  • I traveled with my elderly mother. The “Forest” Room was very close to the front desk, making it easy for her to get around and very comfortable. The Room was so spacious that she even complained, “I forget where I put things,” but the changing area and bath were also roomy, and the bed was extremely comfortable. It truly felt like being in the middle of a forest, so we could open the windows morning and evening (there were sturdy screens, so no insects came in), turn off the air conditioning, and relax. And even in summer my mother says her feet get cold, so she was delighted to have underfloor heating. When I asked if we could have milk for coffee instead of creamer portions, they kindly went out of their way to bring a large container from their sister property—I was really impressed! The meals were carefully prepared with elaborate dishes; all of the local vegetables and meat were delicious. The portions were just right. For my mother, the rice seemed a bit on the firm side, but I assume that’s part of the head chef’s preference—and I enjoyed it.In Gunma Prefecture, where it can be hard to find an Accommodation with few stairs for my mother to stay comfortably, we found a real gem! We would love to visit again.

  • Thank you for taking care of us on our family trip.We weren’t sure which Room to choose for four people, so we contacted the Accommodation directly. Since we were traveling with parents in their 70s, they recommended the “Mori” Room, which doesn’t require using stairs. The Room was spacious, the terrace was lovely, and there were two sinks. The open-air bath in the Room was also large—so roomy that my mother and I could relax comfortably together. We had a very comfortable stay. One small concern was the drainage flow, but overall we were extremely satisfied! The meals were just the right amount for us, beautifully presented, and everything was delicious.Perhaps because there are only a few Rooms, we were able to use the private open-air bath without overlapping with other guests. The lounge was wonderful as well, and it made us want to come back for a Multiple Night Stay to enjoy more of the Accommodation. There were books in both the Room and the lounge, and spending time reading at a relaxed pace felt truly luxurious.Since the smoking area is next to reception, “Mori” is especially convenient for smokers due to its easy access. We were told we could tour vacant Rooms, so we had a look at some others too. Each had a different layout and atmosphere, and every Room was appealing in its own way.All of the staff were very pleasant, and we had such a comfortable time! This has become one of our Accommodations that we’d love to visit again. This time I couldn’t use them because I had been drinking alcohol, but next time I’d like to fully enjoy the sauna and stone spa as well.Thank you very much for such a wonderful time!!

Onsen
The Rare Original Hot Spring of Shima: Omuso no Yu

Shima Onsen is said to have originated in the Heian period when Sadamitsu Usui, a samurai serving Minamoto no Yorimitsu, received a divine message from the mountain deity about "a miraculous spring that cures 40,000 illnesses." Our accommodation is one of the few places where you can enjoy this sacred "Gomuso no Yu," named by Sadamitsu himself.

A do-nothing Onsen getaway to soothe your summer fatigue

[A Quiet Getaway in Shima Onsen with Someone Special]
Summer is a fun season, but the heat and everyday busyness can leave you feeling worn out before you realize it.
Even on your days off, you may pack your schedule,
and think, “I took a break, but I still feel tired.”
Have you ever felt that way?
That’s why we recommend an Onsen trip—not to do more, but simply to rest.

[For Peaceful Time, Head to Shima Onsen]
Gunma Prefecture is home to famous Onsen destinations known across The whole country, such as Kusatsu Onsen and Ikaho Onsen.
Among them, Shima Onsen is not a flashy tourist spot.
There are no large Facility or bustling streets.
But that is exactly why something precious remains here:
a quiet setting surrounded by mountains,
the gentle murmur of the river,
the sound of trees swaying in the breeze,
and an Onsen long said to “heal 40,000 ailments.”
It’s the perfect place to step away from daily life and restore both body and mind.

    [Time at Shikanoyu Tsuruya]
Shikanoyu Tsuruya sits quietly in the deepest part of Shima Onsen.
Here, there’s no need to fill your itinerary.
    Soak in the Onsen.
    Savor delicious cuisine.
Enjoy unhurried conversation with someone special.
Doing nothing may be the luxury we need most today.

[An Accommodation for Two—Just for You]
Tsuruya offers 10 Rooms in total—each with a unique design.
No two Rooms are alike, so every visit brings a new experience.
In addition, 9 of our 10 Rooms feature a private open-air bath.
Without ever leaving your Room, enjoy uninterrupted Onsen time together—just the two of you.

We also offer reservable open-air baths where you can feel close to nature and seasonal kaiseki cuisine carefully prepared by our head chef—adding color and comfort to your stay.

[As Summer Ends: A Trip to Reset Body and Mind]
Shima Onsen is never showy or extravagant.
But perhaps that quietness is exactly what you need right now—to step away from busy everyday life.
    To soothe summer fatigue.
To reclaim time with someone special.
Why not savor the luxury of doing nothing in Shima Onsen at summer’s end this year?
Shikanoyu Tsuruya will provide a truly special time for both of you.
