An Accommodation You’ll Want to Visit Again

This was my first stay, and I was very satisfied. The buffet offered a wide variety of dishes with excellent quality, and I appreciated how promptly empty plates were cleared away. There were several ice machines with water dispensers, and the Room also had a pitcher for cold water, so it was nice to relax in the Room and rehydrate after a bath. Overall, it’s a great Accommodation with a strong sense of cleanliness and hospitality.

    Best value for money

Totally understand why everyone recommends this Hotel!! I was blown away the moment I walked in. The Room and the bath were both great!! I’d been looking forward to the buffet, but there was so much I wanted to try—it was a struggle lol The breakfast buffet the next morning was amazing too lol The only downside was that the view from the Room had a lot of abandoned buildings, and it got so dark at night that it felt a bit scary…

    An Unforgettable Stay

Your luggage can be loaded onto a cart and taken to your Room, and the staff will collect the cart afterward. There were welcome snacks in the lobby, and a free 24-hour drink server as well. The starry sky seen from the open-air bath at night was amazing. The large public bath has several showers with different types of showerheads. The locker area in the bath was always spotless. The Room was also clean, and there were so many kinds of delicious dishes that I couldn’t finish them all—just looking at them was exciting. At night there was a bingo event, plus a small library, game corner, karaoke, etc.—there are plenty of Facilities to enjoy inside the Hotel. Please also try the crossword puzzle in your Room. There are escalators from the 6F lobby up to the 8th floor. I have stayed here several times before, and I was very satisfied again this time. I would like to stay again. Thank you very much.

    Wonderful

Amid the Ryokan in Kinugawa Onsen that seem to be declining, your continued efforts are truly wonderful. We were completely satisfied with everything. My 90-year-old mother was also delighted with the in-room bath.

Just as described in the Review

I’d been wanting to stay here because of its great reputation. The bath and the meals were very satisfying, and the front desk responded quickly. Since we chose a Japanese-style Room, it felt a bit dated. Next time, I’ll choose a Room with beds.

    A Moment of Bliss

I visited with my husband for a belated wedding anniversary. The welcome at the entrance by so many staff members was amazing—I was truly surprised. The grand lobby was wonderful, filled with the sound of a pipe organ and an indescribable atmosphere, and the classical furnishings were beautiful as well. We stayed in Building No. 8 in a Japanese-style room with beds. It was incredibly spacious, with a stunning view and the soothing sound of the river flowing below. There was also a TV in the bedroom. The vanity area was large, and even the private bath had Onsen water—pure luxury. The rooftop garden bath was beyond amazing, and all of the other baths were excellent too. Watching trains go by while soaking, seeing birds of prey spread their wings across the sky, and taking in the mountain range—it all felt mystical. I wanted to stay forever... Dinner was served in a semi-private room (almost completely private—and very spacious), and it was an outstanding kaiseki meal with incredible attention to detail worthy of a traditional restaurant. At the end, we even received an anniversary gift from the proprietress—it meant so much to us, and we are truly grateful. Breakfast was also delicious—especially the dashimaki tamago; I became a big fan. Each dish was beautifully crafted and tasted wonderful as well. We will definitely return—this became a truly special memory for us. Thank you very much. P.S. 1: The Asaya manju were unbelievably delicious—I made Reservations for four boxes, and everyone loved them. P.S. 2: The lounge was also fantastic—stylish interior design with wonderful craftsmanship; the sweets were delicious, and they even prepared matcha for us. The manju served with it were Asaya manju as well—an Accommodation that showed heartfelt care in every detail. I would like to order Asaya manju again.

    It was an unforgettable trip.

I stayed at Asaya Hotel on a mother–daughter trip with my mother in her 70s. In short, we had a dreamlike, wonderfully comfortable time. ■Facility The signature atrium design and crystal elevator were so stunning I could have watched them forever. From the moment you step inside, you feel transported into an extraordinary world. ■Room Because we prioritized dining and Onsen, we chose the most affordable Plan: a twin Room in Shuhokan. It does have a business-hotel vibe, but honestly… there were so many services we wanted to enjoy—baths, massages, meals, and more—that the Room was basically just for sleeping. We were happy to choose the best-value Plan. ■Dining The famously lavish buffet exceeded our expectations at both dinner and breakfast. Every dish was high quality, and we also enjoyed unique options like hot pot and live-kitchen pasta. And the watermelon and melon were delicious… My elderly mother enjoyed her meals as well. At dinner time, seating for guests with small children was gently zoned apart from other areas, which felt very considerate. Even as two adults traveling together, we could relax comfortably. ■Onsen We tried all three large public baths, but the top-floor open-air bath was especially wonderful. The boat-shaped open-air bath—made using a boat once used for Kinugawa river rafting—was highly entertaining and felt like something truly “only at Asaya.” We were also surprised to find premium amenities: hair dryers from ReFa and Dyson, plus shower heads like Mirable and ReFa! ■Other services Unusually for this kind of Hotel, massages were reasonably priced, so I booked without hesitation. 5,000 yen for 40 minutes was very affordable—and it felt amazing. It’s wonderful that everything can be done within the Accommodation for a treat-yourself trip. ■Request This may be an odd request (sorry!), but I’d love to see “Asaya original goods” at the souvenir shop beyond edible items… Since this is such a well-known Accommodation, staying at Asaya itself becomes a lasting memory—and I wished there were keepsakes like handkerchiefs, keychains, bookmarks or stickers that I could take home^^ ■Finally At checkout I accidentally put on someone else’s shoes; one of your male staff members ran to swap them out for me right away. I’m truly grateful—thank you so much! Sorry for the trouble!

    A bit disappointing.

The food was nicely seasoned. What was disappointing was the limited selection of welcome drinks and the lack of a coin laundry.

It wasn’t as good as I expected.

Although the property has been renovated and is generally clean, I still felt the age of the Facility. The buffet venue was very small, and once we entered it was extremely crowded, making it impossible to pick up food smoothly—it was awful. The live kitchen was especially bad; it took about 10 minutes just to get spaghetti. With only 90 minutes, having to wait 10 minutes just to get what you want leaves you with no time. The food itself was good, but overall it was more disappointing than anything else.

    Highly satisfied

I made a Reservation because the Reviews were great, and I’d been looking forward to it ever since. Not only was the staff’s service excellent, but the Room was clean. The facilities were as well. What I was most excited about was the food—the buffet! I’ve traveled a lot and tried many buffets, but this one had a wide variety of dishes and everything was delicious. There were so many things I wanted to eat, but I couldn’t finish them all. If I have the chance, I’d definitely like to stay again.

    It was very good.

The staff were very helpful from the time of the Reservation. The shower and hair dryer in the bath were high quality, and the entire Hotel was well cleaned, making our stay very comfortable. The meals were, of course, delicious.

    We had a wonderful stay.

It was a luxurious Ryokan, and the staff were very attentive. The meals were buffet-style, with a wide variety of high-quality dishes—everything we tried was excellent. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

It was amazing!!!!! ← Number of stars

Just as the reviews said, all the staff were smiling and very kind, and we had a truly comfortable stay. If I had to mention anything that stood out, it was that I didn’t realize at first that the tissues at the sink also serve as hand towels (soft paper towels?), so I was confused because there didn’t seem to be any towels. Also, when we were first shown to our Room, we were told, “There is no escalator, so please use the elevator.” Since there had been guidance about an escalator at check-in, we thought that was strange and searched with three people—and there actually was an escalator! One thing I would have liked to know before staying is that there is no cleansing oil in the Room—it was available at the washing area in the large public bath (the guest room does have toner and serum). The girls’ get-together Plan included a colorful yukata and a hot stone spa session, and both were fantastic! After hearing about it, my daughter wants to go too, so I’d love to visit again in a different season. We were completely satisfied with everything—the meals, the large public bath, and the Room (including the floor cushions and futon). (I didn’t notice at first that you can adjust pillow height… once I lowered it midway through my stay it became much more comfortable.) It had been a while since I stayed at a large-scale Ryokan, but it was extremely comfortable. Thank you very much!

    すた丼!

    It was an amazing experience.

[Private Dining] Enjoy seasonal kaiseki cuisine — I stayed in the Yusaka Corner (Non-Smoking), Annex No. 8 with a bed. The private dining room was spacious, and the food was exceptionally delicious. After dinner, we went to the teahouse (izakaya) Kinu no Kura and enjoyed some drinks. They have a wide selection of sake and shochu brands, including rare options. Perhaps because many guests choose the buffet, everyone seemed full, so this place was almost empty. This time it cost just under JPY 50,000 per person, and I felt it offered excellent value for money with a very high level of satisfaction. One downside: the changing area at the open-air bath on the 13th floor had an odor like a gym locker room, which was disappointing. Still, overall it was a great experience, and I’d like to stay again next time.

    A bit disappointing.

There was long hair on the floor in the toilet and washroom, which made the place feel unclean. I stayed in Building No. 8; although I could use the lounge, once again I ended up only having drinks. Both dinner and breakfast were worse than before in quality and taste, and the crab was far too salty to eat. Even though this Accommodation costs more than nearby hotels, it used to feel worth it—but this time I felt a lower-priced Hotel very close by that I have stayed at before offered higher satisfaction. Considering the price, Room, service, and meals overall, a popular nearby Hotel where I stayed recently was much better. I was finally able to make a Reservation for Building No. 8 with an open-air bath and went looking forward to it, but I was very disappointed.

This was a Hotel I had always wanted to stay at. It was my first time staying here and I was excited; the food was delicious, and the service was attentive and wonderful! The woman who assisted us at dinner kindly explained each dish while guiding us to our table. I will definitely stay here again!

    It exceeded my expectations!

I stayed here with my elderly father. This is a very historic Accommodation, but the building is very clean and well maintained. Despite the rain, many guests were staying. Check-in was crowded, but on the registration form you can choose whether or not to have a staff member escort you. This time we chose not to, but my father wanted to go to our Room while receiving explanations and seemed disappointed, so I regret that choice a little. Dinner is buffet-style, and you can choose between 17:30 and 19:15. We chose the later time, but there were plenty of seats and we didn’t have to wait long. The food offered a mix of Japanese and Western dishes with many options, and the dishes made with Tochigi specialties were delicious. The large indoor public bath was also clean and very spacious. The open-air bath on the rooftop is available until midnight. It seems you can’t use the open-air bath early in the morning, so it would be nice if that were possible.

    The Room in Building...

The Room in Building No. 8 is spacious with plenty of amenities, and access to the lounge makes it very satisfying—this is why we keep coming back. Since it was Mother’s Day, I was able to relax and was very pleased. My family loves working up a sweat with Onsen table tennis and then unwinding in the large public bath and sauna. In the women’s bath, a group of three adults and four children started shouting and splashing around with their long hair left loose in the bath area, so I left. I really wish everyone would follow proper Onsen etiquette. Once again, we enjoyed the buffet made with wonderful ingredients until we were completely full. This time there wasn’t any salmon roe at breakfast—maybe because we went late? That was disappointing, but I still had fun customizing my favorite Asaya curry by using omelet sauce. From check-in to check-out, all the staff—including the cleaning team—greeted us pleasantly, and we headed home in a great mood. We will definitely stay again.

    The bath was exceptional!

As this is a large tourist Hotel, it was crowded, but the baths were outstanding. What was disappointing was the dinner buffet. There was a wide selection, but the quality fell short. This is purely my personal impression, but if I have the chance to stay again, I would choose a Plan other than the buffet. I felt that buffets are better suited for families with growing children and for younger guests. I had high expectations given Asaya’s reputation, but considering the price and food waste, I can understand why it ends up that way. The systems and staff seemed very well trained. That said, it sometimes felt a bit mechanical—but with so many guests to accommodate, I think it’s necessary. The fresh greenery was beautiful during our stay, so next time I’d like to visit during the autumn foliage season.

    Blissful Moments

Since I was traveling with my elderly parents, I requested a nearby parking space in advance, and I truly appreciated being guided to the spot closest to the entrance. The staff were also very courteous and attentive. For dinner, we enjoyed a kaiseki meal in a private room. The spiny lobster sashimi in particular was outstanding. The hot stone spa was also great. This is an Accommodation where I would definitely like to stay again.

    Casual Onsen Facility

It was my first visit in over 10 years. The place was very lively and busy with many guests. Most of the guests were couples and young married couples, so it was a bit hard for us, as a couple over 60, to relax, which was disappointing. I also felt the buffet wasn’t as impressive as I remembered. Another thing that stood out was the staff. It’s fine that they are mostly young, but their service felt unfriendly and mechanical. Perhaps it can’t be helped due to staff shortages. Since it had been so long and my expectations were high, it was disappointing.

Regarding your stay on April 10.

I was very satisfied again this time. However, there is one area I would like to see improved: there is no place in the Room to dry bath towels. This time as well, I used hangers to dry them. Regarding the Lounge at Building No. 8: it would be even better if iced coffee were available in the morning. Thank you for your consideration.

    It was a pleasant stay.

I stayed here once about five years ago and remembered how delicious the buffet was, so I came back. The young female staff guided us efficiently, the Room was spacious, and the souvenir shop and game arcade were well stocked—so even just staying inside the Hotel is fun and never boring. The baths are a bit far apart, with the large public bath on the 1st floor and the open-air bath on the 13th, but each has its own appeal: the large public bath offers a shampoo bar, sauna, cold bath, and more—set up to fully enjoy the Onsen—while the open-air bath has fewer washing stations but a wide garden area with dreamy lighting that creates a relaxing, out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere. Especially at the open-air bath, I must have had perfect timing because it was completely private with no one else there—it was wonderful! Just as I remembered, the buffet was delicious! It’s a shame I’m at an age where I can’t eat as much anymore (lol). The sushi was slightly firm, but everything else was seasoned so well it hardly felt like typical buffet food—I really enjoyed it. Overall, while it’s not exactly “good old days,” it has everything you’d hope for in an “Onsen trip,” without anything lacking or excessive. The price is reasonable too, and it’s an Accommodation I’d definitely like to visit again.

    Very satisfied.

The bath and the Room were very clean, and at night we could see a beautiful starry sky from the rooftop. Dinner was an excellent kaiseki meal that felt like spring, and breakfast was a buffet with a fresh-made feel—everything was delicious. We packed our souvenirs in a box and mailed them home, and the staff carefully wrapped each item as cushioning, even the potato chips. Thank you for your thoughtful care.

    It became a wonderful memory.

After choosing Kinugawa Onsen as our travel destination and doing some research, we became very interested in Asaya Hotel and really wanted to stay there. By the time we tried to make a Reservation it was already fully booked, and we were close to giving up. However, we checked for availability every day just in case, and when a room happened to open up, we made the Reservation immediately. We were very much looking forward to our stay, and once we arrived, both the Facility and the buffet were excellent—overall, it was a very satisfying visit. There is just one point I would like to mention. When using the buffet, it was our mistake that we did not bring our ticket to the reception desk, and we regret that. However, I was slightly concerned about the service from an older male staff member who assisted us at that time. We received no guidance until we spoke up ourselves, and it felt as though he would not respond unless we presented the ticket first. I understand that verification is necessary as a rule; however, given the situation it should have been clear that we were there for dining service. A slightly warmer approach would have made the experience more comfortable. The Facility and meals were truly wonderful—and because our stay exceeded even what we had hoped for—this one point felt a little disappointing. I hope this Hotel continues to become even better in the future.

Kinugawa Onsen After a Long Time

After seeing a post on social media about Asaya’s buffet, I made a Reservation right away. I don’t usually eat much, so I rarely choose buffet dining, but this buffet was excellent. During the Strawberry Fair, we could enjoy all-you-can-eat delicious Tochigi strawberries, and the other fruits were also very tasty. There was a wide variety of dishes such as piping-hot pizza and pasta, and everything was well seasoned. The desserts were plentiful and delicious as well. We could order alcohol by the bottle, which felt like great value. The staff were attentive too, checking that ice and water didn’t run out, so we had a wonderful time. I was able to try all three baths and relax at my own pace. The panoramic open-air bath had a beautiful mountain view. It was a fun trip for the four of us—my friends (a couple) and me—and everyone was very satisfied. This is an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

For my first stay, I chose the Shuhokan VIP Suite (Japanese-Western style room).

This was our first time staying at Kinugawa Onsen Asaya, and since we visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine every year, we have previously stayed at places such as Fufu Nikko and Kinugawa Park Hotel. All of them were wonderful, and this time the Shuhokan VIP Room at Asaya was also absolutely outstanding. Not only the Room, but also the food, the Onsen, and the hospitality were excellent. One area that could be improved for families with children is the equipment throughout the game arcade. It was the only place that didn’t feel exciting, with games and prizes that seemed decades old. Since people tend to spend more freely while traveling, both children and adults actually spend quite a bit at arcades, so it could be a win-win. Also, the towels laid out inside the sauna stayed wet all the time. Even when staff came to check on the Onsen area and entered the sauna, they did not tidy up things like disheveled towels. Improving this would make it even better.

    Stay for an anniversary trip

Dinner was as highly rated—very delicious! Since it was only 90 minutes, it felt a bit rushed. I would be happy if it were at least 120 minutes. Sorry to say, breakfast was a little disappointing. It was held in a different venue from the dinner venue. Items like the sausages were cold... There wasn’t much I found tasty, and I really felt the gap compared with dinner. I noticed some guests had breakfast in the same venue as dinner—how is that decided? Does the menu differ depending on the venue? If so, it felt unfair because there was no option to choose at Reservation or check-in... There are several Onsen baths, so it didn’t feel too crowded and I could relax. Other than breakfast, I was very satisfied!
