Just one disappointment
This was my first time staying, and I was very satisfied with the buffet selection. However, one disappointing issue was that the bathroom drain seemed clogged, causing water to flood around my feet. If not for that, it would have been a perfect stay. I look forward to visiting again.

The sea was rough.
Stayed on July 13, 2025. The accommodation is an old hotel and not very well-maintained. A negative point was that the sea was rough, and all outdoor activities were canceled because of it. It seems Akaho is best enjoyed after carefully checking the weather in advance. We had a buffet for dinner. There is one dining venue for every two hotel buildings, so meals are served in two shifts. However, when we arrived 10 minutes before our designated time, more than 100 people were already lined up even though it was a weekday—definitely a first-come-first-served type of hotel. My wife said it was okay, but I found the batter on fried and stir-fried dishes too thick and felt slightly queasy afterward. I couldn't give high marks for the taste; perhaps I should have chosen a Japanese course meal instead. Judging by the restaurant's capacity, there seemed to be about 300-400 guests staying at the accommodation; however, surprisingly, the baths weren't crowded at all—maybe because they are slightly hot and people don't stay long in them? Next time I'd like to visit on a sunny day just to enjoy outdoor activities!

We enjoyed the nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere.
This Hotel could only have been built during the period of rapid economic growth. I thoroughly enjoyed the Showa retro vibe! It was fun wandering around this maze-like (?) Hotel. Although I arrived early, the reception staff provided excellent service and even lent me a towel set, so I could enjoy the Onsen right away. Spalium Nishiki was fantastic (since it alternates access, I recommend using it twice—morning and evening). However, for a Hotel of this size, I felt that some of the other baths were slightly small overall. I had meals at the buffet. The location met my expectations, but it would have been nice to see more local ingredients featured in the dishes. I stayed in a twin Room; however, it seemed like two beds were squeezed into a tight space (?), making it difficult to open closet or refrigerator doors—this was disappointing. Next time I'd like to try staying in Horizon Rooms; however, I feel this Hotel may not be suitable for visiting with parents.

Completely satisfied with everything.
The view from the room was beautiful and very satisfying. The Onsen was not crowded, allowing for a relaxing experience. The meals were busy but delicious and very satisfying. If I had to mention one issue, it would be that many staff members were foreigners with limited understanding of Japanese, which caused some inconvenience. I will use this place again next time!

Perfect for experiencing the charm of the Showa era!
The view from the building, supported by piles and extending over the sea, was spectacular—something unlikely to be approved for construction today. The unique scenery of having the sea on both sides of the building felt unparalleled. Staying in an oceanfront room allowed us to enjoy a stunning sunrise over the horizon, which was a highlight. The retro-style grand dining hall, which could almost be mistaken for a casino at first glance, offered a buffet with average dishes; however, both the kitchen and service staff were exceptionally kind and hospitable. The room had minimal renovations but served its purpose as we were traveling with friends and prioritized practicality over luxury. In terms of value for money, it was reasonable since our plan included one night's stay with two meals and an all-you-can-drink option at dinner. However, the public bath was quite small relative to the number of guests, making it difficult to relax fully. It would be great if they could either add rooms with private open-air baths to reduce public bath usage or renovate with larger bathtubs for better accommodation capacity.

First time!
Stayed here for the first time! I stayed in the Ocean building! There were two baths, but they seemed small considering the capacity of the Hotel. Also, it was disappointing that there was no cold bath despite having a sauna. The young staff at the front desk were bright and cheerful, which was great! I wish I could borrow some of their youthful energy! (LOL)

I really enjoyed it. I will use it again.

Nostalgic Memories
I decided to stay here as I had heard good things from a friend who often visited with their family during childhood. The meals and the bath were excellent. Although the elevator was always full and difficult to use, and the washroom was a bit small, I would still like to visit again.

A bit disappointing
Known as a famous and old Hotel. The rooms feel small and not very clean, perhaps due to the age of the building. Futons instead of beds, and you have to lay them out yourself. We were looking forward to an extraordinary experience with full service but felt a bit disappointed. The bathroom in the room is too small. The sink is in the same space, but it's cramped, making it hard to use without bumping into the doorknob. The buffet meals were satisfying enough.

THE Showa
A wonderful accommodation with breathtaking views from everywhere. Photos of the construction process by New Akao are displayed, making you realize how challenging it must have been to build a hotel in this location. With a game corner, pool, and shooting gallery, it was an enjoyable hotel for both adults and children. The meals were also delicious.

May not be suitable for elderly guests.
We stayed one night at Horizon Wing with my mother in her 80s. She loves Onsen and had previously mentioned wanting to enjoy an Onsen with an ocean view, so we decided to visit Akaho's Onsen after seeing it advertised. The ocean view from the room was absolutely stunning, and the room itself had been renovated beautifully—it was very clean and comfortable! However, while it may not be an issue for younger guests, the Facility can be challenging for elderly visitors. To get from the front desk to our room required multiple elevator rides. Reaching the buffet venue involved taking four different elevators and walking through long hallways. Although there were three types of baths available, the one with an ocean view that we wanted to visit most was quite far away and difficult to locate. This oversight on our part could have been avoided with better research beforehand, but I do think it's a bit tough for elderly guests. That said, when my mother fell in the bath area and injured herself, staff kindly provided a wheelchair and introduced us to an excellent hospital—we are truly grateful for their assistance. The staff members were incredibly kind throughout our stay. For children, there seems to be a treasure hunt-like activity utilizing the spacious Facility that they would surely enjoy. The Facility is impressively large yet retains a retro charm while being nicely renovated—this aspect is truly wonderful. I would love to return again when not traveling with elderly family members!

It exceeded expectations.
I initially thought it was a casual Hotel, but the attentive service and delicious meals made it enjoyable for the whole family. While there were some inconveniences like waiting for elevators and long lines at the buffet, I believe these can be part of the experience if you embrace them. It's best to relax and enjoy your time away from daily life without getting frustrated. However, one issue stood out: a few female staff members at the buffet displayed poor customer service. Do they understand hospitality? Especially around the coffee machine area, their behavior was unacceptable. They worked visibly irritated, and while I was pouring coffee, one staff member added milk to the machine next to me, causing milk to splash onto my clothes without even noticing. They seemed constantly rushed and annoyed. The following morning, whether it was the same staff or not, there was still visible irritation near the coffee area—something unpleasant to witness first thing in the morning. Guests travel from afar with transportation costs and pay for Hotel stays seeking relaxation through good service. For paid employees to exhibit such attitudes is unacceptable; it reflects poorly on professionalism. Additionally, when my child asked about an item at the buffet, we received an awkward response: "We do not have that available." It felt odd coming from a Japanese staff member—was everything alright? Even part-time workers in Tokyo seem better trained than this. That said, despite these issues with service quality in certain areas, I think this Hotel offers great value with its stunning views and unique retro atmosphere that can't be experienced elsewhere.

Birthday
I celebrated my 40th birthday here. At Sparium Nishiki, I accidentally overheated and felt a bit unwell, but the staff quickly noticed and provided ice water and towels. Thanks to their prompt care, I recovered quickly and had a very pleasant experience. The buffet restaurant was also luxurious and excellent—I would love to visit again!

A Long-Awaited Family Trip
It was a family trip with our 1-year-and-4-month-old grandchild. Since it was a baby-friendly Hotel and we had made prior requests, the room was prepared with a bottle sterilization set, picture books, blankets, and two beds already joined together. Baby food was also provided, allowing both adults and children to fully enjoy the stay.

Three-Generation Travel
Stayed with my 90-year-old mother, sister, and pregnant daughter. The room was clean with a stunning view, the large public bath was spacious and relaxing, and the buffet venue was simply spectacular! The staff were kind to my elderly mother, making it a memorable and enjoyable trip. Thank you very much!

Slightly lacking.
The facility has been renovated and is well-equipped, which was great. However, the dinner felt underwhelming for the price range. Additionally, while expansion is ongoing, the elevator congestion was severe enough to significantly impact the experience. Measures to stagger check-out times may be essential.

Even a large group of 4 adults, 2 infants, and 1 child can stay in one spacious Room.
I visited again this year during Golden Week, just like last year. This is a hotel where families with children can stay without any worries. The room was spacious, and the buffet meals were excellent. There were so many options that I couldn't try everything, which left me wanting more. The Onsen facilities were great, with three different locations to choose from, all of which were very clean. One downside was that I wanted to drink alcohol late at night but found no vending machines or alcohol in the refrigerator; I wish I had bought some in advance to bring to the room. The shuttle service from Atami Station had several buses available and was very convenient. This is a hotel I'd love to visit again!

A classic and traditional Hotel
A classic Hotel that truly represents Atami. We stayed in the ocean-view wing. - Highlights The breathtaking ocean view and horizon! Delicious meals, all thoughtfully prepared! Great bath facilities—spacious, with a refined design that's not overly flashy. Walking distance to Kengo Kuma's café. - Downsides The carpet in the guest room was extremely dirty, with stains and cigarette marks? Being a large Hotel, moving around can be tiring; elevators take time to arrive! The shop is underwhelming—fine for beer and snacks but no room service available, so more options would be appreciated. Overall, it's a good Hotel. Definitely one to consider when visiting Atami. While the Facility has a strong retro Showa-era vibe and feels old in some areas, it does appear well-maintained.

Both the facility and service were disappointing.
The Hotel seems to rely on service to compensate for the outdated Facility, but in reality, it felt like a cost-cutting and compartmentalized operation resulted in inflexible and low-level service. 【Positive Points】 - Amenities and events for children - Meals (quality varied greatly, but the delicious ones were truly enjoyable) 【Negative Points】 - Trouble with the mobile check-in machine (had to line up twice at the long check-in counter) - Room cleanliness (difficult for those with dust allergies) - Public bath (strong chlorine smell during certain times) - Operations (seemed compartmentalized; often couldn't get help outside of specific responsibilities)

Breakfast is excellent! However, the restaurant service was disappointing.
It was my first time staying, and I really appreciated the early check-in accommodation, which was very helpful as I was traveling with children. The front desk staff were friendly, and the Room was bright, clean, and had an amazing view. The events for children, table tennis, and pool made for wonderful memories during our stay. The dinner buffet sushi wasn’t very impressive and didn’t feel like a unique Atami dining experience. However, the morning fried horse mackerel sandwich and matcha French toast were absolutely delicious! Breakfast was excellent! That said, one male staff member at the breakfast buffet left a bad impression. It’s unclear whether he noticed or ignored finished plates on our table because they weren’t cleared at all. When I finally asked him to clear them myself, his response of "Please wait a moment" came across unwillingly in both tone and expression—it felt unpleasant. While it might have been due to being busy or overwhelmed with work, such an attitude is not ideal to encounter in the morning. Overall though, the Hotel itself was great; it’s just unfortunate that one staff member's behavior stood out negatively.

Reasons to Visit an Onsen
The Onsen was not relaxing at all. The path from the room to the bathhouse and dining area felt like a maze, and it was impossible to return to the room without asking staff for directions. The room had several low steps, causing me to stub my toes multiple times. Additionally, there were only towels for use in the bathhouse, leaving nothing available for drying hands after washing. Moving between Ocean and Horizon areas was challenging as they are on different floors, making it difficult to navigate without constantly referring to the map in the brochure. I wanted a peaceful time at the Onsen but ended up feeling more exhausted instead.

Old and unclean rooms
I booked this Hotel for a business guest, but upon entering the Room, the first thing that stood out was a dirty refrigerator. The Facility overall was outdated and cracked. At around 10 PM, when trying to sleep, I found footprints on the sheets after pulling out the futon. Since my guest was a foreigner who couldn't speak Japanese, they contacted me directly. However, as the Hotel's external line service ends at 8 PM, I had no choice but to visit the Hotel around 10:30 PM. When I explained the situation to them, their response felt dismissive with no sense of apology—just saying they would replace it if needed! Choosing this Hotel turned out to be a huge mistake.

Early Check-in
We checked in early and enjoyed a bath while waiting for the Room. Towels were provided, and all the staff were kind, making it very relaxing. This time I went with friends, but next time I want my family to enjoy the evening buffet.

The best stay!
We visit once a year. We absolutely love everything about Akaho, including its location, all ocean-view rooms, retro Showa-era interior, open-air Onsen baths, delicious buffet meals made with plenty of seasonal local ingredients, and the warm hospitality of the staff! After enjoying the food and Onsen, relaxing in the room while listening to nothing but the sound of waves is truly special. We look forward to visiting again next year!

Is it Showa retro...?
The room remodeling was incomplete, with an awkward step right at the entrance that could cause older guests to trip, making it very dangerous every time entering the room. For meals (buffet), it was necessary to arrive early and line up, and even after securing a table, there were long lines as many people crowded around to get food. I felt more thought should be given to the system and flow. It was not relaxing at all. Despite being an uneven outdoor parking lot, parking fees were charged even for accommodation guests. The size and space of the restaurant hosting the buffet were excellent. I expected only a retro atmosphere, but everything still felt like it was from the Showa era.

1 night, 2 days starting from March 16.
I stayed at New Akao, a place I had always wanted to visit, in an Ocean Japanese-Western style room. The reviews were quite polarized, so it felt like a gamble, but my conclusion after staying there is that it was absolutely the right choice! The unobstructed ocean view was dynamic and the most stunning I have ever seen, both domestically and internationally. The building has a retro yet gorgeous charm and is beautiful enough to host weddings. The meals were excellent; the fried horse mackerel was especially outstanding with its adorable pink pickled vegetable tartar sauce. The staff members, including those from overseas, were polite and quick to answer questions accurately. My room on the 12th floor had been beautifully renovated with clean toilets and washrooms that lit up automatically at night—a very convenient feature. Although the bath area is relatively small for its scale, it was very quiet when I visited around 7:30 PM. As mentioned in other reviews, there were long lines at the buffet which made getting food time-consuming. Since it's limited to 90 minutes per session, it didn’t feel like you could enjoy drinks leisurely. While staff encouraged guests to take items without waiting in line if possible, many people hesitated due to cultural norms about cutting in line. Right outside the restaurant are caves and waves crashing dynamically against rocks—an impressive sight—and its interior design evokes an old French atmosphere that’s truly charming. I also enjoyed karaoke and table tennis during my stay. Salon de Nishiki on the 15th floor is breathtakingly beautiful despite being unused—it feels like a scene from "Beauty and the Beast" where you can imagine a dance taking place. What impressed me most was the rooftop garden. Some cherry blossoms were still blooming when I visited; climbing up revealed an incredible panoramic ocean view that I highly recommend experiencing yourself. Though not well-maintained or promoted by this hotel as much as it deserves attention-wise—I hope more guests get introduced here because of how spectacularly scenic everything looks! Atami itself offers convenience being close-by alongside vibrant station surroundings making returning back-to-New Akao inevitable someday soon again!! Keep striving forward always!!

There was an issue with the room key not working. I wish this could have been checked before check-in. During recovery, I also expected quicker preparation and response. Although it was a weekday stay, the breakfast buffet in the morning was crowded. Even to take one item, we had to line up, so I would appreciate improvements in the system or announcements for queue management. The building is old but well-maintained, and I am satisfied with the room and bathroom facilities.

The open-air bath offers a stunning view, which I absolutely love. I revisited after several years and enjoyed the French course dinner, which was delicious. The spacious environment, tasty meals, and breathtaking views from the open-air bath provided a refreshing experience. Thank you very much. (Although the service at the lobby was slightly disappointing.) I would like to stay here again occasionally.

Second Three-Generation Trip
A three-generation trip for 11 people in 3 Rooms, just like last year. This time, everyone was familiar with the place and enjoyed it even more than before. The buffet dishes seemed even tastier than last year, leaving us very satisfied. The only downside is the limited number of elevators. Since the front desk is on the 17th floor at the top, during checkout it’s difficult to rely on stairs as they involve going up—making it impossible for elderly guests or those with small children. While the age of the Room didn’t bother us much as it was clean, we strongly hope for an improvement in elevator availability soon. The gift shop offers a wide variety of souvenirs and provides discounts if you become a LINE friend—highly recommended!
