    We stayed with our 1...

    We stayed with our 1-year-old child. Our child had fallen asleep when we arrived, and the staff kindly handled check-in flexibly and guided us straight to the tuk-tuk without waking them, which was a big help. During meals, our child was shy at first, but the staff responded with warm smiles, which made us very happy as parents. We look forward to visiting again.

    For book lovers, this is a wonderful place where you can read anytime during your stay. When I mentioned that we were visiting for my mother’s birthday, you wrote a message on the dessert plate, and she was truly delighted—thank you very much. However, when we arrived at the check-in café and told you our name, there was no response or greeting. Also, since we had a Multiple Night Stay, communication about housekeeping was not handled smoothly, which was disappointing. Even my child said during our stay that the check-in experience was disappointing. I did a lot of research about the hotel before visiting, but I was surprised to see in the Room guide: “This is not a fully serviced luxury Ryokan.” I think your efforts toward regional revitalization and eco-friendly initiatives are wonderful. However, they may also make some guests feel pressured or uncomfortable.

    High-quality modern renovation

    We stayed here for a relaxing getaway as a couple. For book-loving couples like us, the spacious bookstore felt like heaven, and we ended up buying several books we picked up. The building has a contemporary feel, with a renovation that clearly distinguishes between areas that have been carefully refined and those intentionally left untouched—making it very comfortable for well-traveled guests like us. The interior is also modern and simple in a great way. The Onsen was slightly on the lukewarm side, so we could soak for a long time while enjoying the view. The day we stayed was beautifully clear, and the snow-capped mountains stretching out before us were absolutely breathtaking. The meals were thoughtfully prepared using mainly local ingredients, and we could sense genuine care in every single dish without any shortcuts. Overall, we had a truly wonderful time and were completely satisfied. If I had to mention one thing, because there is so much attention to detail throughout, it can feel like there’s quite a lot of information to take in. We found ourselves admiring one impressive feature after another—so much so that it almost felt a bit tiring from all the input by the end. One more point: since all of the staff are quite young, the atmosphere feels lively; however, with very few older staff members around, as a couple in our 50s we also felt slightly out of place at times. That may simply come down to personal preference, but overall this is an Accommodation I can confidently recommend to many people.

    A place to relax and unwind

    From start to finish, this place felt truly luxurious. The staff were polite and attentive, always ready to assist when needed. The Room was spacious with a dedicated reading area, perfect for getting lost in a book. The private open-air bath attached to the Room was absolutely amazing! With stunning views of the Alps and perfectly adjusted water temperature, it provided a wonderfully relaxing experience. While there were many positives, there were also some drawbacks. One issue was that the bookshelf area and restaurant space on the first floor felt chilly. Although blankets were provided, they weren’t enough for my friend who is sensitive to cold. Both dinner and breakfast seating near the front desk also felt uncomfortably cold. As for meals, I found them somewhat disjointed in concept; each dish seemed unrelated to the next. While I could sense an effort to highlight natural flavors of ingredients, it didn’t quite resonate with me. Overall though, this place has so much potential that these two points stood out as disappointing. I’d love to return when I’m older and appreciate it even more!

    A lovely Hotel for a relaxing stay

    A family trip with my daughter and son. I chose this accommodation because I wanted to visit Zenkoji Temple. Although it is a bit far from the temple, I decided to stay here as my daughter, who works at a publishing company, could join us. The meals were very delicious and left nothing to be desired. However, during breakfast, although there were no other guests sharing the table, we were seated at a large table which felt slightly uncomfortable. My daughter has expressed her desire to visit again, so I hope we can return in the future.

The flow of walking through the town from check-in to the accommodation was interesting and showed thoughtful creativity.     Everything except the meals was great.

    We stayed at Koyanagi for a multiple night stay with our children during the year-end holidays. The accommodation itself had a charming atmosphere, and the space where we could enjoy books and a ball pool was perfect for a family trip. The service was attentive, and the other guests were pleasant to interact with, making conversations enjoyable. We also used the outdoor bath; although there were no shampoos or similar amenities provided, its concept of simply warming up felt quite practical. However, there were some inconsistencies in service. Despite staying for multiple nights, we were questioned at reception as if we weren’t guests and even stopped near the elevator when trying to enter our room. At checkout, when pointing out an error in our restaurant bill, there was no apology—rather an unpleasant attitude from staff. What bothered us most was dinner at Alps Restaurant on the first day. While it’s great that they have a play area for kids so families can dine comfortably without worry, the food on that day was truly disappointing. The serving staff's professionalism stood out positively; however, it seemed like an issue with menu planning itself rather than execution. Even without using expensive ingredients or complex preparation methods beyond reheating pre-made dishes, surely more flavorful options could be offered? The gap between how wonderful both facilities and staff are versus this aspect of dining left us feeling dissatisfied enough to express our concerns directly. Honestly speaking—if alternatives had been available nearby—we might’ve opted instead for dining outside at local izakayas during that evening meal experience! That said though: after raising feedback about Day 1’s dinner quality via phone call later into Day 2—they kindly explained details regarding upcoming menus while reassuring efforts toward meeting expectations better moving forward—and indeed delivered delicious meals thereafter which exceeded prior impressions significantly!     We had a relaxing New Year's holiday with the whole family at the best accommodation.

    We stayed as a family of four from the end of the year to the beginning of the new year. The area around Matsumoto Jujo is located near Asama Onsen town. It is a very quiet and charming region, perfect for a relaxing stay. Matsumoto Jujo, where we stayed this time, offered incredibly delicious cuisine. We were thoroughly impressed with the chef's dedication, flavors, presentation, and tableware—everything was perfect. The staff provided excellent service with warm smiles and great attentiveness; everyone seemed to enjoy their work wholeheartedly. During our stay, we drew fortunes at the front desk and purchased recommended books for each family member based on those fortunes. Just a short walk from the hotel brought us to LDK bakery—a place I used to visit almost weekly when living in Hiyoshi years ago. It was wonderful to reconnect with the manager there and reminisce about old times; such serendipitous moments add spice to any journey. This time we traveled by train instead of driving for a more leisurely experience. On our final day, it snowed beautifully, allowing us to fully appreciate Matsumoto's charm in winter. Matsumoto Castle covered in snow was truly breathtaking. This was an accommodation we would love to visit again someday. Thank you very much!

    A unique accommodation experience combining a stay at a Ryokan with the joy of discovering books. Used on the way back from New Year's holidays. Perfect for book lovers, as you can enjoy reading books leisurely during your trip and even purchase them. The selection of books was excellent. The Onsen, designed in a communal bath style reflecting local bathing culture, provided a simple yet culturally enriching experience. As we were traveling with children, the dining area included an adjacent play space where kids could stay entertained while parents enjoyed their meals at ease. The space was exclusively for families with children, allowing us to relax without worry. The fully renovated rooms featured modern designs and were very comfortable. Highlights: - Thoughtful dining areas and book spaces catering to families with children. We bought many books to take home! - Unlimited access to ice cream and refrigerator snacks delighted the kids. - Efforts to revitalize the entire Onsen town through exploration opportunities. - Delicious homemade bread and well-curated souvenirs at Koyanagi Entrance shop. Concerns: - The room felt dry during winter; the humidifying function of the air purifier seemed insufficient for its size. - Noise from an outdoor air conditioning unit disturbed us at night due to room placement. - Although our room had a balcony, its structure allowed easy visibility into neighboring rooms without any cautionary notices provided. - While experiencing local Onsen culture in communal baths was enjoyable, having proper open-air baths or large public baths might enhance overall satisfaction further.

    Stayed for one night with family during New Year's. The attentive service from check-in to check-out in the separate building was pleasant. The all-Japanese staff felt refreshingly unique. The meals were carefully prepared, showcasing attention to detail, and we were satisfied with both quality and quantity. For a book lover like me, Matsumoto Honbako felt like a sacred place. However, despite this amazing space, I couldn't relax or feel at ease. While I understand that the facility was designed by a renowned architect, the layout and functionality are inconvenient. With no changing area available, I had to undress under freezing skies before entering the open-air bath—was it correct to shower first in the booth, put on a gown, then head outside? It left me wondering where exactly one is supposed to change clothes. Additionally: - The shampoo bottles have text too small to read without glasses amidst steam; mistaking body soap for shampoo left my hair feeling rough before realizing my error. - My wife complained about dim lighting making it difficult for makeup application. Perhaps this accommodation is better suited for couples seeking an extraordinary and sophisticated experience rather than families looking for casual bonding time. Having stayed at many accommodations with private open-air baths before now—including our previous visits here pre-renovation—I realize my expectations may have been misplaced. While bold designs often come with compromises appreciated by some guests seeking novelty or modernity... what I truly desire remains simple: relaxation through good food shared among loved ones within cozy surroundings reminiscent of past traditions—something we cherished during earlier stays here as our go-to New Year retreat spot pre-renovation era!

    This is my third stay here. The meals, made with local ingredients, are incredibly delicious, and dining while watching the campfire is very relaxing. There are great bakeries and deli shops nearby, and I always stock up on their offerings. It would be even better if the shared bath facilities were further enhanced.

    It was a one-night stay, but I truly enjoyed a relaxing time. Based on the information I researched beforehand, I imagined it to be a slightly high-end hotel. However, from check-in to dinner and finally check-out, the staff's hospitality and the facility's flexibility made me feel that they respected my pace throughout my stay. The course meal, incorporating and harmonizing ingredients from Shinshu, was a form of entertainment in itself—each dish offering flavors unique to this place. Personally, the combination of warm soy milk and sake lees soup with prosciutto paired excellently with the recommended drink; it was exceptional. In terms of harmony, even details like exposed concrete walls in the room or bookstore showing construction marks or handwritten numbers added a certain charm to the atmosphere. When I requested wine glasses for wine I brought along—a somewhat selfish request—it was promptly accommodated without hesitation. My only minor wish would have been for facial cleanser availability. I went in and out of the bath at least five times during my stay! It was an incredibly satisfying accommodation experience. Thank you very much!

    The stay was incredibly fulfilling with various services such as the oyaki received at check-in, drinks during happy hour, free ice cream and snacks, and the private open-air bath in the guest room—one night simply wasn’t enough. There were also many books available within the accommodation, but I couldn’t find time to read them this time. If I have a chance to stay again, I’d like to book two nights and enjoy some leisurely reading. The most memorable part of this visit was dinner at Dining 367. It featured game meat dishes that I hadn’t tried much before, but they were so delicious without any of the strong flavors or smells often associated with game meat—it was hard to tell it was even game unless told so! Other dishes included beautifully plated seasonal vegetables from Shinshu, local chicken, and fermented ingredients—all of which were not only delicious but also made me feel healthier both physically and mentally. We also opted for full pairing options that allowed us to enjoy both wine and sake; each drink paired perfectly with its respective dish. Breakfast featured plenty of vegetables in every dish as well. The soup, salad dressing, homemade bread, and miso granola were especially delightful! Thanks to all the staff’s hospitality during our stay at this accommodation, it became a truly unforgettable experience. Thank you very much!

    It may be a bit on the spicy side.

    The room and the bath were very satisfying. I appreciated that there was no TV in the room. We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was clean and had an amazing open-air bath attached to the room. Being able to access the open-air bath directly from the shower room was convenient, and having unlimited ice cream and juice was fantastic. As someone who enjoys reading, I truly appreciated the large selection of novels available. However, the food was truly disappointing. There wasn’t any standout main dish, and most of it wasn’t enjoyable; we ended up leaving much of it uneaten halfway through. The live kitchen setup and atmosphere of the dining area were nice, but I couldn’t help wondering if there were any proper chefs present. Neither seafood nor meat dishes stood out or caught our attention. The room, bath, and staff service were all excellent, making me want to return again; however, with such disappointing food quality, I don’t think we would repeat our stay. My husband and I paid approximately 90,000 yen for our stay but felt that for 90,000 yen we could find better accommodations elsewhere. As frequent travelers throughout the year with high standards for reviews like this one—this is my honest opinion based on our experience.

    Everything is perfect, a blissful stay.

    From the delightful tea and oyaki service at check-in to the unique space with warm touches despite its minimalist concrete walls, and the courteous, friendly staff who provided exceptional service, our stay was truly memorable. The seamless arrangements for transportation between the station and Hotel, as well as accommodating special dinner requests with a smile, made everything smooth even for our large group. Personally, one night was not enough. Next time, I would love to stay for at least two nights either alone or in a small group. While Koyanagi is intriguing, spending time immersed in reading at Honbako or relaxing in the Room's private bath feels like pure bliss. Above all else, every meal prepared with abundant local ingredients was absolutely delicious. The restaurant's ambiance—with crackling firewood sounds, its aroma, high ceilings, and beautiful interior—stimulated all senses and made this an unforgettable experience. Thank you very much!

    A perfect service for book and coffee lovers.

    I had been curious about this Hotel for a long time, and it was easy to reach from Matsumoto Station by bus. The welcome drink of champagne and the chewy oyaki instantly lifted my spirits. The staff's gentle expressions and beautiful way of speaking left a strong impression on me. The Room was spacious with a large sofa, making it very relaxing. The coffee and snacks provided were exceptionally delicious, and I was thrilled to enjoy two types of coffee—Nespresso and drip coffee. On top of that, they even gifted me a tumbler to use with the professional-grade coffee machine near the front desk, which made me feel they truly understand coffee lovers like myself. Water and hot water were available from the hallway water server, and the hot water bottle I borrowed was fantastic. The bathtub in the Room had slightly lukewarm water, allowing for a long soak that was very soothing. The meals were perfectly portioned so that I felt just full after dessert without feeling thirsty later due to excessive saltiness. After dinner, I could visit their bookstore again—a perfect spot for book lovers like me! I discovered wonderful books that are hard to come across normally and bought many as souvenirs from my trip.     Autumn Solo Trip

    At the end of November, although the mountain foliage had ended, the maple trees in the garden were beautifully red. The newly renovated book area near the large public bath was stunning. I made a reservation hoping to relax and read books, but one night was not enough at all for reading. Next time, I plan to have a multiple night stay. It seems that all books are available for purchase, so I decided to buy and take home some that caught my interest. The meals were thoughtfully prepared with each dish telling an intriguing story, making it enjoyable. The cider brewed in the neighboring storehouse was also delicious. A foreign guest I met in the bath mentioned how they appreciated experiencing everyday life in town rather than typical tourist spots—it made me realize this hotel offers such unique sensibilities. The staff maintained just the right level of attentiveness and helped create a wonderful experience for me. Thank you very much!

    As a repeat user who has trusted the reviews and guidance of IKYU.com many times, I feel compelled to post this due to how terrible the experience was this time. The meals were so shockingly bad that it’s beyond discussing whether they were worth the accommodation fee or not. Additionally, the private bath attached to the room and the open-air bath were unbearably cold and simply awful. The claims about upholding traditional values of a historic Onsen Ryokan are laughable at best. While one star is the minimum rating available, in reality, this accommodation doesn’t even deserve one star out of five in an overall evaluation.

    We created wonderful memories with our children.

    We stayed here for the first time as a family of three. Upon check-in, we were served oyaki and drinks in a cozy café with a wonderful atmosphere. The presence of sofas allowed us to relax comfortably. The oyaki was so delicious that even our child enjoyed it thoroughly. Afterward, we were taken to our destination via Tuk-Tuk Shuttle Service, which delighted our daughter as she felt like it was an attraction ride! Having ridden one before during a trip to Thailand, both my daughter and I were thrilled since it's rare in Japan—it was such an enjoyable experience! During our stay, my first-grade daughter loved the children's book corner and spent many fun hours there! She used it multiple times before dinner and breakfast. It offered books not typically picked up at home, making for meaningful moments. There’s even a private-like space where you can enjoy quiet time reading—perfect for book lovers or even those who don’t usually read much. The children’s area also had picture books and a ball pool where my daughter played happily while picking out her favorite books to read enthusiastically from the wide selection available—it truly made for delightful memories. As for dining, trying game meat like carp and venison was new but incredibly delicious—a unique experience indeed! Nearby firewood added an impressive touch that felt exclusive to Matsumoto Jujo's ambiance. My child loved her kids' plate so much that she ate more than usual! Breakfast was equally delightful; the bread stood out particularly—we ended up buying some from the shop on our way back. The room exceeded expectations with its cleanliness and comfort—it made for an exceptional stay overall. The highlight was undoubtedly the private open-air Onsen bath attached to our room; being able to soak anytime we wanted during autumn made it all the more relaxing—we used it several times throughout our stay! Our daughter especially enjoyed having free ice cream available in the hallway—she went back several times for seconds! With so many kid-friendly features around, she never got bored during our visit. Lastly, all staff members provided outstanding hospitality that left us with wonderful memories—thank you very much!

    Accommodation enjoyable for both children and adults

    We stayed at this accommodation as a family of four, including two children. At the check-in café "Oyaki and Coffee," the kids were initially unsure about trying oyaki for the first time. However, after one bite, they loved it so much that it turned into a competition for the last piece! It was absolutely delicious. The children were thrilled with the tuk-tuk shuttle service. Their eyes sparkled as we enjoyed views of Asama Onsen on our way to "Matsumoto Jujo Koyanagi." Upon arrival, we found our spacious and clean room with an open-air bath, which made the kids incredibly excited! For dinner, we dined at the wood-fired grill restaurant "367." The theme of "Local Gastronomy" was beautifully presented through dishes that reflected local culture and history. The staff kindly explained each dish in detail. The meal was visually stunning, delicious, and offered a unique atmosphere that made for an enjoyable dining experience. After dinner, we visited the children's book area. At the end of what felt like a maze of bookshelves was a ball pit where our kids had so much fun! Watching their sparkling eyes filled us with happiness. Although it was just a one-night stay, we managed to enjoy four baths together as a family in our relaxing room. It allowed us to unwind completely in comfort and tranquility. The staff at Matsumoto Jujo were all very friendly and accommodating. Thanks to their warm hospitality, even traveling with children felt easy and enjoyable. We are truly grateful for such an amazing experience. On our way home by car, we reminisced about all the wonderful memories from Matsumoto Jujo together as a family—making even our three-hour journey back fly by quickly. Next time, we'd love to return with my parents too!

    The First Matsumoto Jujo

    Excited to visit Matsumoto Castle, we spent half a day in Matsumoto here. The room was simple and efficient, with no TV, offering a quiet space perfect for conversations. The bookshelf was the highlight; I browsed through it several times and found books I enjoyed. Dinner by the warmth of the wood-fired oven was delightful, with one delicious dish after another leaving us impressed. What stood out most was that the staff left at 10 PM—a unique feature for such a facility. If I have another chance to visit Matsumoto, I would definitely return here. Thank you very much!

    Exceptional hospitality and meals crafted with the finest ingredients

    I have stayed at many accommodations during my travels, but I had a wonderful time here with the best hospitality. The staff were confident, kind, and attentive in their service. The meals were not overly seasoned but were carefully prepared, which left me deeply impressed. There are many high-priced and excellent accommodations out there. For me, Matsumoto Jujo is not an inexpensive place where I can stay multiple times, but it is an accommodation that offers satisfaction beyond its cost. I was also amazed by the large collection of books. This is an accommodation where I would love to enjoy a multiple night stay and relax. Thank you!

    Travel with Friends

    I had always wanted to stay at Matsumoto Jujo, and I was excited to have the opportunity to visit with my friends this time! The Room on the 7th floor of Koyanagi was spacious and comfortable! Everyone enjoyed a long soak in the open-air bath! Exploring the bookshelf was also a lot of fun! The meals were absolutely delicious!

    Visit in October 2025

    I previously visited with a friend and was very impressed by the meals featuring fresh vegetables, the relaxing Onsen, and the clean Facility, so this time I decided to visit with my family. As before, we were very satisfied with the meals, Onsen, and Facility. However, during our stay in Room 601 this time, there was a loud motor noise coming periodically from a machine on the balcony. Both my daughter and I are light sleepers and woke up multiple times because of it. For this reason, I have rated the room and Facility three stars. It would have been better if there had been some confirmation about sensitivity to noise or recommendations for other rooms in such cases. Next time, I would like to stay in a different room (avoiding rooms where noise might also be an issue).

    We stayed at a hotel...

    We stayed at a hotel we had been curious about for a while, based on reviews, with our family. We were looking forward to the meals, but unfortunately, they were disappointing. The carp sashimi and carp soup had a muddy taste that we couldn't handle. The main dish of pork was tender and the sauce was delicious, but overall the dishes did not pair well with wine at all. However, breakfast was delicious. There seemed to be many young staff members, but everyone was very pleasant and provided comfortable service. Staying inside a bookshelf as part of the accommodation experience was an exciting new concept for us. The complimentary cappuccino was very tasty as well. It’s a hotel we’d like to revisit; however, it would be great if there were options to select whether or not meals are included in the stay package.

It was impeccable. However, there was one issue: the dining time options were limited, and dinner ended past 10 PM. It would be appreciated if you could reconsider the intervals and end time for meal service.

    Accommodation where you can enjoy a relaxing time

    This was my first stay, and the hotel, a renovated historical ryokan, is very stylish yet evokes a sense of nostalgia. I stayed in the Matsumoto Bookshelf room, which features an intriguing library space that feels like a secret hideout. It’s designed to let you enjoy reading at your own pace, and I found it truly inspiring. The food was delicious, and the staff provided excellent service. It has become an accommodation I would love to stay at again.

    Digital Detox

    I stayed at the hotel with my mother for a theater visit in Matsumoto City, a place I had been curious about after seeing it in a manga. The accommodation was filled with books, even in the room. Although I couldn't finish reading any of them, I enjoyed picking up interesting titles and spent a digital detox holiday away from my smartphone. The walking tour was also very enjoyable, especially learning about the communal baths. Staying at Matsumoto Honbako was wonderful, and the open-air bath was amazing. However, the room's stylish design lacked partitions like those in changing areas, which might feel awkward unless you're very close to your companion or staying alone. The meals were carefully prepared and delicious. However, some flavors were too unique for my elderly mother’s taste. While it may not be affordable for frequent visits due to its price range, I would love to stay at this accommodation again.
