Kinugawa Onsen After a Long Time

After seeing a post on social media about Asaya’s buffet, I made a Reservation right away. I don’t usually eat much, so I rarely choose buffet dining, but this buffet was excellent. During the Strawberry Fair, we could enjoy all-you-can-eat delicious Tochigi strawberries, and the other fruits were also very tasty. There was a wide variety of dishes such as piping-hot pizza and pasta, and everything was well seasoned. The desserts were plentiful and delicious as well. We could order alcohol by the bottle, which felt like great value. The staff were attentive too, checking that ice and water didn’t run out, so we had a wonderful time. I was able to try all three baths and relax at my own pace. The panoramic open-air bath had a beautiful mountain view. It was a fun trip for the four of us—my friends (a couple) and me—and everyone was very satisfied. This is an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

For my first stay, I chose the Shuhokan VIP Suite (Japanese-Western style room).

This was our first time staying at Kinugawa Onsen Asaya, and since we visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine every year, we have previously stayed at places such as Fufu Nikko and Kinugawa Park Hotel. All of them were wonderful, and this time the Shuhokan VIP Room at Asaya was also absolutely outstanding. Not only the Room, but also the food, the Onsen, and the hospitality were excellent. One area that could be improved for families with children is the equipment throughout the game arcade. It was the only place that didn’t feel exciting, with games and prizes that seemed decades old. Since people tend to spend more freely while traveling, both children and adults actually spend quite a bit at arcades, so it could be a win-win. Also, the towels laid out inside the sauna stayed wet all the time. Even when staff came to check on the Onsen area and entered the sauna, they did not tidy up things like disheveled towels. Improving this would make it even better.

    Stay for an anniversary trip

Dinner was as highly rated—very delicious! Since it was only 90 minutes, it felt a bit rushed. I would be happy if it were at least 120 minutes. Sorry to say, breakfast was a little disappointing. It was held in a different venue from the dinner venue. Items like the sausages were cold... There wasn’t much I found tasty, and I really felt the gap compared with dinner. I noticed some guests had breakfast in the same venue as dinner—how is that decided? Does the menu differ depending on the venue? If so, it felt unfair because there was no option to choose at Reservation or check-in... There are several Onsen baths, so it didn’t feel too crowded and I could relax. Other than breakfast, I was very satisfied!

This was my seventh stay, and each time has been an unforgettable experience.

This time we stayed in the Imperial Suite in Shuhokan. Last time we stayed in the Imperial Suite in Hachibankan, and both were wonderful. At Shuhokan, the Japanese-style room is separate, which was a nice change of pace. The buffet gets better every time we visit. We’ve been coming for over 15 years, and it has both consistent quality and continued improvement. This time, the strawberry fair was especially great. The baths and sauna are excellent. If I had to mention anything, it would be convenient to have towels available in the bath area, and I’d like the sauna hours extended by another 30 minutes. Also, if karaoke could open from early afternoon, it would be great for daytime use when staying two nights. We’ll be back!

    As expected.

I’m a Tochigi resident, but this was my first visit. As expected of the top-ranked Accommodation in Eastern Japan, the Facility was spotless and all the staff did an excellent job. The highly rated buffet offered so many delicious options that I couldn’t possibly try everything. I actually left something behind in my Room, and your follow-up support afterward was outstanding as well. I’d love to visit again.

    Very satisfied

The grand, open-atrium lobby right after entering the property was truly luxurious, and it made our arrival feel special from the very first moment. The buffet offered an impressive selection of over 100 items, and since the strawberry fair was being held at the time, we enjoyed plenty of strawberries. Everything was delicious—from steak, tuna, crab, sukiyaki, and sushi to desserts—and we were completely satisfied. Breakfast also had a great variety of rice accompaniments; there were so many options that it was impossible to try everything in just one night. The baths were very relaxing, with well-managed water temperature that felt just right. Even the changing area was thoroughly cleaned, so it felt hygienic and comfortable to use. The Room was clean and we had a comfortable stay. The view from the Room wasn’t quite as impressive as we had expected, but even so, it still felt like excellent value for money. Overall, this was a wonderful Ryokan where we could relax comfortably—exactly as highly rated. We would definitely love to return again.

I’m so glad I was finally able to visit.

I was finally able to visit Asaya Hotel, which I had always wanted to stay at. Snow was forecast, but we arrived without any issues. Despite the cold, young staff members welcomed us outside. The Room, meals, and baths were all excellent—better than expected—and we were extremely satisfied. My husband wasn’t very enthusiastic at first, but he ended up loving it so much that we have already completed the Reservation for our next stay. There is just one thing I’d like improved: the in-house loungewear. Having to take it off and put it back on each time to use the three different bath areas is a bit inconvenient, so I would appreciate it if that could be improved. We’re looking forward to our next stay.

Truly worthy of being the top champion in the East.

This was my third stay, and the consistently high quality makes it easy to understand why it’s so hard to secure a Reservation. The guest rooms and amenities may be average for this class, but everything is very clean and there’s nothing lacking or excessive. While many Hotels and Ryokans have shown some decline lately due to staffing shortages, the service here has maintained its quality remarkably well. The Onsen and baths include a rooftop open-air bath, as well as options in both Building 8 and Shuhokan, so you can choose based on your preference. As for the Facilities and equipment—needless to say, they’re simply outstanding. We chose the buffet dining, and both the variety and taste were beyond reproach. I think both children and adults will be completely satisfied. It’s a place I definitely want to visit again.

A Hotel I Always Wanted to Stay At

This was a hotel I had wanted to stay at for years, and I’m glad I finally had the chance to visit. Upon entering the hotel, I was overwhelmed by its impressive design. The sound of a pipe organ playing as background music made me feel it was worth coming even before check-in. Although there were many guests waiting despite it being a weekday, we waited comfortably on lovely sofas with welcome drinks and snacks while admiring the beautifully displayed Hina dolls, so the wait didn’t bother us at all. However, one of the younger staff members who greeted us gave a rather impersonal greeting that left me thinking "Huh?"—a bit disappointing for such a high-end hotel. Proper training would be appreciated in this regard. The room felt somewhat dated but was clean and not dark or gloomy at all. The cleanliness of the bathroom might have contributed to not noticing its age much. However, comparing our door with that of neighboring rooms made me wonder if differences in price accounted for this feeling of age. The Onsen wasn’t as spacious as expected but featured an elegant boat-shaped open-air bath which was delightful. It would have been nice if there were signs indicating whether the room’s bath used Onsen water or not. The meals were absolutely delicious! The tableware was beautiful too, making it visually enjoyable as well. There were more dishes than expected and several types of hot pots available—including sukiyaki and curry—all incredibly tasty. Since it was Hina doll season, their displays throughout added charm and enjoyment to our stay. The souvenir shop stood out compared to other hotels—it was larger with more variety in products which we appreciated. A small detail but worth mentioning: having plenty of hangers in the room proved very helpful—these little touches matter! This became a wonderful memory from our annual family trip!

    First stay at Asaya ...

First stay at Asaya The reception and service upon arrival were excellent. Although I did not use most of the Facility, I felt it was a relaxing place to stay. Both dinner and breakfast were buffet-style, but honestly, I was dissatisfied. Fried items, in particular, were generally overcooked; for example, the fried shrimp skewers resembled dried shrimp on skewers. At this point, I cannot recommend the buffet dining option.

    Accommodation Reviews

Stayed in a twin Western-style room at Shuhokan on a weekday. ■ Room and Facility While not the newest hotel or facility, everything was clean and exuded retro charm. Both the room and the entire hotel were excellent. The room faced the mountain side, but we were given a higher floor, offering a great view. I would rate both aspects 4.5 stars each, totaling 9 stars. ■ Service The service was exceptional. In large-scale hotels, issues like inconsistent service, staff shortages due to cost-cutting measures, or chaos during meals can occur even in luxury hotels. However, there were no such shortcomings here—check-in guidance and meal services were flawless and very reliable. ■ Bathing Facilities The large public bath and sauna are delightful features, but the rooftop open-air bath is truly outstanding. It wasn’t too crowded; I could relax for an extended time as the water temperature wasn’t overly hot. ■ Dining Buffets often bring to mind issues like food running out, dishes being cold or unappetizing, or long lines forming—all of which create negative impressions. However, this buffet had no shortages; everything was freshly prepared and delicious with minimal waiting times. It’s fantastic—the best hotel buffet I’ve ever experienced. ■ Overall Satisfaction Completely satisfied with no complaints whatsoever! Considering today’s circumstances regarding pricing trends—it feels justified when thinking about maintaining such high-quality service and dining experiences here. In future stays at large-scale hotels with buffets elsewhere—I might find myself comparing them to this hotel's exceptional standards!

    Excellent

I usually stay at Hachibankan, but this time I stayed at Shuho-kan. It was excellent and absolutely wonderful. The buffet was great with a wide variety of dishes, though I couldn’t try everything, I was very satisfied. The sukiyaki wasn’t the best, and the crab was a bit too salty. However, the tempura and steak were incredibly delicious. The strawberry fair was also delightful. The open-air bath was lovely as well. This is actually my fifth visit as a repeat guest, and I would love to come back again!

    Hmm...

I visited the renowned Asaya for the first time! The Room with an open-air bath, amenities, and lounge were all excellent. However, I was shocked by how disappointing the food was. Breakfast was relatively better, but for dinner, including desserts and a variety of dishes I tried, there wasn’t anything I found delicious. The quality was terrible. The steak had a rubbery texture, and the sushi rice wasn’t good at all. It felt truly unacceptable to me. Due to the dining experience alone, I don’t think I’ll be returning here again—definitely not planning a second visit.

    Perfect score overall.

I stayed at Asaya, a place I had always been curious about. Being a large hotel, I wondered what it would be like, but everything exceeded my expectations. The spacious lobby features comfortable sofas, and in the evening, you can enjoy automatic performances of the pipe organ. The game center is well-equipped, making it enjoyable for families with children even during nighttime hours. The souvenir shop offers a wide variety of items, leaving you spoiled for choice. The bath in the room was already filled with water—and it's Onsen! It stayed warm throughout my stay and was very convenient. Meals were served buffet-style. In the evening, there were delicious crabs available; trying all the dishes was quite a challenge! The entire accommodation was very clean and comfortable. Thank you very much!

    Thank you for your patronage.

A one-night senior trip with my sister. We were completely satisfied with everything, including the Onsen, meals, and the cleanliness of the Hotel. After the trip, I realized I had left something in the Room and contacted them. They immediately checked and sent it to my home by mail. All the staff were very pleasant, and I can understand why it is called "the Yokozuna of the East." Next time, I would like to bring my parents along. Thank you very much!

I had high expectations because of the great reviews, but...

Stayed for my wife's birthday. The high ratings raised our expectations, and the open atrium upon entering was truly breathtaking. Most guests seemed to be younger, and the female staff at reception were very accommodating, which heightened our anticipation—but that was about it. First, we used the bath. While having two saunas was a nice touch, the water temperature felt slightly lukewarm. There was a foot massage machine available, but I would have appreciated a full-body massage chair as well. The outdoor baths consisted of four small tubs; if others were already using them, it felt a bit awkward to join. Our room was on the 11th floor but didn’t offer much of a view. It was clean and fairly standard overall. Some snacks were provided in the room; however, there were no welcome drinks in the fridge. During the night, my mouth became extremely dry—possibly due to air conditioning—and I woke up feeling parched with no vending machines nearby for drinks. The buffet we had been looking forward to offered many options but lacked standout dishes that left an impression. Sashimi and sushi selections were particularly limited and underwhelming. Considering this is Tochigi Prefecture, including local specialties like lemon milk or gyoza might enhance variety and appeal more to guests. The drink bar cups seemed quite small—perhaps designed for children? This required frequent trips for refills. The open kitchen staff appeared somewhat unenthusiastic with few smiles visible during service—a detail that stood out negatively compared to other attentive staff who promptly cleared plates from tables efficiently throughout meals making dining comfortable overall though breakfast buffet tasted better than dinner personally speaking! Lastly receiving receipt folded directly handed over without envelope struck odd given experiences elsewhere previously encountered across accommodations visited before now possibly cost-saving measure yet came across slightly stingy disappointing suggestion envelopes placed nearby optional use future improvements anticipated hopeful return someday!

I have made a reservation for next year.

This was my first time visiting Kinugawa Onsen, and I used it as a base for sightseeing in Nikko. The hotel is large-scale with many guests, but thanks to the two large baths and the rooftop open-air bath, I could enjoy a relaxing soak without feeling crowded. The onsen was just right for me at slightly under 41 degrees Celsius, colorless and transparent, with two types of saunas available. The towels were finely textured and likely 100% cotton; razors were high-quality with double blades by Schick. Both the changing room and bath area were clean and well-maintained. The buffet was top-class without any complaints. Generous servings of large crabs were constantly replenished, along with a variety of seafood dishes like tuna sashimi that I love—all delicious! For dessert, they even had Häagen-Dazs ice cream. I’ve already made a reservation for May next year. Looking forward to staying again!

    Disappointing

The Facility and service were excellent. The buffet had a wide variety of dishes, but the taste of each was completely disappointing. If you have no expectations at all, you might find it somewhat satisfying. The futon in the Japanese-style room was heavy, thick, and very uncomfortable to sleep on.

    Premium Lounge?

I stayed in the Miyabi Room. I was very satisfied with the bath and the room. I love Refa beauty appliances, so I was delighted to find one in the room. However, the Premium Lounge, which was supposed to be a special feature, was disappointing. With "Premium" in its name, I expected a spacious area with beautiful views, but it felt very cramped and closed off without any windows. Honestly, it made me question what "Premium" really means. The meals offered a wide variety of options. Alcoholic beverages were available for an additional charge and ordered at your seat. The milk and salmon roe in the morning were delicious.

While retaining the traditional Hotel atmosphere

My first visit to Kinugawa was prompted by a recommendation from nearby relatives. I usually don't stay at large-scale accommodations, so I was surprised by the numbered check-in system—it felt like a hospital. Arriving a bit early might help you avoid waiting. (Parking spaces near the entrance also fill up quickly, so arriving early is recommended for those traveling by car.) The lobby features an open ceiling, giving it a luxurious feel, but combined with the elevator design and overall atmosphere, it exudes a nostalgic Showa-era hotel vibe. The game center and karaoke facilities add to this charm with their retro appeal—something you won't find in modern hotels or ryokans built in the Reiwa era. The view from the room was great. Even overlooking abandoned buildings had its own unique charm for me personally. The private onsen in the room was reasonably comfortable as well. The bed and TV (movable towards the bed) were large, and I appreciated that part of the room had tatami flooring—it felt very relaxing. Amenities were well-stocked, and equipment like hair dryers had a modern touch reflective of Reiwa standards. The balance between updating certain aspects while preserving others was well thought out. As for meals, we opted for a buffet since we were traveling with an infant. A staff member noticed our baby couldn't sit up yet and kindly brought over a basket where we could lay them down—this thoughtful gesture stood out to us! However, while they provided bedding such as futons and pillows for babies, these items were heavily stained to an unacceptable level; "dirty" would not be an exaggeration here. We ended up using our own blanket as we couldn’t let our baby sleep directly on them—this definitely needs improvement. Regarding food quality itself: while not particularly memorable taste-wise, there was an impressive variety including hot pot dishes that made browsing through options exciting and fun! We couldn’t try everything during one stay which left us wanting to return again just to explore more of what they offered. Overall: In today’s competitive landscape filled with luxury hotels or ryokans popping up everywhere—it may not stand out as exceptional—but this accommodation successfully blends retro nostalgia with renovations that make it satisfying enough overall! For two adults at just under 100,000 yen total cost—I’d say it met expectations reasonably well!

The facilities and baths truly lived up to the reputation of "Asaya." Everything was impeccably clean, providing a sense of cleanliness. For meals, we chose the buffet. While the ingredients were significantly better compared to other ryokans, we were dissatisfied with the cooking and seasoning. The tempura batter could have been thinner and crispier, and overall, the Chinese dishes were not tasty. However, we were impressed by the wide variety of options available. We stayed for multiple nights but couldn't try everything on offer. In hindsight, one night should have been dedicated to a kaiseki meal instead of the buffet. We look forward to visiting again!

    Please provide a samue.

The meals are always delicious. I love the indoor onsen with a view, and this is my third stay. The room also feels very clean. However, I would prefer samue instead of yukata for the indoor wear. Samue would be more comfortable during meals as it doesn’t feel tight or come undone easily, allowing for a relaxed experience. Sleeping in a yukata can also be uncomfortable as it tends to come undone during sleep. Since this was my third stay, I brought my own pajamas this time. I understand that changing all the clothing might be challenging, but if you ever consider making changes, I hope samue will be one of your options to consider. Looking forward to staying again!

This is my second stay, and it is a very wonderful Hotel. However, the steak was more tender last year—perhaps this is due to rising prices? Also, since there was melon among the fruits, I wished there had been prosciutto as well. The bath was not crowded, and I was able to relax very much.

Thank you for hosting us on our wedding anniversary. The room, meals, and staff were excellent, and we would love to visit again. However, one disappointment was the celebratory whole cake we reserved (though it was an external product and not directly related to Asaya Hotel, as the order was made through your website). It was shipped frozen, but perhaps due to poor defrosting or product quality, the strawberries on the cake were watery and mushy. This was our only regret. As Asaya Hotel's desserts are reputed to be delicious, we hope you can consider offering custom-made cakes in the future. Once again, everything else was truly wonderful—thank you for taking care of us!
