A Relais & Châteaux Onsen Accommodation nestled in Tobira Onsen, a hidden gem of Shinshu

"Tobira," an intriguing name that evokes mystery, brings to mind phrases like "The Door of Truth" or "The Door of Beauty." Nestled in the untouched embrace of mountains and the Usukawa Valley, Tobira Onsen lies beyond Tobira Pass, as if hiding life's happiness. Located southeast of Matsumoto City, it sits at an elevation of approximately 1,050 meters. In spring, vibrant red azaleas bloom amidst lush greenery, reflecting the simplicity and sincerity of human nature. During summer, visitors seeking cool retreats or hiking adventures to Utsukushigahara and Mount Hachibuse bring a lively atmosphere to the tranquil valley. Yet even then, quiet rooms with refreshing breezes attract those who come for peaceful reading. Autumn transforms the mountains into a fiery display of crimson leaves—an enchanting scene reminiscent of Bonnard's paintings. I also cherish winter in Tobira. Resting by a kotatsu after reading for hours while listening to the gentle sound of mountain streams creates moments where distant murmurs or songs seem almost real—a delightful illusion. Though I do not drink alcohol myself, I imagine that sharing sake with close friends around a kotatsu during winter at Tobira Onsen must be extraordinary. Tobira is a haven for hardworking individuals and their families—a place for warmth and joyful gatherings. It remains untouched by those who view Onsen merely as places for indulgence without deeper appreciation.

  • During our previous stay, both my wife and I were captivated by the charm of Myojinkan, and this time we returned for a long-awaited Multiple Night Stay to celebrate my wife’s birthday. I had always thought, “Someday I’d like to stay multiple nights,” and it exceeded our expectations by far. Over two days, we discovered the atmosphere of the Accommodation that we hadn’t noticed in just one night—the stillness of the forest, the murmur of the stream, the gentle flow of time… We even forgot to check the clock. Completely freed from everyday busyness, it was two days that truly Cleared both mind and body. Precisely because it was a Multiple Night Stay, we felt we could fully savor what Myojinkan cherishes: “the luxury of doing nothing.” This time, we enjoyed Japanese cuisine for the first time. The French meal last time was wonderful as well, but Japanese cuisine moved us in a different way. Each dish’s dashi was genuinely delicious, and every course carefully brought out the natural flavors of its ingredients—we found ourselves looking at each other again and again saying, “This is so good.” Rather than being flashy, it was deeply flavorful and delicate food that reminded us anew of how profound Japanese cuisine can be. Of course, the Onsen remained just as exceptional as ever. We soaked many times while admiring scenery that changed with each time of day, feeling healed in both body and mind. Above all else, your hospitality was once again warm and effortless, giving us a comforting sense that “we’ve come home.” No one ever seemed rushed during our stay; yet every detail was thoughtfully attended to. It made us realize once more that this Accommodation’s comfort comes from each staff member’s character. This is a special place for us—an Accommodation not merely “to stay,” but a place to restore oneself. We will return in another season to experience this forest air and Onsen again—along with your delicious food and everyone’s smiles. Thank you very much for everything.

  • It was a thoroughly satisfying stay in every way.Vivid fresh greenery filled the entire view from the room’s window, like looking at a perfectly framed painting. The Onsen offers three types of baths—a large public bath, a standing bath, and a lying-down bath. The scenery from the standing bath was especially beautiful, and I ended up soaking for as long as I liked without noticing the time. For meals, we enjoyed French cuisine for dinner and Japanese cuisine for breakfast; both were excellent. From the front desk to the restaurant, the staff’s service was friendly without being overly formal—very attentive and truly pleasant.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Facilities

Welcome to the land embraced by trees.

We are delighted that you found this accommodation nestled deep in the mountains. Address: 8967 Iriyamabe, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Altitude: 1,050 meters Established on June 1, 1931 (Showa Year 6). In 1964, the surrounding area was designated as Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park. There are no houses upstream from here. Drinking water is drawn from Anaguchizawa and Wasabizawa streams. Leftover food is processed into compost using a food waste processor. This compost is used in Myojinkan's fields to grow ingredients for our cuisine again. Going against nature rarely works well—this is something we have learned over more than 80 years of running this accommodation in this location. You may encounter insects flying around; please understand as we are surrounded by nature in the mountains. If you find it troublesome, feel free to contact the front desk—we will assist you immediately. Since our establishment, we have witnessed Japan's history over the past 80 years from atop these mountains. During Japan’s period of rapid economic growth, ryokans were often used for corporate retreats and leisure trips. Recently, more guests visit with close friends or companions. The number of female guests has also increased. Some guests have been visiting us every year for over 20 years now!

The Four Seasons of Tobira Onsen Myojinkan

Greetings from Myojinkan

Located at an altitude of 1,050 meters, Myojinkan has been welcoming guests for over 80 years. We value the harmony of Japanese hospitality, allowing you to maintain your privacy while feeling a sense of connection like close family. Enjoy unique experiences that can only be found here.

Our Commitment at Tobira Onsen Myojinkan

- The facility features various handcrafted artworks and art objects created specifically for Myojinkan, adding a touch of refined warmth to the space. - Since its establishment in 1931, we have embraced the concept of "local production for local consumption." Our meals feature seasonal local vegetables nurtured by Nagano's rich natural environment, including produce from our own Tobira Farm. - Guest rooms are designed with health-conscious materials such as diatomaceous earth walls that purify the air, solid wood flooring, charcoal laid beneath the floors, and organic linen bedding.

Tobira Onsen Myojinkan - Philosophy of Relaxation

■ 1/f Fluctuation ■ A harmonious state of "regular" and "irregular" elements in nature is called "1/f fluctuation." It is deeply connected to relaxation—like the calming effect of listening to the sound of flowing water. This mechanism, known as "1/f fluctuation," allows our biological rhythm to resonate with natural sounds, helping balance the autonomic nervous system and stabilize the mind. Immerse yourself in the Onsen at Tobira Onsen Myojinkan or take a stroll while experiencing the soothing 1/f fluctuation created by nature. ■ Phytoncide ■ Forest bathing refreshes both body and mind. Many have experienced a sense of clarity and invigoration in forests. This effect comes from phytoncides—chemical substances released by trees with antibacterial properties, emitted when plants are damaged. Tobira Onsen Myojinkan is a secluded accommodation nestled within a national park surrounded by trees. Feel the healing energy of nature here. ■ Your Own Beta-Endorphins ■ Smiling activates your parasympathetic nervous system, releasing beta-endorphins—a hormone associated with happiness and enhanced immunity. At Myojinkan, we focus on creating an environment where guests can feel nature's healing energy and enjoy moments filled with smiles. Through our cuisine, treatments, and hospitality, we aim to support your journey toward relaxation through smiles. Helping you smile is our secret to ensuring you experience true rejuvenation during your stay with us!
