    Outstanding hospitality

This Accommodation collected our shoes at the entrance. Since it was raining, my sneakers were wet, but when I put them on at checkout the next morning, they were warm and had been dried for me! I was truly impressed—this was the first time I’ve experienced such thoughtful care. Inside the building, the floors were beautifully polished, and the fresh flower arrangements were lovely. The Onsen, meals, and Room were all wonderful. When I visit Kusatsu again, I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much.

    It was a wonderful Ryokan.

The staff greeted us properly, and we were able to spend our time comfortably. They were friendly and approachable with a casual atmosphere, but there were a few moments when their manners and etiquette stood out to us. Some of the dishes felt quite salty, and the hamo was not fully deboned. Even so, the Onsen was excellent, and we could truly feel the spirit of this Ryokan that has been carefully preserved over many years, making for a pleasant stay. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

It was very clean and comfortable.

The entire property was spotlessly clean, which made our stay very comfortable. All the staff were polite and pleasant. Both the first-floor lounge and the third-floor common room had a relaxing atmosphere, so we could unwind not only in our Room but also in other areas. The tasteful floral arrangements that weren’t too showy were also a lovely touch.

The Room is wonderful, and the Onsen is comfortable, but regarding the service and meals.

It was conveniently located close to Yubatake. Both the Room and the private bath were spacious, and we were able to stay comfortably. Overall, I was very satisfied with the Facility. On the other hand, there were a few service points that concerned me: 1) When we were shown to our Room after check-in, I asked for a futon for my son to be laid out during dinner, but it still hadn’t been prepared when we returned after the meal. So I had to ask the front desk again before going out to see the illuminated Yubatake. (Perhaps a staff member noticed the chilled cup noodles I had left at the counter; when we came back, they had kindly placed a bottle of cold water on the table, which I appreciated.) 2) The private dining room for dinner felt somewhat dated. The lighting was a bit dim, and the air conditioning didn’t seem sufficient—I hope it can be made more comfortable. The food was average. 3) After checkout, while carrying our luggage from the entrance to our car, an international staff member just stood nearby watching and did not help at all. I was surprised. Because both the Room and Onsen were excellent, I think this Accommodation would be even more appealing if dining and service could be further improved.

An Accommodation for a Comfortable Stay

We stayed as a couple for our wedding anniversary. The Room was clean, spacious, well maintained, very quiet, and made for a comfortable stay. It was also close to Yubatake, so we took an after-dinner walk and enjoyed the illuminations. The meals were delicious, with a wide variety of dishes both dinner and breakfast, and we truly felt the heartfelt hospitality. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

    The Onsen was very n...

The Onsen was very nice, and the place felt clean, so we enjoyed that, but it was disappointing that the meals were extremely poor. The sashimi at dinner did not seem fresh, and the hassun looked dried out as if it had been plated long before; nothing felt fresh at all. The grilled cutlassfish served midway also had a strong fishy smell, and the vegetables steamed with it were dried out and not even warm. From start to finish, the meal was not something we could enjoy. Because this damages the image of the Accommodation despite its strengths, I wish more care had been taken with the food. I don’t think we will stay again.

    The accommodation is lovely.

The Onsen was exactly as shown in the photos, and both the meals and the Room were excellent, making for a very pleasant stay. On the other hand, I felt the time-related guidance was a bit too thorough. At check-in, I was given a sheet of paper with times written on it for notes I did not end up needing, and about 15 minutes before breakfast and my scheduled check-out time, the Room phone rang repeatedly until I left, which made it hard to relax. I understand that you value punctuality, but it was already clear without so many repeated reminders. If there was a reason you needed an earlier-than-usual check-out, I think it would have helped if you had told me at the beginning so I could be prepared.

If you’re staying in Kusatsu, this is the Ryokan to choose.

I used this Ryokan for a one-night trip with a friend. The Room with a private Onsen bath was divided into a bedroom, living room, and Japanese-style room, and the washroom was spacious and easy to use. If I had to ask for one thing, having two basins in the washroom would make it even better so two people could use it at the same time. The indoor bath was a free-flowing Onsen in a hinoki tub large enough for two, and we were able to relax and enjoy it. As expected of Kusatsu, the water quality was excellent—gentle on the skin without being too strong—and the temperature was comfortable. I visited the large public bath once, but it’s a bit far from the Room, so if you want to soak multiple times, I think choosing a Room with an Onsen bath is best. The meals were very delicious; every dish was excellent, the portions were just right, and since we dined in a private room we could enjoy everything in peace. Overall, this is a great Ryokan that offers good value for money, and I would gladly stay here again when visiting Kusatsu again.

It was an Accommodation with wonderful hospitality.

My friend and I stayed here for the first time, and the warm, attentive welcome from the staff immediately put us at ease. The Accommodation was spotless, and every corridor was beautifully maintained—just walking through them lifted our spirits. The displayed haiku and watercolor paintings quietly reflected the Accommodation’s history and refined elegance, creating a truly comfortable atmosphere. Each of the three bathing areas had its own character, allowing us to savor different settings and water temperatures at a relaxed pace. The meals were richly flavorful, beautifully presented, and a delight for both the eyes and the palate. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time.\n\nI was so happy to have discovered this lovely Accommodation that I wanted to leave a comment. I would love to visit again in another season.

    Dinner is very simple.

To get straight to the point, dinner was too simple—almost like corners were being cut. I travel about 200 nights a year and often stay at luxury Ryokan and luxury Hotels, typically ranging from around JPY 70,000 to JPY 500,000 per night with two meals included. Because of that, I have a good sense of what to expect at this price point. First, when we arrived at the Accommodation and were taking our luggage out of the car, a staff member was just watching from up the slope. No one came to greet us. They did carry our luggage once we reached the Accommodation, but I was surprised to see staff simply watching while we carried it—something I have never experienced before. As for the Room, there is nothing particularly noteworthy; it was average. What shocked me most was dinner. Within 30 minutes of starting the meal, everything had been served except rice, miso soup, pickles, and dessert. The sukiyaki consisted of only two slices of meat and some onion. It was nowhere near a Ryokan kaiseki meal and looked completely different from the Plan photos. I was astonished by how little food there was. I don’t know whether this is due to cutting corners or cost reduction. Unless the menu is changed, it may be difficult for guests to return. Also regarding dining time: we were told it had to be either 6:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.—if so, shouldn’t you remove “7:00 p.m.” from what you display? Some staff members didn’t even greet us when passing by. The man who assisted us at check-in wore his mask below his nose and spoke in an unnecessarily forceful manner; as customer service in hospitality, this felt inappropriate. Overall, it was underwhelming.

    It was a wonderful accommodation!

Just a short walk to Yubatake. We stayed in a Japanese-Western style room with an indoor bath in the main building, and it was very spacious and clean. The indoor bath was also large, with great hot spring water. The large public bath offers two different source springs—Sainokawara-no-Yu and Bandai-no-Yu—and we also enjoyed the open-air bath and sauna. We were able to relax while listening to the sounds of nature. The changing area was clean as well, and everything was excellent overall. The only downside was that the hair dryer’s power was a bit weak. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, with just the right amount of food. One of our companions had ingredients they couldn’t eat, and we really appreciated how thoughtfully this was accommodated. All of the staff were kind, and we had a wonderful time. This is an Accommodation we’d love to stay at again when visiting Kusatsu.

    We thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen.

The Room was very spacious, and the three of us stayed with my elderly mother. They prepared futons in the Japanese-style room, and we were able to sleep soundly. The Onsen was also comfortable. My skin felt smooth afterward. I did notice that the framed pictures on the lounge wall were slightly misaligned, but otherwise everything was clean and pleasant. Thank you very much.

    A truly cozy place!

I have visited more than 80 countries around the world, but this was my first time in Kusatsu Onsen. The town itself had a wonderful charm, and the refined elegance of this Accommodation was truly unforgettable. From the thoughtful hospitality of the staff to the excellent cuisine and superb Onsen baths, everything was outstanding. I would love to return again soon.

At check-in, the staff kindly explained the Accommodation and it was easy to understand. We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath. Both the Room and the bath were spacious, and we were very satisfied. The staff also showed us how to add cold water if it got too hot, so we could soak comfortably. The meals were delicious, and we were happy with the large public bath as well. We stayed for my boyfriend’s birthday, and the Ryokan gave us a teacup as a gift, which made him very happy. We would like to stay again.

    Everything was great.

We stayed on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 with three close families/couples in a room with a private in-room Onsen bath. Last year, an Onsen Accommodation in Ishikawa Prefecture introduced by IKYU was the worst Accommodation we have ever stayed at (IKYU should not send recommendation emails for places like that—it lowers their standards). Since we also ended up wasting quite a lot of money on that stay, we thoroughly researched this trip through Reviews and YouTube. Everything was excellent—the room, service, Onsen, Facility, and meals. In particular, the staff serving our meals were always smiling and attentive, which made the food even more enjoyable. It was a trip that everyone was very satisfied with. Thank you very much. If I had one request: the walk from the parking lot to the entrance is quite long, so carrying luggage is tough. That said, I understand this may be due to staffing shortages and can’t really be helped. It might be even better if there were someone available in the parking area to assist or guide guests.

The trip to Kusatsu was well worth it.

My spouse and I drove from Osaka to Kusatsu, and after Golden Week we decided to go for it. There are many Ryokan in Kusatsu, and after a lot of consideration we chose Boun. The Room was wonderful—when we opened the door, we both exclaimed “Wow!” It was bright, clean, and beautiful, and the spacious balcony (terrace) let us relax very comfortably. I wanted to give 5 stars for everything, but the hot spring water was a little too hot, so I gave it 4. Still, it was great—thank you very much.

    Thank you for your support.

The Room with an open-air bath was excellent, and the Ryokan’s private parking was convenient. It was also close enough for a stroll around Yubatake, which was great. Dinner was served in the Room, and I was able to use the massage service as well, so I felt truly rested. The service was wonderful too, and I would like to stay again if I have the chance.

    It was excellent.

This was my first time in Kusatsu Onsen, and not only the Onsen but also the meals were truly delicious. Everyone was very kind, and I had a comfortable stay. If it were closer, this is a Ryokan I would love to visit again.

    Wonderful Accommodation

I stayed here with my elderly mother. Above all, the staff were wonderful—each person took great care of us. Even after checkout, they looked after our luggage, lent us an umbrella, and even drove us to the bus terminal. We truly appreciated everything they did. We stayed in a Room with a private indoor bath. It had just been renovated and was very clean and beautiful. The gentle underfloor heating was especially comfortable. The bath water was a little hot, but the hinoki cypress scent was lovely, and it felt relaxing in a different way from the public bath. For dinner we had shabu-shabu. The portions were generous, and every dish was carefully prepared with refined seasoning. Breakfast was also truly delicious. My mother really enjoyed it as well, and we had a wonderful time. We would love to stay again.

    Spring snow has fallen.

The Onsen, the cuisine, and the Room were all perfect. We chose a Room with a private Onsen. The furnishings were lovely as well, and the bed mattress was excellent—I slept very soundly. If I had to mention one thing, there were two identical pillows; I think guests would appreciate having two different types (e.g., one higher and one lower, or one firm and one soft). The meal truly felt like spring, with cherry blossoms included. The dessert—a sakura-flavored cake with a texture like jōyo manju—was especially delicious. Even though it was April, snow flurries started in the evening, making the steam rising from the illuminated Yubatake look even whiter and creating a magical atmosphere. I’m older, but I felt excited like a young person. I heard Boun is a historic Onsen Accommodation. It has that classic Onsen-inn charm while incorporating new touches throughout; everything—from the tableware to the interior decorations—felt tasteful. There were also May dolls, koinobori ornaments, ukiyo-e-style artwork, and posters reminiscent of Taisho Romance or early Showa era—all very enjoyable to look at. I wanted to take more time to admire them, but because the Onsen was so wonderful we went in many times, and our one-night stay passed in no time. Thank you to all of the staff for your hospitality. It was a very satisfying trip.

It was an Accommodation that made me want to stay in and relax.

I came with high expectations for the Onsen, but this Accommodation was wonderful in every way, not just the bath. The space was clean and calming without being flashy, and the service showed thoughtful attention without feeling excessive—everything was very satisfying. I went out for dinner so I can only comment on breakfast, but it was a gentle, wholesome menu and very good. Next time, I’d like to skip sightseeing and simply stay in at the Accommodation, soaking in the Onsen from time to time.

    It was very relaxing.

It was my first trip to Kusatsu in 30 years. This time, we visited to celebrate our child’s university graduation. We chose this Accommodation because we wanted to relax and enjoy our meals in a private dining room rather than a buffet. The Reviews from other guests were highly rated, so we arrived looking forward to it, and the hospitality exceeded our expectations. Dinner served in our Room and breakfast in a private dining room were wonderful; of course the food was delicious, but more than that, we felt warmth in every smile and word from the staff. Because this is not an Accommodation with many Rooms, we were able to use the baths at ease without crowds. From the flowers displayed along the corridors to the ceramic cover placed over the drain at the washbasin, every detail was thoughtfully arranged and truly soothing. Also, when we tried to go out after check-in, they prepared our family’s footwear without us even saying our name. I was surprised that the front desk staff remembered both our names and faces so quickly. We will definitely return again. Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality.

It was a cozy and relaxing Accommodation.

For my first trip of the new year, I finally visited Kusatsu Onsen, which I’d been wanting to go to. Since I love Onsen, I was looking for a Room with both a large public bath and an open-air bath in the guest room. The atmosphere was calm, and I was able to relax right up until check-out. As it was a snowy day, the Shuttle Service to the station was greatly appreciated. The meals were so filling that we hardly did any food tasting the next day. The Onsen offered various types that could be enjoyed at different times, and the in-room bath was spacious and very clean. It’s also close to Yubatake, and it’s an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

    It was wonderful.

This was my first time in Kusatsu, and it turned into a truly enjoyable stay. I was a bit worried about causing trouble as I was traveling with my elementary-school-aged son, but all of the staff were kind and welcoming, so we felt very comfortable throughout our visit. The bath in our Room was at just the right temperature, and we were able to relax while enjoying the mountain view. Everything was spotless down to every detail, and you could really feel the care put into the furnishings and Facility. There were none of the disappointing issues you sometimes notice even at long-established or newly renovated Ryokan. The Onsen baths were also extremely clean everywhere, and I loved how the setting made good use of the original old fittings—it had a wonderful atmosphere. It was clean throughout and very pleasant to bathe in. One small thing I noticed was that the bright green anti-slip artificial turf in the bathing area felt a bit strong visually. Since brown artificial turf is available these days as well, using that might make the space feel even more refined. The artworks and paintings displayed around the property were all beautiful and tasteful. I was especially impressed that all of the flowers were fresh flowers, carefully arranged—truly wonderful. Artificial flowers or fake greenery often take away from an experience for me, so this really stood out. The Shuttle Service to places like the ski resort and bus stop was also handled with great attention and flexibility, which helped us a lot. I felt dinner portions might be on the generous side, but everything was delicious so we ended up eating it all. We were very satisfied. The location made sightseeing and walking around town easy, yet it still felt calm and removed from any bustle—perfect for a relaxing stay. The slopes were a bit steep, but they worked well as some post-meal exercise (laugh). If I had to mention anything: The private dining room prepared for dinner was quiet and relaxing, but it felt slightly dim under cool fluorescent lighting; warmer lighting might have been nicer. It also felt almost too silent for my taste—I would have enjoyed some background music as well. The private room prepared for breakfast was excellent, so having dinner there might have been even more comfortable. That said, this is simply personal preference—a luxurious complaint. Overall it was an extremely satisfying stay. The Room felt too spacious for just two people, so next time I would love to bring my parents as well. Thank you very much. (The cat was absolutely adorable!)

    Short-staffed?

Late-night snacks were served in the Room, but each course only arrived after we finished the previous one—and the wait was extremely long. I assumed they might be short-staffed, so I tried to be understanding. However, breakfast was the real issue. We received a call 15 minutes beforehand saying, “Your meal is ready,” but when we arrived, the hot pot flame had already been turned off. That’s unacceptable—if you don’t light it after guests are seated, it gets cold. Whether it was to rush service or simply a mistake, it wasn’t acceptable.

    There was no advance notice.

The Onsen and the Room were wonderful. However, in past Reservations I received a confirmation email from the Accommodation about a week in advance to confirm my expected arrival time, but this time I received nothing and was worried whether my Reservation had gone through. At the very least, I would have appreciated a direct message from the Accommodation acknowledging that they had received my Reservation.

First visit in 17 years! The bath was amazing!

The other day, I stayed here for the first time in 17 years! Once again, I was impressed—Kusatsu’s hot spring water is simply amazing! The large public bath was great, but above all, the bath in the Room was outstanding—I used it five times (lol)! Another highlight was how kind and courteous many of the Accommodation’s female staff were. We had a baby with us, and they helped soothe our baby and gladly checked various things for us. They were truly thoughtful, and we really appreciated it!! The meals were also as delicious as ever. The portions were smaller than 17 years ago, but honestly there was still more than enough variety (back then there was so much we couldn’t finish). Overall we were very satisfied, but there were a few disappointing points. First, regarding cleaning: There were several hairs on the floor in the Room. Since we had a baby with us, we always check the floor first when traveling, and we found about six hairs. Also a minor point: an empty cola can had been left outside, and it was clearly visible from the Room’s bath area, which was disappointing. It may be an easy-to-miss spot, but I would have been happy if it had been noticed. Also, perhaps because Kusatsu’s hot spring water isn’t ideal for babies and there aren’t many guests with infants overall, it felt like the staff weren’t very accustomed to families with babies. They responded willingly to everything we asked for so I have no complaints in that regard; however, it may not be suitable for those seeking special accommodations. That said, overall we are very satisfied! In particular, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the female staff member who took care of our Room. Thank you very much!

    Completely satisfied.

We thoroughly enjoyed the three different baths. It was our first time experiencing the Nishinokawara hot spring (Nishino-yu and Yuzan-no-yu), and the water quality was excellent. Yuzan-no-yu also features water from the Bandai-ko source, making it fun to compare the two types of hot springs. Additionally, we were very satisfied with both the service and meals (dinner/breakfast) and would love to visit again if given the chance.
