We were very satisfied and will visit again.

I was extremely satisfied with my stay—everything from the building and the Onsen to the lounge. I definitely hope to visit again. There was a manga corner with lots of classic Showa-era comics, and the lounge offered a variety of drinks, so from soaking in the Onsen to dining and spending the evening, everything was wonderful. This may come down to personal preference, but Tengu-no-Yu is mixed-gender and allows both men and women to enter wearing rental swimsuits, which made it great for enjoying as a family. The open-air bath where you can see the spot where two rivers “meet”—the origin of the name Ochiairo—was fantastic. I don’t usually use saunas much, but this one was clean with great views, so I tried it this time. The meals were delicious as well. Younger guests might find the portions slightly small, but for me (just under 40) they were perfect. The only reason I’m taking off one star is that the ayu was very bitter (though I understand ayu innards are naturally bitter, so it’s simply a matter of taste). Thank you very much to all of your staff. I would love to return again soon.

    Excellent.

It had been a while since my last stay at Ochiairo, and I was truly moved by how wonderful the dinner was. From fresh sweetfish tempura and eel sushi to game fowl soup, thick shiitake mushrooms, crispy cutlassfish, and seasoned somen served in an ice bowl with nori—each dish was exceptional. The Onsen was also very enjoyable, with gentle mildly alkaline water. I especially appreciated the wide selection of drinks available not only in the lounge but also in the Room refrigerator and even by the bath area—such thoughtful care to prevent dehydration. Finally, at checkout we received a coupon booklet for the Shuzenji Toll Road. This has been a long-standing service, but I was impressed again by such attentive hospitality. It is an inconvenient road where ETC cannot be used for some reason, so this was very helpful. I would love to stay at Ochiairo again to relax—everything from the Onsen and meals to the service is outstanding.

    I’ll definitely stay here again.

This was my third visit. I was pleasantly surprised that the meals were even better than when I stayed four years ago. I also truly appreciated your careful attention to my allergies. I was also happy that the new thermal spring has been added, and I enjoyed bathing there many times with my child. I will definitely return, but I would appreciate improvements in the following areas: - The chairs at Tengu-no-Yu are quite worn out, and one chair was completely broken, so please replace them. - After breakfast, when I asked for a drink, I was directed to the lounge. It would be great if drinks could also be served in the dining area. Thank you for your consideration.

    This is my second time.

This was my second stay since last July. Last time was a bit disappointing, so I didn’t think I would return, but IKYU had a very good-value Plan, and I wanted to give it another try with an open mind. In the end, I felt the same as last time: it is highly recommended for those who want to enjoy the sauna, those who want to drink plenty of alcohol, and those who want to experience a bit of the atmosphere of a traditionally styled Accommodation. While there are parts I like, there are also aspects that feel somewhat lacking. My conclusion is that I would consider returning only if there were another deal with similar value. The main reason is pricing. At regular rates, Ochiairo is unquestionably in the luxury category—around JPY 200,000 per night for two adults. Compared with other Accommodations in the same price range: - The staff are polite on the surface, but there are areas that do not feel commensurate with the price; service is clearly weak. - Regarding the sauna setup: all water from the shower next to the tea-room sauna flows into the cold bath. Also, because swimwear is required in the renovated thermal spring area, you cannot properly wash your body there; guests therefore need to wash in their Room bath or at the public bath before using it. Including concerns about how cleanly swimwear is managed, it left me feeling uneasy—in my case, I preferred how it was before. - There are no clocks in either the building or Rooms. When I asked a staff member why, I was told it was “to help you enjoy an escape from everyday life.” If so, do you really need such a large TV placed in front of/within what should be an alcove? With such a beautiful building and Rooms full of character, wouldn’t seasonal flowers or hanging scrolls be more fitting? When I looked around carefully throughout the property expecting this kind of touch, there were flowers only near the entrance and none elsewhere. For an Accommodation in this category—and especially one with traditional architecture—that felt underwhelming. Focusing on saunas and all-inclusive offerings may be easy for many guests to appreciate at first glance, but even something as simple as displaying a single flower can convey hospitality. The absence of that kind of care—together with service overall—may be why things feel lacking at a fundamental level. For guests staying with expectations of a luxury Accommodation: if you don’t find value in saunas or in light snacks and drinks included on-site (and they are limited), you may feel parts do not justify the price and that overall value for money is poor.

This is an Accommodation I’d love to stay at again.

This was my first stay here. I enjoyed the quiet Room and the Onsen. Dinner might feel a bit small for some men, but it was just the right amount for me and I was satisfied. The in-house tour was also very informative. It helped me understand how carefully this historic building was constructed and how well it has been cared for. I would definitely like to visit again in a different season.

Outstanding service! Wishing the meals better luck next time...

The Accommodation is designated as a cultural property, and as someone who loves retro style, I was completely satisfied!! The service was truly exceptional hospitality, and I was able to spend a very pleasant, luxurious time. Thank you very much. However, the meals were neither particularly good nor bad, which was a bit disappointing. Given the price, I would have liked to see a bit more effort. The Onsen also had a wonderful open-air bath, but it was mixed bathing while wearing bathing garments. This may be nice for couples, but having shared bathing garments cling to your skin wasn’t comfortable. If possible, since the indoor bath is not great, I would be happy if the two open-air baths could be used on an alternating schedule.

An Accommodation you’ll want to return to.

With such a distinctive variety of rooms, it’s exciting to decide which one to stay in next time. Dinner was also very delicious and served in just the right portion size, and on both nights we were completely satisfied with the added salted rice balls. I only wish it were a little closer...

An Accommodation where you can relax every time you visit, with quality time that flows gently

This is my favorite Accommodation, and I have stayed here several times. Each visit offers the same calm, relaxing atmosphere, allowing me to truly unwind. Although the building has a strong sense of history, the interior is kept very clean, making for a comfortable stay. Everywhere you go, it is quiet and peaceful, and I was able to forget about everyday life. The meals were delicious, and you can tell each dish is carefully prepared. The lounge was also very cozy—a wonderful space where you can enjoy a leisurely time. It is an Accommodation I want to return to again and again—one I truly cherish.

    This was my second s...

This was my second stay, but my first since the Onsen became mixed-gender, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. As expected, soaking in the Onsen while wearing a T-shirt or similar felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable, and I couldn’t fully relax. To be honest, I would have preferred separate hours for men and women. This may be intended for international guests, but I don’t think it suits Japanese guests in particular. The Room was warm with great Facility features including underfloor heating, and the service was excellent—I was very satisfied. I was also looking forward to the meals, but dinner lacked a sense of luxury, and breakfast was simpler than expected and not especially memorable. I wish there had been at least one standout item such as high-quality dried fish. Because it is such a good Ryokan, I hope the meals will be improved with a bit more creativity.

Staying at a Registered Tangible Cultural Property Accommodation is truly wonderful.

I made a Reservation because I wanted to spend my 65th birthday at Ochiairo. It was so beautiful and wonderful that it was hard to believe the building is 150 years old. However, it was completely dark on the way to the bath, and I couldn’t see where I was stepping, which felt scary. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, but they felt a little light.

An Accommodation that makes you want to come back again

We stayed for one night as a family of three to celebrate a birthday. I had wanted to visit this Accommodation for some time after seeing it featured on social media. We visited during the colder season, but we never felt chilly—not only in our Room, but even while walking through the hallways. Every part of the Room had underfloor heating, which made it extremely comfortable. The interior was wonderful as well, with kilim rugs and other touches, and there was a gentle, pleasant incense fragrance throughout the building that made us feel at ease. Both the large public bath and the bath in our Room were very relaxing and impressively clean. The food was also delicious. The tableware had great style too, which made everything taste even better. We listened to records in a retro Room, enjoyed tea while watching the fireplace, played table tennis and billiards in the game room, took a walk across the suspension bridge, watched movies in our Room, and thanks to the kindness of all the staff, we were able to truly unwind. It became our favorite Accommodation out of anywhere we have stayed so far. It was such a wonderful stay that we would love to return again.

A cultural heritage stay where you can lose track of time—an Accommodation of tranquility, healing, and exquisite cuisine.

I had been looking forward to this for a long time, and from the moment I arrived it felt like another world. The Ryokan’s unique, wonderful atmosphere and the calm check-in at the lounge immediately lifted my spirits. The all-inclusive alcoholic drinks (wine and sake) were of higher quality than expected, and I thoroughly enjoyed them from the lounge through dinner. I was also happy that drinks were available throughout the property, including by the Onsen. The in-house tour was great—I appreciated learning about Ochiairo’s history and architectural details. I enjoyed the in-room Onsen as well, but the public bath with its Onsen and sauna was exceptional; relaxing while looking out at the river and trees was truly wonderful. For both dinner and breakfast we were shown to lovely private dining rooms, and everyone’s service was excellent. As for the food, I was disappointed that the chicken liver assortment I ordered separately looked different from the website photos, but the Basque cheesecake included in our Plan was delicious. This is a Ryokan that made me want to come back for a Multiple Night Stay.

    Excellent

Although it is a historic building, this Accommodation is well cleaned and very comfortable to stay in. The meals, made with local ingredients, were also delicious. In particular, the turnip rice cooked in a pot was fragrant and brought out the natural sweetness of the turnip. When we checked out, we also appreciated the thoughtful touch of having our shoes set up so they were easy to put on.

An Accommodation for sauna lovers—for better or worse

This was an Accommodation I’d wanted to stay at for a long time. The service was courteous, and the building had a charming atmosphere. It’s all-inclusive, and food and drinks in the lounge are free. There are two large public baths that rotate between men, women, plus another large public bath that both men and women can use with bathing wear, which was great for our family. What disappointed me was that the Accommodation heavily promotes its sauna. When you open the guidebook, the very first page is about something called “Sa-dou,” and it seemed like many guests were there for that purpose. No matter when I went to the large public bath, it was always crowded. Also, there were many poorly mannered “sauna users,” who would get into the bath dripping with sweat after the sauna without rinsing off first, which felt unpleasant. It wasn’t just one or two people—at least all four people I saw did this—so it’s not really the Accommodation’s fault, but it left me feeling conflicted. Apparently there were hardly any users on the women’s side though, so maybe we were just unlucky. The meals were tasty and in appropriate portions. They weren’t exceptionally delicious—more like “pretty good”—so maybe my expectations were too high. For children’s meals, having hamburg steak as the main dish for both dinner and breakfast in a row felt very lazy. In the in-room bath, when soaking in the tub, water droplets from the ventilation fan drip right around head/shoulder level, which seems like a design issue. The service is good and overall it’s a nice Accommodation, so even if small details bothered me, it’s still a place I’d like to visit again.

We highly recommend our in-house tour!

Founded in 1874, this historic Ryokan has hosted many renowned authors, including Yasunari Kawabata. I’d been curious about it for a long time, and this time I finally got to visit for the first time! The Reviews were great so my expectations were high, but the cuisine, service, and Facilities were all flawless—truly even better than I had hoped. I heard the Accommodation is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and they offered a 30-minute guided tour of the building with explanations, so I joined. Even to an untrained eye, everything was stunningly crafted; and by hearing the explanations, I was able to learn about the background and history and better appreciate how special it is. It made my stay even more enjoyable. If you’re staying here, I highly recommend joining the in-house tour. A short trip from the Ryokan will take you to Jogasaki Coast, Mount Omuro, or Numazu Port, but nearby sightseeing spots you can enjoy right around the area are probably limited to Joren Falls. That said, there were also a small table tennis setup, arcade-style game tables, and a manga corner on-site—so we never felt bored. The swing across the suspension bridge on the grounds was also unexpectedly fun (in a good way). And since it’s an all-inclusive Accommodation, we could relax in the lounge at our leisure while enjoying drinks. If I had to mention one thing: I would have been even happier if the lounge coffee were individually brewed per cup. It’s truly a wonderful Accommodation—I’d love to return in another season. Thank you very much.

    Unfortunately.

The historic building was wonderful. I did not use the sauna because the door was unstable and I felt it might trap me inside. In the dining area, staff were running in slippers, creating loud footsteps. It was very noisy, and I wished to dine in a quieter place. For dinner, the sashimi and tempura were carelessly plated, as if prepared by someone unfamiliar with Japanese cuisine. There was no coffee available in the lounge after breakfast. Considering that this accommodation cost me a significant amount of money, I felt it did not meet its value for the price paid.

    Impressed by the bamboo chopsticks

The room, bath, and meals all exceeded expectations, but the chopsticks used during the meal were particularly impressive. Made of bamboo, they had a perfect balance of weight and thickness, making it easy to pick up food. As an all-inclusive accommodation, I enjoyed reading a book in the lounge while having multiple refills of wine. The male staff who provided shuttle service to the accommodation and the female staff who guided me through the room were both very pleasant. This has become my top choice for a ryokan to visit again.

    We had a great time.

Enjoyed the onsen, sauna, lounge, manga room, and massage. The service was much better this time compared to my previous stay at this accommodation. Since I spent little time in the room, I chose the most affordable option this time. While the amenities and water facilities were excellent, there were reasons for its affordability such as having only one power outlet and a noisy air conditioner. Although I usually prefer a bed, I stayed with futons this time and found them even more comfortable than the bed from my previous stay despite using similar linens. Next time, I'd like to try a different room with futons laid out differently. I love onsen saunas but was slightly disappointed that my favorite Tengu no Yu became mixed-gender bathing.

The Important Cultural Property was magnificent.

The accommodation had a good reputation and high rates, so perhaps my expectations were too high. The important cultural property building was very beautiful and impressive. The interior had a charming atmosphere and felt pleasant. Was it because we stayed in the most affordable room? Having stayed at many accommodations before, I was disappointed to find this one had the worst service I've ever experienced. As an "all-inclusive" accommodation, we ordered drinks several times during our meal. However, on the third order, the drink menu was silently taken away without any explanation. Isn't it strange to remove the menu without saying anything at an "all-inclusive" establishment? From that moment on, the meal left a bad impression, and our stay afterward was extremely unpleasant. We used the lounge extension as part of a Diamond benefit but received no send-off upon departure. While I understand that maintaining such a building incurs costs, I believe this accommodation falls short in terms of hospitality standards.

    Third time

This is my third visit in three consecutive years. Even in early winter, the greenery of Central Izu was still abundant. While there were traces of autumn leaves and bare branches, this must be the essence of "early winter in Central Izu." It was my first time visiting since the addition of the private accommodation "Shakunage." Of course, I didn’t stay at Shakunage (sweat). The main changes included modifications to the large public bath area, the addition of a sauna, a newly established nostalgic manga corner, and most notably, the removal of an abandoned building across the river. The cleared site now allows for strolling and offers new perspectives to view the accommodation. The meals were as perfect for me as ever; I thoroughly enjoyed them again this time. I also felt that some service issues from my previous visit had been improved. If I had to point out something minor, perhaps more staffing around the lounge area could be considered? While it’s nice not having staff constantly visible when relaxing peacefully, insufficient maintenance or replenishment might detract from its "luxury" reputation. On a personal note, it’s unfortunate that “Tengu no Yu” has become mixed bathing—it feels like people my age are effectively excluded (sweat). As for the newly added sauna at Hoshi no Yu... well, given its simple construction, expectations should remain modest—but it would have been nice if towels and other amenities were arranged similarly to Tsuki no Yu. One regret is not being able to use the newly established manga corner due to time constraints during my one-night stay. Next time I'd love to plan a Multiple Night Stay! (sweat)

The hot spring water is excellent.

The water was gentle and very pleasant. The mixed-gender large open-air Onsen was incredibly relaxing. It was my first time staying at an all-inclusive accommodation at an Onsen, and it was great value as everything, including dinner, came with unlimited drinks. However, the lounge was crowded and lacked a calm atmosphere, which was disappointing. There were times when no staff were present at the counter, leading to shortages of items and some inconvenience. Dinner had excellent quality and quantity, but breakfast felt lacking.

I stayed at the same Ryokan for the first time.

We visited in March previously, and my husband (a sauna enthusiast) loved Ochiairou so much that we stayed again in October, just six months later. This is the first time we've revisited a Ryokan within such a short period. (There are many things we love about Ochiairou, but one of my favorites is the p/d brand cosmetics provided as amenities—they feel amazing to use.) This time, visiting in autumn, we enjoyed strolling through the slightly autumn-colored garden—it was truly refreshing. Having visited in spring and autumn, we'd love to come back during summer and winter as well. During this visit, we ran out of diapers for our son and explained the situation to reception. They immediately offered swim diapers as an alternative and brought them to us within five minutes! I was filled with worry and guilt at first, but the female staff member who assisted us had such a warm smile that I felt completely at ease. Thank you so much for your kindness at that moment. We've traveled with children many times before but have never found another Ryokan or Hotel where we could stay so comfortably and peacefully like Ochiairou. I'm sure we'll continue to revisit in the future. Thank you for two unforgettable days!

Luxury Accommodation for Social Media Appeal and International Guests

This accommodation, which has received a Michelin Key and Sauna Shuran award, had been on my radar for some time. While I have stayed at accommodations in a similar price range before, this stay cost 250,000 yen for two people and was by no means inexpensive. Unfortunately, the high expectations I had made the shortcomings more noticeable. First, the meals. The flavors were generally on the stronger side, lacking luxury or creativity, and it was hard to say they matched the price point. During dinner, drink orders were repeatedly forgotten, and explanations of dishes by staff were insufficient. In the lounge area, possibly due to understaffing, tables were left uncleared at times making it difficult to find seating. Coffee was not replenished either, leading many guests to give up entirely. Having staff present could have made for a more comfortable experience. During turndown service in our room, curtains were closed for us; however part of one curtain remained detached from its rail and was left as is. It made me chuckle wryly thinking "This level of service at this price?" That day there were many international guests staying as well; in the public bath area certain behaviors stood out—such as entering tubs without rinsing off first or leaving showerheads running unnecessarily when no one was using them nearby. While cultural differences are understandable perhaps clearer reminders from management would help address such issues better. The most frustrating incident occurred after checkout regarding forgotten items: we received notice about an item left behind but upon rushing back within 30 minutes discovered it belonged instead to another guest’s room! Although apologies followed there wasn’t much acknowledgment towards time/effort spent returning unnecessarily (raising questions around coordination between cleaning teams). On brighter notes though—the building itself being designated an Important Cultural Property exuded charm beautifully complemented through guided tours sharing insights into its history/design elements which proved fascinating overall. Our room’s bed provided great comfort while sauna facilities lived up fully delivering relaxation especially with cold baths drawing directly from river water—a highlight indeed! (However structural concerns arose seeing post-tea-room-sauna showers draining directly into said cold baths.) Despite undeniable architectural allure overall service quality fell short relative pricing leaving me unlikely inclined toward revisiting honestly speaking. It felt tailored more toward social media appeal/international visitors rather than embodying traditional hospitality expected under Michelin Key-awarded luxury ryokan standards—a disappointment given initial hopes placed therein.

    The meals were especially excellent.

The dining area has a cozy atmosphere with dimmed lighting. Each dish served felt carefully selected and well-prepared. Many of the staff serving us were Asian foreigners, but they were all kind, polite, and well-mannered, clearly reflecting the Ryokan's excellent training. Additionally, we were impressed as a couple by the flavor, stickiness, and moisture of the freshly cooked rice at breakfast—wishing we could enjoy it every morning!

Stay in a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for a Unique Experience

Join a cultural heritage tour and discover the various wonders of Ochiai-ro. This building is truly a precious treasure that should be preserved for future generations. Staying at the accommodation after learning about it through the tour allows you to feel its charm on a deeper level. While words cannot fully capture its magnificence, it is something you must experience firsthand to truly understand. I am determined to visit again someday. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to the master carpenters of that time, the founder, and everyone who continues to preserve and protect this legacy today.

The sparkling wine in the lounge was flat in both bottles. The bathroom renovation in the room felt a bit cheap. The view from the bath was of tin roofs. It would have been nice to have an extra set of towels. Cleaning could have been more thorough. Since I booked at a low price, check-in was late, and check-out was early, making it a rushed stay. If you're focused on the well-equipped sauna facilities, it might be worth it, but cleaning trash bins and ashtrays more frequently would leave a better impression. Despite these criticisms, the cultural heritage tour provided an intellectually stimulating and enjoyable experience for adults, so overall it was fine! :) Also, the foreign female staff member always had a smile and left a very positive impression!

    All-inclusive with a wonderful bath & sauna

The staff warmly welcomed us at the entrance even though we arrived 30 minutes before check-in, making it easy to leave our car with them. This is a cultural heritage Ryokan. While the building shows its age, the water facilities are impeccably clean. The cave bath and sauna are truly impressive. At the post-bath relaxation area, there is a beer server along with mineral water, milk, and coffee milk available for guests. The Ryokan is very spacious (though slightly complex), but maps placed throughout made navigation easy and stress-free. Meals were deliciously prepared using local ingredients, and we especially enjoyed the "Wasabi Rice" served at breakfast—it was excellent! As for dessert: in the evening, we had homemade milk ice cream with a small piece of melon; in the morning, there was sliced pear. Unfortunately, the melon lacked sweetness and the pear was dry—this was disappointing after such wonderful meals overall. It would be great if they could replace these desserts with some tasty handmade sweets instead. All staff members greeted us warmly throughout our stay. This Ryokan is highly recommended for those looking to relax quietly and leisurely!
