All-inclusive with a wonderful bath & sauna
The staff warmly welcomed us at the entrance even though we arrived 30 minutes before check-in, making it easy to leave our car with them. This is a cultural heritage Ryokan. While the building shows its age, the water facilities are impeccably clean. The cave bath and sauna are truly impressive. At the post-bath relaxation area, there is a beer server along with mineral water, milk, and coffee milk available for guests. The Ryokan is very spacious (though slightly complex), but maps placed throughout made navigation easy and stress-free. Meals were deliciously prepared using local ingredients, and we especially enjoyed the "Wasabi Rice" served at breakfast—it was excellent! As for dessert: in the evening, we had homemade milk ice cream with a small piece of melon; in the morning, there was sliced pear. Unfortunately, the melon lacked sweetness and the pear was dry—this was disappointing after such wonderful meals overall. It would be great if they could replace these desserts with some tasty handmade sweets instead. All staff members greeted us warmly throughout our stay. This Ryokan is highly recommended for those looking to relax quietly and leisurely!

We had a wonderful time.
We stayed as a family of three, including our child, for a relaxing getaway. The free snacks and various types of ice pops delighted our child. Adults also enjoyed the all-you-can-drink alcohol, making it a fun experience. The meals were incredibly delicious, and even the late-night rice balls left us feeling full and satisfied throughout the day. The onsen was wonderful, with features like a cave bath and a sauna surrounded by nature—it was truly refreshing. We also used the room bath, but we noticed some residue where the onsen water flowed out—was that mineral deposits? (Apologies for my lack of knowledge.) It might be helpful to provide prior notice about this. Thank you for an amazing time! We look forward to visiting again.

Old but well-maintained and clean.
The service was excellent. I felt that thinner beer glasses provided a better drinking experience. The portion size of the meals was fine, but I thought the quality could be improved considering the price.

The building was magnificent.
Staying in a cultural heritage accommodation was an amazing experience. The scent of incense throughout the facility created a wonderful atmosphere, as if stepping back in time. Although I’m not a fan of all-inclusive services, the availability of water and juice was great. The welcome sweets, salted yokan, were also very delicious. Many staff members were from overseas and their smiles were lovely. While some had beautiful manners down to their fingertips, others provided unclear explanations about dishes or made noise when placing plates on the table, and some seemed inexperienced in serving rice—these inconsistencies and details caught my attention. At checkout, when I bowed and said "Thank you for your hospitality," one male staff member only gave a silent nod in return, which felt disappointing. The send-off was handled by just one female staff member and was the quietest farewell I've experienced among various accommodations. I expected four bath towels per room at such a high-end accommodation but found only two, which was disappointing. However, the room had two or three air conditioners making it very comfortable, and the futon bedding felt great as well. As for meals, I appreciated how sashimi was delicately prepared with decorative cuts—it showed care—and the somen noodles were refreshing and delicious too. Since this is such a wonderful accommodation overall, I hope that future service will better match its beautiful building!

Were your expectations too high?
The reviews were highly rated, and I was looking forward to staying at this luxurious traditional Japanese Ryokan with great expectations. On the day of arrival, it was unfortunately rainy, and since we had to skip our planned sightseeing, we arrived at the entrance around 14:20. Feeling a bit apologetic for being early and unsure about the parking location, we waited for someone to greet us. However, no one came out despite the heavy rain. Hesitant to step out of the car or call out from inside due to the weather, we waited for quite some time before finally calling them on the phone. When someone eventually came out, their first words were not an apology for keeping us waiting in such weather or a welcoming greeting but simply asking for my name. I was genuinely shocked—this kind of customer service is beyond my understanding. There were other instances that made it hard to consider this place as truly first-class. It felt like just an expensive accommodation without much value added emotionally. Since my expectations were high initially, it became difficult to recover from this disappointment. This experience reaffirmed in a negative way how important people are in creating a memorable stay. The building itself, room quality, large communal bathhouse facilities, and hot spring water quality were all excellent and made me glad I visited. Dinner was satisfying; however, breakfast and desserts during both meals left something to be desired. Overall evaluation: This accommodation might suit those who don't mind small details or enjoy drinking plenty of alcohol during their stay. For those who drink less frequently like myself or prefer better value-for-money options through IKYU's time-limited sales promotions—it could be barely acceptable cost-performance-wise if booked at discounted rates. For detail-oriented guests like me though—it feels overpriced; please temper your expectations accordingly. I sincerely hope that historical Ryokans like this can preserve not only their physical aspects but also inherit excellence in hospitality on a personal level moving forward!

We had a wonderful and extraordinary time.
First of all, excellent hospitality. As a registered tangible cultural property, the building has a charming historical atmosphere, but the water facilities have been beautifully renovated. The private open-air bath was spacious, and with the all-inclusive service, everything was absolutely perfect. The meals were also wonderful and allowed us to enjoy the seasonal flavors. If it were closer, I would love to visit each season to try their seasonal cuisine. I also joined a tour and truly felt it was worth participating in. This is an accommodation I would definitely like to visit again!

Family trip, part 2. It might be the first time I was moved by the architecture of a Ryokan.
Stayed for 4 months Finally visited Ochiai Rou. Room: Stayed in the "Yamazakura" room. The large bed that accommodated three of us, including our child, and the private open-air bath were exceptional. Service: The lounge with a fireplace had such a cozy atmosphere that we ended up staying longer than planned. Being all-inclusive, we enjoyed local ice cream, milk pudding, original beer, wine, and snacks to our heart's content. We highly recommend joining the daily building tour—it’s truly impressive to see the staff's skills! Onsen: Both the private bath and the room's bath were incredibly relaxing. And for sauna enthusiasts like me, it was heaven! With its Sauna Shuran ranking recognition, the concept and cold water bath (using river water) were outstanding—probably single digits in temperature depending on the season! It was genuinely refreshing but very cold at times. Dinner: Our child fell asleep just in time for dinner so we could enjoy a quiet meal in a private room at our own pace. The dishes were simple yet meticulously prepared and delicious. Drinks: Thanks to being all-inclusive, we indulged quite a bit! I especially loved their sake selection during meals—the pink-hued "Oze Yuki" sake was delightful! Value for Money: Although this accommodation is not inexpensive by any means, thanks to some discounts this time around it felt worth every penny! All-inclusive made it even better since alcohol costs usually add up for us. Next time we'd love to stay here with three generations of family members together!

I reserved dinner at 19:30 along with my accommodation reservation, but received an email from the accommodation informing me that fireflies could be seen around the stay date. I immediately changed dinner to 17:30. This is an accommodation with excellent attention to detail. The building uses remarkable wood materials that seem to have been chosen for their quality, and the craftsmanship is outstanding. The meals were made with plenty of local ingredients and were both delicious and enjoyable. As for the baths, I felt there was room for improvement in "Tsuki no Yu." I also enjoyed the private "Hoshi no Yu," which was absolutely refreshing. The personal service was excellent; however, while I initially thought it would be more Ryokan-style, it leaned more towards a Hotel style—I would have preferred it to lean slightly more towards a Ryokan experience. The selection of free drinks and light snacks was impressive, and the paid alcohol menu was surprisingly affordable, allowing me to enjoy some drinks as well. Thank you very much!

All or Premium
A truly exceptional experience that satisfies all five senses. Upon arrival, the serene atmosphere and the beauty of the historic architecture immediately stood out. Just stepping inside made me feel like I had entered a different world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The room was spacious with stunning views of lush natural scenery through the windows. Everything was impeccably clean, ensuring a comfortable stay throughout. What impressed me most were the meals and sauna quality. Dinner featured kaiseki cuisine crafted with an abundance of local ingredients—each dish was delicate, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. The chef's dedication shone through in every heartfelt creation. The sauna was equally remarkable, built authentically with a soothing wooden aroma. An outdoor relaxation area allowed for an unparalleled experience listening to the gentle sounds of a nearby stream while unwinding completely. Post-bath refreshments included local drinks and ice cream—a thoughtful touch that left a lasting impression. The staff were incredibly kind, offering warm yet unobtrusive hospitality that put me at ease. This accommodation is highly recommended for anyone looking to escape daily life and fully relax in comfort. It was such an amazing stay that I would love to visit again!

A Wonderful Onsen Accommodation Experience
Both the facility and service are excellent. The only issue is the meals. While they are reasonably delicious, the quality of the meals does not match the high standard of this accommodation. It is unclear who is responsible for the cuisine as there seems to be no head chef overseeing the menu. This accommodation is overall outstanding, but this aspect has room for improvement. I hope to see progress as I would like to stay here again.

The value for money is moderate, but overall it is satisfying.
The bath is excellent. The food is average. For this class, it feels like the cuisine could have more creativity and attention to detail. The service is not bad, but some staff members seem inexperienced or lack attentiveness.

This was my first stay at Ochiairo. My friend also seemed very satisfied as they headed home. It would be wonderful if we could choose between Japanese and Western-style breakfast options. The 5 a.m. walk was incredibly refreshing, and I would love to visit again just for that peaceful time alone.

As expected of a luxury Ryokan.
The service was excellent; however, due to the age of the building, the creaking floor noise was noticeable, especially early in the morning and at night, even from inside the room. Additionally, there was a beehive on the roof of the bath area, and bees would enter when opening the room windows. While it is clear that nature is being valued, a lack of maintenance stood out. Considering a price of 100,000 yen per night, proper measures such as garden upkeep (including removing fallen leaves) and beehive removal are expected. That said, overall it lived up to its reputation as a luxury ryokan with satisfying quality deserving a passing grade.

Relax and unwind at your own pace.
As expected of a tangible cultural property! The atmosphere was wonderful as soon as we stepped inside. It was spacious and felt a bit like a maze (haha). The lounge was also lovely and provided a relaxing space, though it was slightly dim. The cave-style bath had a great ambiance and was particularly charming. The meals were not overly abundant but tasted delicious!

In one word, it was ...
In one word, it was disappointing. Firstly, despite informing the arrival time, no staff came out to greet us. When they finally appeared, there was no apology for the wait; instead, they acted as if they had been there all along. During dinner, we were attended by a foreign staff member who struggled with Japanese. The explanation of the dishes was barely understandable and the menu items were quite repetitive. After check-in, we visited the bath and returned again after dinner only to find used towels overflowing and the heater in the changing room turned off. The most disappointing part was the timing of our anniversary cake presentation. We had requested it to be served during dinner (confirmed via email exchange a day prior), but even after finishing our meal, it didn’t arrive until we had to ask about it ourselves. Why should we have to confirm something that was meant as a surprise? This has never happened at any other accommodation we've stayed at before—it’s truly regrettable. There are countless small issues I could point out. While having foreign staff is not an issue in itself, since Japanese staff were present too, I would have preferred being attended by someone fluent in Japanese—this is my honest opinion. As for meals, I think reconsidering the menu would be beneficial—was tempura and kakiage really necessary together? Couldn’t there have been more variety in preparation methods? Regarding baths, more frequent cleaning might improve things. The accommodation itself is truly wonderful; however, honestly speaking, I don’t feel it matched its price point. Perhaps my expectations were too high because this was an accommodation I’d long wanted to visit and finally got a chance to experience. I hope you take this feedback as just one perspective among many others!

The best accommodation I've stayed at in recent years.
We stayed at the accommodation with our family during Golden Week. Our visit was both for a Golden Week trip and to celebrate our daughter's birthday, and we received kind and attentive service from the time of booking. We are also grateful for accommodating changes in the number of guests about 10 days prior to our stay. Upon arrival, we were impressed by the excellent hospitality, baths, and meals. The food was not only delicious but also served at just the right timing, allowing us to enjoy a very pleasant dining experience. All staff members were friendly and provided courteous service with smiles. Additionally, we were moved by the historical architecture of the building. If I may point out one thing, at Tengu no Yu bathhouse, I felt that having sauna chairs next to the open-air bath made it slightly inconvenient in terms of flow lines, and as it is a rock bath, there was some instability when entering or exiting.

This time, the Room is Ukifune.
I previously stayed in the "Aoi" room and was so impressed with the Ochiai-ro experience that I decided to return. I learned that each room has a different design and atmosphere, so this time I chose "Ukifune," which seems to be a popular room. The room was spacious, featuring both Japanese and Western styles, with beautiful stained glass in the bedroom. The Japanese-style room had an engawa (veranda), where enjoying herbal tea in the morning was delightful. The open-air bath had bamboo blinds fully covering it, though insects were present as expected in such settings. The lounge offering drinks, including alcohol, is a wonderful touch. Especially during colder seasons, sitting by the fireplace with a drink is simply perfect for those who enjoy alcohol. The meals are seasonal and refined in taste; both meat and fish dishes were delicious—everything was exceptional! The staff members are very friendly and polite, even though many of them are from overseas. I'm already looking forward to deciding which room to stay in next!

Second Stay
This was my second stay. No matter when I stay, I can relax and spend time at ease throughout the Accommodation. The meals are very delicious, and the lounge selection is excellent. The only issue was that I could hear noise from the floor above; I preferred the Ukifune Room where I stayed last time. Everything in the Accommodation is kept clean, and the garden view from the Room is well maintained, making for a very pleasant stay. I will visit again. Thank you very much.

We had a wonderful two-day stay.
We stayed here to celebrate my husband's birthday. With our 0-year-old son, it was our first time staying at a Ryokan, and we were a bit nervous. However, the staff's thoughtful care and the excellent facilities of Ochiai Rou allowed us to relax and enjoy our stay with peace of mind. Personally, I found the entrance gate and being guided after taking off our shoes at the entrance very special. It felt extraordinary yet gave me a sense of comfort as if returning home. The no-shoes policy also provided a safe space for my son to crawl around freely, which was very helpful. We stayed in March when it was still quite cold, but the underfloor-heated tatami mats were incredibly cozy. Outside, we could see plum trees blooming, giving us a sense of spring's arrival—a truly delightful experience. Surrounded by nature like this made me want to visit again during another season. Since my son is still too young to fully appreciate how wonderful this Ryokan is, I would love to return when he’s older so he can enjoy it too. Thank you for your exceptional hospitality—it was an incredibly happy two days!

Traveled in search of quality and received exactly what was expected.
Choosing Ochiai Rou was driven by the desire for a high-quality experience, and the stay fully met those expectations. First, the meals were exquisite. Not only were the ingredients of exceptional quality, but each dish had a profound depth of flavor, making it a dining experience that delighted all five senses. The baths were also outstanding. Both the open-air bath and indoor bath had their own charm, but the sauna was particularly remarkable. Relaxing while gazing at the stunning scenery and then cooling off in a thoughtfully designed cold bath created an extraordinary moment beyond mere refreshment. The room we stayed in was lovely as well. The stained glass decorations left a strong impression, offering soothing beauty that changed with different lighting conditions. Additionally, I was impressed by the selection of soft drinks available in the room. Carefully curated to match the atmosphere of this ryokan, they made moments spent enjoying views from the window feel truly special. I also joined a guided tour within the accommodation, which turned out to be surprisingly fascinating and exceeded my expectations. Learning about its history and architectural charm added even more depth to my stay. This was an incredibly satisfying experience befitting a journey seeking excellence. I look forward to visiting again!

Luxurious moments to relax and unwind
We stayed as a family and found the space to be absolutely wonderful and relaxing. The lounge was lovely, and the Room was spacious with an indoor bath where we could enjoy the garden view while soaking, which made us very satisfied. Above all, the sauna was exceptional. With no clocks in the bath area and being surrounded by nature, it truly felt like blissful time. There were other guests as well, but everyone seemed to be enjoying their time peacefully. Even though we had moments of noise with our children, others kindly interacted with us, making it feel like a place filled with considerate people. The meals featured seasonal ingredients that allowed us to experience the flavors of the season; we'd love to visit again during another season to enjoy different dishes!

A nostalgic and comfortable cultural heritage accommodation.
As you step into the entrance of the ryokan, adorned with freshly replaced light green noren curtains, you are greeted by seasonal flowers, marking the beginning of a nostalgic and comfortable stay. The noren is changed seasonally, and the meal menu also varies accordingly. I enjoyed four different baths: a private open-air bath, an in-room hot spring bath with natural flowing water, a cave bath, and a large public bath. Alongside delicious meals, it was truly refreshing. Although I don't drink alcohol myself, my friend enjoyed wine and sake. My favorite dish from dinner was the beef and Japanese parsley soup bowl. The changing seasons seem to bring new discoveries in both scenery and cuisine; I would love to visit again during another season. Since I traveled by train, I greatly appreciated the shuttle service provided. The cultural heritage tour was very educational—I can imagine how challenging it must be to maintain such treasures. When being shown to my room, the staff mentioned how much they personally loved that room as well—it made me even more excited for my stay ahead! Thank you for your hospitality!

Simply the best
Everything was perfect. The level of the building registered as a cultural property, the hospitality, service, impeccable cleanliness in every corner, excellent hot spring quality, and the amazing bath facilities—everything exceeded my expectations. I was truly amazed. Coming from a famous Ryokan in Atami FF with high-quality standards that I personally loved, this Ryokan was so exceptional that it overshadowed my previous stay. Honestly, it was so wonderful that I wanted to keep it a secret just to come back soon myself. However, since everyone at Ochiai Rou is working so hard, I wanted to show my appreciation by writing this review (or clicking?). Thank you very much! Next time I'll try staying in one of your private villa rentals. Looking forward to it!

Ukifune (Stained Glass/Open-Air Bath) & Tent Sauna
The room, sauna/tent sauna, onsen, meals, facility tour, and other services provided an exceptional experience. The uniquely designed saunas that blend with nature were particularly impressive. The bottled milk after the onsen was a delightful touch. The meals were also incredibly delicious. I would love to stay again when the color of the noren changes. Thank you very much!

The Sweetness of Doing Nothing
In Italian, there is a phrase "Dolce far niente," which translates to "The sweetness of doing nothing." In English, there is an expression "Stop and smell the roses." While the meanings differ, the essence feels similar. This Ryokan was the perfect place to take a deliberate journey and spend serene moments surrounded by kindness. A place where you can find inspiration and creativity essential for life. I would love to visit again.

An accommodation you'll want to visit again and again.
This was our fourth stay, and it was another wonderful experience. Passing through the seasonal noren curtain, we were greeted with warm service and the soothing scent of incense. The underfloor heating and heaters kept us cozy even in the middle of winter, and since no footwear is needed inside, it’s a comfortable space for both adults and children while enjoying the historic atmosphere. Our one-year-old son happily toddled around freely. The shared lounge is conveniently located nearby, offering an all-inclusive experience with sparkling wine, regular wine, beer, juices, ice cream, local puddings, and more to enjoy at your leisure. This time we stayed in a room called "Akane" on the first floor (a thoughtful arrangement for families with young children), which made our stay stress-free as always. The view from the window was stunning; the private bath and fluffy wide futons were absolutely perfect! We enjoyed a cave-style Onsen with our 5-year-old daughter at a leisurely pace—it felt like having it all to ourselves most of the time! My husband took turns watching over the kids so that we could each fully enjoy both Onsen baths and saunas. The meals are something we look forward to every visit. This time’s highlights included a meat-based soup dish as well as grilled tilefish with crispy scales—both were exceptional! The kids' menu offered satisfying plates for little ones while even providing rice, miso soup, and dessert (customized to just fruit) for those without meal plans. After dinner entertainment included air hockey games or music in their recreation room before tucking into soft futons where everyone slept soundly—while adults alternated between relaxing baths & quiet drinks back inside rooms afterward too! Morning began w/ delicious breakfast alongside private-bath soak sessions again followed by coffee sipped leisurely within lounges prior departure moments wherein warmed shoes awaited outside entrances ensuring final touches reflecting utmost hospitality throughout stays overall thanks towards kind-hearted staff attentiveness paired alongside excellent facilities plus delectable cuisine altogether creating cherished family memories indeed!
