    The food was delicious.

    A few years ago, when I stayed at this Ryokan, I felt the cuisine was not up to par for a Ryokan of this class, and since then, I hadn't returned. However, my son recently returned to Japan and expressed his desire to stay at a traditional Japanese Ryokan. So we decided to visit again. The space remains as beautiful as ever with the serene atmosphere unique to traditional Japanese architecture. But what stood out most this time was the food. As soon as we started eating, I couldn't help but ask if there had been a change in the head chef—it turns out there had been! The meals were absolutely delicious. Maintaining such a large traditional Japanese building must be quite challenging on its own, but I believe that great cuisine is also essential for an accommodation like this. This time, both our room and meals exceeded expectations—I was thoroughly satisfied! My son also commented that "this place has a special aura," and seeing him so pleased made me happy too. Although some old buildings along the road have been demolished, slightly affecting the view from the Onsen with a more barren look now, I'm excited to see how things will evolve in the future. While it's not an accommodation we can visit frequently, I'd love to stay here again someday—thank you very much. One downside was that our neighboring room continued making loud noises past 1 AM; it was quite bothersome. Given it's a traditional Japanese house structure, I'd appreciate it if guests could maintain quiet during nighttime hours...

    We had a relaxing and enjoyable time, but...

    The shuttle service, fireplace lounge, facility explanations, large public bath with sauna, and all-inclusive experience were excellent. The variety of drinks during meals often tempts me to overindulge and miss the bath, disrupting my evening plans. However, the simple menu here allowed me to enjoy drinks moderately and fully appreciate the night sauna—very satisfying. One disappointment was that the relaxation chairs at Tsuki no Yu were placed on gravel, making it uncomfortable to relax. It would be great if wooden boards or similar could be placed next to the chairs to keep feet clean.

    Paradise in Izu

    Ochiai Rou, a charming Ryokan registered as a tangible cultural property. While preserving its traditional architecture, it has been renovated to be both user-friendly and modern. The lounge, centered around a massive fireplace, offers exceptional comfort. With free-flow service, you can enjoy craft beer and wine anytime—especially cozy at night. Dinner is served in private rooms with Japanese Kaiseki cuisine. The accommodation fee includes an all-inclusive plan with unlimited drinks, including alcohol. Every dish is delicious, but the combination of Hamana Lake seaweed with shirako and oysters was outstanding. They even prepared rice balls at the end of the meal for us to enjoy a second round in our room's free-flow setting. Breakfast is served on a single plate. Compared to dinner and the accommodation fee, it feels slightly underwhelming—perhaps due to portion size or presentation. There are two types of large baths with gender-swapping schedules: one features a simple bathhouse and stylish tea room sauna; the other offers a cave-style bath and flowing water sauna. Overall, the latter is preferable but can feel slightly chilly due to its cave structure—something to keep in mind. Either way, you can indulge in an unparalleled relaxation experience under a star-filled night sky. Our one-night stay was truly wonderful! We look forward to returning during warmer weather next time.

    Accommodation that incorporates tradition with creativity

    For over 30 years, this landmark served as a shortcut from Central Izu to Western Izu, but with recent road changes, it is no longer on the route. This was my first stay at this accommodation. The building is old but has been cleverly renovated with thoughtful interior design. In the hallways, there were areas that felt cold and others that were warm. Being a wooden structure, sounds from the upper floors were quite noticeable. On a particularly cold day, the private open-air bath was incredibly spacious and relaxing for long soaks—an absolute highlight! However, the stones leading to the bath were extremely cold and uncomfortable to walk on. The room had underfloor heating which made it very comfortable to stay in; perhaps some similar measures could be considered for the bath area? Dinner featured teppanyaki and was outstanding in both quality and quantity—freshly grilled dishes made it even better! Breakfast was also delicious with just the right portion size. This is definitely an accommodation I would love to visit again!

    Lovely Onsen Accommodation

    I stayed with my parents, making it a group of three! The much-anticipated Tengu Hot Spring was incredibly relaxing and helped us unwind from our travels. My parents, who recently celebrated their 60th birthdays, were delighted and said it was wonderful. Despite the last-minute request on the day of our stay, thank you so much for preparing a celebratory message plate for us. The guided tour of the facility and the underground game area are must-sees, so I recommend arriving early to enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities! We will definitely visit again.

    I was able to show my gratitude to my parents.

    We visited with my parents to celebrate my mother's 77th birthday. It was truly a wonderful Ryokan, and my parents were overjoyed. I was able to give them a memorable experience. From the Koubai Room, we could admire the fully bloomed red plum blossoms. The Onsen, sauna, lounge services, and the beautifully presented and delicious meals were all exceptional. The staff members, many of whom were from overseas, provided incredibly polite and pleasant service. Thank you very much. What left the biggest impression on us was the cultural heritage tour within the facility. Both my parents and I fell in love with Ochiai Rou. We would love to visit again in a different season!

    Following last summer, I stayed at Ochiai Rou again this time. It truly is a special accommodation that fills the heart with every visit. Upon stepping inside, you are greeted by a pleasant aroma. The warmth of the wood and the refined fragrance blend harmoniously, instantly transporting you to an extraordinary world. In the tranquil flow of time, I felt my heart naturally unwind in the serene atmosphere exuded by the entire accommodation. From my room this time, I could admire red plum blossoms and fully enjoy the winter scenery. The view was different from when I visited in summer, reaffirming that this is an accommodation where you can appreciate seasonal beauty throughout the year. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the onsen. The private bath offered a luxurious space where one could feel both the sound of water and nature's presence amidst silence. Especially remarkable was bathing early in the morning—immersing myself in warm water as sunlight gently streamed into a tub surrounded by crisp air from overnight coldness felt like resetting both body and mind. The softness of the water combined with fresh air created moments of pure bliss. Even in my room’s bath, being able to enjoy hot springs at any preferred time added to continuous relaxation during my stay. The cuisine was another highlight filled with Ochiai Rou’s unique sense of beauty. Each dish showcased seasonal ingredients prepared with meticulous care—not only delicious but also presented thoughtfully through exquisite tableware and plating arrangements. Savoring flavors distinct from summer made me understand why one would want to return each season for its unique tastes. The staff's hospitality remained exceptional as always—the perfect balance between attentiveness and discretion ensured a comfortable stay supported by their thoughtful gestures.     Japanese Cultural Experience

    He came to Japan from overseas for a visit, so we stayed at the historic Property, Ochiai Rou. There were a few disappointments, such as getting the name wrong at the entrance and forgetting to provide drinks even when asked... but he seemed to enjoy himself, so I am satisfied. Thank you very much.

    Onsen and Building Property

    This is a Property where you can enjoy the Onsen and the building, not a Property for enjoying food. It's amazing to be able to reserve such a spacious open-air bath. Participating in the cultural property tour changed my perspective on viewing Ryokan buildings, and I started noticing various details. I realized once again how challenging it is to maintain these buildings. Unfortunately, despite the cold morning, the miso soup was very lukewarm—my first experience of this kind. It was quite disappointing; come to think of it, there wasn't even the chef's name on the dinner menu. However, the rice balls for supper were delicious. There was no staff from Stays upon arrival, which also delayed parking time.

    A one-of-a-kind Ryokan that evolves with every visit.

    I haven't stayed at many Ryokans in my life, but this is definitely my favorite. The historic building is filled with the delicate craftsmanship of the time, and even a small window in the hallway reflects a sense of hospitality and playfulness. The entire building offers a comforting welcome, creating a warm space that makes you want to say "I'm home." The harmonious blend of Japanese and Western styles, history and modernity creates a unique atmosphere that is one of its charms. In such a special space, you can feel meticulous hospitality from the amenities as well. The food is astonishingly delicious every time. I am always moved by the warmth and hospitality of all the staff members. After relaxing in the exquisite sauna and Onsen, rejuvenating both body and mind, enjoy delicious drinks and meals while leisurely conversing in the lounge. Savoring all-inclusive alcohols, snacks, and ice cream makes for an incredibly luxurious and happy time. It's delightful that with Onsen switching between night and morning, you can enjoy different Onsen experiences each morning along with saunas. This Ryokan always makes me want to return every visit; it's very dear to me. My next goal is to bring my family here. I will definitely visit again. Thank you for always providing top-notch hospitality.

    This is my fifth time using it. Both the Onsen and sauna are wonderful, and the meals seem to have become even more delicious. Thank you to the staff for always being so kind. I will visit again.

    I have stayed at many places, but this is the first Property that made me want to visit again so much. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. I will definitely return. It was truly wonderful. The karasumi soba was not on the menu, so I hope to try it next time. Thank you to all the staff.

    It was the best Property.

    All the staff at the Property were very pleasant, and they kindly answered our questions via email even before our stay, allowing us to travel with peace of mind even with children. On the day of our stay, we were delighted by the wonderful Facility, Room, meals, and hospitality that exceeded our expectations, enabling us to enjoy a stress-free and happy time even with a small child. I thought about bringing my parents next time. Thank you for providing such a wonderful trip that makes us want to visit again for sure.

    The pace at which dinner was served on the first night was slow, while on the second night, dinner was served at a very fast pace. For breakfast on the second day, the side dishes were already on the table, but it felt like we waited more than five minutes for the rice, miso soup, and hand towels. I felt that the restaurant might be busy due to a lack of staff. The taste was delicious. I especially enjoyed the outdoor air bath at the Onsen facility, but as someone who frequents saunas in Tokyo, it felt strange not to find a toothbrush and razor.

    Ever since I saw it on TV, I've wanted to stay here! Finally, my stay has come true. From the moment I stepped into the property, a relaxing time began, and I was able to enjoy delicious meals and a comfortable, leisurely time. I would love to visit again.

    A bit disappointing

    We stayed in a room on the upper floor, and there were children staying above us. As soon as we arrived, the sound of children's footsteps was loud and disruptive, which was difficult as we came to relax. It would be appreciated if families with children could be limited to rooms on the first floor. The service upon arrival was very basic, and as it was our first time staying, there were many things we didn't understand, so we would have liked more detailed guidance. If there is an explanation of the property at 10 a.m., we would have liked to be informed of that as well. The bar at night was empty, and it took a while for someone to come out, but we had whiskey for two without any snacks. It would be nice to have a bartender who could engage with us a little. The dinner was excellent, with delicious and heartfelt dishes. This was perfect. The sake flask and cups were so wonderfully crafted that we wanted to buy them. The chopstick rests were unique, and we bought them as souvenirs. We used the cave bath, though I forgot its name. We entered around 6 p.m., but it was so dark that we couldn't see our feet, which I think would be dangerous for the elderly. The quality of the bath's spring was smooth and excellent.

    I had a very pleasant time during my stay. - Room & Amenities The building has a very historical significance. During the tour inside the facility, the details were explained, and I was amazed by the incredible craftsmanship of the carpenters who built it at that time. The explanation was very convincing. Indeed, due to aging, the first impression felt a bit old, but it was very well maintained and had a sufficient sense of cleanliness, making it more comfortable as time went by, and I didn't want to leave. - Hospitality & Service Everyone was very polite. There were moments when they couldn't answer questions during meals, but they served us diligently, and I'm not narrow-minded enough to make a fuss about such things. - Onsen & Bath Both large public baths were good, but the cave bath was very spacious and felt even more pleasant. The room bath was also nice, but since there was an operation panel for the water heater, I thought it was a heated bath for a moment. It would have been nice to reserve the private bath for free. I forgot about the all-inclusive service and mistakenly thought it was paid, so I hesitated. - Facility & Equipment I think they have carefully considered how to make a stay in a historical ryokan comfortable. There was a large TV where you could watch YouTube, as well as table tennis and game consoles. Some people might think it's inappropriate to have such things in a historical ryokan, but personally, I thought it was wonderful how they skillfully blended historical and modern elements. - Meals I imagined it would feel like a high-class restaurant, and indeed, it was just like that, with every dish having a gentle and delicious taste. My family also said it was very delicious, and I was glad we came. The breakfast was just the right amount. It was slightly less than other ryokans, but that way, the meal time wasn't too long, allowing us to spend the precious morning time on other activities like bathing. - Satisfaction As mentioned repeatedly, it was so comfortable that I didn't want to leave. It was unfortunate that the JR delay shortened our precious stay time, but I am glad we came. Thank you very much.

    Only the building is impressive.

    The building, facilities, and equipment were good. However, the service is lacking overall. I think the foreign staff are doing their best, but there are limits. The Japanese staff could also improve their language skills a bit more. Isn't the work too demanding for such a small number of people? It simply doesn't match the price. But to maintain that magnificent building, the price can't be lowered, right? Please find a way to make it work.

    The best Stays of your life!!

    The meals were excellent. I definitely want to have the karasumi soba again next time. The room was very clean and the private Onsen was amazing! Tengu no Yu was also wonderful. We received an explanation of the important cultural property and felt the history. The staff were very kind. The all-inclusive service was perfect, making it a wonderful Ryokan. I definitely want to visit again.

    It was a bit disappointing.

    When I stayed 5 years ago (before the renewal), I was very impressed with the space, meals, and hospitality, all of which were very tasteful, and I thought I would like to stay again someday. However, I felt a decline in overall quality, which was disappointing. Even when arriving by car, no one came at first, and although it may be inevitable due to a lack of staff, there was no staff in the lounge either. The tea snacks in the room were not original or from Izu, but from another region, which made me wonder why. Additionally, the detailed presentation of the meals was lacking, and the taste was ordinary, to be honest. Also, the souvenir corner used to have originality, but now it doesn't, which was disappointing. The cave bath and private bath were still very good.

    Everything was wonderful.

    The private river sauna was reserved in advance and entered at 5 PM on the check-in day. There was a slight drizzle, but the experience was so good that it blew it away. Towels and a cooler box were provided, and drinks there were, of course, all-you-can-drink. The cold bath that you can enter without rinsing your body is indeed nice. It was refreshing. Even at the beginning of October, the river water temperature was not too cold, so we could enter. Both the regular bath and sauna were great. The customer service was excellent in every aspect. There were overseas staff who couldn't speak Japanese fluently, but their efforts were evident, and there was nothing unpleasant. We chose teppanyaki for the meal, and it was also very delicious. It was a property I would like to stay at again.

    It was a wonderful stay.

    The building, furnishings, and tableware all exuded a sense of history and were wonderful, and the Onsen was also amazing. The meals were impeccable, and one night was not nearly enough. I have visited many Stays, but this was the first time I made a Reservation for my next visit on the spot. I plan to stay for two nights in late November, and I am looking forward to the autumn leaves and visiting again. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

    It's really disappointing.

    Perhaps due to the large number of foreign staff, there was a lack of attention to detail from some, such as not having shoes ready at checkout or not assisting with luggage. The meals, Onsen, and Room were perfect, but these issues tarnished the impression of a luxury Ryokan.

    Stylish Retro Ryokan

    The property has a great sense of style, and the unobtrusive service is pleasant. The large public bath with a sauna offers a great sense of activity and is enjoyable. There are many steps, so you need to be careful with your footing, and the overall dimness of the interior might be tough for the elderly. However, I enjoyed moving around the property slowly, savoring the creaking sounds of the corridors and reflecting on its 150-year history. I tended to focus on newly opened stays, but I thought this kind of retro ryokan is also wonderful. The lounge was very relaxing, and the game room and suspension bridge that sparked a sense of adventure were also fun.
