    It’s a long-established place, but it was a bit disappointing.

    A long-established inn in Oku-Yugawara Onsen with 60 years of history, but the building is old. The Rooms and Facilities have been partially renovated, yet they still feel dated and not very functional. The rooftop open-air bath has plenty of space, but the water temperature is either too hot or too lukewarm—no middle ground. The meals are also lacking in both quality and quantity. At this price, it offers neither good value nor satisfaction. Perhaps Japanese guests are not the target audience?

    It was a pleasant stay.

    - The food was outstanding. The course was meticulously crafted, and both the portion size and flavors were perfect. The sashimi with irizake was especially exceptional—my wife raved about it as well. Explanations at serving were kept to the bare minimum, and when needed we could read the detailed menu (a substantial three-page booklet), which conveyed the chef’s philosophy and let us focus on both conversation and the meal. The new building where dinner is served was spotless, and the walkway to the restaurant was decorated with colorful Japanese umbrellas, which really lifted our spirits. Overall, we were highly satisfied. - There are two baths—one on the rooftop and one indoor—used on a rotating schedule. Both were spacious with plenty of room for the number of guests, so we could relax comfortably. The view was also great—excellent overall. - The downside is that our Room felt a bit dated: when we turned on the heater it made a constant rattling noise, one window wouldn’t open, and things like the elevator and automatic doors creaked heavily—hard to say it matched the price point. You can also hear voices from outside quite clearly; however, closing the fire door blocks most of it out. We only noticed this at night, but I wish we had been told during check-in/arrival guidance.

    Thank you for your hospitality. I have two concerns. After using the hair treatment, my hair became unusually dry, so I would appreciate it if you could consider changing the brand or providing hair oil. Also, when switching the observation bath to the women’s time slot, I would be grateful if you could keep hair ties available at all times.

    An Onsen Ryokan in Oku-Yugawara

    I was soothed by the hot springs in Oku-Yugawara. The stars were clearly visible, and I could relax at a leisurely pace. I love saunas and had high expectations, but the temperature wasn’t very high. Even adding 5–6 minutes to my usual 12-minute session, I didn’t feel like I sweated much. Despite that, the cold bath was extremely cold. The meals were served carefully and felt decent overall. You can eat calmly in a semi-private setting. There were some harsh Reviews, but it wasn’t that bad—actually, it was good. It was a bit disappointing that the complimentary beer service ended early.

    I’d love to stay here again.

    The welcome drink selection, including beer, was a nice touch, and the freshly ground coffee available except late at night was delicious. The bath temperature was just right for me, and with amenities provided in the bath area, I could go without bringing anything. I was also satisfied with the food. I would definitely like to visit again.

    The meal times were very disappointing...

    We stayed to celebrate my father’s 60th birthday. I had high expectations after reading the Reviews, but personally there were many moments that left me disappointed. As others have mentioned, perhaps due to renovations and extensions, it was a bit hard to find your way around the building, and it also feels somewhat dated. However, this was stated in advance, and everything was kept very clean, so I have no complaints about the Facility. What disappointed me was the food and the service from the staff member assigned to our table. The dinner appetizer looked and tasted like something you’d expect at breakfast, and the dishes that followed had combinations and flavors that were unfamiliar in a negative way. As for breakfast miso soup, it tasted as if they simply added lots of ingredients but used no dashi—at least that’s how it came across. (It may be an approach where the ingredients themselves are meant to create the broth flavor, but even so, I couldn’t taste much at all.) Honestly, this may be my first time feeling this disappointed with dinner and breakfast at an Onsen Accommodation... Above all else, my entire family felt uncomfortable with the service from our table attendant. Specifically: no smile; no greetings such as “Excuse me”; loudly clattering dishes when placing or clearing them (I’ve never experienced such noisy and rough service at a meal where we paid a certain amount); no response even when we said “please”; visibly annoyed when we asked again about what a dish was...and more. It was hard to understand. We had reserved a cake for my father’s birthday celebration as well, but when it was brought out there wasn’t even a simple “Happy birthday”—it was placed down mechanically, which made us feel awkward. I’ve never written a Review like this before even if I had minor concerns during past stays, but this time I felt compelled to do so. It is fine if this Review is not published; I simply hope it reaches the Accommodation staff appropriately and leads to improvements. That said, we did not feel any discomfort with other staff members’ service practices; there were also positives such as the rooftop open-air bath with a great view and unlimited beer in the lounge (until 6:00 p.m.).     It was a stressful accommodation.

    The 120 m² maisonette at BOUROU NOGUCHI Hakodate, one of Noguchi Kanko’s Accommodations, was excellent. Kitano Kaze Saryo was so-so. Kaiseiro and Sansuiro were not a good fit for me. This was my 320th newly tried Accommodation, and my third trip this year. No Shuttle Service. Even after a week, I never received a reply to my email inquiry, so I had low expectations from the start. Seniors or anyone with limited mobility should be cautious—there are steps everywhere. The dining area, the large public bath, and the panoramic bath all require using stairs. It’s 19 steps up to the panoramic bath. 〇Room A Japanese-Western corner Room on the 8th floor (Jurakudai). As with Kaiseiro, slippers are required even for the refrigerator area and the toilet each time. There is no changing area or shower in the open-air bath area. With such an inconvenient layout, I also questioned whether the water could truly be kept clean, so I didn’t use it even once. Yukata robes, samue loungewear, and bathrobes are provided. The duvet is heavy. Only tea bags were provided; the refrigerator contained water only. 〇Dining Japanese-Western fusion—an odd menu overall. The number of dishes was average. It wasn’t bad, but nothing stood out as especially delicious either. Using an in-house voucher from my Diamond member benefit, I pre-ordered their special abalone steak dish—but it was so small I laughed (it looked more like tokobushi). It was my first time being that disappointed by abalone. There were many kinds of desserts, but they were too sweet to finish them all. The rice and the dried horse mackerel at breakfast were nicely fatty and very tasty. 〇Panoramic Open-Air Bath It’s open and pleasant, but since there is only one location it operates on a men/women rotation schedule. Constantly checking times became tiring. Towels are provided. For that size facility there are only three washing stations indoors and three outdoors—just six total—and seeing a group of eight men made me wonder whether everyone actually washed before entering; because of that I couldn’t fully relax in what should have been a great “sky” open-air bath experience anyway. Even if it were smaller, having separate baths for men and women available at any time might have been better in my view. The post-bath lounge also offered water only. 〇Large Public Bath One section happened to be under maintenance during my stay, so this also ran on a timed men/women rotation schedule as well as set hours by gender/time slot system? There’s no view here either way; however,the indoor浴槽 is spacious with an attached rock open-air bath. 〇Lounge For an Accommodation with 57 Rooms,,the lounge is small; at check-in it was crowded with people.. Complimentary draft beer,,coffee,,soft drinks,and snacks are available.. At night they offer ice pops.. Since there is no complimentary minibar service either,this class of property offers relatively few drinkand food options overall.. 〇Staff Perhaps due to understaffing,the front desk felt rigidand unfriendly,and simply processed tasks mechanically.. Only one older gentleman who staffedthe lounge at night gave me any senseof genuine hospitality.. 〇The only real saving gracewas receiving ticketsfor Yugawara Plum Grove,and being ableto see beautiful plum blossoms againsta clear blue sky..

    Couples’ Trip

    Check-in was smooth. I was able to relax in the lounge with a beer and enjoy a peaceful time. Check-out was available from 8:00 to help avoid crowds, so I did it after breakfast, but I still had to line up again to return the key, which felt inefficient. I think installing a key return box would make the process smoother. One of the large public baths was unexpectedly under maintenance, but they managed it well by alternating access between men and women, so it wasn’t inconvenient. However, the open-air bath in the large public bath was lukewarm and felt cold. The scenic open-air bath was wonderful—absolutely the best. Both breakfast and dinner were very satisfying. The staff were also excellent. Next time, I’d like to visit with my daughter’s family. Thank you very much.

    I visited with high expectations, as the Accommodation is known for its cuisine, but the meals were not very good, and I was honestly surprised by the gap compared with the description and photos. It even made me question the information listed on IKYU. The bath was comfortable, but because the sauna operates on a men/women rotation schedule, there were times when it was unavailable, which was also disappointing. All staff members, including those from overseas, were very pleasant, and I could see their efforts in areas such as welcome drinks and sweets in the lobby. However, I would not choose to return to an Onsen Ryokan where the quality of the food does not match the Accommodation Fee. To management: rather than only reviewing meetings and plans, why not stay incognito once and experience firsthand what things are like now?

    The highlight is the starry sky visible from the open-air bath.

    We stayed here to celebrate my partner’s birthday. When I emailed to request a birthday cake, they kindly accommodated us, which was a big help. Since this Ryokan is deep in the mountains, the starry sky from the rooftop open-air bath was incredible. It’s great during the day too, but I especially recommend going at night. Just note that the bathing times for men and women switch depending on the time slot. The sauna is small, but it was great that we could do self-service löyly. Also, the hair dryer was a ReFa, which was a nice touch. Because we ate a late lunch around 4:00 PM, we couldn’t finish dinner, but when we asked, they made rice balls from what was left over—something we really appreciated (we feel guilty leaving food). In addition, both dinner and breakfast were served in fully private rooms, which was wonderful.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    I was able to relax, but the Onsen open-air bath temperature was low and too cold to stay in for long. Also, there were not enough chairs in the lounge, and it was crowded, so I couldn’t use it. Other than that, the food was great and the Room was spacious, so I was satisfied.

    Is it because it’s New Year’s?

    We stayed on the night of the 3rd as a group of six spanning three generations. We were assigned a Japanese-Western style Room in the Genji Annex. It faced the river and had an earthen-floored veranda area, but the entire Room was very cold. We turned the heating up high and closed both the curtains and shoji screens, which helped somewhat. The Facility felt dated and did not have a sense of luxury. Dinner was served in a semi-private dining space. Loud voices from the next room echoed through, ruining what should have been a family meal. Fortunately, they left partway through. The semi-private layout lacked soundproofing and again did not feel upscale. We were also disappointed with dinner itself—both presentation and freshness (especially the sashimi and sukiyaki beef) lacked care or refinement. It did not live up to expectations for a cuisine-focused Ryokan. There was lounge service: draft beer was available until 6:00 p.m., and sweet red bean soup was offered in the morning, which we appreciated. However, it became extremely crowded around check-in and check-out times, so it did not feel relaxing at all. This may have been due to the New Year period, but overall it ended up being a very disappointing trip for us.

    Overall, I felt the level of satisfaction was low for the price. First, regarding the meals, I thought the quality was good. The portions were on the small side, but the dishes were well thought out and satisfying. Unfortunately, there was not much sense of cleanliness throughout the Facility. There were many areas where I felt cleaning was insufficient. Overall, I felt there were not enough staff. The Ryokan as a whole is quite spacious, including the Rooms, but it made me feel that the heating/air conditioning could not keep up. There were several spots inside the building that were quite cold. There was a beer server in the lounge, which I really appreciated.

    Improvement in meal quality is needed.

    The Onsen is excellent with minimal chlorine smell. There are two types of open-air baths with different temperature settings, which is a nice touch. The room is spacious, easy to adjust the temperature, and very comfortable. The staff are well-trained and provide a high level of satisfaction. However, there are issues with the quality of the meals. Considering it costs over 70,000 yen per person during New Year’s, expectations naturally rise. It might have been an oversight, but the white rice served at breakfast (despite being cooked in an earthen pot) was undercooked in the center and unacceptable. The shabu-shabu beef lacked flavor (neither rich in fat nor flavorful red meat). While the steak meat was relatively high quality, the heated stone provided for cooking it wasn’t hot enough, leaving some pieces undercooked by the end. Although it’s understandable that soups like clear broth or miso soup may cool down due to logistics from preparation to serving, more attention could be given to maintaining their temperature. Additionally, some dishes were noticeably under-seasoned. As this is a renowned Ryokan, improvements would be greatly appreciated.

    A long-established Ryokan in Oku-Yugawara

    It was truly a pleasure to stay here after such a long time. This is a Ryokan designed for adults. The Onsen features high-quality water, with the indoor bath offering free-flowing hot spring water. The rooftop open-air bath provides both lukewarm and hot options, allowing for a relaxing experience. Meals were delicious, both dinner and breakfast, and the freshly cooked rice in an earthen pot was exceptionally tasty—we finished every bite at both meals. The lobby offers beer and soft drinks until 6 PM, which is enjoyable; however, while it doesn't need to be fully all-inclusive, it would be nice to have more variety in alcoholic beverages and the option to enjoy them after dinner as well. With more all-inclusive facilities becoming available these days, this aspect felt slightly lacking.

    I had planned to stay in July but couldn't, so this was my first visit in five months. I had already checked the location as I passed by the gate before. I was looking forward to this trip. Upon arrival at the hotel, staff immediately came to my car, carried my luggage, and provided kind and attentive service that made me glad I chose this place. Once guided inside, the ryokan exuded a sense of tradition and prestige. The room was spacious, clean, and offered an excellent view. However, it was disappointing that only tea and water were available in the room. Although beer and coffee were said to be available in the lounge, after a long drive and using a cane for walking, I didn’t feel like going out again. It was surprising not to have beer or coffee included at a hotel of this price range—it’s something I've never experienced before—and it dampened my spirits given my high expectations. Dinner featured polite explanations in Japanese from an international staff member which left me satisfied; however, there weren’t enough dishes for my liking. On a positive note, they provided rice balls as a late-night snack which allowed me to enjoy them with sake purchased during dinner back in my room—a thoughtful gesture that I appreciated. On departure day, I bought plenty of souvenirs but couldn’t shake off some lingering disappointment from certain aspects of the stay.

    Recently, it was our second visit after October. This time, we stayed to celebrate our pearl wedding anniversary and received a lovely handmade congratulatory card. We were guided promptly without any wait, and the Room was clean. Although there were many guests, there were fewer foreign visitors this time. The bath was also clean.     It was a stay for a group of elderly women, and we received kind and attentive support from the reservation stage. Due to concerns about mobility, we used the facilities within a manageable range. We minimized movement within the accommodation to avoid steps, so unfortunately, we couldn't use the open-air bath in the sky. However, we enjoyed the large public bath and private baths. We were delighted with meals served in private rooms instead of buffets, allowing us to enjoy delicious dishes at our own pace. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared with beautiful presentation and excellent taste. The dessert selection during dinner was particularly pleasing for women, featuring several varieties beautifully arranged. It would have been even better if coffee or similar beverages were available alongside dessert. The accommodation is divided into three buildings, but since there is only one location offering coffee service, it felt inconvenient for elderly guests to go out of their way to access it. Having similar spaces in each building would be more convenient. All staff members were very kind and helped us have a wonderful time. We used two rooms with beds; however, there were slight differences in layout between them—one had a seating set while the other did not. For those who cannot sit on traditional low tables due to mobility issues, having seating sets would be preferable. Additionally, as the bed floors are raised by one step higher than usual flooring levels—it poses potential risks for elderly guests' safety when moving around at night or early morning hours; please consider this aspect further. The rooms themselves were new-looking clean spaces equipped well-functionally overall! While traveling from Yugawara station via taxi required multiple vehicles accommodating larger groups like ours simultaneously—having shuttle services provided directly by your Accommodation could make things easier & smoother logistically speaking too! This trip meant much anticipation beforehand yet turned out fulfilling everyone’s expectations positively thanks largely towards efforts made here! Thank You So Much!

    An accommodation with delicious cuisine.

    The meals are prepared with great care, offering both excellent taste and presentation. There is also a wide variety of desserts. The lobby provides welcome drinks, and towels are available in the bath area, ensuring excellent service. The open-air bath with a view is very relaxing, making this an ideal accommodation for a comfortable and leisurely stay.

    First Stay at Sansuirou

    Autumn Leaves in Full Bloom at Yugawara Yugawara is a nearby Onsen town, and just a 10-minute bus ride up the mountain from the town lies Oku-Yugawara. In the heart of the mountains, I discovered a luxurious Ryokan. From the room, I could see endless mountains, and since it was during autumn foliage season, I enjoyed the most breathtaking autumn scenery of my life. The room was clean and serene, and both breakfast and dinner were impeccable. This was undoubtedly my best accommodation experience this year. Thank you to the manager and all staff members for your hospitality. I look forward to visiting again!

    Stayed in a special Japanese-Western style room on the 4th floor. The room included a bedroom, two Japanese-style rooms, and a spacious sunroom, providing ample space. However, there was no view from the room. The small garden in front of the room was poorly maintained, making it unappealing to open the curtains or use the sunroom. The room felt dim but was reasonably clean. There are two large public baths available. The rooftop bath offers great views and is gender-separated by time; it provides a relaxing experience with stargazing at night. Near the sauna, drinking water is provided—mandarin-flavored water was particularly delicious. The indoor bath is accessible 24 hours a day. Fresh bath towels are available in the changing area for each use, which is convenient; however, dust under the baskets in the changing area stood out despite an average level of cleanliness. Dinner presentation and taste were satisfying overall but felt slightly lacking in variety for a kaiseki course—one more dish would have been ideal. However, with dessert served as an assortment plate, it turned out to be just right in portion size. Service during dinner by foreign staff members was polite and cheerful. Breakfast service by Japanese staff left much to be desired: noisy handling of dishes created an unpleasant atmosphere; table settings were sloppy; clearing plates involved reaching across diners mid-meal without proper manners—this made for quite an uncomfortable experience. Overall, this accommodation offered satisfaction as a traditional Japanese inn but did not leave me wanting to return again.

    The open-air sky bath, large public bath, and private open-air baths in the guest rooms were all excellent!

    Each Onsen bath was very relaxing, and I enjoyed them multiple times. I made the most of the Onsen until just before the 11:00 AM checkout time. However, there was no changing area between my room and the open-air bath, so I had to enter the tatami room directly after bathing. There might be room for improvement in the layout of the room. Additionally, during meals, I noticed that menus were not provided individually. Although I requested one and received a copy the next day, it would be great if individual menus could be distributed beforehand so everyone can easily see them. The food was excellent, so this small change would enhance the experience even more! The service was wonderful—thank you very much!

    ・About the Room The room was very spacious, with calming tones in lighting and furniture, providing a relaxing atmosphere. The private bath in the room was also large enough for two people to stretch their legs and enjoy a leisurely soak. While it wasn't an open-air bath, the stylish lighting created a pleasant ambiance. There were occasional sounds from neighboring rooms, but they were not bothersome. ・About the Onsen The rooftop open-air onsen featured three types of baths with different water temperatures and a sauna. The self-pour sauna allowed guests to adjust the temperature while being considerate of others, which was great. There were also cold baths and chairs for outdoor relaxation, making it an ideal environment for sauna enthusiasts. Bathing while admiring mountains tinged with autumn colors and enjoying fresh air during outdoor relaxation provided an exceptional experience that left me feeling truly refreshed. ・About Meals Both breakfast and dinner showcased carefully prepared dishes that were incredibly delicious. Dinner started with appetizers featuring local fish and seasonal vegetables, followed by aromatic soup dishes made with rich broth, culminating in a main course of grilled wagyu beef on a ceramic plate—all beautifully crafted to highlight natural flavors with elegant presentation. Enjoying these dishes alongside two types of Japanese sake enhanced the dining experience even further. Breakfast included fluffy rice cooked in an iron pot accompanied by various side dishes—so delicious that I ended up eating more than usual in the morning! ・Service & Access The staff provided attentive service overall, creating a welcoming atmosphere throughout my stay. However, there is some room for improvement regarding check-in and check-out processes. Check-in was crowded; I had to wait for some time before being guided to my room after spending about 20 minutes at the lounge enjoying welcome drinks—a bit longer than expected. For check-out: although pre-payment was recommended due to anticipated crowds (which I opted for), returning keys still required standing in line—making pre-payment seem unnecessary at times. Streamlining these processes would enhance comfort during future stays. ・Access Conveniently located just one bus ride from Yugawara Station; it's only a short walk from the bus stop as well! Overall—it was an exceptionally satisfying stay!

    The Room had a histo...

    The Room had a historical charm, and it was impeccably clean, with attention to every corner. Being a corner Room, the view was excellent, and we enjoyed the beginning of the autumn foliage on the mountains. The staff provided courteous and kind service. Since we had an infant and a lot of luggage, they kindly helped us load everything into our car at check-out, which was greatly appreciated. The private open-air bath in the Room was wonderful, as well as the rooftop open-air bath with its stunning views. However, there was some distance to the dining area, and elderly guests seemed to have difficulty finding their way. We look forward to visiting again in less than a month with our other grandchildren!

    Sky Open-Air Bath Highlight

    Checked in with the 2:00 PM Plan and enjoyed exclusive use of the open-air bath "Sky" from 3:00 PM for about 30 minutes. The private mandarin bath was disappointing as it lacked fragrance, possibly due to using green mandarins. However, the post-bath lounge was clean, equipped with a large TV, and comfortable. The outdoor bath in the public bathing area was surrounded by dense trees, which blocked any scenic views—unfortunate. The Room's private open-air bath had a great view and was enjoyable. Due to the building's layout, there was a lot of walking involved inside, making it easy to get lost. In the Room were one bottled water and two tea bags provided. While complimentary coffee and juice are available in the lounge, having to go there felt inconvenient—this could be improved. As for meals, some dishes felt pre-prepared with items that were dry or not warm enough despite creative presentation efforts—it left mixed feelings overall. The front desk staff member provided polite service; however, perhaps due to understaffing, the busyness of other staff members made it hard to relax right from arrival.
