Auberge Homachi Mikuni Minato
Fukui Prefecture/Sakai CityFrench cuisine by Michelin-starred chef Ken Yoshino, selected for Forbes 2026. Stay in a traditional machiya townhouse that evokes the Edo period.
Auberge Homachi Mikuni Minato has been selected for “The 30 Collection,” which honors outstanding experiences across Japan, as part of the tourism awards “Forbes JAPAN Destinations of the Year 2026,” hosted by the global business magazine Forbes JAPAN. Mikuni Minato is a historic port town mentioned in the Shoku Nihongi in 778. During the Edo period, it flourished as a port of call for Kitamaebune trading ships traveling between Osaka and Hokkaido. Ten traditional townhouses scattered throughout the area have been renovated into nine buildings with 16 guest rooms and a restaurant. The name “Homachi” comes from “homachi” (waiting for favorable winds), a term that also evokes the “reward” enjoyed in the era of Kitamaebune ships. The architecture features local kagura-style construction and preserves Edo-period pillars, beams, and Shakudani stone. Dining is created by Michelin-starred French chef Ken Yoshino, who crafts an original menu showcasing Fukui’s world-class ingredients such as Echizen crab—also presented to the Imperial Household—rare seafood varieties, and Wakasa beef. This is a dispersed Hotel concept: guest rooms are spread across nine buildings with a separate restaurant building, allowing you to enjoy not only your stay and meals but also the history of the town itself. Tojinbo, one of Fukui’s top sightseeing destinations, is about a 10-minute drive away.
The dinner and breakfast at the restaurant were both delicious and wonderful! The Room was clean and comfortable. It seems this Room can be used as a connecting room, so when a family group checked into the neighboring Room, we were slightly bothered by voices and noise, but it soon settled down. The staff were also very courteous. Thank you very much.
こきりこ85 8/8/2026I had a very satisfying stay at this Accommodation. At check-in, local sake was served as a welcome drink, and I also enjoyed tasting different varieties inside the property afterward. I found a favorite label and bought some as a souvenir for myself, which became a great memory. All of the staff were consistently polite and kind, making my stay very comfortable. The Room also had a wonderful atmosphere—an inviting space that blended beautifully with the historic townscape. One small issue was that there was a slight odor left inside the washing machine, so I chose not to use it. If this is improved, it would make the stay even more comfortable. After returning home, I realized I had forgotten my face towel and contacted them; they handled it very courteously. It arrived safely—thank you very much. This was a lovely Accommodation where you can truly feel thoughtful hospitality. I would like to stay here again when visiting Mikuni.
