Five-Story Pagoda and Shinkansen View
Because I place great importance on the view from the Room, I made a Reservation as it seemed like a corner Room where I could fully enjoy the scenery. When I first entered the Room, there was a building directly in front of me and I was slightly disappointed. However, as I walked further in, I was able to see a five-story pagoda that truly felt like Kyoto. It was also an impressive train-view Room where I could watch both the Shinkansen and local lines. I feel you could promote this wonderful view even more—it would be an amazing sight for international guests. The service had the reassuring quality you would expect from a long-established Hotel, and the Facility was clean and well maintained. Despite my high level of satisfaction, the price felt very reasonable. In fact, this is a valuable Hotel where you can enjoy this level of satisfaction at this price point. Because the view from my Room was so nice, I upgraded breakfast to room service by paying the difference. However, it felt expensive for what it offered, so it would have been even better if that could be improved a bit.

I wish I had been in...
I wish I had been informed in advance that IKYU Diamond member benefits would not be available. The breakfast venue was small, and the Japanese dishes were crowded together, so I couldn’t relax and fully enjoy Kyoto’s flavors.

A Room the Whole Family Can Enjoy Across Three Generations
The Japanese-Western style Room was convenient for a three-generation trip. The tatami area felt smaller once the futons were laid out, but the entryway and closet area were spacious, which was great. The bathtub was also large and comfortable. The staff were kind, especially the shuttle bus driver. Our child seemed to enjoy riding the bus, and it turned into a wonderful trip. Breakfast was a delicious buffet. It was disappointing to find dust on the bay window ledge and phone in the Room, but we were satisfied with everything else and would like to stay again.

The Room is small.
We stayed in a Japanese-Western style Room of 50 m² or more with four people, but the futons were already laid out, leaving nowhere to sit. It seems to have been renovated, but there is a lot of wasted space and it feels no different from a Room of about 20 m². Who designed this layout? The bathroom is unnecessarily large, but there is no space to relax, so I cannot recommend this Room.

Only disappointing, third-rate Hotel reviews.
[Overall] I don’t think I will ever return. This is a well-known Hotel in Japan, but honestly I was disappointed. Even at double the usual rate during cherry blossom season, the quality of service did not match—perhaps a textbook example. [Dining] Breakfast was at the revolving restaurant on the 14th floor, but we were seated at a table still left with leftovers from previous guests, and even the staff member who escorted us didn’t notice. It suggests that basic attention and checks by Hotel staff are not being carried out. During a Multiple Night Stay, the menu did not change at all, so I would like to see more creativity. [Pool / Sauna] This was by far the worst. There were many issues that felt wrong on a level beyond simple aging of the Facility. First, several staff members were unnecessarily gathered around the reception area, chatting as if they had nothing to do while “welcoming” guests. Overall circulation is poor, and even in the changing lockers area some curtains were left fluttering open—an odd space. We were told to dry swimsuits using a two-tub washing machine for staff use (and there were times it couldn’t be used because something was already inside). Generally speaking, Hotels with pools provide a dedicated swimsuit spin dryer for guests—are you saying you can’t even purchase one? (It’s comparable to telling guests to eat in an employee cafeteria, yet it seems the Hotel doesn’t even recognize how inappropriate this is.) Although closing time is 21:00, last admission is 19:00—far too early. Does this mean you don’t want guests to use it? In the morning, allowing only pool and gym use while shutting down the men’s bath/sauna is also hard to understand. (And it apparently isn’t operating around midday either—mysterious for a Hotel.) Even though we entered specifically to use the pool, staff had already drained all water from the jacuzzi and started cleaning about 1.5 hours before closing. Despite having time on their hands, announcements/operations weren’t communicated properly. Most Hotels clean after facilities close; here they began closing procedures without considering guest usage. I don’t think management—including the general manager—understands what appropriate oversight and service should look like. Also, a timer by poolside remained stopped; it’s unclear whether it was broken or intentional (does no one notice?). [Room] Smaller than expected. Even though it’s an executive floor Room, it’s around 20 m² and even the bed is narrow. The shower room/plumbing layout only works if you keep doors closed; overall it feels cramped. I stayed knowing what I was getting into, but everything feels old overall.

Kyoto Sightseeing
I stayed here while sightseeing in Kyoto, and it was wonderful—the service was attentive and excellent. I’d love to stay again if I have the chance.

Good grief.
Many employees provide service that feels like a high school part-time job, and some staff respond to questions with “Huh?” or stay silent, which is unacceptable. A few staff members do try to help properly, but the inconsistency in staff quality is concerning. We pulled up to the front by car, but the staff standing there did not move unless we spoke first—no guidance at all. What are they standing there for? The area around the toilet in the room was slightly dirty with stains, and the wallpaper on both sides had yellowed and smelled. Since I often stay at Okura hotels, it was disappointing by comparison. The family room itself was spacious, with a fairly large bathtub, and the water had little chlorine smell, which was good. Overall, it felt like an inexpensive Accommodation for Western guests. If you expect hospitality from a Hotel, you may be disappointed.

There was a strong sewage smell in the bathroom. I think it would be best to address this.

A long-established place that remains unchanged over the years.
The Room was clean, spotless, and very spacious, which made us happy. There were plenty of in-room amenities, which was great. However, perhaps because of the time we went, the breakfast line was extremely long and we were directed to another venue. We appreciated the quick response, but it was a bit difficult to go up to the second floor with my mother who has limited mobility. We would have liked a calmer breakfast experience.

Room cleanliness issues
This was my first stay at RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto, but the layout inside the Hotel was inconvenient, and the water dispenser was far from my Room and hard to find. I also noticed dust in corners of the Room and black mold around the shower area. Because I have allergies, my symptoms became quite severe. The black mold is especially noticeable when viewed from a lower angle rather than from above. The young man at the front desk was kind, courteous, and pleasant. However, the breakfast buffet had very few types of bread and almost no seasonal fruit—it was the lowest level of breakfast I have experienced among Hotels so far. Since my expectations were high, it was disappointing. It felt like a Hotel aimed more at inbound travelers than Japanese guests.

Your First Trip to Kyoto
My spouse and I stayed here. It was our first trip to Kyoto, so we did some research beforehand, but we didn’t really know our way around the city and ended up transferring between different trains and using taxis as well. The biggest deciding factor was the convenience of being close to the station, but as a Shinsengumi fan, I was also thrilled to discover there is a monument for Isami Kondo nearby—I had no idea. Since it was a Multiple Night Stay, we requested housekeeping for the next day. When we returned to the Hotel in the early afternoon, our Room had already been cleaned beautifully, which truly impressed us. Thanks to that, even after walking nearly 30,000 steps on both the second and third days, all my fatigue disappeared. Haha. The staff at the shop were wonderfully pleasant, and I ended up buying senmaizuke twice—now I’m completely hooked on pickles. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us over these two days.

Whenever I visit Kyoto, I always stay here. Breakfast is delicious! The Room is clean! The pool is fun! I will stay here again.

The service was excellent.
I didn’t have very high expectations, but the service—especially from the younger staff—was excellent, and I had a very pleasant stay. I had breakfast both at the buffet and at the seated revolving restaurant, and each had its own appeal. The seated option is better suited for guests aged junior high school and above.

A Long-Awaited Stay in Kyoto
I have stayed in Kyoto several times, but this was my first visit in five years, and it was the first time for both my friend and me to stay at this Hotel. We chose it because we were attracted by the Plan details, though we did not use the pool or gym. Right after check-in, we enjoyed the Plan benefit drinks at the bar. Only one staff member was working at the counter and seemed busy, but they kindly checked in on us from time to time as we tried our hand at the origami placed near the entrance. Thanks to their thoughtful attention, we had a pleasant and enjoyable time. As this is a historic Hotel, it is understandably a bit old, but our Room was kept clean and comfortable. We had breakfast from the buffet, which offered a wide variety of options—all delicious—so much so that we ended up eating more than we intended. Since there are surprisingly few chances to try Kyoto-style dishes while sightseeing, I was glad to be able to enjoy them at the Hotel. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

I visited Kyoto to celebrate my grandchild’s graduation. Since there were three of us, it was disappointing that the Room felt small… I would have preferred a separate bath and toilet. Both dinner and breakfast were buffet-style, so we enjoyed a variety of dishes, and everything was delicious.

The guest rooms are outdated and inconvenient to use.
As this is a long-established Hotel, I arrived with high expectations, but the Room felt outdated. Even so, I expected it to be well maintained, but the TV remote barely worked, and changing channels or turning it off was a struggle. There were no coffee cups. If instant coffee is provided, cups should be as well. There was also only one coaster when I tried to use them. Since my Room was at the very back, it was inconveniently far to go refill water. In the unit bath, there were no hand towels, and the face towels and bath towels were placed where they could only be used if you closed the door. The bathtub was also on the small side. I forgot to pick up a brush at the front desk and had to use a comb by hand instead. What was good: as a Diamond member benefit, I could use the pool and spa for free and enjoy swimming. However, while men have a bath area with washing stations and a sauna (which my husband loved), for women there were only two shower booths with just bath towels provided—this felt extremely unfair. I hope this will be improved. The all-you-can-drink buffet Plan with two meals included was good overall. I planned to have breakfast on the top floor, but since there were far too few menu items, I went to the buffet instead; however, it was average with limited fruit and desserts. I also felt that something like a welcome drink would have been nice.

Staying in a Regular Floor Train View Room (Non-Smoking)
We stayed in a Regular Floor Train View Room (Non-Smoking) with four people. As we were traveling with my mother in her 80s and an elementary school-aged child, we asked the front desk at check-in for a non-slip mat to place in the bathtub. They kindly lent us one, which was very helpful. The Room was a corner room, so we were able to spend our time very quietly.

A prestigious Hotel ...
A prestigious Hotel with highly professional staff. The Shuttle Service staff in particular were very pleasant, and it already felt like a top-class Hotel from the moment we arrived. The Room was spacious and had a separate bath and toilet, but the elevator noise was loud and I could hardly sleep. Next time I will avoid this type of Room. Also, the Room was generally dark, and the desk was not usable at all. The washroom was especially dim, making it inconvenient to do makeup. The only bright light was the bedside lamp. There are so many Room types and categories that I want to believe there are better Rooms as well... Breakfast is delicious, but extremely crowded. A noisy group of foreign guests with lots of luggage arrived on both sides of us. The breakfast staff noticed immediately and guided us to a quiet seat. Once again, I appreciated their excellent support.

Breakfast at Top of Kyoto
Thank you again for your hospitality. From the attentive guidance from the parking area to check-in, the staff’s service was close to perfect. It was my first time having breakfast on the 14th floor; the view was wonderful, all ingredients were fresh, and each carefully prepared dish was truly delicious.

The Room is clean.
They guided me smoothly from check-in, and a female staff member escorted me to my Room. She was a young woman and made a good impression. The Room was clean, with plenty of storage neatly arranged. The toilet and shower were combined, but it was spacious enough to use comfortably. The breakfast venue was on the 14th floor, and the elevator was a bit hard to find for first-time visitors. The view from the 14th floor offered a panoramic look over Kyoto, and it seemed to make one full rotation in 90 minutes, making it a relaxing place to enjoy breakfast.

A relaxing place
Every year I visit Kyoto to pay my respects at the grave, but I usually make it a day trip—staying only about two hours—and head home early to avoid traffic. This year, I wanted to take my time without worrying about congestion, so I made a Reservation at a Hotel (No Meals Included). I wasn’t there for sightseeing; I simply wandered around the Kyoto Station area, which I normally wouldn’t visit by car. The Hotel offers a shuttle bus, and since it was very windy and especially cold that day, I used it and it was a huge help. Everyone—from the shuttle bus staff to the parking staff and all the team members I met inside the Hotel—greeted me with warm smiles. It’s a very pleasant Hotel. Even without sightseeing, it became a wonderful memory. I’d like to stay again.

Anniversary Trip for a Couple
We stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was very convenient, close to Kyoto Station. The Room was spacious, and the bathroom with a separate washing area was excellent. The amenities were more than satisfactory. We enjoyed an elegant morning on the rooftop terrace for breakfast. I thought it would be nice if there were soup on the breakfast menu. We will visit again. Thank you very much. My wife was truly touched by the anniversary gift. Thank you very much.

Upper Room
Early in the morning, around 5:00 a.m., I woke up to loud thumping noises. I went to bed around 2:00 a.m., so I had hoped to sleep until about 7:00 a.m., but... The noise was coming from the Room above. I’m not sure if they were stretching or exercising, but it didn’t sound like normal walking. After that, every time I started dozing off, another loud thump would wake me up, and in the end I couldn’t sleep at all. I have stayed at this Hotel many times, but this is the first time this has happened. There are a lot of tourists at this time of year, so maybe it can’t be helped...

It’s disappointing that the cleaning wasn’t thorough.
Thank you for your thoughtful email communication and consideration before our stay with my elderly mother. However, I was surprised to find dust buildup in the hallway, in the corners of the Room, and between the bed and the side table.

We stayed on the Ann...
We stayed on the Anniversary Plan, and I can’t fully put into words how enjoyable and memorable our stay was. We are truly grateful. The shuttle bus from Kyoto Station made access extremely convenient. We used the revolving observation restaurant “TOP OF KYOTO” for both dinner and breakfast. At dinner, we were delighted by your thoughtful touches—an anniversary photo, a single rose as a gift, a message on the dessert plate, and even a whole cake. Every dish featuring plenty of Kyoto vegetables was delicious, and we enjoyed a luxurious time watching the ever-changing views of Kyoto from the gently rotating dining room. The cityscape wrapped in soft morning light and the fantastical Kyoto floating in the sparkling night view—being able to enjoy both was especially memorable. The pool and sauna available as part of our 10th-floor Room benefits were also wonderful, and we were moved by how carefully your staff responded during a small unexpected incident. I’m not very confident at swimming, but this inspired me to join a swimming club so that next time I can return able to swim properly. After dinner, we had cocktails at the bar; everything—the interior design, lighting, atmosphere, and service—was comfortable, as if luxurious time for adults flowed by slowly. Wherever we were in the Hotel, we felt a sense of security and elegance—and above all, your staff’s politeness and warmth. It truly felt like a first-class Hotel. Thank you very much for making our special day such an amazing memory. We would love to stay again.

The Facility and meals were great, but above all, the staff service was outstanding. It became one of the best memories of my trip. Thank you very much—true hoteliers. Please take care of yourselves and keep up the great work.
