It began as an Accommodation I hoped to stay at at least once in my life; before I knew it, this was my 11th visit. A superb culinary Ryokan I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who truly loves Kyoto.

I visited Mr. Yoshikawa and enjoyed tempura. I had been there in winter and spring before, so the koi in the garden were resting, but this time they were swimming energetically and looked beautiful. The tempura was excellent—not only rare ingredients to have as tempura such as tilefish (matsukasa-age) and grouper, but also familiar vegetables like okra and eggplant, which were perfectly crisp on the outside yet meltingly tender inside. I heard that changes are coming to Tomikoji as well, but I hope both the Accommodation and the cuisine will be preserved for generations to come.
