A blissful anniversary surrounded by books. It was a place where the whole family could smile.

We stayed here for a special anniversary, and it turned out to be an even more wonderful stay than we had expected. Spending time surrounded by an overwhelming collection of books was truly exceptional, and we were also soothed by the calm atmosphere created by fellow guests who love books. Our whole family was deeply impressed by the humorous service from the male staff member who looked after us at the restaurant (Mr. O). Even our energetic son quickly warmed up to him, and he was able to stay seated with a smile until the very end thanks to his support. We are sincerely grateful for his warm kindness toward children. This holiday, spent with our favorite book in hand, became the best celebration for us. We would love to visit again in a different season.

    Highly satisfied.

We stayed here to celebrate our grandchild’s acceptance into high school. This was our third stay, and every time we visit, we can truly feel the spirit of this Accommodation, built around a Taisho Romantic concept. The meals are always fresh and innovative, and delicious. My daughter and grandchildren, who were staying for the first time, were very satisfied and said they would love to come again. I’m glad I brought them. No matter what season we visit, there is a quiet, soothing atmosphere here. Please continue to preserve this ambiance for years to come.

This Accommodation was perfect for book lovers!

The lounge space is simply wonderful—just being there is soothing. I can pick up any book that catches my eye and start reading; it truly feels like a luxury. The Onsen was also excellent! The meals are carefully prepared and delicious. Our Room was the most compact one, Suzuran, but that size was actually perfect for traveling with a small child—and I was quietly happy that my child even went to the bathroom alone in the middle of the night. All of the staff were very pleasant, and I definitely want to come back. If there’s any downside, it’s that the stay was so amazing that going back to work feels way too hard.

    We had a great time.

I stayed for one night in February. I had a Room with a private open-air bath, so I wasn’t planning to use the public bath, but when I went, it was truly wonderful—including the large communal bath and the open-air bath. Next time, I’d definitely like to try the hot stone sauna as well. The concept of this trip was “reading a classic castle-style mystery in a snowy mountain lodge,” so I stopped by the shop hoping to enjoy it with some red wine in my Room, but they only had 750 ml bottles, which was a bit disappointing. From the lounge onward, the classical atmosphere is fantastic and really lifts your spirits. I’ve been away from paper books for over 10 years and use only Kindle now, but it felt nostalgic and I couldn’t help picking one up. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Breakfast is usually bread for me, but this time I enjoyed an excellent Japanese-style breakfast for the first time in a while. I’d love to visit again. Next time, I plan to settle into a book in the lounge as well. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Excellent facilities, and the mildly warm Onsen is perfect for a long soak.

As the title suggests, the Facility is very impressive. There are several reservable riverside open-air baths, and the large public bath is also very comfortable—overall, it’s a great place to enjoy the Onsen. What surprised me a bit was the dinner menu. For example, a pumpkin and hanabiratake mushroom soup was served in a large shared hot pot style, which felt somewhat underwhelming. With all due respect, there were also choices such as simmering eel in demi-glace sauce (which seemed to overwhelm what should be a delicate ingredient), or serving excellent Shinshu beef alongside dried-tasting warm lotus root and something like fluffy potato—there were many elements I found disappointing. My family, who had just returned from overseas and was looking forward to Japanese food, also left some dishes unfinished. On the other hand, breakfast was delicious and felt very Shinshu- and Japan-like: salad with a tasty miso dip, miso soup, tofu, and dressed nameko mushrooms with greens. That said, thank you very much for taking care of us. We truly appreciate this valuable experience. One more note: we were told that futons would be laid out for us, but it wasn’t done in time so we did it ourselves. If that is the standard arrangement from the start, it’s no problem at all—I know it’s hard work. The morning pickup was handled promptly. Thank you again.

    A stunning library!

I stayed at Tateshina Club, and the Room was spacious with beautiful furnishings. Meals were served in a private dining room, so even as a solo traveler I could relax and enjoy them. Although I didn’t leave any comments when making my Reservation, they prepared a birthday dessert plate for my stay and even gave me a photo as a gift—I was truly touched by the subtle surprise. There are three Onsen baths, including private options, and I enjoyed them all. Above all, the entire Hotel feels like a library. It was only a one-night stay this time, but I wanted to keep reading the book I picked up during my visit, so I promptly bought it on Amazon. Rather than being lively and noisy, this is the perfect Accommodation for anyone looking for a calm, unhurried stay. The staff were also wonderfully attentive, making it a very pleasant trip.

Thank you for your hospitality. This was our second stay in two years, but we were disappointed with the Western-style children’s menu on the first day—it felt like something from a family restaurant. On the second day’s Western-style dinner, we understand serving risotto, but it would have been nice to have croissants or dinner rolls as well. We couldn’t help feeling that there was too much difference in the dinner offerings between busy periods and normal times. Disappointing.

    A Peaceful, Relaxing Environment

I visited Oyado Shin-yu last June, surrounded by fresh greenery. With those wonderful memories in my heart, I returned to experience the midwinter atmosphere as well. I was truly impressed by Tateshina’s beautiful snowy scenery and the unchanged hospitality. The meals focus on local specialties, and I love how beautifully presented and delicious they are. The menu is also lovely, so next time I plan to visit in spring and autumn to complete all four seasons. Thank you for the wonderful memories.

There’s never enough time—in the best way.

The book library exceeded my expectations. Not only was the collection extensive, but the atmosphere was wonderful as well. The exhibits were also substantial throughout the property beyond the library, and I didn’t have enough time to fully enjoy the books—including their bindings. I can see why it’s ideal for a quiet stay and a Multiple Night Stay. The Room was old but clean, which was fine; however, since it faces the parking lot and we spent most of our time in the library, I think I might choose a different Room next time. The meals were good overall, but most of the soups were lukewarm. Overall, it was an Accommodation that made me want to return.

To put it modestly: “Absolutely the best!”

“We’d love to soak in an Onsen while watching the snow fall.” That’s what brought us to Tateshina Shinyu Onsen. We stayed in the “Yuubae Room,” a Room associated with Yasujiro Ozu, one of Japan’s most renowned film directors of the Showa era. Every moment at Shinyu Onsen was, to put it mildly, far beyond amazing!! We will definitely be back. Thank you so much.

The stunning lobby is truly impressive.

A beautiful space themed around books. This alone makes it worth staying. The interior design is stunning, and there are small but exquisite paintings throughout the accommodation. Simply walking around and discovering them is enjoyable. The meals were incredibly delicious, with original dishes to savor as well. The salad dressings at the breakfast salad bar were all tasty, featuring local specialties like kanten (agar jelly) from Nagano, which was a delightful touch. One concern was that the menu changes seasonally; however, many of the dishes were the same as those served during my previous stay in a different season. A bit more variety in the menu would be appreciated. Additionally, while we were informed about rice refills during dinner, it wasn’t until later that we learned curry refills were also available. It was also disappointing that when I asked about an event starting at 4 PM at reception, I wasn’t informed about the hot wine service available until 8 PM—I only realized this on the following morning. The private bath was excellent as well; however, during midwinter, walking to the bath can be extremely cold and slightly uncomfortable.

    Thank you for your patronage.

The staff's warm and welcoming service was excellent. Thank you very much. The Room, food, and bath were all very satisfying. There were so many books that one night wasn't enough to enjoy them all. Next time, I would like to stay for two nights. One slightly disappointing point was that the private open-air bath was not warm enough, which was a bit unfortunate.

    The wine was not good!

During dinner, we ordered the sommelier's recommended tasting set of two red wines, a glass of Merlot red wine, and a glass of sparkling wine. Unfortunately, none had much fruit aroma and the alcohol scent was overpowering, making it difficult to enjoy the red wines. This detracted from what could have been an excellent dining experience. While promoting local wines is a great concept, it was disappointing that the sommelier's recommendations were of such poor quality.

It's too good to waste time sleeping.

We stayed at the accommodation with our family during the New Year. After reading reviews, we were very much looking forward to it. From the moment we stepped into the entrance, our expectations were exceeded, and it felt like a dream had begun in such a beautiful setting. The atmosphere of the lounge was absolutely wonderful, perhaps due to its historical significance? It was an indescribably stunning space. The room we happened to reserve at Tateshina Club was so amazing that I believe it might be one of the best experiences I've ever had at my age. Both dinner and breakfast were highly satisfying, but especially breakfast with traditional New Year's dishes like osechi and ozoni allowed us to enjoy a festive mood while savoring delicious food. All of the staff members were pleasant and made our stay very comfortable. The open-air bath was fantastic, there were so many books I wanted to read, and time felt too short—I even hesitated to go to sleep! Next time, I would love a multiple night stay. Thank you again!

The staff's hospitality and service were excellent. The atmosphere in the lobby had a unique charm not found in other Onsen accommodations, which was wonderful. The souvenir products were all very appealing. The Onsen itself had a pleasant water temperature and a tatami-covered ambiance, and the cuisine was outstanding overall in terms of taste, presentation, and tableware. However, regular maintenance is necessary as there were noticeable scratches and stains on tables and storage areas in the room, exposed pipes under the bathtub, as well as stains and scratches on the sink area. I have stayed three times before in different rooms, but these issues seem to be consistent across all rooms.

    A Place to Relax

This was our second visit. Blessed with good weather, we enjoyed the beautiful view of Mt. Yatsugatake from the shuttle service on our way to the accommodation. I especially wanted to bring my daughter who lives abroad, so it was wonderful to relax and spend quality time together as a family of three after a long time. The meals, onsen, and staff were all excellent, making it a truly satisfying trip. Thank you very much. We definitely hope to visit again!

    Accommodation for Book Lovers

A book-loving mother enjoyed reading in the lobby lounge from 4:30 AM. She was very satisfied, saying, "It was quiet (of course) and relaxing." The lounge's interior is stunning, and the old photos displayed on the hallway walls are captivating. There are many valuable items to see, such as handwritten works and manuscripts by authors who visited the accommodation—worth a visit just for these. The dinner soup curry was delicious, though it was a bit disappointing that the carrots and potatoes seemed frozen. Other than that, everything was excellent, making this one of the accommodations I would love to visit again.

    Despite the stunning lobby,

The welcome and lobby welcome drink were great. The single bed in the Room is narrow, and the bath towels and face towels are of poor quality. Dinner has a nice atmosphere, but each dish lacks flavor and deliciousness, including the soy milk hot pot which also lacks taste. For breakfast, instead of soy milk, at least yudofu would be better. Both dinner and breakfast lack flavor and deliciousness. We hope for more delicious meals in the future.

    The breakfast was delicious.

This was my second stay as the staff were excellent during my previous visit. This time, the staff seemed very busy. Dinner was average. The appetizer had no sauce, so it was taken back to the kitchen after I had already started eating in order to add sauce. Additionally, it took a long time for drinks to be served, which made it difficult to enjoy the meal. Breakfast was not very filling but tasted good. Both during check-in and dinner, the staff appeared rushed and unsettled, which affected the atmosphere. It’s unfortunate that this time wasn’t as smooth and relaxing as my previous experience with their smart service.

    Great value for money.

The lounge surrounded by books is a unique feature. While the public bath lacks a great view and there is no sauna, the autumn foliage was beautiful, making for a pleasant experience. The room felt slightly dated but was clean. Some noise from the upper floors was noticeable. Overall, the service was excellent. Check-in is at 2:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM, allowing for a relaxed stay.

It was a wonderful place where hospitality could be seen everywhere.

I stayed here for a birthday trip. There were foreign staff members, but their perfect Japanese and impeccable manners made me feel like I learned something from them. The Onsen and the food were flawless! However, while Wi-Fi worked in the lobby, it disconnected quickly in the room and switched to Starlink, which was inconvenient. Since this Hotel recommends reading books, I was happy that the room lighting was very bright.

    What an amazing accommodation!

I had some expectations based on prior information, but seeing is believing. The satisfaction I felt far exceeded my imagination. As someone who loves traveling and stays at dozens of hotels and ryokans annually, I can confidently say that even paying several times more than the price here would not have brought me this level of excitement in recent years. The unique atmosphere here is incomparable to luxurious international chain hotels with extensive facilities or high-priced ryokans boasting renovated rooms with private open-air baths. I was so impressed that I couldn't help but immediately share the excellence of this accommodation with my friends and acquaintances upon returning home. Everyone says they definitely want to stay here at least once. I also look forward to visiting again in a different season!

A very pleasant accommodation with a great atmosphere, which my friends and their spouse also loved. The room had an open-air onsen, but the shower was only in the bath area, and accessing the shower and onsen required passing through the room, which was inconvenient. Additionally, the washroom was a bit small. However, we were able to relax and unwind at this accommodation. We would love to stay here again if we have another opportunity.

A charming Ryokan reminiscent of a library

Be amazed as you step into the reception area on the 2nd floor of the main building. The vast space, adorned with luxurious carpets, features walls lined with towering bookshelves reaching up to the ceiling. While Meiji and Taisho literature collections stand out, there is an extensive range of genres from both Japan and abroad, surpassing even a "prefectural library." The corridor leading to the annex is flanked by bookshelves showcasing nearly all "Iwanami Bunko" and "Shinsho" publications, creating a promenade enriched with hanging scrolls, rubbings, and materials from the "Araragi School," which are equally impressive. The Onsen offers a slightly lukewarm temperature but provides an exceptional experience in its open-air bath while listening to the sounds of a mountain stream. Meals are served in private dining rooms for both dinner and breakfast; they were impeccable in quality and quantity, featuring rare ingredients that were delightful to savor. Additionally, staff training was excellent, ensuring a comfortable stay. The Room was a special suite on the 3rd floor of the annex building with high-quality interiors and furnishings that left nothing to be desired. Overall, this accommodation can be highly rated for its offerings at such reasonable pricing—a truly satisfying experience!

You can relax and unwind in a very calm environment and atmosphere. Dinner features authentic course meals made with local ingredients, served in private rooms with excellent staff service, making it a highlight of the stay. The open-air bath in the large public bath allows you to feel the autumn ambiance of the mountains, providing great relaxation. The library on the lobby floor is also easy to use, making me want to plan a Multiple Night Stay next time for a reading retreat.

    Accommodation for Book Lovers

A peaceful and relaxing accommodation. The onsen is tranquil and atmospheric, with excellent water that leaves your skin moisturized. The private outdoor bath service is outstanding. Although I stayed for only one night on my first visit, I would like to stay for several days next time. There is a large collection of books, making it a great place to enjoy reading at leisure. However, while the lighting is calm and soothing, it felt slightly dim for reading comfortably. The meals were delicious. At the liquor store nearby, you could buy a 720ml bottle of sake for the price of one serving here, so I decided not to order sake this time.
