    The meals are excellent.

We stayed for a Multiple Night Stay and were satisfied overall. The Room was spacious and felt very open. With three rooms, we could rest right away in the bedroom. However, I regretted choosing in-room dining. Since we’re used to sitting on chairs, eating at a low table was tough... We’ll reconsider next time. The service was also good. The Shuttle Service was arranged promptly, and the staff were polite and pleasant. That said, I think the attendant in charge of meals needs much more training. Simply being energetic does not equal proper dining support—especially if in-room or private-room dining is your standard style of service. I do not want food served by someone with long nails and nail art. Beyond appearance, I hope you will ensure they learn the basics expected in food service, such as attentiveness and manners when handling meals. As expected from Sanraku, the cuisine was excellent! Sanraku in Nasu is wonderful as well, but Kinugawa is just as impressive. The dishes were very creative and we were extremely satisfied. The only challenge (for us seniors) was that there was simply too much food (laugh). (All the more reason I’d like to see higher-quality service from the attendant—it’s a shame for the chefs.) It was very helpful that towels are provided in the large public bath area at all times. Due to the Accommodation’s location, the open-air bath is semi-open-air, but it had a great atmosphere. Thank you for taking care of us during our stay. We’ll visit again.

    Unfortunately.

This was my third stay. I knew the building is old and still has a Showa-era feel, but it didn’t seem well cleaned—dirty windows, cobwebs, and the like. In the past, the service and food were good, but this time some staff provided service like a cheap budget Ryokan. In particular, there is a limited-time beer service at the post-bath lounge next to the large public bath, but the older female staff member there was terrible. Maybe because we arrived right before closing time she was in a bad mood, but she was intimidating. Her manner of speaking was blunt: “How many?” “Beer is fine?” On top of that, even though we hadn’t finished drinking, she kept watching us as if she wanted to clear things away quickly. She did the same to other guests—collecting glasses immediately the moment they finished and set them down. The attitude was unbelievably unpleasant. The atmosphere was completely different from when I stayed three years ago. Dinner also felt poorly handled: sashimi and other items were already set on the table from the start, and raw fish was lukewarm. The attendant wasn’t exactly rude, but every time a dish was served it came with “Here you go—sorry to keep you waiting,” making it feel like a cafeteria (laughs). I also felt the food quality had declined compared with before. Honestly, nothing stood out as delicious—everything was just average and tasted like something you can find anywhere. It made me wonder what this place’s concept is supposed to be. Is it aiming for upscale or mass-market? It feels confused. This may sound harsh, but there was no trace of what Sanraku felt like when it first opened. At this level, I won’t be returning.

    The building itself ...

The building itself felt a bit old, but I was amazed by how unbelievably spacious the Room was. There was an expensive ReFa hair dryer in the Onsen changing area, and I was happy my hair became so smooth. Right next to the Room was the famous Oni no Daikaidan (Demon Staircase), and we could see the Kinugawa River from the Room—such a great view. The nori tsukudani served at dinner was delicious, and I wanted to buy it as a souvenir, but unfortunately it wasn’t for sale because it doesn’t keep well. All of the staff were incredibly kind. The foreign staff member who assisted us spoke fluent Japanese; they handled our luggage smoothly before check-in, and when we entered our Room our bags were already there—I was truly impressed by their attentiveness. After check-out, even in light rain, the driver who provided Shuttle Service to the station dropped us off right in front of a souvenir shop since we wanted to buy gifts, which really helped us. With a typhoon approaching, we returned from Nikko to the Hotel by taxi, but they told us to call anytime and they would flexibly assist even at more distant stations where trains weren’t running—I felt their service level was outstanding. Since we don’t have a car, this support meant everything to us, and I’d love to stay again if I have the chance.

A welcoming Accommodation with thoughtful staff who put you at ease

We stayed for two nights. This was our second time visiting Kinugawa Onsen during the Obon holidays, following last year. We had passed by this Ryokan last year and said, “Next time, let’s stay here,” so we were excited to finally visit. I rated the guest room, Facility, and baths 4 stars because the building’s age is noticeable, and the baths felt a bit small for the size of the Ryokan. That said, everything was clean, and having a standard room of over 70 m² is wonderful. I also love Accommodations where towels are available in the bath area for guests to use freely. As mentioned in other Reviews, all of the Ryokan staff are outstanding. They’re never overly familiar, yet still warm and approachable—truly comfortable service from everyone. During Obon they offered a rickshaw service; after we joined it, several staff members asked us things like “How was it?” and “Did you enjoy it?” I’m the type who enjoys those little conversations, so I happily chatted with them… Some even remembered my face and name during our two-night stay, which made me very happy. The rain was heavy, so after checkout I asked if we could wait in the lobby for a while. They kindly agreed, and once it eased up they drove us to the station. Many places have fixed Shuttle Service times only, so their flexibility really helped us. The meals were delicious as well—breakfast was more than we could finish. Everything looked beautiful too. Rather than packing in lots of sightseeing, we prefer to relax at the Accommodation (honestly—even without sightseeing at all; just enjoying the baths and meals is enough), so a place where you can truly unwind is precious. The atmosphere among guests also felt relatively calm. It feels less like “Kids and families welcome!!” and more like a traditional, peaceful Onsen Ryokan that lets you breathe easy. (It’s not that there are no families—just that they likely aren’t targeting them as their main audience.) The shampoo bar and services where you can freely try items like CHANEL or Dior lotions were also lovely. It helped me feel elegant again. It isn’t an easy price point to stay frequently… but it’s a wonderful Accommodation that makes me want to return. Thank you very much for taking care of us.

    This time, eight of ...

This time, eight of us from three generations of our family stayed here (and given my parents’ age, it may be their last trip). The Room wasn’t particularly new, but it was thoroughly cleaned and felt very comfortable. Also, perhaps from travel fatigue, Grandpa’s stomach wasn’t feeling well, so we suddenly asked for rice porridge at breakfast. They kindly agreed and prepared it for us. Thanks to that, he finished the porridge, and the rest of our trip went smoothly. We are truly grateful for the staff’s warm hospitality and thoughtful care.

The meals were absolutely delicious. Both the presentation and the taste were on par with, or even better than, those of a high-end traditional Japanese restaurant. I would definitely like to stay here again.

We traveled with our nearly 2-year-old daughter, and the Room was spacious, so she could move around freely and seemed to have a great time. The meals were generous in portion and very delicious. There were also plenty of bath amenities, which we really appreciated.

Breakfast and dinner served in your private room, with calm, exceptional hospitality that makes every encounter feel truly special.

We stayed as a group of five in three Japanese-style Rooms. It was very spacious and comfortable, with not only the three Rooms but also a window-side area, which was great. Having separate Rooms was especially helpful for a three-generation stay. Meals were served in a private dining Room on the same floor, so we didn’t need to take the elevator down to the second floor, and it felt calm and private. Since it was a separate Room, it also had its own sink and toilet for private use. Both the meal quality and the proprietress’s hospitality were unforgettable—a truly special once-in-a-lifetime experience. I also noticed that the large public Onsen bath had high-end hair dryers installed. In addition, towels were freely available in the changing area, so there was no need to bring towels from our Room—this made us feel it is truly an excellent Hotel. The women in our group appreciated being able to choose their yukata and said the bath amenities were plentiful and wonderful. We arrived by car, and when we stopped in front of the Hotel lobby, staff helped with our luggage and took care of parking arrangements for our car as well—this was a huge help for traveling with three generations. It was our first time staying at Sanraku, but it was so good that we decided to stay at Kyoto Sanraku again when we visit Kyoto next month. We would also like to return to Sanraku at Kinugawa Onsen. Thank you very much for helping us create such wonderful once-in-a-lifetime memories across three generations.

In-room dining service is the best.

First, the Shuttle Service by car was courteous, and they even took us to an additional starting point for the river rafting. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a separate Room. One attendant looked after us throughout, which we really appreciated. Dinner was a full-course Japanese meal; the salt-grilled ayu was especially delicious and memorable. The Room had both Japanese- and Western-style spaces, so we could relax on the tatami and also sleep comfortably in the bed. The view overlooking the Kinugawa River from the balcony was spectacular. The bath facilities—with large and small tubs, an open-air bath, and a sauna—were also very relaxing. One disappointment was that the balcony did not seem to be thoroughly cleaned.

    Relax and unwind.

This was a wonderful Accommodation that blends the atmosphere of a traditional Onsen Ryokan with modern convenience. The meals in particular were outstanding in every way—taste, presentation, service, and the ambiance of the dining area. The only minor issue was that some Rooms had a faint smell of tobacco, but otherwise everything was excellent; I was able to relax and recharge and had a truly lovely time.

It feels like something is missing.

We stayed as a couple at Sanraku in Kinugawa Onsen, hoping to relax, and chose it because of its great Reviews. When we called upon arriving at the station, they came to pick us up right away, which was a big help. The building was well cleaned throughout, and even though it is older, it felt comfortable and pleasant. Many of the staff were young, and everyone welcomed us with a smile—thank you very much. Our Room was so spacious that it felt almost too large for just the two of us, and we even talked about coming back next time with our children. The attendant at the dining area was also polite with a wonderful smile, so we were able to enjoy our meal cheerfully from start to finish. The bath water temperature was just right, and we could soak and relax. However, my husband said there were few amenities in the men’s large public bath, and he wished there had been something like hair lotion. The Room itself was spacious and nice, but the air conditioning didn’t work well; even on high it didn’t cool down much, so we had an uncomfortably warm night. Since it seems to be centralized air conditioning for the whole building—and I understand there are different preferences among guests—I suppose it can’t be helped, but I do wish it could have been a bit cooler. I do think this is a very pleasant Accommodation overall, but for some reason I didn’t quite feel “We must come back,” leaving me with an unsatisfied feeling. I wonder what was missing for me.

    Thank you for your support.

We stayed as a group of three to celebrate my parents’ anniversary. The staff were courteous throughout, and their thoughtful hospitality made our stay very comfortable. We were also very satisfied with the breakfast and dinner, where we could enjoy a variety of dishes in small portions. The flavors were light and delicious. The commemorative photo taken at dinner made both of my parents very happy. We would love to stay again when we visit the Kinugawa area.

    Nasu is nice too, but...

Kinugawa Sanraku is also wonderful. We enjoyed the spacious Room and delicious cuisine. It’s an Accommodation filled with outstanding hospitality that you wouldn’t expect from a large Ryokan, and the food is truly excellent. We take our usual route—traveling from Asakusa to Shimo-Imaichi on the Limited Express Liberty, then riding the steam locomotive to Kinugawa Onsen—but the scenery changes with the seasons, so it feels fresh every time. You can walk from the station, but it’s great that if you call, they can arrange a Shuttle Service pickup right away. It’s also great that you can move around without worrying about Shuttle Service bus schedules. Next time, we’d love to visit Kinugawa Onsen when it’s snowy.

    Sanraku was amazing.

Three friends and I stayed here. From the warm welcome at the entrance, check-in with a bowl of matcha tea and a clear explanation of the facilities, guidance to our Room, exquisite breakfast and dinner served in the Room, beautifully presented and artistic cuisine, the tasteful Room setting, to the send-off at departure—every staff member greeted us with a smile and kind words. Everything was attentive and made for a truly comfortable trip. We are genuinely grateful. All three of us were very satisfied, and we would love to stay again. Just one thing: it suddenly felt like summer, so the Room was hot. When we opened the windows fully, we got bitten by mosquitoes during the night—but that’s part of the memories too.

Despite many positives, why doesn’t it feel satisfying?

Positives: (1) Matcha service upon arrival (2) A glass of beer after the bath (3) Friendly, attentive front desk staff (4) The building is clean and well maintained, with thorough cleaning throughout However, I didn’t feel a strong sense of satisfaction or fulfillment after the trip. The meals were fine and safe overall, but not memorable. Dinner: The small appetizer bowls and dishes were ordinary. There was no standout dish that impressed me, so it felt like I was simply eating. The sashimi was a standard three-item assortment (you can get better at a seafood izakaya), and the tempura was only two items, which felt insufficient. Breakfast: The main grilled salmon was cold and felt quite disappointing. There were many small side dishes, but they were also ordinary. There was no natto, and I would have preferred a fried egg as well. Most critically, the miso soup tasted extremely weak with little to no dashi flavor—it wasn’t good. Even store-bought instant fresh miso soup tastes much better. Overall, I couldn’t feel the chef’s passion or commitment—perhaps they are exhausted, or perhaps costs have been cut due to rising prices? The bath area (partly outdoors; thermometer left broken) was clean and not bad, but compared with other Ryokan open-air baths it somehow felt lacking. In general, because the food didn’t move me and I couldn’t experience that special “escape from everyday life,” this trip felt unfulfilling aside from sightseeing. I apologize to the Ryokan for being blunt, but these are my honest impressions.

A Long-Awaited Visit to Kinugawa Onsen

This was my first train trip considering the snow, and I appreciated the hotel's shuttle service to the station, the late check-out aligned with the train schedule, the very spacious room, and the beauty of the tableware and delicate cuisine. I was very satisfied. It has become one of the hotels I want to visit again. Thank you very much.

An Accommodation for a Long-lasting Relationship

A spacious indoor bath with just the right temperature allows you to relax and rejuvenate both body and mind. The meticulously prepared kaiseki cuisine, accompanied by an elegantly written menu, delights your taste buds and eyes every time. The souvenir corner offers a carefully curated selection that tempts you to shop more than planned. From the warm welcome to the heartfelt farewell, the spirit of hospitality shines through. While we usually search for accommodations on IKYU after deciding on our destination, this place is an exception. My spouse and I embark on our journey specifically to stay at Sanraku.

Thank you for your kind support.

As mentioned in the Review, the overall service was excellent. However, one point: The website stated "Meals guaranteed in a private room!" which was a key factor in making the Reservation. However, upon arrival, we were informed that it would be separated by a roll curtain. When we asked the staff, they mentioned that such details were not written on their end. In conclusion, we were accommodated with a semi-private room and appreciated the consideration. Was this an error or miscommunication from IKYU? The cause remains unclear. Since this happened at the entrance, although the Room and bath were great, it left us feeling slightly uncertain. The person who provided Shuttle Service on our way back was very pleasant—thank you so much!
