A space where modern design inspired by Kyoto blends harmoniously with the charm of a historic school building.

The Gate Hotel Kyoto Takasegawa by HULIC is a Hotel renovated from the former Mototatsusei Elementary School building. It features sophisticated, distinctive guest rooms, an exclusive “Lounge & Patio” for guests, and an open restaurant on the top floor with panoramic views of the Higashiyama mountain range. While preserving the atmosphere of the former school building, the Hotel actively incorporates traditional and local culture, aiming to grow together with the community. Access: 3 minutes on foot from Hankyu Kyoto Line “Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station,” and 5 minutes on foot from Keihan Main Line “Gion-Shijo Station.”

  • My family stayed at The Gate Hotel when it first opened near Kaminarimon, and we became fans. After staying twice at The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon, time passed, and we were finally able to stay at the Takasegawa Gate Hotel, which we had long wanted to visit. Both my mother and I were deeply moved by the thoughtful hospitality; the high level of service was just as wonderful as when we stayed in Kaminarimon. Breakfast was even more delicious than expected, and we were also impressed by the attentiveness of the young staff.

  • Thank you for assigning us a 6th-floor Room with a view of Higashiyama. The views were wonderful at any time of day—sunrise, the Higashiyama scenery, and the night view—and it really heightened the feeling of being on a trip. The Room was clean and spacious, and both the sofa set facing Higashiyama and the two side-by-side sinks were very convenient to use. We also made good use of the bar on the 8th floor and the lounge on the 3rd floor. The lounge offers soft drinks and wine, but I think it would have been even better if beer were available (since Kyoto in July during our stay was extremely hot, beer would have been perfect). During our stay, what I especially enjoyed was the Noh event. Although it was a short 30 minutes, it allowed us to experience traditional performing arts, and it was a wonderful experience. It seems that a wide variety of events are held regularly in addition to Noh, which has become one of my highlights to look forward to on my next stay. With its great location and views, excellent Rooms, great lounge service, and enjoyable events, this Hotel is one I’d love to stay at again. It’s a Hotel I can confidently recommend to friends as well.

At the historic Rissei school building, shaped by the community, open the gate and begin your time.

Open the door, and your time begins—a Hotel where each guest can relax as time flows gently. From the moment you open the gate, your own time starts. This is a place filled with local pride: in the Edo period, Kyoto residences of various domains once stood here; it is where Japan’s first film preview experiment succeeded; and it is also the former Rissei Elementary School building, created through community effort and donations. We chose this location to serve as a gateway to KYOTO, coexisting with and enhancing the city’s charm. Located in central Kyoto and open to the waterside setting of the Takase River, THE GATE HOTEL welcomes you. Whether for everyday moments or special occasions, we strive to be a Hotel where you can simply be yourself. Open the door to your own time.

Flickering flames, unhurried time. Lounge & Patio

Lounge & Patio is a calm, welcoming space that blends the timeless inspiration of the former Rissei Elementary School with a modern sensibility. In the morning, it serves as a quiet lounge for personal time; in the afternoon, as a place for reading or meetings; and in the evening, it opens as a bar. At sunset, we light a bonfire in the patio and offer a marshmallow-roasting experience. A curated selection from Rissei Library is displayed on the shelves—feel free to pick up a book and enjoy some reading time. In the evening, savor comfortable conversation with free-flow house wine, accompanied by the gentle flicker of the flames.

A serene Retreat Room that preserves the memories of a place of learning.

Linking the memories of a former school building to today’s quiet calm, the Retreat Room is a dignified 60-tatami hall that carries on the legacy of the spacious room once known as the “Jikyo-shitsu” during the Rissei Elementary School era. The gentle feel of tatami underfoot, the scent of wood, and a simple, well-ordered setting naturally steady your thoughts and breathing. Here, guests can step away from everyday life and spend time in stillness. In addition to experiences that encourage quiet focus—such as sutra copying—events may also be held where you can encounter Noh chanting and dance. While inheriting the spirit of this historic place of learning, listen closely to yourself in this very moment—an inward journey of retreat, in the heart of Kyoto.
