A Trusted Member of the Noguchi Kanko Group
I happened to get some unexpected time off and was looking for an Accommodation I could stay at, when I noticed a great-value “special conditions” Plan and made a Reservation. In the end, there were no inconveniences at all due to the “special conditions” reason—I simply enjoyed an excellent deal. To be honest, I stayed without doing much research, so it was only at check-in that I learned this is part of the Noguchi Kanko Group. I was impressed that my past stay history within the group’s Hotels/Ryokans had been properly shared. I’ve always been very satisfied with the dining at other group Hotels/Ryokans, and this time was no exception—the meal was outstanding. The standard kaiseki course is wonderful, but I especially recommend upgrading the rice. It does cost extra, but it greatly increases overall satisfaction with the meal. Regarding dinner: Even though salt, wasabi, and several sauces were provided for the meat dish, there were only three slices of meat—so I couldn’t fully enjoy all the condiments. It felt a bit wasteful. This is just my selfish request, but I’d be happy if there were more slices. For breakfast, I enjoyed plenty of “Fukkurinko” rice (also served in JAL First Class), which gave me a great start to the day. While parts of the building do show its age in places, many areas have been renovated, and there were absolutely no inconveniences in the Room we stayed in. One highlight worth mentioning is the sauna by the scenic open-air bath. The flow from Onsen → sauna → cold bath → relaxation area → water station is perfectly designed with no wasted steps. I heard there is no chiller used for the cold bath, but it was still ice-cold. The sauna stove is also a Harvia Legend series unit, so both heat and performance were spot on. On this day, men could use the scenic open-air bath during nighttime hours—and importantly: you can use the sauna even late at night! *Please note: usage times for men/women change on odd/even days depending on rotation.* Lastly, it truly saddens me to see thoughtless Reviews about foreign staff members. Their service was excellent as they worked hard every moment—and I have great respect for them speaking such challenging Japanese.

It turned into a disappointing trip...
I was really looking forward to our stay, but it turned into a very disappointing trip. It didn’t live up to our expectations or the price. First, my son said there was blood on the tatami in our Room. I couldn’t believe it, but there were clearly visible bloodstains. What kind of blood was it? It was the sort of stain you would definitely notice during cleaning. The toilet had a strong odor, and every time we used it, it was unpleasant. And most importantly, the food… Service was extremely slow and the portions were small. Even though there were three kinds of sauce for the meat, we only got three slices. Everything else was truly just one bite each. After dinner my sons complained they were still hungry. My husband was speechless and had nothing to say. What was supposed to be a trip to make memories became an awful summer memory. I don’t believe this is “high-class.” I should have checked the Reviews properly beforehand. I’d also heard there would be an incense service, but there wasn’t one—maybe it depends on the Room? We ended up buying some at the shop. The scent itself was lovely.

A relaxing Onsen!
Overall, it was a very satisfying stay. What I especially loved was the Onsen! The rooftop open-air bath was spacious, and with a sauna and cold plunge pool as well, it was incredibly relaxing. It’s also great that towels are provided, so you can visit without bringing anything. The indoor Onsen baths were also spacious, and there was an open-air bath there too, so I could enjoy them from morning to night. The meals were the right portion size and delicious!! For the main meat dish, I think it would be even better if the sauce were a bit simpler. During my stay there was also a festival-style event, and even as an adult I unexpectedly enjoyed the ring toss and yo-yo fishing—it became a wonderful memory! The drinks in the lobby lounge and the post-bath ice pop service were also a nice touch. I’d love to stay again.

As wonderful as ever.
This was our fifth stay. The service from the international staff during meals was excellent. Their Japanese was very good, and they spoke clearly, which made it easy for us seniors to understand. The portion sizes were just right, and the dashi broth was outstanding. We will be back again.

The smell has been lingering the whole time.
The Room had a persistent odor throughout my stay. It smelled like food, alcohol, cigarettes, or mold, and the air purifier didn’t seem to help. The carpet was also covered in stains, and it felt like it hadn’t been properly maintained for years. It was late August, but there were no insects around the open-air bath or in the hallways. Of course it’s better not to have any, but it still felt strange. These are my honest impressions from visiting again after 30 years.

Stay in a room with an open-air bath and enjoy the classic atmosphere of a long-established Ryokan.
Upon arrival, they take your key and move your car for you. In any case, the service is extremely courteous. The front desk and shared areas are tasteful and spotless. They also accommodated our early arrival around 2:30 pm. Check-in can get crowded, but for Rooms with a private open-air bath, you’re shown straight to your Room and everything is handled there.\nWe recommend reserving massages or aromatherapy in advance before arrival.\nOur Room was “Jurakudai,” 7th-floor corner Room No. 275, “Yokobue.” At 50 m² (the smaller type), it has two beds in a 12-tatami layout, so it felt a bit tight. That’s why the 3-tatami entry area felt necessary to keep things comfortable.\nThe private open-air bath was large enough for me (183 cm) to stretch out fully, with a great sense of openness—very satisfying. However, the interior does show its age; we found a few insects inside the light fixtures.\nBecause the open-air bath was added onto the balcony later, access is directly from the Room and the living area effectively becomes the changing space. The shower area has an extremely small tub made of old Oya stone set below floor level; at first glance it felt unsettling and was honestly quite difficult to use. We didn’t use it at all—instead we went to the public bath when washing up.\nSince this is an older Room, there are some areas (such as under sliding doors) that can’t easily be reached for cleaning, which is understandable. Overall it’s kept generally clean.\nOn the other hand, the dining venue—through a gorgeous gold-brocade-like approach into private rooms—was very beautiful and comfortable. We enjoyed most dishes such as yuba appetizers, a well-seasoned soup course with rich dashi flavor, and a bouillabaisse-style small hot pot; however, for us past our 60th birthday milestone, some of the meat was too fatty and heavy. There was also something slightly lacking—not in quantity exactly (sorry for being vague).\nBreakfast was perfect: delicious dashi in the miso soup and excellent small side dishes overall—especially outstanding dried horse mackerel.\nBoth dinner and breakfast come with rice cooked in an iron pot; ours was slightly firm with rather strong scorching on the bottom—I wondered if it could have been taken off heat just a bit earlier.\nBy making good use of time sales deals at this long-established Ryokan in Oku-Yugawara, we were able to stay with great value for money. For us it was very comfortable—a relaxing Ryokan stay we truly enjoyed. Next time we’d like to try staying in one of their 60 m² Rooms.

It was excellent.
The Onsen was great, but the food was outstanding. In particular, this Plan included complimentary spiny lobster sashimi, abalone steak, and salt-grilled ayu, as well as a 90-minute all-you-can-drink option. For this price in a Room with an open-air bath, we were very satisfied.

The meals were excellent!!!
I absolutely loved the food! The hot pot was delicious even in its simple form, and when we changed the flavor it turned into a completely different—and equally tasty—Italian-style dish. You can really feel the desire to delight guests, and we enjoyed everything, including the menu description. The foreign staff were also polite and left a very positive impression. I also liked that the seating was partitioned like private rooms. The building has many steps throughout, and there are also level changes inside the Room. The panoramic large public bath can only be reached by stairs. There are even steps in the bathing area—so please be very careful. It would be perfect if there were no steps.

We had a wonderful time as a family.
I decided to visit on a same-day Reservation. I had seen many harsh Reviews on other sites and wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m glad I trusted my instincts. I was very satisfied. Despite being a large Facility, it was thoughtfully managed in many small ways, and I enjoyed it throughout. The meals had creative touches from the chef and were very enjoyable, but the portions seemed a bit small for my high school–aged child. If the delicious rice could be served in a slightly larger amount in the rice tub, overall satisfaction would be even higher. The baths were also comfortable. It’s a rooftop open-air bath, and I had a wonderful time late at night gazing at the stars. If possible, it would be perfect to have a partially darker area so you can see the full starry sky even better. Overall, I was extremely satisfied and would like to visit again.

Highly Satisfying Dinner and Breakfast
This was our first stay in about 15.6 years. The front desk and dining area have changed since then, but we could still fully feel the atmosphere of this long-established Ryokan. We had very high expectations for the meals, and they exceeded them in both quality and taste. We enjoyed everything through dessert while taking in Yugawara’s Onsen town and literary charm. Every dish impressed us—from the seasoning and presentation to the several kinds of desserts. We would love to return in a different season. Two disappointments: The slippers and the geta-style toilet sandals were very difficult to wear. The slippers hurt our feet when worn barefoot, and they felt inconvenient for walking around the large property. Both my mother and I needed socks to wear them comfortably. The toilet sandals were also too high, making them slippery with socks on; it was very inconvenient to take off our socks every time we used the restroom. The other issue was that the indoor bath at the panoramic bath was far too hot. Since it was raining, we wanted to warm up indoors, but my mother and I—as well as three other female guests—found it too hot and decided not to enter. Overall, however, the bed was comfortable, and we liked the lobby where snacks and juice were available. Being able to purchase Koumedo’s kibi mochi was also a big plus point for us. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

The meals were delicious.
The building is a bit old, but it felt elegant and refined. Welcome drinks in the lounge were soft drinks and beer, available from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. I would have appreciated more alcoholic options such as wine. Also, when the futons were laid out in the Room, I wish more thought had been given to their placement. On top of that, there was a long hair on the futon, which made me feel uncomfortable. The explanation from the foreign staff member who guided us to the Room was a little hard to understand, and there was no explanation about the futons. I would like to see better staff training. The dining area had semi-private seating, so we could relax comfortably. The kaiseki meal looked beautiful, and I was satisfied with both the portion size and taste. Breakfast featured rice cooked in a traditional kamado stove and was delicious; I especially remember how good the dried fish was. The open-air bath had a great view and felt wonderful.

We stayed here as a mother and daughter.
I visited with my 91-year-old mother. I thought I had checked the website thoroughly, but there were many stairs inside the building, which was difficult. We chose a room with an open-air bath for my mother, but there were significant steps and no handrails, so it felt dangerous if she were to fall and we did not use it. The bedroom also had a small step that felt unsafe. Dinner was carefully prepared and delicious. Breakfast was disappointing because the miso soup was lukewarm. When my mother asked for extra pickled plum, it cost 170 yen. I felt that something like pickled plum could have been provided as a complimentary item. However, all of the staff were very kind.

Excellent dining experience
Dinner was delicious from start to finish, right through to dessert. The salt-grilled ayu was outstanding, and I was truly impressed. Breakfast was also excellent—the rice and salmon were especially tasty. The open-air Onsen on the 8th floor with a panoramic view was great, and the cold bath was spacious; I also enjoyed the sauna with its beautiful view. In the large public bath, the indoor bath temperature was just right and very relaxing. All staff were polite and wonderful.\nHowever, while check-in went smoothly, it took a very long time to be shown to my Room, and I wasn’t guided there until around 3:40 pm. I wanted to relax in my Room sooner and go to the Onsen, so that part was a bit disappointing.

The open-air bath in the Room is amazing.
After reading various Reviews, including some quite harsh ones, I was a bit worried. However, the Accommodation by Noguchi Kanko—and Tsubaki in particular—was so highly regarded that I decided to stay. The building is definitely old, but the private open-air bath in the Room was outstanding. A hinoki bath with the mountains right in front of you is truly wonderful. The bed was comfortable, but the air-conditioning noise was loud—I couldn’t sleep with it on. So I set the living room AC to maximum and went to sleep. Is there any way this could be improved? As for the meals, I’m sorry to say that compared with how amazing Tsubaki is overall, they felt about average. I asked for rice to be served first, but it didn’t come across properly, which was disappointing. The amenities are well stocked and very convenient. Oku-Yugawara Onsen is easy to access and close enough from central Tokyo, and unlike Atami it isn’t crowded with noisy young people—so I love it. I hope it stays a calm Onsen town going forward. I’d like to visit again. (I made a Reservation with an affordable Plan!)

Mountain Views
The mountain-surrounded scenery in Oku-Yugawara was wonderful. It’s not far from the station by bus, and buses run frequently, so it’s convenient—yet you’re still surrounded by mountains. You can enjoy a secluded getaway at a reasonable price. Access to Manyo Park and the waterfall was also great, and the services were very comfortable, such as the rooftop sauna, draft beer served in the evening, and incense being lit for us.

A spacious, relaxing atmosphere
From the moment you step inside the entrance, you can feel the relaxed atmosphere throughout the building. The layout of each area and the corridors are spacious, so there is no stress even when passing other guests. Both the Room and the bath were kept clean and well maintained, making this an Accommodation where we could rest with peace of mind. Some of the dining staff are international team members, but everyone provided comfortable and kind service. We chose the standard meal plan, which was just the right amount, but next time we would love to enjoy some additional menu items as well. It is also easily accessible from central Tokyo, making it a great Accommodation for enjoying seasonal nature.

The Room had a musty...
The Room had a musty smell typical of an old Ryokan, and the toilet was small, making it inconvenient to use. The window was also hard to open, there were no flowers in the alcove, and the Room felt bleak—far from what I had imagined, which was disappointing. If I had to mention something positive, the open-air bath with a sky view was nice.

I will never go again.
The Room was not properly cleaned. Dust had accumulated on the armrests. The toilet in the Room smelled bad. In addition, areas other than the toilets at the dining area on the 7th floor also smelled unpleasant. The bathing area where you wash your body had a sewer-like odor. We were asked to cooperate by settling our bill early, and we did so, but in the end we were still kept waiting just to return the key—likely because the front desk is extremely small and can only handle two groups at a time. Regarding allergies, I wrote “seafood/shellfish,” but it was changed to only “mouth-corner allergy,” and sashimi was served. I will never go again.

Wonderful Accommodation: Sansuiro
The staff were very kind, and I was impressed by their attentive service. The meals were delicious and beautifully presented—everything was excellent. The open-air bath on the 8th floor now has a sauna, so the jacuzzi tub has been changed into a cold plunge, which was a bit disappointing. I was also very disappointed that the curtains were worn out and tattered. I hope they can be replaced as soon as possible.

The concept is all over the place.
We stayed here with a couple who are friends of ours. With competition among Onsen facilities in Yugawara becoming increasingly fierce, we could feel the staff’s sincere effort to improve customer service, but the concept they were aiming for was unclear and inconsistent. The building is very old and has been renovated, but perhaps due to limitations of the original structure, it is not particularly user-friendly. The Room was very spacious, but the living area and bedroom were not connected, and we had to put on footwear to move between them. The indoor bath had no window and was very dark, so we didn’t feel like using it. I think they put a lot of thought into the meals as well, but the Japanese head chef seemed to be trying to offer something new by incorporating Italian elements; however, the concept felt unfocused and inconsistent, and we couldn’t tell what we were supposed to enjoy. The only clear highlight was the quality of the Onsen water—it felt wonderful on the skin. The rooftop open-air bath is also very pleasant. That said, it’s hard to shake the impression that the sauna was added simply because it’s trendy right now: basically only one or two people can use it at a time, and you can’t do löyly unless you call someone over. As a result, temperature control is difficult and it ended up being a disappointing sauna experience. At minimum, I wish there had been a call button installed. It was apparent that they are struggling with which market segment to target; I think they would be better off focusing on something specific—enhancing services for families with children or allowing guests to bring pets, for example. Still, several new staff members provided attentive service during our stay; that left a very positive impression on us and made us want to support them. I also think management—including the head chef—should actually stay at other Ryokan in Yugawara or Atami to learn what things are like today. Although pricing is in the mid-range, we did not feel it offered good value for money and would not consider returning. We are honestly worried about how many more years this place can last as-is—but we truly hope they will work hard and turn things around.

A Relaxing Onsen Blending into the Vast Sky
The round window in the “Jurakudai” Room is truly wonderful. The indoor bath is small, but I really appreciate that it’s an Onsen. Since the tub is concrete, after soaking a few times my bottom felt a bit sore… The panoramic open-air bath “Ozora” offers an amazing sense of openness. Repeating the sauna and cold plunge a few times, then soaking in the Onsen while gazing up at the sky—pure bliss!

As you can see in the photos, the display shelves are covered in dust and there are holes left unrepaired in the walls. It feels like they opened the Room just to accommodate guests during the holiday period.

If I had to be picky,
Overall, we were very satisfied—thank you very much. If I may make a few suggestions: 1) It would be helpful to have two Room keys (one for men and one for women) when going to the baths. 2) There is a two-person table by the window in the Room, but since three of us are staying, we would like three chairs. 3) The TV placement is hard to view. We would be happy if it were placed in the center of the back stand so everyone can watch together. We only used that stand for luggage, so that spot would be ideal. 4) The open-air bath temperature was too low, and we felt like we might catch a cold. 5) PayPay could be used inside the Ryokan, but it would be great if it could also be used to pay for the Reservation (is this handled by IKYU?).

It was very relaxing.
We stayed in a Room with an indoor bath and a private open-air bath. Although the Room is older, it was well maintained, and we thoroughly enjoyed Yugawara’s soft hot-spring water. The food was delicious as expected, and despite the many dishes, the portions were just right—we felt perfectly satisfied by the final dessert. Thank you to all the staff. We would love to stay again.

I was able to relax at a long-established Onsen Ryokan.
I visited on a weekday before the Golden Week holidays. I had read many Reviews beforehand, but personally, I didn’t find it bad. I stayed in Tokiwadai, and the Room was spacious and very clean. The scent of incense filled the entire building. Incense was also provided in the Room, but in some areas the fragrance was quite strong, so preferences may vary. As this is a long-established Ryokan, it felt like renovated areas and older sections were mixed together. The dining area in Tokiwadai was clean and private. The meal portion felt just right for a woman. It was served with many small dishes, letting you enjoy a variety of ingredients little by little. For an outside meal service it was lightly seasoned, so those looking forward to bold flavors might find it a bit lacking. The Onsen were satisfying—I used both the sky-view Onsen and the large public bath. They did feel slightly lukewarm at times. It was helpful not having to bring towels from the Room. Depending on the bathing time, the water temperature varied. There is a lot of walking and many stairs, so it may be difficult for elderly guests who need barrier-free access. The free drinks were available until late, and there was also a good selection of souvenirs. I soaked in the Onsen many times and felt refreshed. Thank you very much.

We are very sorry.
I stayed in the same type of Room for the first time in 10 years, and I was shocked at how much it has changed—it's like it has become a completely different Ryokan. In the garden outside the Room, dead trees were left as they were, and there was no sign of maintenance such as clearing fallen leaves. It seemed there were mites in the futon or the Room; I developed symptoms consistent with mite bites the morning after returning home. I assume in-room dining has been discontinued due to labor cost reductions. While that may be unavoidable, I was honestly surprised at how poor the meals were. In particular, I have never experienced a Ryokan with such an unpleasant breakfast, so it came as a shock. With hopes for future improvement, I will say not that the food was "not tasty," but that it was extremely bad. The service level from the young female staff member at breakfast was also far too poor. The rate was over 200,000 yen for one night, but at present it is not worth that price. In the past, I even repeated my stay in this same Room and felt it matched its price. I hope that someday it will improve and be reborn as a great Ryokan again. On a positive note, an older gentleman who assisted us in the lounge in the evening and a male staff member during dinner were very kind and helpful. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff members who treated us kindly.

I stayed on a Sunday in early April.
This was my first stay. I was reasonably satisfied with both the sky open-air bath and the open-air bath. However, I did not feel that the changing area was being cleaned and managed regularly. Even the way the towels were stacked looked like a messy pile. The meals were disappointing for what I paid. With an accommodation fee of over 50,000 yen, there was no menu and no explanation of the dishes—this was my first time experiencing that. Taste depends on the head chef’s palate, but everything was lightly seasoned and portions were modest. As for service, the younger staff worked hard, but it felt somewhat mechanical—far from what I would call “communication.” Both the guest room and each Facility gave me the impression of repeated renovations, but there were signs in various places that things had been left unfinished. I did feel that cleaning overall was done properly. Regarding the musty smell mentioned in other Reviews, the incense used to cover it up was very strong (so much so that when I opened my suitcase after returning home, it still smelled like incense). One more point from Reviews: I saw comments saying car settings had been changed, and mine had been altered as well (side mirror settings). Honestly, it feels unpleasant for staff to handle anything beyond what is necessary to move a car while it is in their care. *Since there are many negative points above, please delete this if possible. I hope my disappointment comes through.*
