    Private open-air bath, amazing!

    The rooftop open-air bath was great, but the private open-air bath that you can use anytime is truly the best. Dinner was top-class among all the Ryokans I've visited so far. It was kaiseki cuisine, and the additional beef steak I ordered was exceptional. If only the initial check-in process had been a bit smoother, it would have been nearly perfect.

    The service was extremely poor.

    The service was terrible. Upon arrival, the staff said things like, "Didn't I tell you to flush the toilet?" or "How many times are you going to use the toilet?" to my 5-year-old daughter. Another guest, who couldn't stand it, told the staff that their way of speaking was inappropriate. It's not something you say to a child, and having stayed at numerous ryokans before, I was shocked. I never imagined being spoken to like that after paying 95,000 yen for accommodation. I will never go back again.

    Relaxed by delicious meals and the soothing Onsen.

    We visited as a three-generation family. This Ryokan is surrounded by the greenery of Oku-Yugawara, offering a quiet and serene atmosphere. While the building shows its age due to its history, it felt well-maintained in every corner. Our Room was part of an "Omakase Plan," and we were guided to a room in the Genji Annex building. The layout was unique, likely due to its traditional design, but it was spacious enough (we enjoyed imagining what each space might have been used for in the past). Being on the second floor, there wasn’t much of a view; however, none of us minded as we appreciated how conveniently located it was to access the large public bath, dining area, lounge, and other facilities. The meals—both dinner and breakfast—were diverse and visually stunning. Even my 90-year-old mother with her usually small appetite finished everything while repeatedly saying how delicious it all was. Every dish had originality and brought joy to our dining experience. The private dining room was bright and beautifully maintained like a high-end restaurant. The large public bath and open-air rooftop bath "Ozora" were spacious with an open feel; the water felt soft on our skin for a comfortable experience (the Refa hairdryer available there is also worth mentioning!). The staff members were kind and attentive at every moment. Thanks to everyone’s hospitality, our entire family had an incredibly satisfying stay. Thank you very much!

    The Facility is...

    Some facilities are outdated depending on the location. Rooms also require repairs in certain areas. The service is good, and there are no complaints in that regard. However, if you claim to be luxurious at this price point, everything should be perfect to truly embody luxury—then there would be no complaints. But as it stands... it's a bit underwhelming and feels lacking, especially compared to places like "Ashikari" in Yugawara, which currently feels more luxurious to me personally.

    An extraordinary and fulfilling two-day experience

    We stayed as a group of four women on a getaway, and it was an extraordinary and relaxing two days away from our usual busy lives in the city. The breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the large public bath was fantastic! Above all, we fully enjoyed the services such as the private open-air bath in our room and welcome drinks, leaving us completely satisfied!

    Overall, everything was wonderful and would have been perfect if not for the following points. We would like to visit again, so we would appreciate your consideration. 1. We informed you of allergies and foods we cannot eat, and you kindly called in advance to confirm. You also confirmed again at reception on the day, which seemed excellent; however, the items were not actually removed from the meal. If something is served separately it can be avoided, but if it is mixed in, it cannot be removed. For some reason, a different food that we actually like was said to have been “removed.” 2. After check-in we were waiting on the second floor and were called to be shown to our Room once, but one person had stepped away from their seat. Even though we said, “Please wait a moment—we’ll be right there,” we were then left waiting for 45 minutes. Even after telling staff several times that everyone was ready, we were only told repeatedly to “please wait.” When I finally said (rather angrily), “Surely you’ve forgotten about us by now,” we were finally taken through. The staff member then said something like an excuse—“the Room wasn’t ready”—and only apologized after I explained what had happened. 3. There was a brown stain on the light switch by the sink in the Room (I wondered if it might be blood). I wiped it with tissue paper; some of it had already hardened and what had gotten into the side could not be removed. In any case I wanted it disinfected, so I asked and alcohol disinfectant was brought over. The staff member looked suspicious and asked, “Did you take a photo?” Since I had no intention of requesting compensation or anything like that, I replied that I hadn’t—but it left us feeling uncomfortable as if they thought we had caused it. 4. The women’s bath was very hot; you may want to lower the temperature slightly. Also, long hair had been left swirling around in the washing area; with many international guests and different manners this may be unavoidable, but it was disappointing. It seems you are handling an extremely large number of guests and may be short-staffed. However, as we would like to visit again, please take note of these points going forward.

    The meals are exceptional.

    I stayed in the "Kashiwagi" Room on the 7th floor. I chose a room with an onsen open-air bath, and since it was set to a lukewarm temperature, I could relax and enjoy it. The temperature can be adjusted if it gets cold. Although I read reviews mentioning that the building is old, while it is indeed an older structure, there are many photogenic spots, and the dining area has a luxurious feel. It left no negative impression at all—I’m truly glad I chose this place. The large public bath and scenic open-air bath provide towels and all amenities, so you can go empty-handed. Dinner was especially amazing—everything was delicious! They even served four types of desserts, which made me very happy! I definitely want to visit again.

    Rooms with Open-Air Baths

    The meals were satisfying. The open-air bath with a view and the indoor bath in the large public bath were also enjoyable. The building has historical value, so I understand that a slight musty smell is inevitable. If staying, 聚楽第 might have been a better choice. Areas for improvement: - Musty smell inside the elevator to the dining area - Temperature control of the private open-air bath in guest rooms - Temperature control of the large public bath (it was out of use due to high temperature)

    Spectacular Open-Air Bath with Stunning Views

    I enjoyed a relaxing 2-night stay. The lounge was free to use, and I ended up having four glasses of draft beer upon arrival! At night, there was hot water available, which was gentle on the body and helped me sleep well. The Room and the mountain view from the open-air bath were magnificent, and the tranquility deeply touched my heart.

    Thank you for your hospitality.

    The room was spacious, the bath was relaxing, and the meals were visually stunning and absolutely delicious. We would love to visit again in a different season. We are already talking about reserving dried fish souvenirs next time!

    Unagi Kamadaki Rice

    The meals were delicious last year, so we stayed again this year. The reserved room was a renovated Japanese-Western style room and very clean, but the air conditioning did not work, so we were moved to another room. During that time, the staff were very considerate about us using our valuable time for the move. They adjusted our meal time to let us relax and even checked on us at both the shop and dining area. Thank you to all the staff members! The meals were just as delicious as last time. The eel rice cooked in a pot was exquisite. We will visit again during a cooler season when air conditioning is not needed.

    A concern

    We had a very satisfying stay at the Ryokan. However, I would like to share one concern. We booked the "【5,000 Fireworks Spectacle!】Atami Ocean Fireworks Festival Plan! Dinner Starts at 5 PM / 1 Night with 2 Meals" plan. As an elderly couple, we were very much looking forward to watching the Atami fireworks on that day. However, this plan required us to go to the venue in Atami on our own after dinner. Unfamiliar with the location of your Ryokan and assuming we could view the fireworks from there, we were shocked by this arrangement. To make matters worse, there was no Shuttle Service provided to the venue either. We felt that we did not receive even basic services that should have been offered under this plan which we agreed upon when booking it. The concept of this plan is entirely unclear—whether it is misleading advertising or something bordering on fraud is questionable. It makes us wonder why such a reputable Ryokan would create such a plan in the first place. We sincerely hope for significant reflection and improvement moving forward.

    It was my first visi...

    It was my first visit, but everything about the accommodation, including the onsen, meals, and staff service, was highly satisfying. If I had to mention one thing, it would be that a dining area closer to the accommodation building would have been nice. The open-air bath with a view offered an incredible sense of freedom and was amazing both in the morning and at night. I look forward to visiting again in a different season.

    Manyo no Yu

    A tranquil Onsen located in Oku-Yugawara. Yugawara Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot springs, opened 1,300 years ago and is even mentioned in the Manyoshu poetry anthology. It was once famous as a retreat for literary masters. Upon being shown to the room, you can choose one of four types of incense to be lit, creating a calming atmosphere—I ended up buying all four as souvenirs. In the lobby, complimentary beer, snacks, and sweets are available until 6 PM, while drinks and ice cream are offered until 10 PM. The baths—both the large communal bath and the rooftop open-air bath—are fully equipped with towels and amenities so you can conveniently visit empty-handed before or after meals. The rooftop open-air bath is particularly delightful with its great view and adjustable water temperature. However, there were many stink bugs at night making it less inviting; morning baths are recommended instead. The cuisine is thoughtfully prepared with attention to detail—you can enjoy sashimi or meat with three different sauces or savor dishes like clam soup inspired by Osamu Dazai’s works, crab dumplings in broth, tomato hot pot soup, among others. Each dish comes with detailed explanations on how to enjoy it best on the menu card. While Oku-Yugawara may be slightly inconvenient without a car, it's highly recommended for those seeking a peaceful holiday reminiscent of literary masters' retreats.

    First, I was disappo...

    First, I was disappointed with the meal I had been looking forward to. The layout of the facility was complex, and when we were guided to our room, there was no explanation about evacuation routes, which made me feel uneasy. I had prepared myself for some level of age and odor in the accommodation, but I was very concerned to find several hairs on the floor near the threshold and that the bedroom cleaning seemed insufficient. It was a disappointing stay.

    Excellent hospitality with ALL 5 STARS!!!

    Enjoy the rooftop open-air bath while watching the sunset... and refresh yourself in the sauna... (⌒∇⌒) The meals are thoughtfully prepared, leaving you with a truly happy feeling... (⌒∇⌒) Actually, when we were about to leave the Hotel, we noticed a flat tire on our car and found ourselves in trouble. However, the local towing company and gas station staff were all incredibly kind. Especially, the dashing front desk manager of the Hotel who introduced us to a gas station... He even drove us there and personally greeted the staff on our behalf. We are deeply grateful for such attentive support during this unexpected situation. The true essence of Japanese hospitality!     The open-air "Sky Bath" is refreshing and satisfying.

    I stayed for one night on a weekday. The Onsen, "Sky Bath" on the rooftop of the main building, offered a sense of openness and was surrounded by mountains, making it an excellent place to enjoy a relaxing soak. The sauna with an outdoor view was also available until the next morning and very comfortable. The staff provided exceptional service from the warm welcome at check-in to explaining the Facility, guiding us at the dining area, and serving meals—all well-trained and pleasant interactions. The room I stayed in was a twin room with an open-air bath in Jurakudai of the main building. However, some aspects of its Facility felt outdated, particularly in areas like plumbing; it might be time to update features such as toilets and sinks to more modern ones. Additionally, I noticed that the temperature of the private open-air bath water was slightly low. Both dinner and breakfast were satisfying in terms of quality and quantity. The dining staff were attentive with excellent timing for serving dishes while providing clear explanations about them—leaving a very positive impression. While I was highly satisfied with both staff service and Onsen facilities, certain aspects such as outdated hardware stood out as areas for improvement. Adding complimentary beverages like alcohol (besides just water) in the room's refrigerator could further enhance overall satisfaction levels.

    Good accommodation.

    The building shows its age, but it is well-cleaned and tidy. The onsen left my skin feeling smooth after bathing—truly a "beauty bath." It’s such a great onsen that the quality of the spring water could be promoted more. I also appreciated having towels provided in the bathing area. Due to the structure of the building, it seems unavoidable that the heat from the onsen spreads throughout, which might explain why there were some spots with a musty smell. This could be concerning for those with respiratory allergies. The lounge offered Asahi draft beer until around 5 or 6 PM, which was enjoyable. I had no complaints about the service. The staff were pleasant and welcoming, and the accommodation was quiet—a peaceful retreat far from any hustle and bustle. Having recently stayed at more crowded accommodations where noise and busyness were overwhelming, this place felt incredibly comfortable to me. My friend even commented, "It was such a nice accommodation!" This ryokan combines traditional hospitality with modern sensibilities—attentive yet unobtrusive service—and it was truly wonderful!

    This was our third s...

    This was our third stay since our first visit three years ago. We stayed as a couple because my husband wanted to relax at Oku-Yugawara Onsen. As expected, the meals were delicious, and we thoroughly enjoyed the open-air bath with a view of the sky. We were very satisfied. Although the building shows its age, some parts of the large public bath, room, and facilities have been beautifully renovated, making it even more comfortable than before. Both dinner and breakfast were truly delicious and visually delightful as well. Thank you for the wonderful meals! This is an accommodation we would love to visit again.

    We stayed on a Sunday to avoid the crowds, bringing along my elderly mother. It was our first time at Oku-Yugawara Onsen, and we had a wonderfully relaxing time enjoying the onsen, making it a perfect holiday. The rooftop open-air bath was particularly amazing, offering an unobstructed view of the mountains and allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in nature. The sauna was also very refreshing. We enjoyed beer in the lounge after bathing, which made for a delightful experience. Our room was a beautifully renovated Japanese-Western style room that felt spacious for just two people. The amenities at the sink were well-prepared and complete. Meals were served in a private dining room, allowing us to enjoy them at our own pace, which we appreciated greatly. However, while there were many dishes served in small portions, we felt that fewer dishes might have been preferable. Since we expected purely Japanese cuisine, some of the Western-style elements seemed unnecessary to us. That said, the rice cooked in an iron pot was absolutely exquisite! One thing to note is that moving between buildings or using stairs can be challenging if mobility is an issue; though we were aware of this beforehand. Overall, it was a calm, clean, and wonderful accommodation experience—thank you very much!

    It was my first time staying in Yugawara and at Sansuirou, but I had a wonderfully relaxing and luxurious experience. The bath is famous for its panoramic view, but even the regular large public bath was spacious, charming, and perfect for unwinding. The meals were beautifully presented from appetizers to rice and dessert, and everything was incredibly delicious. I enjoyed savoring each dish while referring to the menu provided. The Room was spacious and comfortable, and I appreciated having a coffee machine in the Room. I would love to visit again!

    When I entered the room, it felt cold, so I requested a heater, which was promptly provided. I appreciated this thoughtful service. The bath was spacious and not crowded, allowing for a relaxing experience. However, during the phone inquiry, the staff answered my questions without confirming the reserved room details, which was disappointing. Additionally, the staff's attitude during meals was unsatisfactory. It was also surprising that the final dishes of meat, miso soup, and pickles were served together on one tray while I was still drinking alcohol. Furthermore, the red wine I had ordered earlier did not arrive until I reminded them again and could not be fully enjoyed during the meal. Coffee is only available in the lounge after breakfast. Nowadays, having a coffee maker in rooms seems standard; even drip coffee would have been appreciated if a machine wasn't available. While aging is understandable for an established ryokan like this one, noticeable marks on walls in rooms and hallways gave off a neglected impression. As an esteemed ryokan with history and tradition, I hope to see improvements in these areas moving forward.

    The open-air bath with a view is incredibly relaxing.

    We stayed with our elderly parents and had a wonderful time. The bath and lounge were very spacious, allowing us to enjoy a relaxing and elegant holiday. The meals were also delicious. We would love to visit again!

    Enjoyed the cuisine and Onsen.

    The cuisine offers a delightful variety, showcasing the chef's dedication and attention to detail. The sashimi, made with local fish, was exceptional. The Onsen keeps your body warm for a while even after stepping out. The room's air conditioning is centrally controlled. Although it gets quite cool at night in the mountains of Oku-Yugawara, the setting was on cooling mode due to requests from multiple guests, which might be challenging for elderly visitors. To reach the dining area, you need to go down to the second floor, move to another building, and then go upstairs again. There are some steep stairs along the way that may pose a challenge for those with mobility concerns. Both the cuisine and Onsen were truly wonderful. Thank you very much!
