    Dinner

    I was imagining a traditional Ryokan dinner, but it turned out to be a modern Western-style course! Everything was delicious, making it a truly wonderful dinner. I was extremely satisfied. Be sure to book your stay with dinner included!

    An accommodation you will want to visit again.

    This is my second stay this year. My previous visit was in July to escape the summer heat, but I couldn’t forget not only the coolness but also the comfort, so I decided to return. I requested the same Tateshina Club room as last time and looked forward to discovering which literary figure it was associated with—this anticipation is part of the enjoyment. Spending time in a spacious living room while listening to the sound of the river became a blissful experience. The large public bath and private open-air bath were well-maintained and clean, allowing me to relax with peace of mind. Both dinner and breakfast were served in private rooms, featuring healthy dishes made with local ingredients. One reason for my return was that I couldn’t forget the soup curry from my previous visit—I came back just to have it again! Reading while enjoying coffee in the lounge after breakfast is something I can’t experience at home. This time, my goal was simply to relax, and I left feeling completely refreshed. Thank you for providing such blissful moments!

    I stayed in the Room...

    I stayed in the Room of Osamu Dazai, and it was spacious, bright, and very comfortable to spend time in. The atmosphere inside the accommodation and its surroundings was pleasant, and the meals were perfectly seasoned and portioned for us, providing great satisfaction. I would love to visit again if I have the chance.

    A wonderful experience

    As you enter the accommodation, you will be captivated by the charming interior reminiscent of the Taisho era. With numerous books scattered throughout, it feels like being in a library. The hotel lobby offers comfortable sofas where you can spend an entire day immersed in reading, creating a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere. The entire accommodation exudes the essence of Taisho romance, providing a serene retreat. There is also a stone sauna for added satisfaction. Please note that there are no convenience stores nearby. It was my first time visiting Tateshina, but there are various tourist attractions in the area to enjoy. For those tired of crowded places, this is truly a recommended oasis.

    It was the best stay.

    Stayed here during a drive trip to Shinshu. We were warmly welcomed with wonderful smiles from the car drop-off to check-in. The staff's smiles and attentiveness were exceptional, allowing us to enjoy the Onsen in a calm atmosphere and spend peaceful, quiet moments. The meals were delicious with just the right portions. It was a comfortable accommodation where you could take a deep breath and relax. We look forward to visiting again in another season.

    A cherished bookshelf we hope will always be here.

    After a two-year break, I booked Deep Mountain Pavilion again for my stay. Unfortunately, the bathrobes that were previously provided along with in-room wear and pajamas were no longer available. They were very convenient for moving between the separate bathroom and the open-air bath terrace, so this was quite disappointing. Additionally, as I noticed during my previous stays, water (or hot water?) drips from the terrace of the room directly above (5th floor) onto our terrace. This slightly dampens the mood during private bathing time. The planetarium stone sauna I was looking forward to has become very popular compared to when it first opened. The abundance of towels provided is greatly appreciated. The tatami-matted large public bath remains as comfortable as ever. Due to scheduling constraints this year, I stayed for 3 nights and missed out on enjoying lunch exclusive to multiple night stays, which was a bit disappointing. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the [Tateshina Mountain Meal] course featuring local ingredients paired with a sake tasting set of three varieties: Azumino pork rillettes, corn custard soup cake, Shinshu beef steak with chopped wasabi garnish, soup curry from [Mountain Cuisine], all complemented by white and red wines selected by a sommelier from Shinshu wines. On the final day’s [Mountain Meal], First Tray included grilled eel kabayaki-style; sashimi of Shinshu salmon and large char; cold chawanmushi with junsai; squid potato salad; followed by hot pot made with locally sourced beef/pork and rare mushrooms; carp ochazuke rice dish; warabi mochi served alongside carefully cooked sweet bean paste and bavarois dessert—all enjoyed together with Teppan's signature sake "Kamawatari." It was truly delightful. Whether it's Mt. Nyukasa or Mt. Kitayokodake or Yashimagahara Wetlands or Kurumayama in Northern Yatsugatake—each place is always captivating no matter when you visit! Additionally inspired through an illustrator’s art book discovered at Shinyu-san's library led me later attending their solo exhibition held back in Tokyo city—a summer vacation turned into something more meaningful beyond expectations! Looking forward visiting again soon!

    A wide selection of books

    The beautifully arranged bookshelves were captivating. As a book lover, I was deeply impressed by this alone. The service, meals, Onsen, and room were all of a high standard. It was a wonderful 3-day, 2-night stay. There were plenty of towels available. The meals featured local ingredients and were both enjoyable and delicious. Some dishes had unique flavors for a Hotel, but they were well-received by my family. One small inconvenience was that despite the spacious room, tissues were only available in the bathroom—perhaps I missed them elsewhere?

    It was an accommodation where we had a wonderful experience.

    The Onsen bath in the room was refreshing, allowing us to feel the natural breeze of the highlands, and the room itself felt clean. The staff were also kind and attentive. What left the biggest impression was the food. Dining in a private room provided a calm atmosphere, with unique dishes that were all incredibly delicious. I would love to return for another meal. However, there were some disappointing points. Each time we entered the room, there was an unpleasant smell (ammonia? air conditioner odor?), which was uncomfortable. Fortunately, it was cool in the morning, so opening the window for ventilation helped slightly. Additionally, there was a gap under the door of the unit bath where shower water leaked out; this should be addressed for improvement.

    Accommodation that leaves a lasting memory

    I chose this accommodation to enjoy the time spent there with my mother, who is over 90 years old, without focusing on sightseeing. The numerous books displayed throughout the facility made it feel like a library. The Onsen was excellent, the facility was impeccably clean, and the staff provided outstanding service. We stayed in the special room "Yubae no Ma," which left a deep impression on us and received high praise from everyone in our group. For this room at this price, the cost performance is quite reasonable. Choosing this accommodation turned out to be a great success. It was also memorable to see deer gathering by the riverside from the bath. This accommodation will surely remain in our memories for years to come. It was a wonderful trip!

    We are fully satisfied with the hospitality at Tateshina Shinyu Onsen!

    Everything was absolutely satisfying. The renowned library, furnishings, meals, and the staff all contributed to a fulfilling holiday. Although the large public Onsen was temporarily unavailable, each service team leader personally apologized for the inconvenience, and their courteous response left a deep impression on me. Additionally, the foreign female staff member at the front desk saw us off to our car and even greeted us until we drove out of the parking lot—her exceptional hospitality made our time truly enjoyable. Sixty years ago, I spent several summers in Tateshina with my mother and have fond memories of swimming almost daily in Shinyu's Onsen pool. This year, after my mother's passing, I visited to reminisce about those times with her but ended up creating wonderful new memories as well. I would love to visit again someday. Thank you very much!

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    To escape the heat, I visited an accommodation I had always wanted to stay at. From the lobby, you can see shelves filled with numerous books. While enjoying a welcome drink in the lounge, I felt excited thinking about which book to read—philosophy, economics, literature—it was a truly captivating time. Walking down the hallway leading to my room and seeing bookshelves of Iwanami Bunko brought back memories of my student days. The room featured books by literary figures associated with it. The sound of the river flowing outside the window was so soothing that it made me forget about the heat entirely. Dinner included dishes made with fermented ingredients, each one deliciously prepared. The corn soup warmed right in front of me, tender meat, and finishing soup curry were all exquisite! Breakfast was equally delightful with side dishes served on Imari porcelain plates and soy milk hot pot tofu—simply perfect! I hope to enjoy a multiple night stay someday and spend time leisurely reading through all the books in this accommodation's collection. The staff's thoughtful hospitality blended seamlessly into this wonderful place!

    I stayed at Miyamate...

    I stayed at Miyamatei. From the moment I arrived, the staff provided attentive service, and there were options for a welcome drink, which was refreshing on a hot day. However, I felt that the wait time to enter the room was slightly long. The room was old but clean, with an adequate number of towels provided. Due to its structure, the open-air bath and unit bath were located at opposite ends of the room, which made them somewhat inconvenient to use. It would have been nice if there had been a shower near the open-air bath. The ceiling above the open-air bath was made of frosted glass-like material, so at night I felt slightly concerned about visual privacy from what seemed to be balconies of rooms on upper floors. I used one of the private open-air baths during heavy evening rain but didn’t get wet and could enjoy the scenic beauty of the valley—it was a great experience. The dining area is technically private rooms; however, as there are no partitions above certain parts of walls, it lacks soundproofing. Conversations from neighboring tables can be clearly heard—unfortunately for me during dinner this included discussions about illnesses and bodily functions from nearby guests that dampened my meal experience somewhat. Dinner featured creative dishes using local ingredients such as wild boar croquettes—a testament to thoughtful preparation by their chef—and overall it tasted delicious. Breakfast offered many dishes and was also very enjoyable. Most staff members were young women including some international employees; while individual skill levels varied slightly in hospitality service everyone greeted us warmly with smiles leaving positive impressions overall! The collection within library spaces alongside unique displays throughout added charm making this accommodation memorable!

    The lounge has a wonderful atmosphere, allowing you to experience an extraordinary world with antique furnishings and a library. The meals were not only delicious but also visually delightful! This time, I stayed with my son, and he was very happy to have spent such a precious time. The staff's service was attentive and pleasant. I would love to stay here again!

    Worried about the heavy rain and power outage, but relieved to return home safely the next morning.

    I stay here once a year because I like the atmosphere. This time, after dinner, we were hit by thunder and heavy rain (over 100mm per hour), which was quite frightening. The announcements inside the accommodation were hard to hear, but I understood that we needed to stay indoors for safety. However, during the night, there was a power outage, and when I woke up, there was no water supply either. The private open-air bath in the room couldn't be used as it only had lukewarm water. Still, it helped that I could use it to flush the toilet and wash my face. Around 7 AM, I went to check at the lobby since I couldn’t grasp the situation. They informed me that a fallen tree had knocked down an electric pole and restoration work was underway but with no clear timeline for recovery. With no other choice, we decided to leave immediately. We were given rice balls and water before leaving and received ¥10,000 in cash as compensation for our accommodation fee (offsetting drink charges from dinner). They sent us off politely with apologies. While understanding this was an unavoidable situation due to natural forces, better guidance during emergencies and having flashlights available in rooms would have been appreciated.

    The most wonderful accommodation in 50 years of life

    Exhausted from a demanding job, I made a last-minute reservation on the morning of my unexpected holiday. Tateshina is one of my favorite places to visit every year. I had visited this ryokan three times before for day-use baths, but after seeing videos of its renovation, I had been longing to stay here. This time, I chose it as the destination for my first-ever solo trip. From check-in to check-out, everything was exceptional and deeply moving. The amenities, the view from the room, the variety of baths including stone saunas, the beautifully presented and original meals bursting with flavor, attentive service, an impressive collection of books in their library lounge, and even the tasteful selection in their shop—all exceeded expectations. As someone who loves traveling and has stayed at numerous ryokans before, this was by far the best accommodation I've ever experienced. Upon returning home, I immediately made a reservation for autumn! Next time I'll bring my children and book-loving mother along. With a point card system available as well, I'm determined to become a repeat guest. This is truly an outstanding accommodation where even solo female travelers can feel completely at ease with privacy ensured throughout their stay.

    Couples' Getaway: Fireflies and Deer

    We chose Tateshina Shinyu Onsen, an accommodation where fireflies can be seen, but unfortunately, it seemed we were too late in the season to see them. However, as a delightful surprise, we encountered a deer and its fawn drinking water from the stream while enjoying the private open-air bath. It was truly moving. Tateshina Shinyu Onsen offers excellent onsen, delicious meals, and outstanding hospitality. The experience of seeing wild deer and everything about this accommodation was wonderful. We would love to stay here again if given the opportunity.

    I would love to stay here again.

    I stayed for one night with my parents. The room was spacious enough for three people, and we enjoyed a beautiful mountain view from the room. At check-in, we were delighted to be served welcome drinks like beer and cider in the lobby lounge. The large windows offered a close-up view of the mountains, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Additionally, there were many books available in the lobby, allowing me to read several interesting ones during our stay and enjoy some peaceful moments after a long time. My parents loved it as well, and we would love to stay here again in the future.

    Feedback (Personal Opinions) Positive Points: - Although the building is old, it has been renovated as much as possible and is well-cleaned. - Felt a sense of cleanliness. - Meals are served in private rooms for each group, with attentive service. - Quiet despite having many guests. - The building layout is simple and easy to navigate, avoiding getting lost or walking too much inside. - Those who like this kind of atmosphere may find it appealing. Negative Points: - Found it stressful upon arrival as the Japanese spoken by a foreign female staff member was hard to understand, requiring effort to clarify and concentrate. - The unit bath in the room had an unpleasant smell (likely characteristic of older accommodations). - The open-air bath attached to the room lacked an onsen feel. - The water in the private bath smelled like a swimming pool (why? ... left the bath immediately). - Strong tobacco smell near the smoking area at the entrance of the dining area made it hard to breathe. - Solo travelers are seated in private rooms with windows that are half-smoked glass during meals. - Room keys were not auto-locking. - Personally, one of few accommodations where meals did not suit my taste (wasn't asked beforehand about dislikes or allergies). - Limited towels provided in rooms; no towels available at private baths or large public baths. - Surprisingly no particular focus on rice quality. - At checkout, although online credit card payment was supposedly completed beforehand, I was told otherwise; after apologizing for my "mistake," another staff member handled payment—ultimately only paying for hot spring tax but left feeling uneasy. While there were more negative memories overall, these comments reflect actual experiences during my stay. For solo travelers seeking accommodation with an open-air bath at 80,000 yen (72,000 yen with coupons), this price range is rare—so I had some expectations tempered accordingly... Many places don't accommodate solo stays or charge 1.5–2 times this rate as their minimum price point anyway!

    I stayed in the "Yuubei no Ma" room, where you can enjoy the scenery favored by Yasujiro Ozu. I had a relaxing time while enjoying the flow of the river and the fully bloomed mountain cherry blossoms. It was a wonderful accommodation surrounded by numerous books, evoking a sense of history and culture, leaving a lasting impression. I would love to visit again.

    It was my first visi...

    It was my first visit in over 10 years. The room was on the 5th floor of Miyamatei, a Japanese-style room with two single beds. The beds were good, but being singles, they felt a bit narrow. A semi-double would be preferable. Considering the size of the room, it seems possible to accommodate them or perhaps adopt a Hollywood style arrangement. Additionally, it would be nice to have coffee service in the lobby or dining area. These days, such services are common everywhere. Especially during breakfast time—if there’s a salad bar, wouldn’t it be easy to place a coffee server next to it? Having coffee available in the lobby would also enhance relaxation and likely wouldn’t incur significant costs. Overall, I think this accommodation has become even better after its renewal, and I’d be happy if these improvements were made by my next visit!

    This time, I am bringing my elderly mother.

    Last autumn, during our stay as a couple, we noticed two families with elderly mothers enjoying the bath together. The bath here is well-considered for everyone’s needs, and since my mother loves books so much, I thought she would enjoy it. Coincidentally, my sister living abroad returned home, so we had a wonderful family time together at this accommodation. As my mother has weak legs, I requested a room close to the elevator. We were delighted to receive a prompt response confirming the arrangement—thank you very much! Although she usually eats very little, I was surprised that she finished her dinner without leaving anything behind. The dishes prepared by the chef were incredibly delicious as always and showed great creativity. The staff's hospitality was excellent, and the bath experience was absolutely amazing. Especially in the stone sauna (ganbanyoku), we could relax and refresh our tired bodies thoroughly. This is an accommodation we definitely want to visit again!

    A Hotel Perfect for Book Lovers

    The room and Onsen are great, but the meals are truly disappointing.

    We stayed in the "Yubae Room" for two people and were very satisfied with the interior design, furnishings reminiscent of a world Ozu Yasujiro might appreciate, and the location offering beautiful sunset views. Although there were fewer baths available for men, my wife was pleased with the special open-air bath and stone sauna options for women. The room, baths, atmosphere within the accommodation, and view from the "Yubae Room" were all satisfying. However, we found the meals to be very disappointing. The menu composition was poor with puzzling creative dishes. While the Shinshu beef was delicious and ingredients themselves seemed fine, we felt that the chef's sense of taste was lacking. There’s no need to overcomplicate; more thought should be given to how local ingredients can be enjoyed at their best. For example, if serving Shinshu beef with salt or wasabi is an option, there’s no need to add demi-glace sauce on top. Serving oyaki alongside creative croquettes and liver pâté at once also felt odd—if liver pâté is served, freshly baked bread would make more sense as a pairing. The seaweed wrapped around salmon seemed unnecessary as well; it detracted from rather than enhanced its flavor. Reducing dish variety while focusing on truly delicious ingredients and thoughtful preparation would improve things significantly—the chef's personal preferences seem overly dominant here. This accommodation seems best enjoyed by skipping meals altogether while appreciating just its rooms and baths instead; dining outside offers better satisfaction in terms of both quality and cost-effectiveness overall!

    Wonderful atmosphere. Likely to be appreciated by foreign guests.

    The service is simply outstanding. From the inquiry stage before our stay, all the staff who answered the phone were polite, which raised our expectations. During our stay, every staff member, including those at the front desk, dining area, and cleaning staff, provided truly heartfelt service that made us feel warm. The meals were carefully prepared using local ingredients and served in charming dishes with creative touches. We enjoyed both the taste and presentation each time. Our family had a Multiple Night Stay, and they changed the menu for us each time. Although there were previous Reviews mentioning small portions, we found them to be sufficient. The serving staff was also very courteous; every staff member we passed in the dining area greeted us with "Good evening" or "Good morning," making eye contact. The building shows its age but has a wonderful atmosphere and is meticulously cleaned for a pleasant stay. The lobby space with numerous books and lovely chairs was particularly impressive; it created a great ambiance where guests quietly read their chosen books. There was also an abundance of picture books and children's literature for kids; my child in lower elementary school was engrossed in reading several books. As we left the Property (Stays), my child happily said, "Which book should I borrow next?" so we're looking forward to visiting again.

    It was a fun Property.

    The building itself seems old, but the interior has been beautifully renovated, giving the impression of a Property that has put in a lot of effort. The lobby features a variety of lovely chairs and many books; although I couldn't read much during my one-night stay, just looking at them was exciting. The interior has a Taisho Romantic style, which might be a matter of personal preference, but I absolutely loved the atmosphere. The Room I stayed in was a corner Room on the 5th floor, offering an excellent view. Meals were served in private dining spaces, which was a nice touch, and unlike typical Onsen Ryokan cuisine, the dishes were creative and made with plenty of local ingredients—both interesting and delicious. The baths were spacious, especially the open-air Onsen, which had a great sense of openness. For women, there is also a stone sauna and another open-air bath. Additionally, there are private open-air baths available, so there’s plenty to do, keeping you busy (in a good way, of course!). The stone sauna and the outdoor open-air bath are exclusively for women, which is a great feature for female guests. However, while the exclusivity of the stone sauna is understandable due to its structure, it might be nice if the outdoor open-air bath had a gender rotation system. The staff, mostly young Japanese individuals, left a professional and well-mannered impression. I think this Property is perfect for a girls' trip or a relaxing couple's getaway.
