    We stayed here for a...

    We stayed here for a family trip. From arrival to departure, the hospitality was exceptional, and we thoroughly enjoyed the meals and Onsen. The large public bath also had a sauna and cold bath, allowing us to fully relax. We would love to stay here again if we have the chance.

    First Reservation Accommodation from IKYU

    I have stayed at various accommodation reservation sites, but this was my first time making a reservation through IKYU. I was satisfied with both the room size and grade. The large public bath was spacious, and there was a beer service in the relaxation area after bathing. The meals were also delicious and satisfying.

    It was good, but...

    The public bath was excellent, but the Room felt too old. A renovation would improve satisfaction. It would be great to have a humidifier in the Room.

    It was a very pleasant accommodation.

    I used this for my wife's birthday celebration. I was very satisfied with the spacious Room and great view. Soaking in the open-air bath early in the morning while seeing the moon was also a nice touch. This time, I visited after the autumn leaves season, but if there is a next time, I would like to go during a season when the mountains are beautiful.

    Poor staff hospitality

    The taste of the meals, the onsen, and the view from the room were excellent. However, the service from the staff serving meals was disappointing. They seemed constantly rushed, and when I tried to order a drink while they were clearing plates, I was told with a frown, "Please wait a moment!" which ruined the dining atmosphere. I felt hesitant to make any requests as it seemed like an inconvenience. While it's forgivable that an ordered drink didn't arrive, actions like silently checking if glasses were empty or placing dishes on the table with force felt surprisingly careless for a ryokan in this price range. There were some very pleasant staff members as well; however, as mentioned in other reviews, there are certain staff whose behavior feels off-putting. Aside from this issue during meal times, we had an enjoyable stay and were satisfied with our trip overall but felt that this accommodation is not one we could recommend to friends or acquaintances.

    No return visits.

    Stayed with three generations: 4 adults, 2 elementary school children, and 2 preschoolers. Due to system limitations, I booked as "2 adults" per room and noted in the message to the accommodation that one of them was an elementary school child. Upon visiting to drop off luggage on the day of check-in, we were told that "this is an adult-only accommodation and no meals for children have been prepared." I explained that due to system constraints, I had booked as adults but included a child. While they kindly adjusted one meal to a child's portion for us, during check-in and meals, staff repeatedly commented loudly enough for us to hear things like "Isn't this supposed to be adults only?" This left us feeling uncomfortable and mistrusted by the ryokan. At checkout, I clarified several points: - For a room with 1 adult + 1 elementary school child (+ preschooler), charges are based on at least two adults. Additional charges apply for extra bedding for preschoolers. - Can children's meals be provided in such cases? Yes, if informed in advance; however, charges remain at adult rates. - Was my message about having children understood? The staff confirmed receiving it but interpreted it as requesting adult meals even though I clearly stated one guest was an elementary school child. While I regret not calling ahead instead of relying solely on messages and appreciate their efforts in adjusting meals last minute or celebrating our occasion upon request (which they did read), this experience highlighted issues with how irregular situations are handled. Discussing guests audibly among staff or providing inconsistent explanations does not reflect well on professionalism or sincerity.

    Comfortable

    We stayed for two nights with two adults and our 7-month-old baby. Our baby was so excited about the tatami mats and kept moving around. The Onsen had a perfect temperature, and we ended up going multiple times! After enjoying the Onsen, we could have beer or yuzu juice as part of the evening service. The staff were very friendly and interacted a lot with our baby, making them smile happily. The meals were delicious, and we ate plenty! We had such a relaxing time. Thank you very much!

    They responded promptly.

    Thank you so much for picking me up and dropping me off every time, even though I went out multiple times. You even brought my luggage to the station at the end. Your helpfulness and energy are truly wonderful.

    We stayed as a famil...

    We stayed as a family. The accommodation was well-cleaned and, although old, had a sense of cleanliness. It was nice to be able to choose colorful yukatas. When we were shown to the room, it would have been helpful if there had been even a brief explanation about the location of the safe or how to use the beverages. Dinner was lightly seasoned and served in just the right portions. While it was enjoyable, there wasn’t anything particularly memorable about it. The large public bath and open-air bath were smaller than expected, with limited washing areas, so depending on the time, we had to wait for availability. Some showerheads seemed different as they stopped working midway through use, which was inconvenient. However, the hot water itself was pleasant. At checkout, we waited for our car to be moved after being told "we’ll call you," but even after 20 minutes of waiting without any update, I went to inquire at reception myself. It appeared that our car had already been moved some time ago and I received my keys then and there. Whether I misheard "we’ll call you" is unclear; however, a simple follow-up would have been appreciated in such situations. When we arrived at the hotel earlier on our stay’s first day, staff greeted us promptly with warm hospitality which made entering feel welcoming; unfortunately though upon departure neither farewells nor send-offs occurred leaving behind disappointment instead overall impression suggests slight lack-of attentiveness/explanations throughout experience

    Be Enchanted by the Autumn Leaves of Kinugawa

    I reserved "Sanraku" in early November to enjoy the autumn leaves of Kinugawa. Although the foliage season had already passed around Irohazaka and Lake Chuzenji, the vibrant colors near Kinugawa Onsen and Nikko Toshogu Shrine were at their peak, just as the hotel staff mentioned, "This year is a great year for autumn leaves." From our room on the 9th floor of "Sanraku," located right next to Fureai Bridge with a large painting of "Kinuta-kun" on its grand staircase, we could enjoy a stunning view of Kinugawa and the surrounding mountains adorned with colorful leaves. (Unfortunately, the outdoor bath on the lobby floor's 3rd level did not offer much of a view.) The hotel's interior reflects meticulous attention to detail by its manager, offering plenty of photo-worthy spots throughout. For dinner, we enjoyed their creative kaiseki course (Shimotsuki cuisine), starting with an appetizer platter featuring small portions of delicacies: Nanzenji-mushi (steamed dish), monkfish liver tofu, shiroha greens in broth, simmered saury with sansho pepper, wakame noodles in ginger vinegar sauce, chicken cheese roll-ups, and sake-marinated sweet potato—all beautifully arranged on a lacquer tray. Next came an autumn-themed dobin-mushi soup made from Rishiri kelp and Makurazaki dried bonito broth. The sashimi selection included tuna, sea bream, and squid. For meat lovers like myself—grilled wagyu beef served on a ceramic plate; for my wife who prefers seafood over marbled meat—abalone was offered instead. The soup featured shrimp taro dumplings paired perfectly with shrimp pieces, crab meat & yuba wrapped under soy milk-based sauce while grilled tilefish seasoned w/yuzu miso added another layer richness alongside fried sesame tofu garnished lightly lemon zest! Finally rice accompaniments miso-soup pickles rounded meal ending dessert trio persimmon pear warabi mochi bite-sized portions delightfully refreshing finish! Breakfast spread included grilled salmon croquette flavored curry-style stewed ganmodoki salad tamagoyaki raw egg condiments such as nori tsukudani konjac sansho paste complementing steamed white-rice well balanced flavors soft udon noodles served instead traditional misosoups surprisingly matched taste profile nicely! Our spacious Japanese-style suite exceeded expectations spanning approximately seventy square meters featuring hidden cozy nook resembling secret hideaway beyond bedroom area allowing us indulge luxurious atmosphere together comfortably. However downside indoor baths sauna facilities ample space whereas open-air ones felt slightly cramped lacking scenic views overlooking river foliage perhaps due proximity opposite-facing larger hotels limiting design possibilities?

    A Luxurious Ryokan with Exceptional Strength

    Kinugawa Onsen, often associated with a declining image due to many abandoned ryokans, still retains its charm. During our weekday visit, the onsen town was quiet with few tourists and lacked vibrancy. However, the Ryokan Sanraku where we stayed stood out as a distinguished luxury ryokan in an excellent location overlooking the Kinugawa River. While some aspects of the facility felt slightly dated, it was well-maintained and very clean. The guest rooms, hallways, baths, and dining areas were all spacious with thoughtfully designed layouts that provided a comfortable experience. The staff offered courteous hospitality that made us feel at ease. Dinner featured creative Japanese cuisine which was enjoyable but not particularly memorable. Breakfast included a variety of dishes; however, many were heavily seasoned side dishes for rice that didn’t appeal to us due to concerns about salt intake. Overall, this ryokan demonstrated its enduring quality as a "luxury establishment with deep-rooted excellence" that has been cherished by many over the years.

    Friendly staff

    I stayed here with my mother for a trip. Although the building itself is old, the interior has been beautifully renovated. The Room we stayed in was a corner Japanese-Western style room with large windows offering a wide view of Kinugawa and the colorful mountain scenery. The Room was equipped with a Mytrex Medi Neck and a seat massage gun, and when I called the front desk, they promptly brought us a handy gun as well. In the evening, when I thought about driving to the station, the Ryokan staff immediately arranged for a minibus to take us there. On our way back, they also came to pick us up right away after we called. The private dinner and breakfast were luxurious and delicious, leaving us very satisfied. All of the staff were kind and made our stay extremely comfortable. Thank you very much!

    Three-Generation Travel

    We stayed at the accommodation for a three-generation trip with my husband, daughter, her spouse, and our grandchild. The shuttle service staff, check-in and guidance staff, dining staff, and those at the post-bath relaxation area all provided exceptionally polite and pleasant service that left us impressed with their high level of hospitality. They arranged adjacent rooms for us and my daughter's family, allowing us to enjoy meals in a private room without worrying about others around us. We were able to relax and create many wonderful memories. Although the facilities and rooms felt slightly dated, they were spacious, clean, and comfortable. The view from our room was excellent; we enjoyed having the Fureai Bridge right in front of us. It was slightly disappointing that there wasn’t anything particularly noteworthy about the meals or any sake that matched our preferences. However, it was an accommodation we would love to visit again in the future. Thank you for your hospitality!

    It was a very lovely accommodation!

    We stayed here during a trip to Nikko with my mother celebrating her 77th birthday. The accommodation and room were very clean. The room had a MYTREX massage device, the large public bath offered a selection of shampoos, there were cosmetics (CHANEL and DIOR!), and even the hairdryer was from ReFa, which made three generations of women in our group very excited. The meals were beautifully crafted kaiseki cuisine with elegant flavors. Although I only mentioned the 77th birthday in the remarks section, they prepared a handwritten card, a purple celebratory vest, took photos for us, and printed them before we left. My mother was deeply moved! Above all, every staff member was kind and attentive. There were no foreign staff members or large groups of inbound tourists around, so we could enjoy our stay peacefully and comfortably. As for the onsen bathwater—it seemed to be heated and diluted—so it lacked that authentic onsen feel; hence -1 point for that aspect. It cost ¥30,000 per person—a bit of a splurge—but it was worth every yen! Highly recommended!

    Appreciation for the staff's thoughtfulness

    We visited during a slightly late summer vacation with our grown-up children. The room was spacious enough for four adults. For women, there were services like selectable yukata and haori, along with amenities such as face masks neatly placed in cute drawstring bags. In the large public bath area, high-quality cosmetics were provided, showing great attention to female guests. The meals were all delicious but typical of a ryokan-style cuisine. It was a bit disappointing that the grilled ayu fish was slightly cold. While it is not a newly built accommodation with the latest facilities, every staff member was incredibly pleasant from check-in to check-out without any moments of dissatisfaction. This was our first visit, but we felt both friendliness and professionalism in their service, leaving us highly satisfied. We would definitely choose this accommodation again when visiting Kinugawa.

    Family Trip with Elderly Parents

    I am so glad I chose to stay at this accommodation. As I have aged, I decided to take the express train instead of driving for the first time. The shuttle service from the station was very convenient, and upon arrival, several staff members warmly welcomed us. Their thoughtful hospitality brought great joy to my elderly parents and made me very happy as well. The room was spacious with a nice view. Although the women's open-air bath had limited scenery, my father enjoyed the view from the men's bath. We had our meals at Ogura. During dinner, a young female staff member with excellent conversational skills attended to us, which delighted my father immensely. Her detailed explanations of each dish and her warm smile were truly appreciated. The dinner featured creative dishes, delicious wagyu beef, and luxurious tableware that added to our enjoyment. The beer served in the post-bath lounge was refreshing, and my parents loved the yuzu juice they received—it was exceptionally tasty. The next morning, a kind male staff member provided detailed explanations about nearby tourist spots that even my father with mobility issues could enjoy. Thanks to his guidance, we had a wonderful time visiting places like the suspension bridge and Edo Village. We also appreciated the shuttle service to the suspension bridge. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again someday—thank you for providing such a wonderful experience. My elderly parents especially appreciated having their room near an elevator for easy access and its spaciousness that allowed them to relax comfortably. They were also deeply touched by how polite and attentive all of your staff members were throughout our stay. In these challenging times with labor shortages everywhere, I sincerely hope accommodations like yours—offering warm hospitality reminiscent of traditional Japan—will continue for years to come!

    A Moving Experience After Nearly 30 Years

    We visited Sanraku for the first time in 30 years as our twin sons, who are in the 5th grade, had a day off from school, and it exceeded our expectations. The whole family was delighted. Having stayed at most luxury Ryokans and Hotels across the whole country, it was refreshing to have such an enjoyable experience together as a family. The Room was spacious and comfortable, though it was a bit disappointing to see stains on the carpet in the washroom and some dirt on the window glass. However, the cleaning and facilities in the bath were impeccable, and the female staff at the large public bath and the elderly female staff at the adjacent rest area were excellent. The only downside was the inexperience of the young service staff during dinner. Despite this, our family is already planning to visit twice a year from now on.

    Disappointing after a long time.

    When I visited after a long time, the Ryokan had completely turned into a budget-style accommodation. The low quality of the staff and the smell of cigarettes in the Room made me feel uncomfortable. The dining staff provided excellent service as before, which was the only positive aspect. The food has also become more generic and was served cold. I will not be returning. It’s disappointing because I used to visit often when it was better, and I have many fond memories of this Ryokan.

    Completely satisfied and comfortable.

    The accommodation is not far from Kinugawa Onsen Station, but considering the intense summer heat, I chose this place with shuttle service. They came to pick me up right away. From the moment I entered the accommodation, I felt comfortable throughout my stay. The highlight was definitely the large public bath—it was wonderful! I had an early soak in the first bath of the day, and its cleanliness and comfort remained consistent even late at night. It was clear that they clean it frequently. Bath towels and other amenities are provided, so you can visit the bath with just yourself. A clean bath is truly amazing—so relaxing! The room was spacious and spotless as well. All staff members were kind and attentive, which made me feel rejuvenated. Highly recommended accommodation! I would absolutely stay here again!

    I visited to celebrate my husband's birthday.

    The staff's attentiveness was exceptional. Not only the reception and room staff but also the bath attendants and massage therapists made us feel genuinely welcomed by all the staff. While the facility shows some age, it was impeccably clean, so it didn’t bother us at all. The meals were incredibly delicious, and I heard that some guests visit specifically for the food. Additionally, since it was my birthday, they kindly took a commemorative photo and even served a special ice cream platter. Thank you very much! While checking out, I noticed someone next to me making their next reservation. I completely understand why they would want to return. When I visit Kinugawa again, I would love to stay at Sanraku once more!

    I stayed during the Obon holiday.

    The entrance was luxurious, and the utility areas were spacious, well-cleaned, and gave a sense of cleanliness. The staff greeted us with smiles and provided a detailed explanation of the Facility during check-in. The meals were abundant in variety, featuring local ingredients in a vibrant menu. Both the indoor and outdoor baths had plenty of water with perfect temperatures, and the shower pressure was strong without any issues. Towels were plentiful, and the hairdryers worked perfectly. However, I was surprised to see someone with tattoos using the bath facilities.

    I was very satisfied, but...

    The room size, private dining, bath, and staff were very satisfying... However, the toilet in the room had a urine smell... It was cleaned well, but perhaps it has seeped into the walls? If that issue is resolved, I would love to return.

    The staff provided excellent service.

    When I called for the Shuttle Service from Kinugawa Onsen Station, they came promptly, which was very reassuring. Since it was a weekday, the Ryokan was quiet. I enjoyed a welcome drink, and the staff guided me to my Room with great care. The Room was much more spacious than expected and had an excellent view. The meals were seasonal and delicious, with every dish being enjoyable. The large public bath had plenty of bath towels and skincare products available; it was spacious, clean, and staffed by attentive employees who were approachable for any questions. Recently, many Ryokans require guests to bring their own towels from their Rooms to the public baths and reuse them afterward; however, here I could use everything comfortably without concern. The cost-performance ratio was excellent—this level of service at this price felt almost too good to be true! I plan to become a repeat guest in the future. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Overall, it was great.

    The bathroom offers Albion and Mikimoto shampoos, and you can use DIOR and CHANEL lotions and creams in the dressing room, which is a delight for women. The service provided by the staff was minimal yet sufficient, which was appreciated. Meals were generous in portion size, and they kindly accommodated individual dietary needs. The room was clean with no noticeable dirt or stains. Although it was old, it didn’t bother me. However, some furniture like shelves with unclear purposes might be better removed for safety reasons. Since I rarely visit Nikko, I made a last-minute reservation the day before without much information about the accommodation but felt it turned out to be a great choice. This experience made me think I wouldn’t mind visiting Nikko again!

    The meals and Onsen ...

    The meals and Onsen were excellent. We opted for in-room dining to avoid disturbing others as our one-year-old son tends to get noisy. However, the door was left open the entire time until all the dishes were served, and I believe my son's voice echoed down the hallway. Even though I asked several times to close the door, it was dismissed with comments like "it's difficult while serving food." Despite this, when bringing in dishes, staff repeatedly made remarks such as "his lovely voice echoed through the hallway," which we found very unpleasant. Additionally, water flow in the sink and bathroom was poor, and the hot water was excessively hot, making temperature adjustment challenging. Bathing our son or even washing our hands became a struggle. Overall, we felt dissatisfied with both room quality and staff hospitality.
