I want to come back again!

We stayed at Horizon and used the indoor pool and buffet, and everything was excellent. The view from our Room was beautiful, and we were truly moved by the sunrise over the ocean. The location is great, so the views from outside the Room were also stunning, and the interior design of the building was lovely—it was fun taking photos throughout. The Accommodation is spacious, so getting around took a bit of effort, but there were welcome drinks and other events along the way, which made moving around enjoyable. The food was delicious, with a great selection of kids’ options as well, so our whole family had a wonderful time.

    Family Trip

We stayed at the Horizon Accommodation on August 12 and 13 during the Obon holiday. The Room was clean. After watching various Akao YouTube videos, we saw that sushi was available at dinner, so it was disappointing that there was no sushi this time. It was also disappointing that the sashimi selection was limited to tuna chunks and salmon. Other than that, everything was very good.

    We had a great time.

I visited with my three children (a 9th-grade daughter, a 5th-grade son, and a 3rd-grade son) and myself—four of us in total. The exterior looks old, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the inside was very clean. The slightly retro atmosphere felt refreshing to the kids. Since it was during Obon, there were many families, but it wasn’t stressful. We enjoyed the indoor pool, though it’s a bit small. Still, it was great for families with children! The meals were also excellent. Because it was crowded, it was a little hard for me to figure out where everything was, but we had fun and ate plenty. Overall, I’m very satisfied and would like to visit again. Atami Castle nearby is also fantastic!

An Accommodation with charming views, but small frustrations that add up

While there were some positives, overall the stay left me with many concerns about operations, service, and systems, and I don’t think I would return. For the dinner buffet, we were asked to register a preferred time in advance, but even after arriving at the designated time we were kept waiting for nearly 30 minutes. Even during peak periods, if you require time slots, I’d like to see the capacity settings and entry management reviewed. The next morning, based on the previous night’s experience, I went to the venue about 10 minutes early by myself so my wife and our 2-year-old wouldn’t have to wait. I explained that I wanted to check in once my family arrived together, but without confirming my intent I was told “It’ll get crowded—please go in,” and was pushed to enter. It was unpleasant. There was also a long line at the buffet stations; it took about 20 minutes just to pick up food once. Since we couldn’t leave our 2-year-old alone and had to take turns as a couple, more than 30 minutes passed after entering before our whole family could start eating. The food was average overall, and for a large Hotel it didn’t feel particularly extensive in variety. The app and website usability were also poor. After checking the pre-payment amount once, we could no longer pay online again and ultimately had to handle it at the front desk. It made me wonder what purpose the online process serves. Some staff members were polite, but we also frequently encountered staff whose responses did not feel pleasant. Even on the Shuttle Service bus we were only asked “Where to?”—as first-time guests we couldn’t tell they meant which building. In the guest room, dust had accumulated around the toilet paper holder area, and it also bothered us that the duvet cover quickly separated from the duvet. On the other hand, Spa Reium Nishiki was excellent—the view and sense of openness during a morning bath were unique to this Hotel. The scenery and Onsen facilities are appealing from a hardware standpoint, but small stresses piled up throughout various moments of our stay. If they review the entire Accommodation experience from a guest perspective end-to-end, I think impressions could improve significantly.

    Family Trip

We stayed one night during the Obon holidays for a family trip. The Hotel is huge, so it was a bit confusing at first to get the overall layout. Once we got used to it, it was comfortable as long as we planned ahead—such as visiting Facilities that are farther apart in one go. The indoor pool was just right for small children—not too big—and they really enjoyed it. There are three baths, so we could enjoy a different one each time: after the pool, after dinner, and in the morning, which was great. It was disappointing that the ocean pool was closed due to the weather. We’d like to come back and try again. The kids’ play area also made our children very happy. We would appreciate it if it stayed open a little later at night so we could use it after dinner as well.

    A Touch of Showa Nostalgia

The moment you step into the Room, it has a nostalgic Showa-era scent! The ocean view is great, and the location is excellent. Amenities are limited, and the bathroom fixtures are also Showa-era sized. The water from the water dispenser is delicious. It’s fun even just to look around this Showa-era Facility. The buffet venue is so huge that by the time you line up at the buffet and get to eat, the food has gone cold.

I feel there is a lack of coordination.

We stayed in the new Kids Twin Room. I had wondered why there were so few photos of the Room, and I was surprised to find that it had a unit bath. If it is meant to be a kids’ room, I thought it would be nice if the sink and toilet were also designed to be easier for children to use. The kids’ park was great—our child enjoyed playing there and really liked it. The reception staff were also very kind. We were also looking forward to the ocean pool, but unfortunately we couldn’t use it due to bad weather. When I called the front desk in the morning to ask whether we could enter, I was told, “The pool staff will decide, so please go and check with them.” I believe there was a sign near the front desk, but they didn’t seem aware of it. Even just moving over required waiting for elevators, and since the front desk didn’t have this information either, it would have been convenient if we could check updates through the in-room TV guide. Also, we were told that luggage left before check-in could be picked up from the same place, but when we went to collect it we were told, “Your Room is ready, so we brought it up.” We appreciated this gesture, but it meant waiting for the elevator again. Since this is a large Hotel it may be unavoidable, but there were many moments where coordination between departments felt lacking.

We enjoyed a three-generation family trip.

At the front desk, I was shocked to be told that there was no Reservation under my name during check-in, without much confirmation. After I showed my reservation details in the IKYU app and waited for a while, I was told, “We found it.” Also, although it was a Japanese cuisine Plan, I was told it was a buffet, and there was no guidance about the lounge. The Room details said the bath and toilet were separate, but in reality it was a unit bath, which was disappointing. The meals were all delicious, with plenty of staff and attentive service throughout. The large public bath was also comfortable. My daughter and her husband also seemed to have a great time at the kids’ area.

    It was a wonderful experience.

I expected a Showa-era retro, Instagrammable Hotel, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the interior surprisingly clean and uncluttered. The Onsen was excellent, and both the dinner and breakfast buffets were outstanding—served in a wonderful venue with a wide variety of options. The ocean view was exceptionally beautiful and truly relaxing.

    It was very good!

Despite being a long-established property, the Room was very clean, the meals were delicious, and the Onsen was great! All of the staff were kind and always greeted us with a smile. We’ll definitely stay here again when we visit Atami!

    The views are spectacular.

I stayed here for the first time with friends for a girls’ trip, and we were very satisfied. The Accommodation is so spacious it’s easy to get lost, and it has a glamorous, retro Showa-era charm with plenty of fun spots—we walked around a lot. The views were great, and the buffet had more than we could possibly finish. Even though there were many guests, the baths weren’t too crowded, so we could relax. All the staff greeted us with smiles, which was wonderful. We’ll be back in September with my family.

I’d been curious about it for a while, so I decided to go.

Built out over the sea, it offered wonderful views. The buffet dishes were all carefully prepared and served. As an Onsen Accommodation, it felt less like a resort, but it was huge and impressive. All of the baths were great. Every staff member was kind and helpful. I wanted to stay in the Horizon Wing because I prefer sleeping in a bed, but it was fully booked; in the end, the Ocean Wing was closer to the sea and had a great view of Atami’s night scenery.

    Delicious dinner.

The dinner buffet is delicious, and the Onsen is also quite good. One downside is that there is no tea service or towels provided at the Onsen.

The futons are thin. The ingredients are not fresh.

A small Japanese-style room with only a thin mattress laid out. I was surprised at how different it felt compared to sleeping in a bed. At the buffet, many items were often out of stock, and much of the sashimi didn’t seem fresh. The slices were thin and small, and they fell apart when picked up.

    We visited Horizon f...

We visited Horizon for a relaxing mother-and-daughter trip. We requested a French course dinner, and it was delicious—made with plenty of local ingredients and beautifully presented, a feast for the eyes as well. For breakfast, we enjoyed rice porridge, and we were happy to have many different side dishes in small portions. The grilled dried horse mackerel was outstanding. It’s such a large Hotel that we almost got lost, but we also enjoyed the many baths. As I’m sensitive to smells, I really appreciated having an air purifier in the Room. I rated the Facility/amenities as 4 because when we went over to the wing area, there was a slight odor—perhaps because it’s an older Hotel. Next time, we plan to stay in the wing with our grandchild, so I hope there will be an air purifier there as well. Thank you for taking care of us.

    Dinner is excellent.

Used for a girls’ trip. Unfortunately, due to the typhoon, we had to head home in tears without staying overnight. The French dinner we had been looking forward to was beautifully presented and delicious—an absolutely blissful time. Even with the eco-friendly approach, we would have appreciated bottled water. Thank you very much.

A wonderful Hotel where you can enjoy an extraordinary escape

My spouse and I stayed in the Horizon Wing, and in the evening we enjoyed a French course dinner. The Horizon Wing is quiet and modern, and we were able to relax peacefully away from the bustle of everyday life. In the evening and again the next morning, we walked to the lively Ocean Wing, toured its gorgeous building and interiors, played retro Showa-era arcade games, and truly refreshed ourselves in an extraordinary setting—it was a wonderful trip. In particular, the Ocean Wing building was luxurious and beautiful, and it really moved me. It felt like a rare experience, as buildings like this probably won’t be built anymore today. At dinner time, we had a happy time with delicious food and warm service. The Japanese set breakfast was also tasty; it was almost too much for me as a woman, but it was healthy so it didn’t feel too heavy. From the Horizon Wing to the Ocean Wing takes about 10 minutes on foot when you include elevators and stairs. Since activities such as the buffet venue, bar, game center, pool, and craft experiences are located in the Ocean Wing, I recommend choosing which wing to stay in based on how you plan to spend your time and how much walking you prefer. If you’re traveling with children, the Ocean Wing may be more fun since it’s close to activities and you can relax without worrying about those around you. There were many families staying in the Ocean Wing. The parking lot is near the Horizon Wing and costs 1,000 yen per night. If you stay in the Ocean Wing, you can use the Hotel minibus Shuttle Service or walk up a hill for about 5 minutes.

    First Stay

This was my first time staying here. Honestly, I was disappointed. The Room was clean despite its age, but the toilet and bath had a sewage-like drain odor. The meals were neither particularly good nor bad. Since we stayed on a weekend, I didn’t feel the price was reasonable. The staff were very courteous.

    A Time-Slip Space

I visited Hotel New Akao for the first time, excited to experience the famous main dining room. The staff who welcomed me were very kind, and check-in was smooth and pleasant. From my ocean-view Japanese-style Room, I had a full view of the sea, and the sound of the waves was incredibly soothing. I was impressed by the gorgeous building and interiors that truly captured a classic Showa-era atmosphere. The main dining room was breathtaking in both size and elegance, and I thoroughly enjoyed plenty of sashimi. The meat dishes were also delicious. Above all, I was deeply moved by the staff’s attentive and courteous service. For breakfast, I enjoyed the French toast and scrambled eggs right to the end. On my way out, traffic made it difficult to merge from the Hotel exit, but a Hotel bus driver kindly signaled for me so I could rejoin the road safely. Thanks to such warm hospitality until the very last moment, it became a truly wonderful trip. This is a Hotel I definitely want to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Luxurious in every way.

The Hotel’s exterior and interiors, including the lounge, were impressive, and we thoroughly enjoyed the three Onsen baths, the seaside promenade for walks, and the bar with a Showa-retro theme. This time we stayed in a dog-friendly Room, and the pet amenities were well stocked. As we were traveling with our dog, we had breakfast and dinner in our Room, but the meals were luxurious and absolutely delicious.

    It was great.

A Hotel with a level of luxury you rarely see these days. It does feel a bit dated, but the design is reminiscent of Japan’s bubble era. The lobby, plaza, and restaurant—jutting out toward the sea—are all glass-walled with high ceilings, and the views were outstanding. The Room had a Japanese-style layout with a unit bath, but there was no separate washbasin area, which made it inconvenient. Only one set each of large and small towels was provided, with no hand towel. Amenities were minimal, and there was hardly any space to place them. There were also few power outlets, so my rating is lower in that respect—though it may be unavoidable given the building. Dinner was a full-course meal and very enjoyable. The staff were polite as well, and overall I think it’s a good Hotel. Thank you for your hospitality.

    Retro and luxurious!

I knew it was an older Hotel, but I wanted to dine at Dining Room Nishiki, so I made a Reservation for the Ocean Wing. (The lower-floor “Ocean” plan offers breakfast and dinner buffets; the upper-floor “Horizon” plan includes a French dinner and a Japanese set breakfast.) Although it’s old, the Room was spacious and comfortable. On the 10th floor, with the windows closed, you could faintly hear the sound of the waves. The toilet and in-room bath have been renovated and were fine, but one area for improvement was noticeable dust. In particular, the toilet door and closet doors have an old-style louver design that easily collects dust, and it really stands out when you’re sitting in the toilet. The large public baths are a bit far away, but there are three of them. Amenities were sufficient and everything felt clean. You need to bring towels from your Room, but at this price I think that’s understandable. Meals were buffet-style as well, and both fish and meat were delicious—I was very satisfied. The mushroom croquettes were subtly great. Service was very polite from the driveway onward. Both Japanese and international staff were pleasant, making my stay very comfortable. If I had one wish: I’d personally love it if the soft drink service (2 pm to 6 pm) were also available in the morning or at night. Overall I had a really fun time. I think summer would be even better with the pool and beach nearby, so I’d like to return. This isn’t about the Hotel itself, but if you buy admission to Atami Castle, all games in Atami Castle’s basement arcade are free to play!! The exhibits are genuinely interesting too—highly recommended since you can easily get your money’s worth.

    The food is delicious!

Thank you very much for your kind support yesterday. My father was happy to be able to stay at Akao, which he had been hoping for. He seems to have fond memories from a previous visit with relatives. We chose the Japanese meal, and every dish was delicious and beautifully prepared. They also accommodated my allergies with great care. All of the staff showed outstanding hospitality, which truly impressed us. One disappointing point was that the main building and the new building were a bit far apart. I understand this is due to the layout, and we did receive Shuttle Service, but it still seemed difficult for elderly guests. Overall, we felt it was excellent value for the price. I would recommend it to friends as well. Thank you for a wonderful day.

    It was spacious.

I stayed here about 20 years ago, and the only thing I remembered was the dining hall. It was truly amazing to find there are three baths. The baths were very clean, and I could enjoy them comfortably. In the dining hall, my mother—now older—was struggling with the stairs, but on the way back on the second day they let her use something like an elevator lift, which made it much easier and she was very happy. I am truly grateful to the staff who helped us—thank you very much. If I can, I would love to visit again. When that time comes, I look forward to staying with you again.

    Excellent New Akao Hotel

This was my second stay at Hotel New Akao, and this time it was a family trip. The hotel is built on the rocks, with a magnificent ocean view. From the room, you can hear the waves crashing against the rocks—I love that feeling. For both dinner and breakfast, we ate in a stylish, spacious restaurant. The selection was diverse—seafood, Japanese dishes, and Western options—and I really enjoyed the food here. The large hot spring bath was my favorite. The outdoor bathing area faces the sea; with the ocean breeze blowing in, it feels truly relaxing. Next time I visit Atami, Hotel New Akao will be my first choice.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We visited as a family after seeing it featured on TV and really wanted to stay. The Room was spacious with a great view, and we even woke up early to watch the sunrise. We enjoyed the Onsen, the wide variety of buffet options in the large dining hall, and the nostalgic game corner throughout our stay. The staff greeted us properly and were very pleasant, and they guided us to our buffet seats efficiently. Thank you for taking care of us. We would love to visit again.
