The other day, we drove from Nagoya in the heat. I had seen online in advance that there was parking, but I missed it and drove past the Accommodation entrance. It looked like the parking area was being expanded, so it should be easier to find next time. The Room was a comfortable size with nothing lacking, and the bath was a unique round cypress tub. Bathing with the window open while looking out over Kyoto’s streetscape and watching people walk by was very relaxing. The garden and rear gate seemed to be remnants of a former inn or residence, and on a walk I realized that Murin-an Garden and Hyotei are right next door. I think this is an Accommodation you can truly enjoy.

    Excellent

Having fallen in love with Fufu, we have visited Hakone three times and Karuizawa once, and this time we stayed at Fufu Kyoto. The bamboo grove atmosphere was wonderful, the staff were very welcoming, and we truly appreciated the Room upgrade and your warm hospitality. As it was my husband’s birthday, we were also grateful for the surprise at dinner. Thanks to you, we had a lovely summer holiday.

    The ending is…

I stayed at Fufu Nara and Fufu Kyoto for two consecutive nights, but honestly I was not very satisfied. When being shown to my Room, I had large luggage, but I was surprised that the staff did not offer to carry it for me. At Fufu Nara, baby amenities such as baby soap and moisturizer were provided, which I thought was great. However, there were none at Kyoto. I asked just in case, but was told they did not have them. The phone response at that time also did not feel like a luxury Accommodation: “Baby soap…? We don’t… have it…” When I requested ice, it was served in a wooden container, but there were areas that appeared darkened, likely due to mold. I noticed after it melted, but I don’t think it is suitable for holding something meant to be consumed. As others have mentioned in their Reviews, the worst part was at departure. A staff member told me the car was ready and guided me to the parking area, but it had been placed in an extremely narrow spot that was the hardest to get out of. On top of that, even though they guided me to the car, the staff member did not have my car key and hurried back to retrieve it. Construction work was being done right next to the car and white sand/dust was blowing onto the road; I couldn’t put my luggage down and had to wait while holding heavy bags. Why does this happen? There seemed to be many young staff members—perhaps part-time—and my impression was that people without an understanding of hospitality were working there. What surprised me most is that similar Reviews existed years ago as well. It’s not good that nothing has improved. I don’t think I will stay with the Fufu group again.

    OH!くん

    It was a wonderful Room.

My mother wanted to relax and enjoy a bath in the Room, and we also liked Fufu Nara, so we chose Fufu again this time. We wanted all four of us to stay in the same Room, so we made a Reservation for a larger Room. When the staff escorted us, they explained that it was the largest Room at Fufu. Breakfast was also served in our Room, which made for a very relaxing stay. We had a great view of fresh greenery from the Room, creating a calm atmosphere. As mentioned in other Reviews, you may have to wait a little at checkout. Aside from that, I think it’s an excellent Hotel.

    We had a wonderful stay.

This was my first stay. The luxurious hospitality was wonderful. I was especially impressed by the staff member who assisted us from check-in and explained the Room. I was also satisfied with the Room and breakfast. Next time, I would like to stay in a higher-grade Room.

We stayed here for our family trip during the summer holidays. After being truly impressed by a previous stay at Fufu Nara, we had long wanted to visit Fufu Kyoto, and it was a dream come true. Everything met our expectations, and we were extremely satisfied.

I really love this accommodation, but...

I love this Accommodation and have stayed at various Fufu properties across Japan. This time, I stayed for two nights in the “Fufu Luxury Corner Suite (Twin)” to see the Lake Biwa fireworks. ■ What I liked - Although it was not free-flowing hot spring water and instead brought-in hot spring water, it was more than satisfying. - The meals here are always excellent. This time I only had breakfast, but the wide variety of dishes was very satisfying. That said, the rice cooked in a clay pot was a bit too soft for my taste. - The Japanese garden is beautiful and enjoyable to stroll around. ■ What disappointed me - The in-Room extension handset was broken, so calls kept cutting out. By the next day it could no longer make or receive calls, so I reported it. Even after it was supposedly fixed, the call quality remained choppy. - There was a fairly loud humming noise from what seemed to be an air vent or AC outlet above the sink (not sure which). Sometimes it was louder and sometimes quieter, but at bedtime it was unbearable. I slept with both the bathroom door and bedroom door closed, but once you notice it, it really bothers you. - Without realizing it (my oversight), I had booked a Plan with no housekeeping. I understand no bed-making or cleaning; however, towels and loungewear obviously can’t be reused the next day. When I requested replacements, I was told: “You have reserved a no-housekeeping Plan; if you need that service there will be an additional fee,” which left me very confused. A no-housekeeping Plan should clearly state that towels and loungewear will not be replaced—or this should be explained clearly at check-in. No one expects to use the same towels and loungewear as the day before. In the end they brought replacements, so it did not turn into a bigger issue. - I heard there is a bar open from 21:00 to 23:00, so we hurried back after dinner and arrived at 22:40—only to be told “last order is 22:30.” This should have been mentioned at check-in. I will continue staying at other Fufu properties in the future, but I won’t return to Kyoto. Compared with ordinary Accommodation options this may still pass overall; however, considering value for money there are many better places available, so this trip ended up being disappointing for me.

It was a wonderful trip to Kyoto.

With the heat being so intense, we decided to take it easy at our Accommodation on this trip and chose Fufu Kyoto, which we had wanted to stay at for a long time. Even though we arrived late, we truly appreciated you coming out to welcome us in the heat. Every staff member greeted us politely, and from start to finish we were able to spend our time in complete comfort. In the Room, cold tea was prepared for us, which was a relief after arriving. Everything we needed was thoughtfully provided in just the right way, and we were able to stay without any inconvenience. The meals in particular were carefully crafted with seasonal dishes down to the smallest details; they were delicious, and both of my parents were very satisfied. We were also grateful to receive cold water when departing. We are glad we chose this Accommodation. Thank you very much.

The Perfect Hotel for Special Occasions

We stayed here for my wife’s birthday. The food was outstanding—everything was delicious, and we were extremely satisfied. Our Room also had a private Onsen, and we enjoyed it right up until just before check-out! Even while we were waiting for our taxi to arrive, the staff kindly smiled for photos and checked in on us with thoughtful attention, which we really appreciated. One thing that stood out was that all drinks required an additional charge and had to be ordered separately.

The meals are excellent in both quality and quantity.

We were very satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. The seasonal ingredients and presentation were excellent. The bathroom with a hinoki bathtub, the Room size and furnishings, and the firmness of the bed were all very comfortable. The staff were kind and attentive. However, the location is a tough walk from the subway station in midsummer.

    Prime Location

A superb location: a 5-minute walk to Nanzen-ji Temple, Yamagata Aritomo’s former villa next door, and Hyotei just behind. It’s also about a 20-minute walk to Kodaiji Temple via Chion-in Temple and Maruyama Park—an ideal route for a pleasant stroll. Some staff members are still getting used to things, but their genuine hospitality came through more than enough, making for a very comfortable stay. The intimate size of the Facility creates just the right sense of distance between guests and staff, and both the Facility and amenities were excellent—making this a memorable trip to Kyoto. To everyone at Fufu Kyoto, thank you very much. I would love to stay again.

An unpleasant stay due to poor staff quality

After check-in, the checkout process was unbelievably slow. How long are we supposed to wait? We were spoken to in English repeatedly. It made us uncomfortable. When my child developed a fever, I asked the front desk late at night if they had a thermometer, and they said they didn’t. They asked if there was anything else; I said no because there wasn’t. The next morning, after my husband took our child to the hospital, they mentioned things like cooling gel sheets. They should have told us earlier. At dinner, even when I asked questions about the food, the serving staff didn’t seem able to understand. Because of a mistake by the service staff, an allergen ingredient was served to my child who has allergies. For a luxury Accommodation, this level of service and skill is unacceptable. There was none of the thoughtful or flexible hospitality you would expect from an established place. It felt like it was staffed only by young part-time workers with little or no experience in customer service. An inattentive Accommodation. How long can they keep operating at this quality level in Kyoto? Is it just targeting inbound tourists because it’s Kyoto? I will not stay at Fufu again.

This Instagram-worthy accommodation seems to have issues with staff quality.

I’ve stayed at many Accommodations, but I was shocked that this was the first place that felt like it was all about being “Instagrammable” and not worth the price. First, the only dinner slot available was 8:30 PM. We arrived before 8:30, but were told to wait. Even after 8:30 passed, no one said anything to us, and we were only shown to our table after we spoke up. (I thought it started at 8:30—was it a “please come after 8:30” system?) We asked for our child’s meal to be brought out all at once as soon as possible, but nothing arrived until after 9 PM. Also, until we specifically requested them for our small child, there were no forks or spoons—only regular chopsticks. Even ordinary restaurants can accommodate this. And although it was obvious once seated that a high chair was needed, none was prepared until we asked. When the food arrived, an egg dish was served to a child with an egg allergy—twice. How is information shared here? Don’t you confirm before serving? It’s good we noticed, but what if they had eaten it? There didn’t seem to be an assigned waiter; if so, isn’t that something that should be properly communicated? After that, tempura came out and when I asked whether it contained egg or not (it shouldn’t), they went back to check. Given what had already happened earlier, you should at least confirm before serving... At checkout I asked about unclear charges on the bill, but they couldn’t explain them. How can the staff member handling payment not know what they are charging for...? They said they were temporary staff—were the other servers part-time as well? This isn’t a Business Hotel; for an Accommodation at this price point, I felt the staff quality was far too poor. Even though the meal itself tasted very good and the Room was nice, everything left such a bad impression that we couldn’t enjoy our stay at all. We paid 200,000 yen to stay as a family at this well-known Accommodation, but it ended up being a disappointing experience.

    While the Facility, ...

While the Facility, Room, and meals were excellent, the service was extremely disappointing. There was no reply to my email inquiry before our stay. At check-in we were kept waiting for a long time, and guests who arrived after us were shown to their rooms first. At dinner the area around us was noisy; after consulting with staff, we ended up moving seats ourselves. In addition, although we had requested in-room breakfast, it appears it had been registered in the management system as a restaurant breakfast, so nothing was delivered at the scheduled time. We were told this was only discovered after we asked—so it did not feel like a simple data-entry mistake; it raised concerns about follow-up checks and internal communication afterward as well. Because multiple issues occurred, we asked for an explanation at checkout. However, the manager who assisted us did not seem to fully understand what had happened and did not come across as sincere. More than each individual mistake, what disappointed us most was that throughout our stay we never felt any effort to understand our position or feelings. Afterward I read the general manager’s reply on IKYU Review(s), and looking back on how this was handled during our stay, I found myself oddly understanding why that response felt so formulaic. We expected service and hospitality commensurate with the price, so it is truly disappointing that these issues continued throughout our stay. There is a significant gap between the Accommodation’s appeal and its service standards and organizational response. After discussing it with my companion(s), we have concluded that we will not return.

Regarding the check-in experience, which significantly detracted from the overall stay.

While we found the Accommodation and the room itself very appealing, the way we were treated at check-in was extremely disappointing, and we strongly hope for improvement going forward. The staff member I am referring to is the young Chinese male staff member who handled our check-in at around 3:30 p.m. on July 1. He was wearing glasses. As there appeared to be multiple male staff members with glasses who speak Chinese, I would like you to confirm the Accommodation records and duty assignments for that day to ensure you identify the correct person. Throughout the entire interaction, he did not address me—the Reserver—even once, nor did he make eye contact with me. Since both of us speak Chinese, this was not a language issue. The Reservation was also under my name, and it should have been obvious from my passport that I was the Reserver. Despite this, all explanations about the property and our stay were directed only to my male companion, as if I were not present. Regarding the Receipt as well, he asked my companion rather than me; even after my companion indicated that he should confirm with me (the Reserver), he continued speaking while still facing my companion. When I showed him—on my phone screen—the information for how to issue the Receipt, he neither looked at me nor spoke to me; he silently took a photo of my screen. Immediately afterward, despite my name being printed in the signature field, he again asked my companion for a signature. This series of actions left me feeling not just confused but deeply insulted. Later, when guiding us to our room and around the property, he walked right beside my companion and directed all explanations solely to him without speaking to me at all. It did not feel like a one-time oversight; from check-in through room guidance, it felt consistent—as though only I was intentionally excluded—which I consider a very serious issue. At a high-priced Accommodation such treatment—where a guest who is also the Reserver is effectively ignored due to gender—is unacceptable. Because we had been looking forward so much to this Facility/Accommodation experience, this response made me feel strong discomfort and alienation from the moment we arrived, and throughout our stay afterward I could not shake those feelings.

    What a waste.

The Facility and Room were satisfactory, but the staff’s hospitality felt on par with a typical business hotel. They followed the manual, but it didn’t feel genuinely heartfelt. Their smiles and attentiveness may have been even below that of a business hotel.... This is my third stay at my favorite Fufu, but this time was disappointing.

My first stay at Fufu. I had high expectations, but...

I thought Fufu was a luxury Accommodation, but the service was inconsistent and it felt like I stayed there just to get tired. As others have said, there was no greeting on arrival and no send-off on departure. I was told a newspaper would be placed in the Room in the morning, but it wasn’t. There were several other moments where I wondered “huh?”, and it seemed the staff were not coordinating with each other. The meals were also heavily seasoned, perhaps to cater to foreign guests. The use of charcoal felt more like a demonstration, and it didn’t make the food any better. The basics of Japanese cuisine—hot dishes served hot and cold dishes served cold—were not upheld. It seems staff training is lacking. When leaving, a staff member said “Your taxi has arrived” and then disappeared somewhere. This is my first time experiencing that at a Hotel at this price point. For some reason, they are kind to foreigners. I agree with Reviews saying this is an Accommodation aimed at foreigners and younger guests. The moment I arrived at the next long-established Hotel, staff rushed over, took my luggage from the car, and guided me to reception—I felt relieved to be back at a Hotel with normal service standards. Also, in response to Reviews expressing similar impressions to mine, there were replies from management using nearly identical wording that made me suspect they were copied-and-pasted—so no reply is necessary here either.

    The open-air bath was wonderful!

A long-awaited stay at Fufu Kyoto. We traveled with a preschool child, and with a zoo nearby, we were able to enjoy sightseeing in the area as well. Breakfast was served in our Room, so we could eat calmly and comfortably. The private open-air bath in the guest Room was also wonderful. On the downside, one light bulb in the Room was broken. We asked for it to be checked, but it still wouldn’t turn on—this was the only disappointing point. For that reason, I rated the Room and Facility 4. Other than that, it was a very nice Ryokan!

    The ending was disappointing.

I had been looking forward to staying at Fufu Kyoto. The Room was spacious, clean, and wonderful. The bath was a large hinoki-wood bath, so I could relax and soak comfortably. For breakfast, I chose 9:30 in the Room because I was told that would allow an 11:30 check-out. Breakfast was Japanese-style, and everything was delicious. With this stay, I felt a level of satisfaction worthy of 4 or even 5 stars. Before check-out, I enjoyed the sweets in the Room so much that I went to the lobby to buy some. I was told I could also settle my check-out bill at the same time as purchasing the sweets, so I did. When I went to pick up my luggage and returned the key, I said that check-out had already been completed. However, a young male staff member chased after me and said “Money...”. I replied that payment had already been completed and asked if he needed me to issue a Receipt. He seemed dissatisfied. It made me feel as though it was my fault, which left me uncomfortable at the end. It’s disappointing because otherwise I was very satisfied.

The food was excellent, but the service and the Room cleanliness were somewhat disappointing.

The food was simply delicious and truly comforting. If I go again, I definitely want to book a plan with two meals. I bought two souvenir tumblers via the in-Room tablet, but the price shown on the tablet was different from what I was charged at checkout. They corrected it to match the tablet price after I pointed it out, but there was no apology. If I hadn’t noticed, I would have overpaid by 1,000 yen—and that’s honestly unsettling. There were also a few other moments where the service made me nervous, so I didn’t feel fully at ease. There was visible pink slime around the bathroom faucet, which was unpleasant, so I wiped it off myself. Since you get close to the sink to wash your face and such, I wondered why it hadn’t been cleaned properly. Was it because I made my Reservation at the last minute? Overall there were quite a few disappointing points, but the food was outstanding—so I’d still like to try other Fufu properties’ cuisine!

    It was a wonderful treat.

It was a wonderful space filled with a lovely Japanese fragrance. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the drink pairing at dinner included non-alcoholic options, so I could enjoy it even without drinking alcohol. The Room was also beautiful; I had a truly luxurious time sipping tea brewed in an iron kettle while taking in the view outside. The bath also had the soothing scent of hinoki cypress, and I was able to relax deeply. I’d love to visit again as a reward for working hard. Thank you for such a wonderful stay.

    A peaceful place to relax

Fufu Kyoto is located south of Heian Shrine and is conveniently accessible by subway. The corridors are a little dim, but they feel like walking through Kyoto’s narrow lanes, which is somehow very calming. The garden isn’t large, but a cool breeze was blowing through it, making it especially pleasant for this season. As for the meals, seasonal dishes such as pike conger (hamo) were served, and everything was truly delicious. Just one request: both the facilities and the service are excellent, but it seems you employ staff from overseas. I think it would be better if they studied a bit more Japanese—being asked the same questions repeatedly was a little frustrating.

    It was a wonderful Hotel.

On a rainy day, it was difficult to find the entrance by car, but we truly appreciated the staff’s kind assistance afterward, which raised our expectations for our one-night stay. The meals, bath, and bedding were all excellent. The system of placing used cups and glasses in the small window by the entrance—rather than leaving them on the table—and finding clean dishes prepared by morning was outstanding!! We weren’t used to making tea with an iron kettle, so we couldn’t do it very well. This became one of our favorite places in Kyoto, and it made us want to try all of Fufu’s Hotels.

    The hardware is perfect, but

The facilities were perfect, exactly as expected. The amenities provided, the meal presentation, and the Room were all complete and comfortable, with nothing lacking. However, because the bath is made of cypress wood, it inevitably gets damaged and stains remain, so visually it was a bit disappointing... When I looked at the window wondering if it could be opened, the sash was covered in grime; my fingers turned pitch-black when I touched it, which felt unpleasant. Even though it’s an Onsen, I didn’t feel like going in multiple times. Very disappointing. As for the meals, the only thing we could genuinely say “This is delicious!” about was the meat—overall it didn’t meet expectations. The person bringing the dishes was a foreign staff member, so I had to concentrate to understand them and it was tiring. For my birthday celebration as well, there was only a small pre-made chocolate plate placed on the dessert. The person who brought breakfast and other staff weren’t rude or unpleasant, but they didn’t make any extra conversation at all—only speaking when spoken to... Overall, everything is well equipped, but something felt missing... That was my impression of this Accommodation.

    Comfortable service

This was one of the Accommodations I had always wanted to stay at, and ever since deciding on a stay at Fufu Kyoto, I had been looking forward to visiting. First, after we arrived at the Hotel, we were warmly welcomed by staff member Y, whose service left a wonderful impression. Whenever they saw us within the Facility, they always addressed us by name—true hospitality. There were many younger staff members as well, and it felt like they genuinely enjoyed their work. We could sense everyone’s commitment to creating a great Hotel, which was truly refreshing. Just like the service, the Facility and the cuisine were also excellent. This has become an Accommodation we would love to return to. Thank you very much.
