Established in 1888. Experience the charm of history at this accommodation loved by many literary and artistic figures.

"Shimazaki Toson Yukari no Yado Itoya" is a Ryokan established in 1888, located at the entrance of Manyo Park in the center of Yugawara Onsen. It was at this Property where Shimazaki Toson developed the concept for his masterpiece "Before the Dawn," and even today, his manuscripts and personal belongings remain preserved. Since ancient times, the Ryokan has been beloved as a regular stay for literary and artistic figures such as Duke Tokudaiji, Seiki Kuroda, Encho, and Takeo Arishima. Additionally, the February 26 Incident of 1936, where soldiers of the Azabu First Regiment under Captain Kono attacked Baron Nobuaki Makino, who was staying at the Property, remains a significant historical event.

  • I gave my elderly mother, who can go anywhere on her own, a solo trip as a gift. When she returned home, she was truly delighted and spoke very highly of the wonderful service provided by the Ryokan staff. The meals were also delicious, and above all, it seems she was able to relax completely.Thank you very much.I plan to give her another trip as a gift once more within this year, and I would appreciate your kind support when that time comes.

  • A solo trip as a woman. I booked the Room-assigned Plan, but thank you for letting me stay in a wonderfully spacious and charming Room on the second floor of the main building, a designated Tangible Cultural Property. The greenery outside the window and the birdsong were incredibly soothing.Everything was excellent—the guest Room, the cuisine, the Onsen, and the service. In a good way, it still feels just like the Showa era. The hospitality in particular was outstanding: attentive without being intrusive. There are two private baths and one public bath (on the smaller side), each with its own distinct atmosphere. Since it was a weekday, I was able to enjoy an Onsen tour with almost no waiting time. The water left my skin smooth and silky, and the temperature was just right. The dining area is not a large hall; it’s semi-private seating separated by tall partitions with music playing, so I could relax and enjoy my meal without worrying about others. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and delicious, and the portions were more than enough for me—almost too much. When I checked out, all of your staff kindly saw me off, and I felt this is truly a wonderful Accommodation that’s hard to find these days.Seeing fireflies at Manyo Park right in front of you—and having a brief chat with your elegant proprietress—also became cherished memories.I’m not used to traveling by train, but there are plenty of local buses from Yugawara Station, making it very easy to get there—and I enjoyed the view from the window as well. I would love to return again. Thank you very much for everything.
