    It was a cozy and relaxing Accommodation.

    For my first trip of the new year, I finally visited Kusatsu Onsen, which I’d been wanting to go to. Since I love Onsen, I was looking for a Room with both a large public bath and an open-air bath in the guest room. The atmosphere was calm, and I was able to relax right up until check-out. As it was a snowy day, the Shuttle Service to the station was greatly appreciated. The meals were so filling that we hardly did any food tasting the next day. The Onsen offered various types that could be enjoyed at different times, and the in-room bath was spacious and very clean. It’s also close to Yubatake, and it’s an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

    It was my first time...

    It was my first time in Kusatsu Onsen, and I was satisfied with everything—the Onsen, the meals, the Room, and the service. In particular, all of the staff were kind, and I had a very comfortable stay.

    It was wonderful.

    This was my first time in Kusatsu, and it turned into a truly enjoyable stay. I was a bit worried about causing trouble as I was traveling with my elementary-school-aged son, but all of the staff were kind and welcoming, so we felt very comfortable throughout our visit. The bath in our Room was at just the right temperature, and we were able to relax while enjoying the mountain view. Everything was spotless down to every detail, and you could really feel the care put into the furnishings and Facility. There were none of the disappointing issues you sometimes notice even at long-established or newly renovated Ryokan. The Onsen baths were also extremely clean everywhere, and I loved how the setting made good use of the original old fittings—it had a wonderful atmosphere. It was clean throughout and very pleasant to bathe in. One small thing I noticed was that the bright green anti-slip artificial turf in the bathing area felt a bit strong visually. Since brown artificial turf is available these days as well, using that might make the space feel even more refined. The artworks and paintings displayed around the property were all beautiful and tasteful. I was especially impressed that all of the flowers were fresh flowers, carefully arranged—truly wonderful. Artificial flowers or fake greenery often take away from an experience for me, so this really stood out. The Shuttle Service to places like the ski resort and bus stop was also handled with great attention and flexibility, which helped us a lot. I felt dinner portions might be on the generous side, but everything was delicious so we ended up eating it all. We were very satisfied. The location made sightseeing and walking around town easy, yet it still felt calm and removed from any bustle—perfect for a relaxing stay. The slopes were a bit steep, but they worked well as some post-meal exercise (laugh). If I had to mention anything: The private dining room prepared for dinner was quiet and relaxing, but it felt slightly dim under cool fluorescent lighting; warmer lighting might have been nicer. It also felt almost too silent for my taste—I would have enjoyed some background music as well. The private room prepared for breakfast was excellent, so having dinner there might have been even more comfortable. That said, this is simply personal preference—a luxurious complaint. Overall it was an extremely satisfying stay. The Room felt too spacious for just two people, so next time I would love to bring my parents as well. Thank you very much. (The cat was absolutely adorable!)

    ONE AND ONLY

    Short-staffed?

    Late-night snacks were served in the Room, but each course only arrived after we finished the previous one—and the wait was extremely long. I assumed they might be short-staffed, so I tried to be understanding. However, breakfast was the real issue. We received a call 15 minutes beforehand saying, “Your meal is ready,” but when we arrived, the hot pot flame had already been turned off. That’s unacceptable—if you don’t light it after guests are seated, it gets cold. Whether it was to rush service or simply a mistake, it wasn’t acceptable.

    There was no advance notice.

    The Onsen and the Room were wonderful. However, in past Reservations I received a confirmation email from the Accommodation about a week in advance to confirm my expected arrival time, but this time I received nothing and was worried whether my Reservation had gone through. At the very least, I would have appreciated a direct message from the Accommodation acknowledging that they had received my Reservation.

    First visit in 17 years! The bath was amazing!

    The other day, I stayed here for the first time in 17 years! Once again, I was impressed—Kusatsu’s hot spring water is simply amazing! The large public bath was great, but above all, the bath in the Room was outstanding—I used it five times (lol)! Another highlight was how kind and courteous many of the Accommodation’s female staff were. We had a baby with us, and they helped soothe our baby and gladly checked various things for us. They were truly thoughtful, and we really appreciated it!! The meals were also as delicious as ever. The portions were smaller than 17 years ago, but honestly there was still more than enough variety (back then there was so much we couldn’t finish). Overall we were very satisfied, but there were a few disappointing points. First, regarding cleaning: There were several hairs on the floor in the Room. Since we had a baby with us, we always check the floor first when traveling, and we found about six hairs. Also a minor point: an empty cola can had been left outside, and it was clearly visible from the Room’s bath area, which was disappointing. It may be an easy-to-miss spot, but I would have been happy if it had been noticed. Also, perhaps because Kusatsu’s hot spring water isn’t ideal for babies and there aren’t many guests with infants overall, it felt like the staff weren’t very accustomed to families with babies. They responded willingly to everything we asked for so I have no complaints in that regard; however, it may not be suitable for those seeking special accommodations. That said, overall we are very satisfied! In particular, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the female staff member who took care of our Room. Thank you very much!

    Completely satisfied.

    We thoroughly enjoyed the three different baths. It was our first time experiencing the Nishinokawara hot spring (Nishino-yu and Yuzan-no-yu), and the water quality was excellent. Yuzan-no-yu also features water from the Bandai-ko source, making it fun to compare the two types of hot springs. Additionally, we were very satisfied with both the service and meals (dinner/breakfast) and would love to visit again if given the chance.

    Would love to use it again for a special occasion.

    We stayed here to celebrate his birthday. After check-in, we were warmly guided through each floor to our Room, and they even brought us hot tea, making for a very heartwarming start. During the in-room dining, they brought out a birthday cake while singing at the end of the meal. Thanks to the humorous staff member, it turned into a wonderful surprise. Additionally, as a kind gesture from the Ryokan, we received an Arita porcelain gift. It truly felt like a thoughtful and exceptional Ryokan experience.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    I stayed with my father and had a wonderful experience. This was our second visit. The head hostess and the hostess were incredibly kind, and we were delighted to be seen off by them when leaving. Their heartfelt hospitality truly shines through in everything they do. The Ryokan's cuisine, room, and Onsen were all top-notch. We will definitely visit again! Thank you very much!

    The room was clean and the amenities were well-equipped. Even during the busy New Year period, the staff were all polite and very pleasant. I was traveling with my elderly father, so it would have been even better if we could have had a more leisurely dining experience, but the meals were delicious and satisfying. I would love to stay again if I have the chance.

    I was disappointed despite the high reviews.

    We stayed at the accommodation with our family during the year-end holidays. The room was newly renovated and very clean, and the onsen was truly wonderful, allowing us to relax and unwind. However, there were a few disappointing points. Perhaps due to the New Year crowd, the tempura and fish served at dinner were slightly lukewarm, giving the impression that they had been prepared some time earlier. What concerned me most was breakfast. While my son was still eating, my mother and I were waiting when we felt rushed with comments like "There are others waiting..." It hadn't even been an hour yet... If guests are expected to finish within about an hour, it would have been better if this had been communicated in advance so we could respond more comfortably. Since we came here to enjoy a break from everyday life, having to watch the clock while eating felt a bit disappointing. Overall, I found the quality of meals to be "average." Given how excellent both the room and onsen were, improving meal service and hospitality would make this accommodation even more wonderful. The staff at reception as well as other team members provided polite service that gave us peace of mind—a very positive impression overall!

    It was an accommodation that makes you want to visit again.

    It was my first visit to Kusatsu Onsen. I couldn't find the location of the ryokan, but when I called, they provided clear directions, which was very helpful. The facility was clean, and the Christmas decorations were elegant and so charming that I couldn't resist taking photos. The fresh flowers in the hallway also left a positive impression. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, satisfying, and plentiful. With its reasonable price for the location, facility, service, and meals, this is a ryokan I would recommend to others. It became a wonderful memory for me. Thank you for such a lovely time!

    This was our second ...

    This was our second stay. Last time was during Golden Week, but this time we enjoyed the snowy scenery. The room was a Japanese-Western style with a private onsen family bath, which was very comfortable. However, we were disappointed that the temperature of the family bath felt lukewarm for us. When we contacted the front desk to request an increase in temperature, we couldn't get through and ended up not using it. Regarding meals, there were no fried dishes; instead, grilled items and soup were pre-prepared, which felt lacking for a kaiseki-style meal. The baths had excellent water quality as expected from Kusatsu Onsen. The facility itself was also comfortable and conveniently located near Yubatake. It’s a great accommodation overall, and I think we'll visit again next time!

    We had a wonderful celebration for the 88th birthday.

    We chose to stay at Bouun after searching for an accommodation that is senior-friendly. The facility has almost no stairs, making it easy to move around with a cane, so my elderly parents had no issues. This time, we stayed in a room with a private indoor bath. The quality of the onsen water was excellent as expected, and the bath was equipped with handrails. Additionally, the floor of the washing area and the bathtub were at the same height, allowing my father with a bent back to enjoy the onsen twice during our stay. The bathtub was spacious enough for two adults to bathe comfortably; I even joined my father and helped wash his back, which allowed me to show him some filial piety. During dinner, they kindly prepared celebratory attire for my father's 88th birthday (beiju) and took commemorative photos for us as well—truly exceptional service all around. Thank you very much!

    For Father's Retirement Celebration!

    Thank you very much for the warm and attentive service the other day. We chose this Ryokan as it was highly recommended by my father's colleagues for his retirement celebration, saying, "It's such a wonderful Ryokan!" The Room, meals, and Facility were all fantastic, and most importantly, my father was delighted. I feel grateful to have been able to make such a meaningful gesture for him. This has become a Ryokan I would love to recommend to my friends as well.

    The room, onsen, and meals (both dinner and breakfast) were absolutely satisfying! It was a great accommodation except that it might be difficult to use for those with mobility issues as it is not barrier-free.

    Heating available.

    The hospitality was excellent, but we were unaware of the Facility details. We are sensitive to the smell of kerosene heaters, and it was unpleasant outside the Room. The meals were plentiful, and we were treated kindly.

    First Visit to Kusatsu Onsen

    It was my first time visiting Kusatsu Onsen. The view from the room was great, and Yubatake was just a 5-minute walk away. The room was clean, the dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the bath had two hot spring sources, which exceeded my expectations. I was reminded that this is truly one of Japan's top Onsen destinations. This time I stayed for one night, so it felt a bit rushed, but next time I’d like to stay for two nights or more to fully enjoy the Onsen experience.

    The quality of the Onsen is good, but the balance with the price is slightly delicate.

    We chose to stay with a guest room onsen plan due to the high review ratings. Having stayed at various accommodations ranging from casual stays under 10,000 yen to luxury ryokans in the 100,000 yen range, overall, this experience felt "average" and lacked a sense of exclusivity for the price. The guest room was clean and comfortable but left no special impression in terms of facilities or ambiance; it felt ordinary considering the price range. Additionally, we were surprised when informed that yukata were available but came with an additional charge. It is unusual for a ryokan in this price range to charge for yukata, which was somewhat disappointing. The natural flowing onsen was excellent in quality, and both the private onsen and public bath provided high satisfaction regarding the water itself. However, amenities and supplies in the changing area were rather basic given the cost and lacked a sense of luxury. Meals included many dishes prepared with care; however, their taste, ingredients, and presentation left us feeling that they could have been better for this price point. There are many ryokans offering more satisfying meals at similar or even lower prices. Overall, while the onsen was outstanding, we found that as an accommodation experience as a whole it fell short of justifying its cost balance-wise. It may be ideal for those prioritizing hot springs but might feel overpriced for those seeking overall satisfaction.

    I would like to stay again.

    It was a wonderful accommodation. We stayed here for an anniversary trip. We arrived before the 2 PM check-in time and requested to park our car, which was kindly approved, allowing us to leisurely explore Kusatsu. Check-in was smooth, and we headed to our room. The room was excellent, clean, and provided a relaxing atmosphere. Dinner was served in a private room, so we could enjoy our meal without worrying about others around us. Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented—truly satisfying! The large public baths are available in three locations with alternating schedules for men and women between morning and evening. Both the changing rooms and baths were clean and very relaxing. Breakfast felt slightly lacking; it would have been nice if there were more side dishes to accompany the rice. At checkout, we were kindly told that we could leave our car parked until around noon while sightseeing, which allowed us to enjoy more of the area at ease. It’s such a beautiful place where you can relax completely—I’d love to stay here again!

    Located just a short walk from Yubatake, the convenience is unbeatable. The Onsen experience is, of course, excellent, but above all, the food was incredibly delicious and truly satisfying! Breakfast featured an array of small dishes that showcased attention to detail in every bite. The staff's service was outstanding, even offering to keep our car until noon the next day—a thoughtful gesture. We would love to visit again!

    A beautiful Japanese-style Hotel.

    Beautiful Japanese-style Hotel. Enjoy two types of hot spring baths, including an open-air bath. Meals are traditional Japanese cuisine served in private dining rooms, providing a calm and relaxing experience. The staff were kind and attentive. Complimentary coffee is available in the lobby, which was a nice touch. The location is excellent, just a short walk to the Yubatake hot spring area. Even after check-out, you can leave your car until noon, making it convenient for shopping for souvenirs at Yubatake. It was a perfect trip!

    Onsen is the best!

    There are two types of natural hot springs, both offering excellent Onsen experiences. I enjoyed delicious coffee in the lounge while relaxing and reading a book. The meals were outstanding in both quantity and quality, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Its proximity to the Yubatake allowed for an enjoyable evening stroll. I would love to visit this accommodation again.

    It was a wonderful accommodation!

    Thank you for taking care of my father and me during our stay. The meals were very delicious, and we were able to relax thoroughly. The Room was clean, quiet, and had a very calming fragrance. Although it is a traditional Ryokan, it felt neither old-fashioned nor outdated; instead, there was a sense of modernity and elegance throughout. The staff's hospitality was exceptional in every way. Special thanks to the Okami (head hostess) and the person in charge of serving meals in our Room for their attentive care. Above all, I deeply appreciated the kind consideration shown towards my elderly father—it truly touched my heart. Despite being busy, everyone took the time to stop with a smile and assist us; I am filled with gratitude for this kindness. I will definitely visit again!
