospitality, allowing me to enjoy an exceptional trip. The time spent in the library exceeded my expectations, providing a wonderfully relaxing reading experience. Additionally, the meals were creatively prepared, offering extraordinary dishes I had never tasted before. They were absolutely delicious and left me completely satisfied. This is undoubtedly my number one accommodation that I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    I stayed at this acc...

I stayed at this accommodation six months ago and had such a wonderful experience that I decided to stay again. Check-in at the café offering oyaki and coffee immediately set the tone with its nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere, creating a special and extraordinary feeling. The moment I stepped into the open-air bath in my room, both my mind and body felt completely relaxed. The room itself was, of course, amazing! The terrace, open-air bath, snacks, and coffee all made me so excited! Before dinner, enjoying a beer on the terrace while feeling the breeze was incredibly refreshing. Then came dinner—dishes that fully utilized local ingredients to their maximum potential. "Wait... are carrots and zucchini always this delicious?!" "The richness of carp is incredible!" "Venison is absolutely divine!" Every single dish was outstanding. Last time I didn’t try sake pairing with the meal, but this time I did—and it was an excellent choice! The selection of sake perfectly complemented each dish and enhanced their flavors even more. It was worth it; I’m beyond satisfied. After dinner, I discovered a favorite book in their library space. The staff were all attentive yet unobtrusive—polite and pleasant—which gave me great peace of mind throughout my stay. Even though it was just one night, my heart and body feel rejuvenated as if I've recharged for an entire year ahead. I'll work hard in daily life now but look forward to staying here again soon!

A serene space and delicious local ingredients, an accommodation you'll want to visit again.

I stayed at Matsumoto Jujo for the first time. The atmosphere of the room and the spaces within the accommodation were very calming, allowing me to spend a peaceful and relaxing time. Both dinner and breakfast featured carefully prepared dishes using local ingredients, all of which were delicious and beautifully presented. The vegetable dishes and use of fermentation were particularly impressive. The open-air bath in the room exceeded my expectations with its excellent water quality, leaving my skin smooth. Being able to soak leisurely without worrying about time felt truly luxurious. Next time, I would like to stay at "Matsumoto Honbako" as well. I've heard you can enjoy a bath while gazing at the Alps, so I'm looking forward to that too!

    Trip for Two

Traveled to Shinshu with a close friend from Kyushu. The mountain scenery was completely different from Kyushu, and I was deeply moved by the grandeur of the Northern Alps. The "Adult Book Box" in the Hotel had an excellent selection, but the "Children's Book Box" was also filled with nostalgic picture books that brought back memories, and I found myself engrossed in reading them. Every meal was delicious. Although I was a bit unsure about trying game meat, the venison tasted entirely different from anything I've had before—it's hard to describe but absolutely amazing. It seemed like no processed products were used; everything felt carefully prepared with seasoning that perfectly suited my taste. The staff members were mostly young but provided polite guidance, so there were no inconveniences at all. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay—thank you very much!

The quality may have slightly declined compared to previous stays, but the thoughtful touches suited to modern times can be felt everywhere, and it remains a comfortable accommodation. I had always wanted to try something like grilled rice balls made with firewood, so I was thrilled when gohei-mochi was served—it fulfilled my wish! It was a bit disappointing that the half-pairing of non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks is no longer available. I hope it will return someday. While enjoying the changes, this remains one of the accommodations I want to keep visiting in the future. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

    Meals are not included.

We stayed at Koyanagi with our child. While there were features like projection mapping and a picture book corner that children might enjoy, the food was truly disappointing. The curry from the children's buffet, which was supposed to be freely available, was overly sweet and heavy, so even our child couldn't eat it. The hamburger steak for kids was hard and seemed difficult to eat. For adults, there seemed to be an overwhelming focus on cheese—Parmesan toppings, risotto, cheesecake—it all felt too heavy and rich. The leek potage soup was thick and served in a large bowl; it would have been better as a small pre-meal portion in a glass. The two types of homemade bread served alongside were not tasty and didn’t pair well with the soup. A berry-flavored bread for dinner also felt out of place. The main dish of stewed pork consisted mostly of fatty chunks that were almost inedible—where exactly is the edible part? It felt excessively rich again. The grilled pork option seemed like leftovers? Vegetables included one boiled broccoli stick and mashed potatoes—nothing seasonal or thoughtful about it at all. We couldn’t help but feel disappointed as a family; this meal did not seem considerate towards diners at all. Breakfast wasn’t any better—it featured what appeared to be dry leftovers on a plate along with last night’s potage soup (only leeks replaced by onions). It tasted exactly the same as before! Both dinner and breakfast didn’t suit our tastes at all, leaving us hungry throughout our stay. The oyaki offered during check-in was the only delicious item we had during our visit. While we found the library area, Onsen facilities, and room comfortable enough to spend time in, unfortunately we wouldn’t want to return due to how disappointing the meals were—they ruined everything else about what could have been an enjoyable trip we had looked forward to so much. Truly unfortunate!

    We stayed at the acc...

We stayed at the accommodation in mid-May to celebrate my mother’s special occasion. The hotel’s concept and atmosphere were delightful, and soaking in the onsen during this pleasantly mild season was absolutely wonderful, making for a relaxing stay. The highlight was the dinner—a course meal featuring seasonal ingredients. We especially enjoyed dishes with fresh mountain vegetables, and this time, asparagus took center stage with an incredibly delicious dish. The main pork dish, slow-cooked over a wood fire right before our eyes, was tender and juicy. Each plate was beautifully presented, leaving us excited to see what would come next. The staff provided warm yet unobtrusive service, sharing stories behind the dishes that added to our enjoyment while we had meaningful conversations with my mother. It was a luxurious experience in an extraordinary setting with carefully crafted cuisine unique to this place—an accommodation we’d love to visit again each season!

It is unfortunate that there is no large public bath.

Located in an Onsen area, but unfortunately lacks a large bath and open-air bath. It seems the previous facility had a large bath, but it is no longer in use. While the meals show some attention to detail, the cooking seems misguided and cannot be described as delicious.

It was a nice place, but...

The meals were delicious, but I wished for more simple and traditional options. Especially for breakfast, it would have been nice to choose something like a typical tasty Japanese meal. The Room and library were fantastic. Although it was mentioned as 24-hour service both online and at the reception, the front desk informed me it was only open until 10 PM. I wonder which one was correct in the end. Next time, I’d like to stay for more than two nights, but since I'm assuming the library is open 24 hours, I should have confirmed this properly beforehand—regrettable!
