A multi-property Facility consisting of two Hotels, each featuring in-room open-air baths, carrying on the legacy of a long-established Ryokan.
Matsumoto Jujo is not a luxurious Ryokan that caters to every need. What we offer are diverse values and lifestyles. It is a "real media" experience you can feel by staying with us. Discover new knowledge at the book Hotel "Matsumoto Honbako." Experience the history of Onsen Hotel "Koyanagi," established in 1686. We hope your stay at Matsumoto Jujo leads to new discoveries, experiences, and the creation of new values, bringing you unparalleled happiness.
Set in the historic Onsen town of Asama Onsen, this was an Accommodation that lets you enjoy not just “staying at an Accommodation,” but truly “staying in the town.”The map we received at check-in was wonderful, and with it in hand we used the Accommodation as our base to stroll around the Onsen town. Rather than everything being contained within the Accommodation, thoughtful touches make the entire town part of the journey—and even Asama Onsen’s gentle atmosphere became a cherished memory. The interior is refined yet relaxed, creating a comfortable space where you can unwind without pretense. The 24-hour book space is full of clever details that make even non-readers want to pick up a book. Our child was absorbed in the ball pit, and it felt like a place where both adults and children could enjoy their own time. The open-air bath in our room was excellent, but one of this Accommodation’s unique pleasures was taking a bucket and heading out to the public bath “Koyanagi-no-Yu.” The Onsen water is soft on the skin and warms you through to your core long after your soak—so soothing you’ll want to return again and again.Dinner was an immersive experience: watching the chef finish each dish right in front of us at the open kitchen while expertly working over a wood fire. The fragrant smokiness brought out each ingredient’s natural appeal, and every plate reflected careful craftsmanship. Centered on local ingredients, the cuisine isn’t about competing for extravagance—it values savoring this land’s climate and seasons with all five senses. It stayed with us as an experience you can only have here. The curated shop inside was also appealing. It carried Okubo Brewery seasonings used at dinner as well as Jiyujin original items, making souvenir shopping fun. We were happy to buy some granola we had at breakfast so we could relive a bit of our trip back home. The staff were warm and genuine; rather than excessive service, their unobtrusive support—being there exactly when needed—felt especially comfortable.More than for those seeking flashy luxury typical of an Onsen Ryokan, this is an Accommodation I’d recommend to anyone who wants “true richness” and who wants to enjoy staying itself while connecting with local culture.Above all, true to an Accommodation created by Jiyujin, we could feel throughout our stay their commitment not just to this single place but to carrying Asama Onsen as a whole into the future. Visiting with that context makes time spent here feel even more special. It’s an Accommodation that made us want to return in another season—to meet a different face of this town.
aluquoqa 6/26/2026I had some free time, so I stayed for one night and two days. The delicious food and paired drinks, the book-filled space, and the Room with a great view made for an amazing getaway! The staff were very thoughtful and responded sincerely even to small questions, which made my trip truly comfortable and enjoyable.Next time I visit, I’d like to make more time to stay longer!

“Matsumoto Jujo” is the collective name for a revitalization project of the long-established Ryokan “Koyanagi,” founded in 1686. “Jujo” means “10 stories.” We chose this name in the hope that you will feel many stories here—and that a new story might begin for those who visit again and again.
Within the former Koyanagi grounds, you will find two Hotels—“Matsumoto Honbako” and “Koyanagi”—as well as a bookstore, bakery, and shops. Outside the grounds are two cafés: “Oyaki to, Coffee” and “Philosophy and Sweets.”
Compared with a typical Ryokan, some aspects may feel less convenient. To begin with, there is no parking on site. Parking is about a 3-minute walk from the Hotel, next to the café “Oyaki to, Coffee.” Check-in takes place at this café. After that, you will walk to your Hotel. A Shuttle Service also circulates; however, we believe that walking helps revitalize Asama Onsen.
Matsumoto Jujo is not simply a Hotel renewal project—we also aim to spark area-wide renovation.
This area renovation cannot happen without your support. The project is funded 100% by loans (+ our own capital). While many projects like this are led by local government or supported by subsidies, it is rare for an SME to take on 100% of the risk.
Matsumoto Jujo has only just begun. Your stay contributes directly to the ongoing area renovation of Asama Onsen. We invite you to become one of the key supporters of the Asama Onsen Future Plan.

Introduction of the Accommodation

The efforts of Matsumoto Jujo in regional revitalization were featured on NHK's "Professional: The Way of Work." Matsumoto Jujo is a project initiated by a small private company to spark voluntary "area renovation." It includes two hotels, "HOTEL Matsumoto Honbako" and "HOTEL Koyanagi," as well as a bookstore, bakery, shop, restaurant, and hard cider brewery. Additionally, there are two cafes outside the premises: "Oyaki to Coffee" and "Philosophy and Sweets." Located in a historic Onsen town mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, it aims to attract many visitors.

Among the two Hotels, "Koyanagi" is designed for stays with family or casual friends. Established in 1686 (Jokyo 3), "Koyanagi" carries its historical name while being a completely new Hotel inside. Each room features an open-air hot spring bath with natural flowing water, walls finished with diatomaceous earth, counters and flooring made of natural wood, and iconic furniture pieces by designers like Wegner and Finn Juhl. Another unique feature of Koyanagi is its "Baby & Kids Welcome" policy. To accommodate multi-generational stays, barrier-free rooms are also available, catering to various family needs.

"Matsumoto Honbako" is a book hotel with the concept of "Encountering Abundant Knowledge." Both hotels feature natural hot spring open-air baths in every room, but their concepts and designs differ significantly. Honbako is recommended for those in creative professions such as designers and planners. It offers a meticulously designed space with a sense of "tension." The architecture is by SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE, known for works like "ONOMICHI U2" and "hotel koé." Enjoy the space that retains traces of the old Koyanagi's "memories," blending layers of old and new.

Matsumoto Jujo is a multi-purpose facility aimed at revitalizing the Asama Onsen area. Check-in is available at the reception & café "Oyaki to Coffee," located a 3-minute walk from the hotel. Guests will receive complimentary oyaki and coffee during check-in (if it's crowded or you're too full, this service can be enjoyed later during café hours). Room access begins at 3:00 PM, but check-in is available from 1:00 PM. Arrive early to relax with a book at the bookstore or unwind in the café. Enjoy your time at Asama Onsen!
Group Hotel List
Satoyama Jujo
A serene satoyama rich in nature, where stories unfold with each season. Beams and pillars that have endured heavy snow, gleaming with a deep black luster. Furniture by world-renowned designers coexisting with a traditional Japanese kominka. Contemporary art that sparks creativity and inspiration. And above all, cuisine that embodies the vitality of nature... Satoyama Jujo is neither a secluded Ryokan nor a service-driven Hotel. "Redefine Luxury." We believe true luxury lies in experiences and discoveries.
HOTEL KOU Otsu Hyakucho
A hotel renovated from traditional townhouses located along the old Tokaido, just 2 stations and 9 minutes from Kyoto Station and close to Otsu Station. Selected for the Michelin Key "Selected" category. Created with the hope of sharing the charm of Otsu with many people and revitalizing the local area. There are 5 whole-house rental types and 2 buildings with a total of 8 rooms available.
Hakone Honbako
An interactive media Hotel themed around books. Selected as one of the Good Design Award BEST100. This is not a Hotel exclusively for book lovers. In fact, it’s a place designed for those who might say, "I don’t buy books often," offering an opportunity to connect with books and people. Enjoy a "new story" that begins with just one book.
Oze Jujo
A hotel rooted in the accommodation frequented by the writer Ken Kaiko, located in one of Japan's most renowned hidden regions. The majestic peaks of Echigo Komagatake, Nakano-dake, and Arasawa-dake rise before your eyes, and you can spot large Iwana trout with the naked eye in the Kitamata River. Enjoy a stay in comfortable cottages surpassing glamping, course meals crafted from fresh daily ingredients, and seasonal activities throughout the year.
