  • Simply wonderful!

    The Room, baths, and meals were all wonderful.Both the in-room bath and the private Kashinoki-no-Yu Onsen were excellent. When I mentioned that the handle on the bath basket had come off, they responded immediately.As for the food, when I told them I have gout and can’t eat pork, they adjusted part of the meal. Every dish was delicious, and you could really tell how carefully everything was prepared. The soba was also great.All of the staff we spoke with in various situations were very pleasant, and it truly became a memorable trip.The view from the Room was amazing as well. There was a light mist over the mountains, and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery.It rained at night, but that actually made it even more relaxing with the sound of rain—I didn’t feel disappointed at all even though it rained.The American who traveled with me was impressed by everything and happily said they will definitely come again!I rarely write a Review no matter how much I travel, but Tsuruya was truly outstanding. If you’re considering a trip to Gunma, this is an Accommodation I would highly recommend—so I decided to write this Review.Next time, I’d love to enjoy the winter scenery along with the Onsen and meals. We will definitely visit again!Thank you very much.

  • This is a wonderful accommodation!

    I traveled with my elderly mother. The “Forest” Room was located very close to the front desk, making it easy for her to get around and very comfortable.The Room was so spacious that my mother even complained, “I’ll forget where I put everything,” but the changing area and bath were also roomy, and the bed was extremely comfortable.Because it truly feels like being in the middle of a forest, we could open the windows morning and evening (there were sturdy screens, so no insects came in) and spend time without air conditioning. Also, my mother—who says her feet feel cold even in summer—was delighted to have floor heating.When I asked if we could have milk for the coffee in the Room instead of creamer pods, they kindly went out of their way to bring a large container from their sister property. I was truly impressed!The meals were carefully prepared with elaborate dishes, and everything—from local vegetables to meat—was delicious. The portions were just right.For my mother, the rice seemed a bit firm, but I assume that is part of the head chef’s preference; I enjoyed it very much.In Gunma Prefecture, where it can be hard to find an Accommodation with few stairs for an elderly guest to stay comfortably, we found a real gem! We would love to visit again.

Onsen
The Rare Original Hot Spring of Shima: Omuso no Yu

Shima Onsen is said to have originated in the Heian period when Sadamitsu Usui, a samurai serving Minamoto no Yorimitsu, received a divine message from the mountain deity about "a miraculous spring that cures 40,000 illnesses." Our accommodation is one of the few places where you can enjoy this sacred "Gomuso no Yu," named by Sadamitsu himself.

    After relaxing in the Onsen, take a quiet moment in the temple hall to reflect on yourself.

    Because you are away from everyday life, why not take this opportunity to look back on your journey so far—and consider what lies ahead.

    Yakuoji Temple has long supported people’s prayers here in Shima Onsen as a branch temple of Honnoji Temple in Kyoto.

    Our Accommodation also began its history as lodging for Yakuoji Temple.
