    Iwate Hanamaki. A traditional ryokan along the clear stream of Toyosawa River. Experience the unique standing bath with a depth of approximately 125cm, where natural hot spring water rises directly from the bottom of the tub. Fujisan Ryokan consists of a main building and an annex. This stay will be in the reinforced concrete annex on a weekday, with access to the baths in the main building from there. From parking your car, you will receive warm hospitality leading seamlessly to check-in. The front desk at the annex serves as a lobby for guests, offering complimentary drinks until 6 PM. The room features a monochrome design and excellent internet connectivity. Located on the third floor along the river, it offers serene views of flowing water and springtime scenery that truly evoke a sense of being in Tohoku. Enjoy an indoor private bath attached to your room with natural hot spring water flowing directly from its source. Dinner is served at the first-floor restaurant, featuring seasonal mountain delicacies such as wild vegetables and mushrooms, locally grown low-pesticide produce and rice from Hanamaki, as well as fresh seafood delivered from Sanriku.     Repeat visit

    Visited in August 2023 via direct reservation, but due to the summer heat and fatigue from walking around Chusonji Temple, I had no clear memories or records of the trip. This prompted me to revisit. The shuttle bus journey from Shin-Hanamaki Station to the facility was lined with fully bloomed cherry blossoms, magnolias, and kobushi flowers. While there were no cherry blossoms during this "13th month" visit, the river's dynamic flow provided a refreshing view. The guest room amenities and private onsen were spacious and well-maintained with no complaints about cleanliness. Both dinner and breakfast were satisfying in terms of quality and quantity. Overall, it was a fulfilling experience during this "13th month." However, why did it fail to leave a lasting impression? Perhaps it lacked a sense of extraordinary uniqueness. Memorable experiences often stem from either dissatisfaction overshadowed by something remarkable or an impactful highlight—neither of which stood out here. Despite not being in an affordable price range, I felt it needed more impact. Although I didn’t declare any special occasion due to its hassle, if birthdates are requested at check-in along with address details, acknowledging birthdays would have been appreciated. Additionally, is there no prior research into repeat guests' history? While there were absolutely no complaints about my stay overall—it’s unlikely I'll return for a third visit.

    It was my first stay in about three years. I was looking forward to the meals, but the main dish for dinner was pork lava steam, and the pork was dry with no flavor at all. The appetizer included a small portion of sashimi—since when is sashimi considered an appetizer? The grilled dish, silver salmon saikyo-yaki, lacked flavor as well. There was no sense of seasonality in any of the dishes, which was disappointing! There were no fried items either; even the soup lacked taste and was lukewarm—very disappointing. Overall, it felt like a very small portion for dinner. As for breakfast, it consisted of canned sardines and pre-made side dishes. The hittsumi soup? Absolutely unacceptable! It seemed like someone who has never tasted authentic local hittsumi made it. Hittsumi should be smooth and slippery in texture; this one was sticky and crumbly—not hittsumi at all! The burdock root and carrots appeared to be frozen ingredients with no flavor whatsoever. Even the chicken meat felt dry! I wish there had been more local flavors and seasonal touches to the meals so that we could fully appreciate the chef's skills. Appetizers are supposed to set expectations for what’s coming next in a meal—but both dinner and breakfast left me disappointed. Regarding our room: while cleaning itself seemed thorough, I noticed peeling wallpaper on the ceiling as well as mold or some kind of dirt on our bathroom walls—it left me feeling let down. Thank you for providing a dessert plate for my birthday—that gesture is appreciated. However overall expectations were high given rising prices; unfortunately everything fell short this time around which made things quite disappointing. I hope these comments can serve useful feedback moving forward!

    The Onsen is excellent.

    The room and the main Onsen are wonderful. Although there are few side dishes in the morning that go well with rice, which is a bit disappointing, the portion size is just right, and the rice is delicious. The dining chairs are hard, which is unfortunate. It would be nice to have fresh juice from the previous day available in the lounge in the morning.

    Exceptional Hospitality and Dining

    From check-in, the guidance was very courteous and made for a comfortable stay. The Room was lovely, with a private open-air bath offering abundant hot water and stunning views! I fully enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. The much-anticipated dinner featured a wide variety of delicious dishes, with the roast beef being so good that I wanted seconds. The original cocktails were also excellent. I look forward to visiting again.

    Relax and Unwind at Jusan-Gatsu

    A truly fulfilling accommodation that touches the heart. The dishes, carefully crafted with seasonal ingredients, were like works of art in both appearance and taste. Every bite was a delightful experience. The most memorable was the lava-steamed dinner. The meat was incredibly tender, and the vegetables were packed with sweetness, showcasing the quality of the ingredients directly. The steaming process made everything perfectly fluffy and absolutely delicious. In the room's bath, I enjoyed a luxurious moment surrounded by tranquility, feeling time flow slowly. Above all, the warm yet subtle attentiveness of the staff was truly exceptional. Their hospitality could be felt in every detail and provided constant comfort throughout my stay. This is an accommodation I want to cherish and revisit without fail!

    I had been wanting to visit Jusan-Gatsu for a long time. The modern architecture and interior, as well as the dining area, pleasantly break the traditional image of an Onsen Ryokan. The warm hospitality from the staff, including the hostess, was also delightful. I will visit again.

    We enjoyed a luxurious time.

    I made a reservation at this Ryokan for the onsen, but I also enjoyed the delicious cuisine, stunning scenery, and lovely room. This time was a solo trip, but next time I would like to visit with my partner during the fresh green season. Thank you in advance for your hospitality again.

    A luxurious experience to enjoy two Ryokans in one day

    It felt very rewarding to enjoy the two facilities, the traditional Fujisan Ryokan and the modern Jusan-gatsu. For a full Onsen experience, Fujisan Ryokan is perfect, while Jusan-gatsu offers a luxurious and extraordinary stay, both of which were highly satisfying. The view from the room was also stunning, making me want to visit in every season. I will make an effort to return again.

    A property with excellent customer service from the guest's perspective.

    The Onsen with a natural hot spring without added water is rare. By chance, snow had accumulated, and I was able to enjoy the open-air bath with a view of the snow. The staff's hospitality is excellent. The Room cleaning is thorough to every corner. However, I was concerned about the dirt on the shelves and baskets in the changing room of the famous standing bath. Since Jusan Gatsu (Jusan Gatsu) is still new, it provides a pleasant stay. As for meals, if more of the chef's unique characteristics were showcased, it would enhance its excellence even further. I would like to visit again in a different season. I'm looking forward to it.

    The Onsen was wonderful!

    I enjoyed the many onsens at Fujisan Ryokan (Main Building). Each bath has excellent onsen water quality. The atmosphere of each is charming and enjoyable. It is truly a valuable onsen ryokan. The ambiance of Fujisan Ryokan was also lovely (though I stayed at the separate villa, Kokoro no Toki). By opening the connecting door, you can immediately access the main building, and I went back and forth in my yukata several times. The room's open-air onsen bath was spacious and quite nice, but this is a ryokan where you should definitely enjoy the main building's onsen. Meals were served with many small dishes offering a variety of flavors to enjoy. I rated it three stars because while it was fun and delicious, I had imagined more luxurious ryokan-style meals rather than somewhat homely cooking... but it was still very satisfying. The staff were young, kind, courteous, and made for a recommended ryokan experience. Thank you very much.

    A nostalgic yet new healing Onsen

    Stayed in December. The property is new and clean. The room's open-air bath was spacious and relaxing. The meal, featuring steamed mountain crab, was very delicious. Most of the staff were foreigners, but they seemed to have studied well not only Japanese but also about the cuisine. They had smiles and were as pleasant as Japanese staff. Katsura no Yu in the main building was soothing with the sound of the river, leaving my skin smooth. I enjoyed the ancient onsen atmosphere at Shiroen no Yu (Shiroen no Yu). I would love to visit again.

    Unfortunately!

    This property is my favorite, and I have stayed here many times. This time, I stayed at this property for my birthday. The guide seemed to be in training, and although their earnestness was conveyed, they spoke too quickly for me to understand what they were saying. During dinner as well, the explanation of the dishes was too fast and quiet to comprehend. While I'm sure they are being properly trained, I felt that a bit more training might be necessary before presenting in front of guests. I was looking forward to the meal as well, but the pork from the Sangen pork lava steam dish was dry and disappointing compared to when I last stayed here and enjoyed delicious beef. As for breakfast, with items like sardines, okara (soy pulp), and hittsumi (a type of dumpling), it did not seem fitting for a high-end property breakfast. It was very disappointing. The onsen is excellent; I've brought friends along and used it many times because it's my favorite property where I'm always very satisfied. Therefore, I hope they maintain their sense of luxury.

    Exceeded expectations, would like to visit again.

    In winter, it was a bit far for a car trip, but I fell in love with it at first sight through the site's introduction. Although the modern Western-style room may lack the charm of an onsen property, I enjoyed the view from the spacious room bath with free-flowing hot spring water and the historic main building's onsen. Above all, the foreign staff's service was excellent; they were attentive to details such as always arranging things conveniently for my left-handed companion during meals. The cuisine was diverse and elegantly seasoned, which we finished without leaving anything behind; however, it would be even better if there were a course with fewer dishes for those who eat less. This time we stayed only one night, but I would love to enjoy two or more nights next time.

    Satisfied with Onsen and meals

    This was our first time at Lead Onsen. We felt that the temperature and the water of the Onsen suited our skin very well. We also really liked the Onsen in the room. In addition to the wonderful bath, the meals made with seafood, mountain delicacies, and seasonal vegetables were all very delicious. Moreover, the landlady greeted us every night at dinner, which conveyed a great sense of hospitality. I would like to recommend this Ryokan to my friends. When the lid of the pot was removed, the staff was surprised by the red and white mochi in the ozoni. It was a bit disappointing for me, a mochi lover, that the red and white mochi had melted due to the heat. Even with that, the meals, Onsen, and satisfaction level are a perfect 5 out of 5. It is a very good Onsen Ryokan. Thank you to all the staff.

    Very nice Onsen

    The staff member who assisted us was from Nepal, which made it a bit difficult to ask questions during the room explanation. We were told, "If the water temperature is low, please contact the front desk." Since it wasn't a free-flowing system, I found it inconvenient to have to contact the front desk each time, so I asked for a slightly hotter temperature. However, it remained hot every time I entered... Upon closer inspection, bubbles were rising from a small hole in the back, and it seemed that the water was being supplied at a set temperature 24 hours a day. I should have confirmed with the Japanese staff... The meals were very delicious, and the foreign staff made a great effort to explain in Japanese. Since the next day was my birthday, they wrote a message on the dessert plate, which was very touching. There was a moment when the Nepalese staff member was not present, and it seems the message was written during that time. The explanation of Japanese cuisine was quite difficult, so there were parts that were hard to understand, but their manners were impeccable. The dessert pudding was incredibly delicious, even when I was full. The Onsen had many mixed bathing hours, and there were 1-2 hours for women only, but during those times, there was no staff at the entrance, and when the door was opened, the changing room at the bottom of the stairs was visible, so I decided against using the Shirazaru no Yu. However, the bath in the room with a view of the snowy landscape was superb. On the way back, I planned to return by city bus instead of the shuttle service, so I enjoyed my stay until the last minute. Since the path from the hotel to the bus stop was quite an uphill climb, I thought it would be difficult to carry my suitcase, but the front desk staff kindly offered, "I'm sorry, but we can drive you to the bus stop," which was very much appreciated. It turned out to be a very nice birthday trip. Thank you very much.

    As I mentioned before, if the women's private bath starts at 3 PM, shouldn't the bath mats be replaced and a quick cleaning done to check for fallen hair? It's really disappointing. I'm happy with the drink service, but it would be perfect if there were some small snacks like nuts. Other Ryokan are also doing their best. I support the employment of foreigners. Even if they don't speak Japanese, their earnest hospitality was great. The most senior person? Please check your appearance. Your hair is messy and your mask is worn below the nose. It gives an unclean impression and is not good.

    It was exquisite.

    I stayed in December. The Room, Onsen, and meals were excellent, but we were most impressed by the service. The staff consisted of many foreign nationals, but from the welcome to the farewell, they paid attention to every detail in many situations, which moved us. We did not have a single unpleasant experience and were able to stay with peace of mind. It became one of the best memories of my life. I am grateful.

    The Onsen was wonderful and the autumn leaves were beautiful.

    I visited in June and had a great time, so I returned after five months with my parents. I used the room alone, so I enjoyed a very comfortable Onsen experience. I highly recommend it for solo travelers. The food seemed better last time, but the single room plan included horsehair crab and abalone, and the horsehair crab was very delicious. I also really liked the bitterness of the caramel in the dessert pudding. The staff responded to various requests and were very considerate during meals, thank you very much. However, as expected, the response from the elderly was that while the Onsen was excellent, the room was not relaxing. I took the Shinkansen to Shin-Hanamaki and then a taxi round trip, but only the Yamabiko stops at Shin-Hanamaki Station, and there is nothing at the station. On the way back, there were some unexpected events like the Shinkansen being delayed or stopped, making it a tough trip, but the autumn leaves were beautiful. The Onsen is wonderful, and the bath in the room is excellent, so I wonder if it's too much to ask for a slightly more relaxing room.

    The foreign STAFF was trying hard, but they spoke too fast and were difficult to understand. It would be nice to have explanations about the Onsen and the surrounding area. It was also unclear whether we could have a second serving of rice, as there was no explanation. One of the STAFF had a strange smell, possibly body odor, which was concerning. There was also someone who smelled of cigarettes, which was questionable. It's a pity that the amenities are laminated. It was clean, and the Onsen was good.

    I was amazed by the incredible contrast between the Fujisan Ryokan, which feels like a time slip back to the Showa or even Taisho era, and the ultra-modern Jusan-gatsu. Both were wonderful in their own ways. The Shirasaru no Yu is a deep standing bath with a truly nice atmosphere. The Onsen in the room was also spacious and luxurious. The dining area was very stylish, and the food was delicious. We indulged in a feeling of luxury. For us in our 70s, it was much more comfortable than a flashy tourist spot, especially with a close friend. The Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Museum near the new Hanamaki Station was well worth the visit. The Shirogane pork tonkatsu at Yamaneko-kan was delicious.

    The hot spring and meals are wonderful.

    We enjoyed a wide variety of delicious dishes, and the dessert pudding was exquisite. The quality of the hot water was excellent and very soothing. We were very satisfied with the free-flowing drinks in the elegant room accompanied by jazzy music. The only downside was that we couldn't control the air conditioning, and it felt hot. When we opened the window, the sound of the stream made it difficult to fall asleep. I hope guests can adjust the temperature and indoor climate themselves. Everything else was perfect, and I was tempted to invite my fishing enthusiast friends. However, I would like to know when and how stream fishing is available from this Hotel.

    It was a very comfortable trip.

    It is a private bath with natural Onsen available 24 hours, so you can enter at any time. It is comfortable, not too hot or too lukewarm, but somehow it kept my body warm for a long time. I enjoyed a course of Japanese cuisine that made use of local ingredients from Iwate Prefecture. It was delicious. The hotel staff's response was kind and courteous, which impressed me. The room's coffee and other amenities were excellent in service. I was also pleased with the complimentary bite-sized chocolates. It is a comfortable hotel that I would like to visit again if I have the opportunity.

    Room and service

    The Room is spacious, but it felt like a larger studio apartment with trompe-l'oeil wallpaper. I understand that the staff is trying their best, but since most of them are foreigners, there were times when they couldn't understand Japanese. It didn't have a luxurious feel.

    Solo trip, second visit

    I liked the onsen water here, so this is my second visit. The bath in the room is also filled with the same water, making my skin smooth. The attentiveness of the staff in charge of the guest room was comforting for a solo traveler, and I was truly healed. The only disappointment was the poor drainage in the shower room attached to the room, so I rated the facility 4 stars. I saw reviews mentioning that the room was dark, but I think this level of darkness is good as it allows me to escape from the usual hustle and bustle. I will visit again when I am tired from work.

    The room is very spa...

    The room is very spacious, modern and comfortable. The staff are very helpful and efficient. Dinner menu is very good, appetizer is amazing, presentation is so nice, steamed hairy crab is extremely fresh and the dessert is super yummy.
