HOTEL KOU Otsu Hyakucho
Shiga Prefecture/OtsuA traditional townhouse in Otsu fully renovated. A space where Japanese and Scandinavian styles merge.
This Hotel is a renovated collection of traditional townhouses located in the central arcade shopping district and along the old Tokaido road in Otsu. It was established with the aim of showcasing Otsu's charm to many visitors and revitalizing the local shopping district. The seven townhouses, each over 100 years old, have been comfortably renovated to ensure they can be used for another century. The interiors feature Scandinavian furniture, creating a luxurious and relaxing space that blends Japanese and Nordic styles. There are five whole-house rental types and two room-divided types with a total of eight rooms available.
I have stayed at Hotels across the whole country, but this stay was truly memorable. What impressed me first was the hospitality of the staff. It wasn’t a formal, scripted service—each person conveyed a genuine warmth that made it clear they truly love this town and this Accommodation, and I felt comfortable throughout my stay. For dinner, we went to a restaurant called “Nao,” which the Hotel recommended, and it was absolutely the right choice. It wasn’t aimed at tourists; it let us experience local charm, and it allowed us to enjoy not only our stay but also the city of Otsu itself. I think this is a unique value that comes from a Hotel that treasures its connection with the community. In the past, I also stayed with a large group at Matsumoto Jujo, another property in the Jiyujin Hotels group (I organized that trip). Matsumoto Jujo was highly satisfying as well, but personally, HOTEL Ko Otsu Hyakucho left an even stronger impression. The reason is the space and hospitality created by making use of traditional townhouses designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. Rather than simply staying at a Hotel, it felt like living in the town for a while. While preserving the character of these historic buildings, comfort is fully ensured, creating a distinctive sense of calm. It offered an appeal you can’t get from large-scale Hotels or luxury Ryokan. If you’re looking not for flashy services or extravagant Facility features but to enjoy local culture, streetscapes, and encounters with people, I highly recommend this Accommodation. It was one of those rare Hotels where staying there becomes part of the purpose of your trip.
進取のDiamond V... 6/3/2026The coffee and snacks in the lounge were very relaxing and enjoyable. What I especially loved was the machiya walking tour the next day. The guide explained everything about the machiya in great detail and also introduced some long-established local shops. It really made me appreciate how rich and fascinating Otsu is. I’m truly grateful, and I would love to come back for the Otsu Festival in October as well. I’d like to thank our guide personally—I wish I had asked for a business card. Thank you very much.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Shopping Street
The "Shopping Street Hotel" project aims to revitalize a shopping street with many vacant properties. A new social media-focused Hotel has been established in the city of Otsu, based on the concept of "Stay, Eat, Drink, and Shop in the Town." This is Japan's first attempt at "Stay-Founding," where staying at the hotel helps revive the town. By turning the Hotel into a media platform, we aim to share Otsu's charm with more people. Ultimately, we hope to energize and revitalize the shopping street. The more visitors we welcome, the livelier our town becomes!

The transformation of seven traditional townhouses into a Hotel prioritized "comfort" above all. Rather than superficial renovations, we focused on fundamental comfort by completely stripping the floors, walls, and ceilings to carry out thorough insulation and soundproofing work. The interiors feature primarily Scandinavian furniture, creating a luxurious and relaxing space that blends Japanese and Nordic styles. Each of the seven townhouses has a unique layout, furniture, and lighting design.
Group Hotel List
Satoyama Jujo
A serene satoyama rich in nature, where the stories of each season unfold. Beams and pillars that have withstood heavy snowfall, gleaming with a deep black luster. Furniture by world-renowned designers coexisting with a traditional Japanese farmhouse. Contemporary art that sparks creativity and inspiration. And above all, cuisine that embodies the vitality of nature... Satoyama Jujo is neither a secluded Ryokan nor a service-driven Hotel. "Redefine Luxury." We believe true luxury lies in experiences and discoveries.
Hakone Honbako
An interactive media Hotel themed around books. Selected as one of the Good Design Award BEST100. This is not a Hotel exclusively for book lovers. In fact, it is a place designed for those who "don't often buy books" to encounter both books and people. Enjoy a "new story" that begins with just one book.
Matsumoto Jujo
A hotel themed around "Revitalizing Asama Onsen," showcasing how a single accommodation can contribute to the local economy. The story of its establishment was featured on NHK's "Professional: Shigoto no Ryuugi." It has also been selected for the Michelin Guide's "Selected" category. We hope your stay at Matsumoto Jujo leads to new discoveries, experiences, and the creation of new values, bringing unparalleled happiness.
Oze Jujō
A hotel rooted in the accommodation frequented by the writer Ken Kaiko, located in one of Japan's most renowned hidden regions. The majestic Echigo-Komagatake, Nakano-dake, and Arasawa-dake mountains rise before your eyes, and you can spot large Iwana fish with the naked eye in the Kitanomata River. Enjoy a stay in comfortable cottages surpassing glamping, savor course meals crafted from fresh daily ingredients, and partake in seasonal activities.
