I was very satisfied...
I was very satisfied with both the meals and the staff. Since it was described as an open-air bath, I assumed it would be an Onsen, but it wasn’t, which was very disappointing. That’s on me for not checking more carefully. But normally, if it says “open-air bath,” wouldn’t most people assume it’s an Onsen? At other Facility locations as well... It was summer vacation, so there were many children staying. There were plenty of quiet seating areas, but there were also a few areas that were far too noisy—beyond what felt acceptable. I couldn’t understand what direction this Facility is aiming for. It was such a shame. I felt sorry for the staff. It felt like a missed opportunity. Is it trying to be a mass-market Facility? Or a luxury Facility? In any case, thank you very much.

We recommend pairing it with Japanese sake.
This Accommodation is a favorite of mine, and I’ve stayed many times. However, on my previous stay, the check-in process had changed from the sofa seating area to the counter, and the welcome drinks and sweets were gone. If it had stayed that way, I almost would have lowered my rating. Even though there are plenty of sofa seats with great views, it was disappointing to have to check in at the counter. I mentioned this last time as well—check-in is the first impression of an Accommodation. The drinks and sweets had become self-service, but I’m glad that check-in at the sofa seating area has been brought back. Towels are no longer provided in the large public bath area, so you now need to bring them from your Room. It’s a bit inconvenient, but I suppose it can’t be helped from an eco-friendly perspective. I’ve said various things, but because of the wonderful views—and because dinner paired with sake is delicious—I’ll be back again.

It was comfortable, and the food was great.
This was my first stay. The Room was comfortable, and the food was delicious. There was a stargazing and night view watching program, and I joined it. Unfortunately, it was cloudy so we could hardly see any stars, but we were able to enjoy the night view of Nara. If I have the opportunity, I would like to stay again.

It was very relaxing.
We arrived by car, but we couldn’t find the sign in the morning and drove past. After arriving, while waiting to check in, we were served a welcome drink and cake. Above all, the view was wonderful—we could have looked at it forever. We enjoyed nature from the Room, the open-air bath, and the restaurant. Each dish was beautifully presented to engage all five senses, and everything was delicious. Sorry we couldn’t finish the tea rice porridge at breakfast. We had a very relaxing stay. Thank you very much.

We enjoyed the activities.
Although the sky was unfortunately cloudy, we still enjoyed many activities, including the barrel sauna, a stargazing tour, and a hike to the observatory the next day. Breakfast was delicious as well. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Disappointingly poor customer service
We arrived early due to the typhoon, but were met with “What can we help you with?”—that was it. A simple “Welcome, even in this heavy rain” would have been appreciated. At check-in, despite the downpour, we were asked about stargazing and could hardly believe it; we ended up requesting a cancellation. The open-air bath is completely outdoors in heavy rain, and there was no shower—nor any explanation. In the morning, large bags were piled up at the entrance. While waiting for breakfast, staff chatted loudly during preparations; when another guest asked, “It’s a bit early, but…,” they were told “Please go ahead,” while we continued waiting with no consideration shown. None of the staff greeted us or made eye contact. I initially thought this might be a policy to respect privacy, but in reality there was little attentiveness to guests—and the loud private conversations made us regret staying. Travel is often for a special occasion for guests, yet it felt like routine work for the staff, which was disappointing. The only saving grace was an older male staff member who gave us a pleasant “Good morning.” We were also dismayed by the scripted responses from those in charge of service. This seems less like an individual issue and more like a company-wide problem with employee training. The only highlight was dinner—it exceeded expectations—and the sea urchin rice porridge was truly comforting. We were given a discount voucher for next time, but were told it is only valid for Reservations made by phone or through their website; it felt as though they did not want bookings through Reservation sites or travel agencies. We left the Hotel early.

Overall, it was a good stay.
As the Facility has been renovated, everything was clean and well maintained overall, and I was able to relax comfortably. The meals were thoughtfully prepared, with a creative, original touch that I enjoyed. Some Reviews mentioned that drinks were expensive, but they offered locally made Nara alcohol and other options with care, so I felt the pricing was reasonable. The view from the open-air bath was wonderful and quiet, and I could unwind while listening to the trees swaying in the wind. They also kindly took us out at night to see the night view and fireflies, which was a great opportunity since it’s not something I could have done on my own. On the negative side, the fabric on one of the chairs in my Room had many stains, so I didn’t feel comfortable sitting on it. Since this was a Multiple Night Stay, I asked at check-in whether the breakfast menu would change; I was told it would be the same both days. In reality it changed daily, and day two had more distinctive items. Because day one’s breakfast felt fairly standard, my questions ended up creating extra work unnecessarily. I also felt slightly unsettled by some younger staff members’ language and by hearing staff chatting loudly together from behind the front desk area. After dinner, a restaurant staff member asked me to stop by the front desk; when I asked what it was about, they replied that they didn’t know because they were restaurant staff. They later checked and informed me properly, but including this example (and the breakfast menu issue above), I got an overall impression that coordination among staff could be improved. On day two there was heavy rain. They confirmed what time we planned to use the open-air bath; when I asked whether it could still be used in rainy weather, they said it depended on wind direction. In fact there was no roof and it wasn’t really usable in those conditions. Since they seemed familiar with the Facility details, clearer guidance would have been appreciated. Overall, we could feel their sincere desire to provide good hospitality. I also understand that covering everything with a limited number of staff is difficult. If we have another chance to stay again in future, I hope these points will have improved—so I wrote them here in detail.

The meals were very delicious. We were able to dine by the window with a panoramic view of Nara while enjoying the sunset. Breakfast was also Japanese rather than a buffet, which was a system I really appreciated.

I was able to relax and unwind.
The bath was not an Onsen, but there was a large public bath and private reservable baths, which was great. The meals were delicious with a good variety to enjoy. The staff were all very kind, and we had a comfortable stay. We would like to come again.

Somewhat satisfied.
This was my second stay in Nara. About 3–4 years ago, I stayed at Fufu Nara, and this time the three of us—my spouse, my sister, and I—stayed at ANDO Hotel Wakakusayama. The staff member who called the day before our stay was warm and kind. After dinner, we also took the Hotel’s microbus to see fireflies and enjoy the night view with guidance from the staff. Thank you very much.

A Trip with My Mother
We were more than satisfied for the price, and both the meals and the Room were excellent. However, because my mother is elderly, she said the stairs to the Room were difficult—but it will remain a fond memory. We are grateful for this wonderful Accommodation. Thank you very much.

The food is of the highest quality.
As always, I truly enjoy both dinner and breakfast. Although I live in Nara, I often stay at your Hotel because I want to enjoy your meals. The spectacular view overlooking the Nara Basin, along with the private open-air bath enjoyed while taking in that scenery, offers a wonderful sense of openness. I am always impressed by the head chef’s dedication and spirit of exploration. It is clear that there is no compromise in anything—from the choice of ingredients and seasoning to even the presentation on each plate. I have been staying here since you first opened six years ago, and I am satisfied every time. I will definitely visit again. The only disappointing point is that, despite such careful attention to every aspect of cooking, the rice at breakfast (perhaps Nara-grown Koshihikari?) always seems slightly crushed grain by grain (broken grains?). Since it is such a fine ingredient, with a bit more refinement in how it is cooked, wouldn’t it bring out even more firmness and sweetness in each grain?

It was a wonderful Hotel filled with warm hospitality!
We stayed here to celebrate my father’s 77th birthday. Thanks to the thoughtful care of all the staff, we were able to have a wonderful celebration, and we are truly grateful. The view from our Room was amazing, and we also enjoyed the sunset. The view from the private open-air bath was also stunning, and it made us feel relaxed and at peace. At dinner, they added a message to our dessert, took photos for us, and even hung a teru-teru-bozu charm on our Room door—thank you for such warm hospitality. The night view & stargazing tour was fun as well! Also, there were various games on each table in the lobby that didn’t detract from the interior design, and we enjoyed them with our children. Each member of the staff greeted us with a smile and genuine hospitality—it was a wonderful Hotel. Thanks to you all, my father was delighted, and it became a memorable stay.

ANDO & ANDO
ANDO Hotel? Hearing that, as a couple whose surname is also spelled ANDO, we simply had to stay here! On top of that, we loved that it’s a relatively small Hotel with just 21 Rooms, set in quiet greenery, so we stayed for three nights. Unlike a large Hotel, the staff were very friendly and would chat with us—and they even remembered our faces. When the forecast said it would rain the next day, there was even a handmade teru-teru bozu charm hanging on our door. It was such a thoughtful touch with a bit of humor, and it really warmed our hearts. What impressed us most was the shampoo and toiletries in the bathroom: each had a handmade label in large letters so you could read them without glasses. Bathrooms are dimly lit and you can’t exactly wear glasses in there, so wherever we stay we usually struggle to tell which bottle is shampoo and which is conditioner—this made things so much easier. The only disappointment was that breakfast starts too late. We value a routine of eating regularly every six hours—at 6:00, 12:00, and 18:00—so this was a bit tough for us.

Wanting to see the c...
Wanting to see the cherry blossoms on Mt. Yoshino for my birthday, I was looking for a place to stay in Nara and chose this Hotel for a two-night stay because I was drawn to the sea urchin broth shabu-shabu menu. At check-in, we were asked in great detail about breakfast and dinner, the open-air bath, the next morning’s Shuttle Service bus time to the station, and—since it was a Multiple Night Stay—Room cleaning details and amenities. It felt almost like filling out a medical questionnaire. We requested the tour that shows you the night view and starry sky starting at 21:00 after dinner, but dinner service took quite a long time and toward the end we were hurried along as if we might not make it, which was disappointing. Partway through we were told it would depart at 21:15 instead, so we could take our time. The meal itself was wonderful, so I would have appreciated being informed earlier. Also, my birthday was on the first night, but it wasn’t the menu I had been looking forward to; when I asked, I was told it would be prepared on the second night. I had also written questions about menus for a Multiple Night Stay on IKYU’s Reservation site, but received no reply. In the end I resent an inquiry email myself and only received a brief note saying it would be different from the first night. It seems there were many guests on the first night; however, while staff at a neighboring table gave detailed explanations of each dish, our table may have been served by someone new—when we asked what was on top of the bonito dish, they replied something like “nuts… maybe.” When we tried it there were pine nuts as well as roasted garlic with a wonderful aroma. The concept of enjoying changes in flavor—with beautiful tableware and presentation—is excellent overall, yet something still left us feeling slightly disappointed. On the second morning, breakfast came with an English menu and then differed from what was listed; staff removed items saying “This is different,” and there was also no amenity replacement for our Multiple Night Stay until we requested it ourselves. Around 22:15 on our second night we went to get marshmallows; although laughter could be heard from behind reception at the front desk area (in back), the fireplace fire was nearly out so we couldn’t toast them. Since I was alone I didn’t say anything at that moment, but as this is offered until 23:00 it was disappointing. The night view/star tour and some of the staff members we spoke with directly left us with a very positive impression. I hope all staff will be able to provide every guest with equally consistent hospitality.

Exceeded expectations
The spectacular view from the Room was just like in the photos, and we were equally satisfied enjoying it from the private open-air bath. Although it had rained during the day, it stopped by evening for the night-view tour, and we were lucky enough to see a starry sky as well. The meals were not extravagant, but each dish was delicious, and the value for money exceeded our expectations. All of the staff seemed quite young, so at times they felt a little awkward, but everyone worked very hard, which left us with a positive impression and high hopes for their future growth. It would have been even better if alcoholic drinks had been added to the free-flow non-alcoholic beverages available in the lobby.

Perfect for Cherry Blossom Viewing
During cherry blossom season, Rooms can sometimes be fully booked, so I made a Reservation early. This year, I was glad to visit right when the blossoms were in full bloom. If you are hoping for a great view from your Room, we recommend choosing the Premier View category or higher.

I was able to spend a relaxing time.
I loved the experience of staying halfway up Mt. Wakakusa, and this was my second stay. I was able to spend a truly relaxing time. I think this is an auberge where you can enjoy ingredients from Nara. The carefully prepared dinner is exceptional, and with advice from the experienced sommelier, you may find yourself enjoying more drinks than planned. All baths are always kept clean. The in-Room bath, indoor bath, and private panoramic open-air bath all provide high-quality shampoo, conditioner, and other amenities in full-size bottles. What I especially recommend: - Soaking in the complimentary private panoramic open-air bath while taking in sweeping views of the cityscape of Nara - The complimentary “New Japan’s Three Greatest Night Views” and stargazing tour (you might even see deer) This is a Hotel I hope to stay at again.

Our young staff work hard.
I stayed for three nights. I was able to stay during the peak cherry blossom season and had a very comfortable time. As someone with a sweet tooth who doesn’t drink alcohol, I would have been even happier if there had been welcome sweets and a wider variety of desserts. There was a great selection of alcoholic drinks, so I think this Hotel would be especially enjoyable for guests who drink. The daily schedule sheet provided each day was very helpful for someone forgetful like me. I’m sure the younger staff are coming up with all kinds of thoughtful ideas. Please keep up the great work, and thank you very much.

Disappointed with the view from the Room
Room for 2 guests in the 69,000-yen range The hallway leading to the guest Rooms on the 3rd floor was dark, and the view from the Room window was completely different from what we had imagined, which was disappointing. The meals were served with large dishes and some presentation, but there were many fruit-based accents. The “main” dish—the beef shabu-shabu in sea urchin soup—had meat that was very tough and dry. There was a wide selection of alcoholic drinks available, but the pricing was considerably higher than at other Hotels and Ryokan. The best part was that the view from the dining area felt the most pleasant.

It feels like many staff members can only handle situations that are covered in the manual.
The staff were gentle and polite, but it was very disappointing that they often gave unclear answers or said they didn’t know to common questions such as “recommended sightseeing spots” or “the phone number for the front desk.” This was not the case with all staff, but it felt more frequent than at other Accommodations. The food seemed carefully prepared, but I didn’t feel it stood out compared with others. The building and guest rooms were clean, the air conditioning worked well, and the Facilities were excellent.

Enjoy Your Stay in the Penthouse
We stayed in a detached cottage at the end of February, and this time an opening came up in the penthouse—usually very hard to get a Reservation—so three generations of our family stayed together. First of all, the view from the penthouse was breathtaking. The night scenery was especially stunning, and on the spacious balcony we enjoyed roasting marshmallows while taking in the scent of firewood and watching the flickering flames. Being able to gaze at the starry sky was wonderful as well. The Room also has a private open-air bath, so we could soak as many times as we liked without worrying about time. We were also impressed by the food. It had a completely different concept from February’s menu. Since we had shabu-shabu last time, we changed to Yamato beef baked in a salt crust this time. The meat was tender and delicious with the sauce. We also tried splitting firewood and, after check-out, joined a deer painting experience—our grandchild loved it. We were able to make so many wonderful memories. Thank you very much to all the staff members.

Morning walks to Todai-ji Temple are not available.
It was a very good Hotel. It’s a renovated Hotel, and the renovation has been done very well. The views and the staff’s hospitality were both excellent. However, the road leading to the Hotel is a toll road for cars only, so you cannot access it on foot or by bicycle. I wanted to take a morning walk to Todaiji Temple, but had to give up. If you don’t have a car, there is a shuttle bus for getting to and from the Hotel, but for anything else you’ll need taxis—please be aware. The open-air bath was very pleasant, but since there is no cover at all (which is why the view is great), I felt a bit uncomfortable during daylight hours. The staff were truly wonderful, including at the front desk and during breakfast service. The art inside the Hotel was also great.

It will be improved.
I was told that reviews with too few stars may not be posted, so I gave 4 stars. On IKYU there are only good Reviews, but elsewhere… If it isn’t posted… Other than the welcome sweets and the view upon arrival at the Hotel, there was little that felt positive. We were invited to join the water-drawing tour and use a private open-air bath, so we participated. Because dinner was after the tour, it started at 8:00 p.m. Our drink order never arrived, and even water didn’t come. When we asked for at least some water, it was brought over in an irritated manner and placed down abruptly. When food finally started coming out, we were told “service is until 9:00 p.m.” Dishes were then brought out one after another in a rush; even so, not all dishes were served by 9:00 p.m. The taste was not good either—more about appearance than quality. The private open-air bath had lukewarm water and the changing area was cold, so we didn’t use it and went to the public bath instead. The changing area and bathing area there were also cold, so we couldn’t relax. Other guests mentioned the same. Although this was priced as a stay for three people, there were only two beds, and an extra fee was charged for futon bedding. The futon wasn’t set up in an inner area either—it was placed where people walk. At another Hotel we stayed at the next day (also with one futon), there was no extra charge and it was set up properly in an inner space. At checkout I submitted a questionnaire and spoke with staff; they said they would improve going forward. What I received as an apology seemed to be the coffee and tea that had probably already been in our Room. I recommend visiting only after improvements have been made. There are other good Hotels and places to eat in Nara as well.

The view from the Room is stunning.
A renovated older Hotel that feels cozy and welcoming. The building is old and some parts of the Room still show their age, but the meals and service are attentive. What I especially enjoyed was watching the Omizutori ceremony at Nigatsudo. They called several times to encourage me to join, so I went almost on a whim, but it turned out to be a rare and valuable experience. They provided Shuttle Service by bus to the site, and it seems they also offer a stargazing tour in other seasons. I think it’s an excellent service. Dinner was creative with many dishes. Breakfast was not a buffet; instead, it was a Japanese set meal served in a large box. I could eat calmly while enjoying the view from the restaurant. There were many young female staff members; service varies by person, but overall they were polite and attentive. Next time, I’d like to stay during the season when the stargazing tour is available.

A Healing Accommodation Surrounded by Nature
We stayed as three generations with our 4-year-old grandchild. After check-in, we enjoyed the firewood-splitting experience, and it was great that we were guided to reserve the private scenic open-air bath at the time of our Reservation. Getting from our Room to the main building required climbing stairs or an uphill path, which was a bit tough for the grandparents, but we met deer from Mt. Wakakusa along the way and our grandchild was thrilled. The meals were wonderful—not only delicious, but also thoughtfully presented with appealing aromas. We truly enjoyed local Nara ingredients, including Yamato vegetables. At night, we joined a stargazing tour at the summit of Mt. Wakakusa. Unfortunately it was cloudy and we couldn’t see the stars, but the night view—known as one of Japan’s New Three Great Night Views—is a must-see. A staff member took photos for us, making it a great memory. Roasting marshmallows by the fireplace and relaxing to the flickering flames and crackling firewood was very soothing. This is an Accommodation we’d love to visit again as each season changes.

A Disappointing Trip
Because I value the dining experience, I always request guaranteed window-side seats with a good view for both dinner and breakfast. When I applied via IKYU, I also wrote this in the comments section and added, “Please be sure to respond.” Since I did not receive any reply from the Hotel, I called and was told, “We cannot guarantee it.” So I said, “I’m making an unreasonable request, so I booked a higher-priced Room. If it’s still not possible, I will Cancel the Reservation.” Then I was told, “Since you reserved a higher-grade Room, we will properly arrange it.” To be safe, I asked for an email reply and received an email stating: “We will prepare window-side seats for both dinner and breakfast on both days.” At check-in, I asked again about the dining seats and was told that window-side seats would be arranged for both dinner and breakfast on both days. Dinner on the first night was indeed at a window-side seat. However, at breakfast on the first morning, we were guided to a seat that was not by the window. I explained that this had been guaranteed in advance, but nothing was done. With no other choice, I said we would come back later and informed the female manager at the front desk that they were not honoring the guaranteed seating arrangement. The female manager did not offer any apology. Afterward, my companion told me she had asked the female manager to call us when a window-side seat became available. Even after nearly 30 minutes back in our Room there was no contact; by then breakfast hours had passed. So I called the front desk and told the female manager: “You confirmed that I received an email guaranteeing this arrangement. Because your response has been far from sincere, we have decided to cancel after one night. Please refund us for the second night’s stay as well as for breakfast on the first morning. Also please come to collect our luggage close to checkout time.” The female manager only said she had “confirmed” it and again offered no apology at all. The same female manager came to collect our luggage; when I asked whether there would be any apology whatsoever, she only said “I’m sorry,” without anything further. For me and my companion—given how this Hotel is promoted as having beautiful night views—we were truly looking forward to our stay there including our dining experience. To put it bluntly regarding seating arrangements for meals, we feel deceived. In addition, we were deeply shocked by what felt like an indifferent response from the female manager throughout this situation.
