    Highly Satisfying Dinner and Breakfast

This was our first stay in about 15.6 years. The front desk and dining area have changed since then, but we could still fully feel the atmosphere of this long-established Ryokan. We had very high expectations for the meals, and they exceeded them in both quality and taste. We enjoyed everything through dessert while taking in Yugawara’s Onsen town and literary charm. Every dish impressed us—from the seasoning and presentation to the several kinds of desserts. We would love to return in a different season. Two disappointments: The slippers and the geta-style toilet sandals were very difficult to wear. The slippers hurt our feet when worn barefoot, and they felt inconvenient for walking around the large property. Both my mother and I needed socks to wear them comfortably. The toilet sandals were also too high, making them slippery with socks on; it was very inconvenient to take off our socks every time we used the restroom. The other issue was that the indoor bath at the panoramic bath was far too hot. Since it was raining, we wanted to warm up indoors, but my mother and I—as well as three other female guests—found it too hot and decided not to enter. Overall, however, the bed was comfortable, and we liked the lobby where snacks and juice were available. Being able to purchase Koumedo’s kibi mochi was also a big plus point for us. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    The meals were delicious.

The building is a bit old, but it felt elegant and refined. Welcome drinks in the lounge were soft drinks and beer, available from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. I would have appreciated more alcoholic options such as wine. Also, when the futons were laid out in the Room, I wish more thought had been given to their placement. On top of that, there was a long hair on the futon, which made me feel uncomfortable. The explanation from the foreign staff member who guided us to the Room was a little hard to understand, and there was no explanation about the futons. I would like to see better staff training. The dining area had semi-private seating, so we could relax comfortably. The kaiseki meal looked beautiful, and I was satisfied with both the portion size and taste. Breakfast featured rice cooked in a traditional kamado stove and was delicious; I especially remember how good the dried fish was. The open-air bath had a great view and felt wonderful.

This was my second stay. The thoughtfully crafted menu and outstanding ingredients truly impressed me!

We stayed here as a mother and daughter.

I visited with my 91-year-old mother. I thought I had checked the website thoroughly, but there were many stairs inside the building, which was difficult. We chose a room with an open-air bath for my mother, but there were significant steps and no handrails, so it felt dangerous if she were to fall and we did not use it. The bedroom also had a small step that felt unsafe. Dinner was carefully prepared and delicious. Breakfast was disappointing because the miso soup was lukewarm. When my mother asked for extra pickled plum, it cost 170 yen. I felt that something like pickled plum could have been provided as a complimentary item. However, all of the staff were very kind.

    Excellent dining experience

Dinner was delicious from start to finish, right through to dessert. The salt-grilled ayu was outstanding, and I was truly impressed. Breakfast was also excellent—the rice and salmon were especially tasty. The open-air Onsen on the 8th floor with a panoramic view was great, and the cold bath was spacious; I also enjoyed the sauna with its beautiful view. In the large public bath, the indoor bath temperature was just right and very relaxing. All staff were polite and wonderful.\nHowever, while check-in went smoothly, it took a very long time to be shown to my Room, and I wasn’t guided there until around 3:40 pm. I wanted to relax in my Room sooner and go to the Onsen, so that part was a bit disappointing.

The open-air bath in the Room is amazing.

After reading various Reviews, including some quite harsh ones, I was a bit worried. However, the Accommodation by Noguchi Kanko—and Tsubaki in particular—was so highly regarded that I decided to stay. The building is definitely old, but the private open-air bath in the Room was outstanding. A hinoki bath with the mountains right in front of you is truly wonderful. The bed was comfortable, but the air-conditioning noise was loud—I couldn’t sleep with it on. So I set the living room AC to maximum and went to sleep. Is there any way this could be improved? As for the meals, I’m sorry to say that compared with how amazing Tsubaki is overall, they felt about average. I asked for rice to be served first, but it didn’t come across properly, which was disappointing. The amenities are well stocked and very convenient. Oku-Yugawara Onsen is easy to access and close enough from central Tokyo, and unlike Atami it isn’t crowded with noisy young people—so I love it. I hope it stays a calm Onsen town going forward. I’d like to visit again. (I made a Reservation with an affordable Plan!)

    Mountain Views

The mountain-surrounded scenery in Oku-Yugawara was wonderful. It’s not far from the station by bus, and buses run frequently, so it’s convenient—yet you’re still surrounded by mountains. You can enjoy a secluded getaway at a reasonable price. Access to Manyo Park and the waterfall was also great, and the services were very comfortable, such as the rooftop sauna, draft beer served in the evening, and incense being lit for us.

    A spacious, relaxing atmosphere

From the moment you step inside the entrance, you can feel the relaxed atmosphere throughout the building. The layout of each area and the corridors are spacious, so there is no stress even when passing other guests. Both the Room and the bath were kept clean and well maintained, making this an Accommodation where we could rest with peace of mind. Some of the dining staff are international team members, but everyone provided comfortable and kind service. We chose the standard meal plan, which was just the right amount, but next time we would love to enjoy some additional menu items as well. It is also easily accessible from central Tokyo, making it a great Accommodation for enjoying seasonal nature.

    The Room had a musty...

The Room had a musty smell typical of an old Ryokan, and the toilet was small, making it inconvenient to use. The window was also hard to open, there were no flowers in the alcove, and the Room felt bleak—far from what I had imagined, which was disappointing. If I had to mention something positive, the open-air bath with a sky view was nice.

    I will never go again.

The Room was not properly cleaned. Dust had accumulated on the armrests. The toilet in the Room smelled bad. In addition, areas other than the toilets at the dining area on the 7th floor also smelled unpleasant. The bathing area where you wash your body had a sewer-like odor. We were asked to cooperate by settling our bill early, and we did so, but in the end we were still kept waiting just to return the key—likely because the front desk is extremely small and can only handle two groups at a time. Regarding allergies, I wrote “seafood/shellfish,” but it was changed to only “mouth-corner allergy,” and sashimi was served. I will never go again.

    Wonderful Accommodation: Sansuiro

The staff were very kind, and I was impressed by their attentive service. The meals were delicious and beautifully presented—everything was excellent. The open-air bath on the 8th floor now has a sauna, so the jacuzzi tub has been changed into a cold plunge, which was a bit disappointing. I was also very disappointed that the curtains were worn out and tattered. I hope they can be replaced as soon as possible.

The concept is all over the place.

We stayed here with a couple who are friends of ours. With competition among Onsen facilities in Yugawara becoming increasingly fierce, we could feel the staff’s sincere effort to improve customer service, but the concept they were aiming for was unclear and inconsistent. The building is very old and has been renovated, but perhaps due to limitations of the original structure, it is not particularly user-friendly. The Room was very spacious, but the living area and bedroom were not connected, and we had to put on footwear to move between them. The indoor bath had no window and was very dark, so we didn’t feel like using it. I think they put a lot of thought into the meals as well, but the Japanese head chef seemed to be trying to offer something new by incorporating Italian elements; however, the concept felt unfocused and inconsistent, and we couldn’t tell what we were supposed to enjoy. The only clear highlight was the quality of the Onsen water—it felt wonderful on the skin. The rooftop open-air bath is also very pleasant. That said, it’s hard to shake the impression that the sauna was added simply because it’s trendy right now: basically only one or two people can use it at a time, and you can’t do löyly unless you call someone over. As a result, temperature control is difficult and it ended up being a disappointing sauna experience. At minimum, I wish there had been a call button installed. It was apparent that they are struggling with which market segment to target; I think they would be better off focusing on something specific—enhancing services for families with children or allowing guests to bring pets, for example. Still, several new staff members provided attentive service during our stay; that left a very positive impression on us and made us want to support them. I also think management—including the head chef—should actually stay at other Ryokan in Yugawara or Atami to learn what things are like today. Although pricing is in the mid-range, we did not feel it offered good value for money and would not consider returning. We are honestly worried about how many more years this place can last as-is—but we truly hope they will work hard and turn things around.

A Relaxing Onsen Blending into the Vast Sky

The round window in the “Jurakudai” Room is truly wonderful. The indoor bath is small, but I really appreciate that it’s an Onsen. Since the tub is concrete, after soaking a few times my bottom felt a bit sore… The panoramic open-air bath “Ozora” offers an amazing sense of openness. Repeating the sauna and cold plunge a few times, then soaking in the Onsen while gazing up at the sky—pure bliss!

    Please clean up.

As you can see in the photos, the display shelves are covered in dust and there are holes left unrepaired in the walls. It feels like they opened the Room just to accommodate guests during the holiday period.

If I had to be picky,

Overall, we were very satisfied—thank you very much. If I may make a few suggestions: 1) It would be helpful to have two Room keys (one for men and one for women) when going to the baths. 2) There is a two-person table by the window in the Room, but since three of us are staying, we would like three chairs. 3) The TV placement is hard to view. We would be happy if it were placed in the center of the back stand so everyone can watch together. We only used that stand for luggage, so that spot would be ideal. 4) The open-air bath temperature was too low, and we felt like we might catch a cold. 5) PayPay could be used inside the Ryokan, but it would be great if it could also be used to pay for the Reservation (is this handled by IKYU?).

    It was very relaxing.

We stayed in a Room with an indoor bath and a private open-air bath. Although the Room is older, it was well maintained, and we thoroughly enjoyed Yugawara’s soft hot-spring water. The food was delicious as expected, and despite the many dishes, the portions were just right—we felt perfectly satisfied by the final dessert. Thank you to all the staff. We would love to stay again.

I was able to relax at a long-established Onsen Ryokan.

I visited on a weekday before the Golden Week holidays. I had read many Reviews beforehand, but personally, I didn’t find it bad. I stayed in Tokiwadai, and the Room was spacious and very clean. The scent of incense filled the entire building. Incense was also provided in the Room, but in some areas the fragrance was quite strong, so preferences may vary. As this is a long-established Ryokan, it felt like renovated areas and older sections were mixed together. The dining area in Tokiwadai was clean and private. The meal portion felt just right for a woman. It was served with many small dishes, letting you enjoy a variety of ingredients little by little. For an outside meal service it was lightly seasoned, so those looking forward to bold flavors might find it a bit lacking. The Onsen were satisfying—I used both the sky-view Onsen and the large public bath. They did feel slightly lukewarm at times. It was helpful not having to bring towels from the Room. Depending on the bathing time, the water temperature varied. There is a lot of walking and many stairs, so it may be difficult for elderly guests who need barrier-free access. The free drinks were available until late, and there was also a good selection of souvenirs. I soaked in the Onsen many times and felt refreshed. Thank you very much.

    We are very sorry.

I stayed in the same type of Room for the first time in 10 years, and I was shocked at how much it has changed—it's like it has become a completely different Ryokan. In the garden outside the Room, dead trees were left as they were, and there was no sign of maintenance such as clearing fallen leaves. It seemed there were mites in the futon or the Room; I developed symptoms consistent with mite bites the morning after returning home. I assume in-room dining has been discontinued due to labor cost reductions. While that may be unavoidable, I was honestly surprised at how poor the meals were. In particular, I have never experienced a Ryokan with such an unpleasant breakfast, so it came as a shock. With hopes for future improvement, I will say not that the food was "not tasty," but that it was extremely bad. The service level from the young female staff member at breakfast was also far too poor. The rate was over 200,000 yen for one night, but at present it is not worth that price. In the past, I even repeated my stay in this same Room and felt it matched its price. I hope that someday it will improve and be reborn as a great Ryokan again. On a positive note, an older gentleman who assisted us in the lounge in the evening and a male staff member during dinner were very kind and helpful. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff members who treated us kindly.

I stayed on a Sunday in early April.

This was my first stay. I was reasonably satisfied with both the sky open-air bath and the open-air bath. However, I did not feel that the changing area was being cleaned and managed regularly. Even the way the towels were stacked looked like a messy pile. The meals were disappointing for what I paid. With an accommodation fee of over 50,000 yen, there was no menu and no explanation of the dishes—this was my first time experiencing that. Taste depends on the head chef’s palate, but everything was lightly seasoned and portions were modest. As for service, the younger staff worked hard, but it felt somewhat mechanical—far from what I would call “communication.” Both the guest room and each Facility gave me the impression of repeated renovations, but there were signs in various places that things had been left unfinished. I did feel that cleaning overall was done properly. Regarding the musty smell mentioned in other Reviews, the incense used to cover it up was very strong (so much so that when I opened my suitcase after returning home, it still smelled like incense). One more point from Reviews: I saw comments saying car settings had been changed, and mine had been altered as well (side mirror settings). Honestly, it feels unpleasant for staff to handle anything beyond what is necessary to move a car while it is in their care. *Since there are many negative points above, please delete this if possible. I hope my disappointment comes through.*

It’s a long-established place, but it was a bit disappointing.

A long-established inn in Oku-Yugawara Onsen with 60 years of history, but the building is old. The Rooms and Facilities have been partially renovated, yet they still feel dated and not very functional. The rooftop open-air bath has plenty of space, but the water temperature is either too hot or too lukewarm—no middle ground. The meals are also lacking in both quality and quantity. At this price, it offers neither good value nor satisfaction. Perhaps Japanese guests are not the target audience?

    It was a pleasant stay.

    - The food was outstanding. The course was meticulously crafted, and both the portion size and flavors were perfect. The sashimi with irizake was especially exceptional—my wife raved about it as well. Explanations at serving were kept to the bare minimum, and when needed we could read the detailed menu (a substantial three-page booklet), which conveyed the chef’s philosophy and let us focus on both conversation and the meal. The new building where dinner is served was spotless, and the walkway to the restaurant was decorated with colorful Japanese umbrellas, which really lifted our spirits. Overall, we were highly satisfied. - There are two baths—one on the rooftop and one indoor—used on a rotating schedule. Both were spacious with plenty of room for the number of guests, so we could relax comfortably. The view was also great—excellent overall. - The downside is that our Room felt a bit dated: when we turned on the heater it made a constant rattling noise, one window wouldn’t open, and things like the elevator and automatic doors creaked heavily—hard to say it matched the price point. You can also hear voices from outside quite clearly; however, closing the fire door blocks most of it out. We only noticed this at night, but I wish we had been told during check-in/arrival guidance.

    Thank you for your support.

Thank you for your hospitality. I have two concerns. After using the hair treatment, my hair became unusually dry, so I would appreciate it if you could consider changing the brand or providing hair oil. Also, when switching the observation bath to the women’s time slot, I would be grateful if you could keep hair ties available at all times.

    An Onsen Ryokan in Oku-Yugawara

I was soothed by the hot springs in Oku-Yugawara. The stars were clearly visible, and I could relax at a leisurely pace. I love saunas and had high expectations, but the temperature wasn’t very high. Even adding 5–6 minutes to my usual 12-minute session, I didn’t feel like I sweated much. Despite that, the cold bath was extremely cold. The meals were served carefully and felt decent overall. You can eat calmly in a semi-private setting. There were some harsh Reviews, but it wasn’t that bad—actually, it was good. It was a bit disappointing that the complimentary beer service ended early.

I’d love to stay here again.

The welcome drink selection, including beer, was a nice touch, and the freshly ground coffee available except late at night was delicious. The bath temperature was just right for me, and with amenities provided in the bath area, I could go without bringing anything. I was also satisfied with the food. I would definitely like to visit again.

The meal times were very disappointing...

We stayed to celebrate my father’s 60th birthday. I had high expectations after reading the Reviews, but personally there were many moments that left me disappointed. As others have mentioned, perhaps due to renovations and extensions, it was a bit hard to find your way around the building, and it also feels somewhat dated. However, this was stated in advance, and everything was kept very clean, so I have no complaints about the Facility. What disappointed me was the food and the service from the staff member assigned to our table. The dinner appetizer looked and tasted like something you’d expect at breakfast, and the dishes that followed had combinations and flavors that were unfamiliar in a negative way. As for breakfast miso soup, it tasted as if they simply added lots of ingredients but used no dashi—at least that’s how it came across. (It may be an approach where the ingredients themselves are meant to create the broth flavor, but even so, I couldn’t taste much at all.) Honestly, this may be my first time feeling this disappointed with dinner and breakfast at an Onsen Accommodation... Above all else, my entire family felt uncomfortable with the service from our table attendant. Specifically: no smile; no greetings such as “Excuse me”; loudly clattering dishes when placing or clearing them (I’ve never experienced such noisy and rough service at a meal where we paid a certain amount); no response even when we said “please”; visibly annoyed when we asked again about what a dish was...and more. It was hard to understand. We had reserved a cake for my father’s birthday celebration as well, but when it was brought out there wasn’t even a simple “Happy birthday”—it was placed down mechanically, which made us feel awkward. I’ve never written a Review like this before even if I had minor concerns during past stays, but this time I felt compelled to do so. It is fine if this Review is not published; I simply hope it reaches the Accommodation staff appropriately and leads to improvements. That said, we did not feel any discomfort with other staff members’ service practices; there were also positives such as the rooftop open-air bath with a great view and unlimited beer in the lounge (until 6:00 p.m.). Thank you for taking care of us.

    It was a stressful accommodation.

The 120 m² maisonette at BOUROU NOGUCHI Hakodate, one of Noguchi Kanko’s Accommodations, was excellent. Kitano Kaze Saryo was so-so. Kaiseiro and Sansuiro were not a good fit for me. This was my 320th newly tried Accommodation, and my third trip this year. No Shuttle Service. Even after a week, I never received a reply to my email inquiry, so I had low expectations from the start. Seniors or anyone with limited mobility should be cautious—there are steps everywhere. The dining area, the large public bath, and the panoramic bath all require using stairs. It’s 19 steps up to the panoramic bath. 〇Room A Japanese-Western corner Room on the 8th floor (Jurakudai). As with Kaiseiro, slippers are required even for the refrigerator area and the toilet each time. There is no changing area or shower in the open-air bath area. With such an inconvenient layout, I also questioned whether the water could truly be kept clean, so I didn’t use it even once. Yukata robes, samue loungewear, and bathrobes are provided. The duvet is heavy. Only tea bags were provided; the refrigerator contained water only. 〇Dining Japanese-Western fusion—an odd menu overall. The number of dishes was average. It wasn’t bad, but nothing stood out as especially delicious either. Using an in-house voucher from my Diamond member benefit, I pre-ordered their special abalone steak dish—but it was so small I laughed (it looked more like tokobushi). It was my first time being that disappointed by abalone. There were many kinds of desserts, but they were too sweet to finish them all. The rice and the dried horse mackerel at breakfast were nicely fatty and very tasty. 〇Panoramic Open-Air Bath It’s open and pleasant, but since there is only one location it operates on a men/women rotation schedule. Constantly checking times became tiring. Towels are provided. For that size facility there are only three washing stations indoors and three outdoors—just six total—and seeing a group of eight men made me wonder whether everyone actually washed before entering; because of that I couldn’t fully relax in what should have been a great “sky” open-air bath experience anyway. Even if it were smaller, having separate baths for men and women available at any time might have been better in my view. The post-bath lounge also offered water only. 〇Large Public Bath One section happened to be under maintenance during my stay, so this also ran on a timed men/women rotation schedule as well as set hours by gender/time slot system? There’s no view here either way; however, the indoor浴槽 is spacious with an attached rock open-air bath. 〇Lounge For an Accommodation with 57 Rooms,,the lounge is small; at check-in it was crowded with people.. Complimentary draft beer,,coffee,,soft drinks, and snacks are available.. At night they offer ice pops.. Since there is no complimentary minibar service either, this class of property offers relatively few drinkand food options overall.. 〇Staff Perhaps due to understaffing, the front desk felt rigidand unfriendly, and simply processed tasks mechanically.. Only one older gentleman who staffedthe lounge at night gave me any senseof genuine hospitality.. 〇The only real saving gracewas receiving ticketsfor Yugawara Plum Grove, and being ableto see beautiful plum blossoms againsta clear blue sky..

    Couples’ Trip

Check-in was smooth. I was able to relax in the lounge with a beer and enjoy a peaceful time. Check-out was available from 8:00 to help avoid crowds, so I did it after breakfast, but I still had to line up again to return the key, which felt inefficient. I think installing a key return box would make the process smoother. One of the large public baths was unexpectedly under maintenance, but they managed it well by alternating access between men and women, so it wasn’t inconvenient. However, the open-air bath in the large public bath was lukewarm and felt cold. The scenic open-air bath was wonderful—absolutely the best. Both breakfast and dinner were very satisfying. The staff were also excellent. Next time, I’d like to visit with my daughter’s family. Thank you very much.
