A comfortable Stays with a little ingenuity

Reviews from others mentioned that check-in took time, the elevator was crowded, and the onsen was crowded, so I checked in early and avoided using the elevator and onsen during peak times, which allowed me to have a mostly comfortable stay. Even so, I had to wait a bit at check-in, and when I went to the onsen around 11 PM, it was still quite crowded. The buffet-style restaurant offered a wide variety of dishes, which I enjoyed both at night and in the morning. I was considering a property in front of Hakodate Station, but I was glad I chose this one because I could enjoy both meals and the onsen at one property, the price was reasonable, and it was a new and clean property.

The open-air bath offers a liberating experience.

The open-air bath was close to the sea with a great view. The Facility was new and comfortable. The location was convenient, just a short walk from the bus stop, though buses were infrequent. Breakfast included various sashimi options, which we enjoyed. The dinner buffet had crab and other dishes but felt slightly lacking.

    Traveling as a Couple

The hotel was beautiful, and both the bath and the view were excellent. There was careful attention to detail, such as providing towels to cover the body in the women's open-air bath so that it couldn't be seen from the hotel in front. If the bath is so wonderful, it might be even better if the showerheads and hairdryers were branded products. Just a personal opinion. Also, although the meals were rated as excellent, there were many groups, and it was quite noisy, so we couldn't enjoy our meals leisurely. There were many menu options, but we weren't very satisfied with ours. I made the reservation thinking we could relax, but it was a bit disappointing. It might be good for tours and such.

The view is nice, and the hotel is clean.

A very clean hotel, with a sense of cleanliness in the bath as well. You can see the fishing fires and Mount Hakodate from the open-air bath, and also watch planes taking off from the nearby Hakodate Airport, which was very relaxing. It's a hotel I would like to stay at again if I have the chance to visit Hakodate.

    It was crowded.

The large public bath was crowded, and it was difficult to secure a locker. Additionally, the breakfast venue had a confusing layout, with people entering from the exit, making it quite chaotic. The room was comfortable, and it was nice to have a view of the sea. Without a shuttle bus service, it was far from any public transportation for us who traveled by train. (The local bus service has limited runs, so it is not very useful.)

    Inconvenient access

The weather was bad this time, so we took a bus from Hakodate Station, but the number of buses is really limited, and the streetcar is also far from the nearest station, which is a drawback. It seems they have discontinued the shuttle bus, and while it might be understandable given the current circumstances, the poor access is a bit of a downside.

    A long-awaited trip to Hakodate

The trip was changed from Oita to Hakodate. I wanted to eat seafood and the meals had a good reputation, so I booked a two-night stay with breakfast and dinner included. However, the dinner on the day of arrival shattered my expectations. I chose Hakodate and Yunokawa Onsen because I wanted to eat delicious seafood. I had stayed at Yunokawa Onsen before and had never been disappointed. However, the seafood here was not fresh at all and not tasty. For some reason, the squid sashimi I was looking forward to was not included in the dinner. Of course, there were many types of seafood. The octopus sashimi seemed like it was pre-made, as if it was just clumped together and placed on a large plate. It was just terrible. From the next meal, it was Japanese-style dishes with kelp and seaweed. What surprised me was that the fruit was frozen, and the only barely fresh one was kiwi, which was served sliced with the skin on. The staff were pleasant and the room was clean, but the meals were disappointing. There were few dishes that seemed carefully prepared. The sashimi was worse than what I eat at home. Other guests were saying the same thing. Was it meant for groups of foreign tourists? It was really disappointing and tough for us to have to stay for two nights.

    Only the meals were disappointing.

The interior of the building was very clean, and the staff at the front desk were kind and accommodating, which was nice. However, the only disappointment was related to the meals. As commonly mentioned in reviews, the main sashimi area is near the entrance, which leads to a long queue, leaving no space for new guests to walk through. I had checked reviews and hotel blogs in advance, so I didn't have high expectations for the meals, but I was still quite disappointed. Many of the dishes other than sashimi were surprisingly unappealing, so everyone focused on the sashimi. There was a chef in the open kitchen, but their attitude was quite unfriendly, even intimidating. An elderly woman asked if crab miso should be added to the miso soup, and after a few seconds of glaring silence, the chef curtly replied, "As you like." Indeed, it was written that you could add it to the miso soup if you preferred, but sometimes people miss that and ask, right? (laughs) My companion and I witnessed this scene and couldn't help but exchange glances. Besides that chef, all the staff were unfriendly that day, without any interaction with the guests. While I would be satisfied if they just prepared and served the food, I think a minimum level of friendliness is necessary in an open kitchen format. It dampened my mood. The taste was average, neither good nor bad, so at least I wanted to enjoy the meal in a pleasant atmosphere. There are many hotels in Hakodate with delicious food. It's understandable since it's an inexpensive hotel, but it's a shame because it's such a nice hotel otherwise. I feel like I won't be returning anytime soon.
