Use of the ReFa Room (with my parents in their 80s)

All staff were very kind. We arrived early, but they let us into our Room before 3:00 PM. The building feels fairly old, but it has been nicely renovated. However, the Room key was an old-style physical key, and there were only two keys per Room. Meals were buffet-style. The tuna sashimi was fresh and freshly cut—very delicious. The tempura was also tasty and served hot, but for some reason the beef steak felt quite greasy and didn’t suit my taste. It may have been because it was a crowded day, but I felt that refills of dishes that ran out were slow. Desserts were plentiful. At the breakfast buffet, the grilled dried horse mackerel (aji) in the Japanese selection was freshly cooked and very good. The rice balls were also good, but since the pickled plum filling was sweet rather than sour, I wish that had been noted somewhere. For Western options, it would have been even better if there had been tomato juice or yogurt. We chose a ReFa Room, but unfortunately the lighting in the vanity area was dim despite how nice it could have been. That space is one large area with two sinks, a bathtub, a shower room, and a separate toilet booth; it still feels a bit dated there as well, which made it feel even darker. Since it’s such a spacious area, I also thought even one chair would have been helpful. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well. There is no bag or basket provided to carry clothes to the public bath. Towels at the public bath are available freely. The public bath was clean and seemed to be cleaned frequently, which felt great. However, for older guests it would be helpful if items like “face wash” and “makeup remover” were labeled more clearly with easy-to-read text (my mother said she couldn’t tell and ended up washing her face with body soap). Also note that what’s provided at the sinks is a comb rather than a brush; if you prefer a brush, I recommend bringing your own (there may be one in each Room—our ReFa Room had a foldable basic brush). Because we stayed during a holiday period at high rates, I’ve written these details carefully; overall though, I think this is one of the better Hotels. Many of the staff are from overseas as well as Japanian? but everyone was truly kind. It was a clean and pleasant stay. Thank you very much.

I stayed here with my daughter, just the two of us! The indoor pool was great too.

I stayed with my first-grade daughter. We chose the dinner course limited to 5:00 PM that day. My daughter loves swimming and was really looking forward to it, but after dinner (in the evening) the outdoor pool was unavailable, which was a bit disappointing. Since we could use the indoor pool, she was satisfied. I thought the indoor pool water might be warm, but it was cold (lol). As for the meal, it was buffet-style. It may have been unavoidable since it was a very busy time with many guests, but quite a few dishes were already cold, which was a little disappointing. There was also a long line at the sushi corner, and you end up waiting at least 10 minutes. For our Room, since we had a child with us, the Hotel changed us to a panda-themed Room, and my child was thrilled!! The view was beautiful, and the Room was clean and spacious—nothing to complain about. If I have another chance, I would definitely like to stay at this Hotel again.

We stayed here for a family trip. There were plenty of kid-friendly facilities such as the pool, illuminations, and a playroom, and we had a great time! Our children were thrilled and kept saying, “We want to come again,” so we were very satisfied as parents. The Onsen was wonderful, and we really appreciated having unlimited towels available at both the Onsen and the pool—it made everything comfortable and stress-free. The staff were also polite and kind. The only thing that bothered us was having to wait for the elevator at times. As for dining, there were occasional lines at dinner buffet stations where chefs cook in front of you, but it wasn’t a big issue. At breakfast, since it’s split into two time slots, there were lines during our time; however, I think that’s unavoidable during busy mornings. It was a lovely Hotel that made us want to return!

    Outstanding hospitality!

We were satisfied with everything. Neither the garden pool nor the indoor pool was crowded, so our children could play freely with floats and other pool toys without worrying about others. The layout made it easy to go straight from the pool to the bath, and we were impressed by the thoughtful touches—towels and bath towels provided in the pool changing area, and plastic bags at the bath entrance for wet swimsuits. The buffet offered a great variety of dishes, and everything was delicious. We had a birthday cake delivered to our Room, and it came properly prepared with a lighter for the candles and a sharp knife. The Onsen was also wonderful—the spacious open-air bath felt amazing. We stayed in two Rooms (a Japanese-Western style Room and a Panda Room) with four adults and two children aged 7 and 3. When we returned from dinner, futons had already been laid out in the Japanese-Western style Room. The Rooms were clean and spacious, and our children were delighted. This is a Hotel we would definitely like to return to next year!

    About the 90-minute time limit

Although we were told that dining time is limited to 90 minutes, there was already a long line at 5:00, and I believe we were seated around 5:10. Being told to leave at 6:30 felt unreasonable because it had not been 90 minutes yet. If guests who enter between 5:00 and 5:15 are required to leave at 6:30, that is not truly a 90-minute system. People eat at different speeds—some can eat quickly, while others can only eat slowly. Some guests may want to finish early to go to the pool, so not everyone will be eating for the full 90 minutes. For those who need more time, it would be appreciated if there were a little flexibility. Since some guests finish quickly, I do not think this would cause overcrowding or inconvenience other guests on weekdays. If you could better understand and accommodate different guest needs and paces, I believe everyone would be able to enjoy their meal more comfortably.

I wish I could have enjoyed it more!

One of the highlights of my first trip to Wakayama was staying at this resort & spa Hotel. There’s the ocean, both outdoor and indoor pools, an Onsen and a sauna, and since I booked a Plan with breakfast and dinner included, I wanted to enjoy everything. However, once I started the Wakayama mobile stamp rally, I ended up spending more time on activities outside the Hotel... so in the end I didn’t get to use the pool even once or go swimming in the sea. Still, the weather was great, so I enjoyed the beautiful views along with the Onsen and delicious meals. It was also wonderful to see how hard everyone at the Hotel was working—at the restaurant, housekeeping, around the Onsen area, and more. The only reason I deducted one star for Facilities is that there weren’t many elevators, so depending on the time of day there was often a wait. But since I enjoyed taking in the scenery along the way, it didn’t bother me. Thank you very much! I’d love to visit again.

The Room, the view, the large public bath, and the meals were all great!

I chose this Accommodation after being drawn to the photo of the open-air bath with a standing bath surrounded by greenery. It was very convenient that I could freely use fresh towels each time, no matter how many times I bathed. When the weather wasn’t suitable for swimming in the sea, I considered using the pool, but it was crowded with children and their guardians. I enjoyed the garden illuminations and was able to relax in the spacious Room I had seen at Reservation, with a view of Kawakyu Hotel from the window, spending time simply enjoying the scenery. Although I’m not fond of seafood, there were many dishes I liked beautifully served in small bowls, and everything was delicious. It was disappointing that check-in took a long time even though I arrived early.

    We stayed three time...

We stayed three times over three weeks (my spouse and I, our eldest son’s family, and our second daughter’s family). We were satisfied all three times. Both our eldest son’s family and our second daughter’s family (each staying on different dates) said that if they travel to Shirahama, they would be happy to stay at least one night at Shirahama Koganoi.

The meals and the bath were excellent.

Dinner—the steak and turban shell in particular—was outstanding. My daughter loved the steak and went back for seconds again and again. Every other dish was also top-notch, and we ended up eating until we were completely full. The baths were wonderful too; the infinity open-air bath was amazing and incredibly relaxing. If I had to ask for anything, I’d like the buffet dining area to be a bit brighter, and since the live kitchen at breakfast was so popular that lines formed, it might improve satisfaction even more if guests could be spread out a little better.

Although the Facilities and amenities are old, this Hotel offers excellent service and warm hospitality.

We stayed here for a 2-night, 3-day family trip to Shirahama (three of us). Overall, while the Facility and amenities are dated, the level of service and hospitality is exceptionally high. If asked whether I would recommend this Hotel to friends, I definitely would. What we liked - Free Shuttle Service from Shirahama Station. The departure/arrival times are coordinated with the Kuroshio limited express from Osaka, which is very convenient. - There are two pools—one indoor and one outdoor—and the indoor pool is open until 10:00 p.m. The indoor pool gets extremely crowded after 6:00 p.m., but our child was thrilled just to be able to swim in the evening. - The staff were very considerate. For example, when one local taxi company reduced operations starting on 8/21, they informed us when we took a taxi the day before, and also notified guests via notices in the elevator and handwritten memos. They paid close attention even to each guest’s transportation needs. - Both breakfast and dinner were excellent. We were surprised to see abalone and turban shell served at dinner. Freshly made sushi was available as much as you like. Also impressive was that even breakfast rice balls were made live on the spot by a chef (not pre-made). - The indoor bath in the Onsen has sliding windows that can be left open, effectively creating a semi-open-air bath feel—so you can really sense the outdoors from inside. A perfect setup for anyone who loves open-air baths. What could be improved - On our first night, dinner start times were only either 5:00 p.m. or 7:45 p.m.—a strict two-choice option. I understand capacity constraints, but being forced into such an extreme early-or-late choice is not something we’ve experienced at other upscale Hotels; it would be appreciated if this could be improved. - The walkway from around the changing rooms inside to the outdoor pool feels dark—too dark. Since there is such a nice outdoor pool, making this area brighter would definitely improve things.

    Summer Vacation Trip

The front desk, shop, restaurant, and pool staff were all very helpful, and we were satisfied with both breakfast and dinner. The Room we used was a Japanese-style room, and we noticed a slight odor from the carpet at the entrance. Our grandchild was very happy as well, and we would like to stay again if we have the opportunity. Thank you very much.

    Hotel with a Pool

This hotel has a pool, which makes it a good option for families with children. We chose the buffet-style meals, but the food didn’t really suit our tastes, including our child’s, so it was a bit difficult. I hope the quality can be improved.

    Your First Visit to Nanki-Shirahama

I’d been wanting to visit Nanki-Shirahama for a long time. I stayed in Osaka the night before and made a Reservation for the Limited Express Kuroshio. I’d called ahead and was told the pool and Onsen could be used from 2:00 p.m., even before check-in, so we headed there. It was very lively, with many families with small children. It was my first time in a deep open-air bath where you can stand, and walking around felt like water-walking in a pool. The building is old, but the view from the Room was amazing. Since it’s fan-shaped, I think every Room probably has an ocean view. I got great photos of Hotel Kawakyu (both in the evening and in the morning). Dinner was a two-seating buffet; we made a Reservation for 5:00 p.m., but there was already a line before it opened. It was packed, and it was tough to line up at the buffet while holding a baby or to go get food without bumping into elementary school kids running around. I kept worrying someone might get splashed with hot soup if we collided. We enjoyed sushi, salt-grilled ayu, abalone, and more. For breakfast, the freshly made onigiri (with salmon that I think was grilled on the spot) were delicious—much better for easing congestion than having everyone serve themselves rice. Overall we were satisfied, but one thing: I wish they would add more Shuttle Service buses timed to match the limited express train schedule. That’s probably why most guests are families arriving by car.

I really enjoyed my stay—keep it up!

We stayed as two families with our daughter and son-in-law, and our grandchild enjoyed everything to the point of wearing us out— the garden pool, indoor pool, Onsen, night pool, and table tennis. The illuminations were also wonderful and beautifully done. Many of the staff were from overseas; perhaps there are differences in motivation, as some seemed hesitant while others quickly stepped in to help with a family photo. I hope everyone will continue to do their best with attentive awareness and warm smiles. The building is old, but the indoor cleaning was excellent and very hygienic; the sliding glass door to the balcony was polished so well we almost forgot it was there. The meals felt like a mini version of Hotel Kawakyu—everything was delicious—but entry and waiting at the live kitchen took time. There were still items we wanted to try, but we ran out of time, and dining felt rushed due to staff focusing on turning over for the next seating. With a few ideas and improvements, I believe it could be even better.

    My three-year-old grandchild’s birthday

We requested a birthday cake for our three-year-old grandchild at dinner. Since it was a buffet, it was difficult to coordinate the timing for all seven of us to be seated, and the staff were incredibly helpful. Two female foreign staff members kindly sang “Happy Birthday” and took lots of photos for us. Our whole family was truly moved. Thank you very much. We also really enjoyed the pool. Best of all, we could use the Onsen towels at the pool as well, and being able to spin-dry our swimsuits in a simple dehydrator was a huge help. The view from our Room was amazing too. Our three-year-old grandchild even cried after we got home, saying they didn’t want to go back home, so I think they had an amazing time. We would love to visit again in summer. Thank you very much.

We were extremely satisfied with this Hotel!

We stayed here on a family trip with children. From the moment we arrived by car, the staff welcomed us with warm smiles, and their service was excellent. We stayed from Friday, and it was very lively. The pool our child had been looking forward to was connected to the baths, making it easy to get around. Towels were provided at both the pool and the baths, which was a huge help. The Hotel buffet was crowded as well, but there was a great variety of dishes. Our family members all have different food preferences, but everyone was very satisfied. Many items—such as sushi, sashimi, and grilled fish—were plated for you individually, so we felt that the sectioned buffet plates were a bit awkward to use. At night there were illuminated displays too, which delighted our child. Thoughtful touches throughout the Hotel made our stay very comfortable. When we were leaving, our 6-year-old daughter even tried to find the male staff member who had greeted us so she could say goodbye (sadly she couldn’t!). It’s close to Shirarahama Beach, Adventure World, and Toretore Market as well—this is a Hotel we’d like to use again on our next trip to Wakayama. Thank you!

Although it is a non-smoking room, it smelled of cigarette smoke.

Even though I requested a non-smoking Room, it smelled of cigarettes as soon as I entered. The meals and bath were good, which made it very disappointing. For a non-smoker, it was truly unbearable.

The welcome drink of plum wine was a delightful touch!

We stayed here for my husband’s birthday. The welcome drinks—plum juice and plum liqueur—helped us unwind after our trip! After that, during the foot massage, we were told that toxins would be released easily today and to drink plenty of water. In hindsight, it might have been better to go easy on alcohol with dinner. Both the Onsen and the meals were buffet-style, with a wide variety of options, and the sweetfish was especially delicious. Thank you very much.

    Our Relaxing Retreat

I stay here regularly. My sister has difficulty walking, and she really likes the open-air bath that can be used while standing. The meals are varied and delicious. The garden illuminations are charming and change with the seasons, which we always look forward to. We have stayed here many times.

    I had a relaxing stay.

We stayed over the weekend. The Room is a bit dated, but it was well maintained and felt clean. The Onsen and sauna were excellent. One thing: the open-air bath and cold bath have no roof at all, so on Sunday morning when it was raining, we couldn’t relax on the bench after the sauna, which was disappointing. It would be nice if there were a roof over the bench. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. At checkout, the payment line was unusually crowded. I think it would be fine to pay the Hot Spring Tax in advance.

    Second Visit

I stayed here for the first time in about five years. I was amazed at how good the buffet was last time, and it was delicious again this time. We had a 2-year-old with us, and they enjoyed running around at the illumination venue. Our Room overlooked Tanabe Bay rather than Shirarahama Beach, but the view was wonderful. The large public bath was quite a walk away, and since I had hurt my foot, it was a bit tough.

We were extremely satisfied with our trip.

We stayed with two elementary school boys. The Bay Suite Room was as spacious as two Rooms combined, so the four of us could relax comfortably with plenty of space. With an Onsen and an indoor pool, and a late checkout at 11:00, we were able to enjoy both the pool and the Onsen after dinner on arrival day and again after breakfast on departure day. Since the pool and the Onsen share the same changing room, it was very convenient to go straight from the pool into the Onsen. As for meals, dinner left a particularly great impression. There was a wide variety of options, and we also enjoyed dishes unique to the Wakayama area. Breakfast was honestly neither especially good nor bad, but since we had eaten plenty the day before, it wasn’t an issue. The kids are already saying they want to come back again. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

It was a bit lively ...

It was a bit lively because Yomiuri TV was filming that day, but as always, the food was delicious and we were able to relax and enjoy the Onsen. The buffet is nice too, but the meals at “Kamishima” are also excellent, so I think they could promote this more. We’ll probably choose this again next time.\nI also feel grateful for the small souvenir we received as a participation gift from the filming. We were already happy to have gained another memorable moment—thank you.

It was very good, but the noise echoed.

The service and the view from the Room are excellent, and I stay here every time. However, noise from the floor above—doors closing and footsteps—carries quite a lot. This time, voices from the next Room continued until 2:00 a.m., and I couldn’t sleep. If it’s noisy again on my next stay, I may consider switching Hotels. It would also be helpful to have grab bars in the Room toilet. The staff service and the view are truly wonderful.

We had always stayed at a particular place before, but this was our first time staying here. We were able to relax and take it easy.

A stay to celebrate my birthday. Thank you for the lovely small gift and the Room upgrade. The view from the 9th floor was great, and the Room was very quiet and comfortable. The room number sign on the doorknob and the Room key had a wonderfully retro feel. Meals were buffet-style for both breakfast and dinner, and everything was delicious. Especially the breakfast rice balls... A lovely staff member made them for us, and they were a tasty, easy-to-eat smaller size. The bath was also great—the standing open-air bath was unusual, and I could relax for a long time. I stayed here 27 years ago as well... It brought back memories, so I took photos in the same spot. Both the Room and garden were beautifully maintained, and all of the staff were pleasant to deal with, making it a wonderful anniversary.
