Savor the nostalgic Namari Onsen and the blessings of Iwate.
I had visited Namari Onsen as a child, and this time I stayed again after many years—it brought back wonderful memories. What impressed me most was the Onsen. The water felt silky and gently clung to my skin, and it reminded me just how special Namari Onsen is. Many of the staff were from overseas, but everyone served guests with great care and dedication, which left a very positive impression. Breakfast was also unforgettable—especially the tomato juice and yogurt, which were outstanding. They were so delicious that I later had the tomato juice shipped to me. The rice was excellent as well, and I could really feel that local Iwate ingredients were thoughtfully selected throughout the meal. On the other hand, the guest room design was quite modern, which felt a little less relaxing for me. Since Namari Onsen has such a long history, I think a more “Japanese-modern” style might better match the charm of the area and its Onsen culture. Overall, it was a wonderful stay where I could fully enjoy both the nostalgic waters of Namari Onsen and the incredible food of Iwate.

The Onsen is wonderfully deep and relaxing.
The clean, new guest Rooms were wonderful, and the in-Room Onsen—100% free-flowing from the source with no recirculation—was also excellent. The especially outstanding part was the deeply retro, Showa-era Onsen you enter after moving to the Ryokan section. Some baths have fairly steep stairs and a step down to the bottom of the tub, so guests with weaker legs or hips should take care. There is also women-only time slots, which my wife enjoyed. All staff members, including those from overseas, worked very hard and were kind and courteous. It was great to experience both a new, stylish modern Hotel and a Ryokan section full of Showa nostalgia in a single trip.

The Room is nicely appointed and has a clean atmosphere, but...
Unfortunately, I can’t say the Room was cleaned thoroughly, and the modern atmosphere wasn’t really brought out. There was a malfunction in the toilet (shower area), and during use throughout my stay, an unpleasant high-pitched mechanical noise kept sounding. I reported it at check-out. As for service, it’s not even a matter of “hospitality.” If you assign foreign staff to the front desk or dining service, please ensure they have solid Japanese first. At minimum, they should be able to deliver standard scripted phrases clearly enough for guests to hear and understand. It makes guests feel like they have to be considerate. The food is at a very high level. Among higher-grade Onsen Hotels and Ryokan, I’d say it’s top-tier. If you choose the steamed seafood course, it’s reasonable to have high expectations. The only downsides were that the portions were a bit large, and my dinner request in advance (no green onions or herbs) was not reflected—though it was reflected at breakfast—which again comes down to service/hospitality. I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it to others, but if you can overlook these issues, you may be fine with it. The Onsen water quality and the food are outstanding.

If possible, I would have liked a Multiple Night Stay.
Located near the final stop of the free shuttle bus from Shin-Hanamaki Station. The Room and the semi-open-air bath attached to the Room (almost an indoor bath) were excellent. The shampoo and other toiletries were my favorite THANN products from Thailand and had a wonderful fragrance. Amenities were also well stocked. The only disappointment was that I could not use the large public bath unless I went to Fujisan Ryokan, and the water temperature was quite hot, so I almost felt overheated. Both dinner and breakfast were just the right amount—not too much or too little—and a delicious mix of Japanese and Western dishes. The staff were pleasant and kind, and if possible, I would have liked a Multiple Night Stay so I could relax and enjoy the perfectly warm in-room bath again and again.

We enjoyed a peaceful stay along with a wonderful Onsen.
I booked a two-night stay in search of high-quality Onsen and a quiet setting, and it exceeded my expectations. You can also use the four Onsen baths at Fujisan Ryokan, so including the semi-open-air bath in the Room, I enjoyed five different baths in total—pure Onsen bliss. I was able to enjoy free-flowing hot spring water as if it were the norm, but looking back on other onsen Hotels and Ryokans I’ve stayed at, that “normal” here is truly exceptional. Since it was a weekday, about half the time I had the baths almost entirely to myself. The meals were very good in variety, portion size, and quality, with many local ingredients used. Personally, since this was a Multiple Night Stay, I would have preferred something a bit more standard rather than an especially lavish style—but not enough to reduce my rating. As for the guest Room amenities and Facility features/equipment, tastes may vary. Functionally everything was sufficient. The bath in the Room—especially considering convenience—was what I appreciated most overall. Regarding service and hospitality: there were no issues with any staff member. It’s true there are many international staff members, but communication was almost never a problem, and hospitality felt consistently thorough regardless of nationality. The only reason I reduced my rating is that (without going into details) there was an inconsiderate guest using the Onsen that made part of the experience unpleasant. The baths—including Shirozaru-no-Yu—are all so photogenic that you’ll want to capture them on camera; and since the Ryokan itself has wonderful historic character in both its building and Rooms as well, it might even be worth offering scheduled indoor photography tours during set time slots. Overall satisfaction with this Accommodation is extremely high. Thank you for providing such a peaceful getaway.

We were able to use ...
We were able to use the baths at Fujisan Ryokan, and our Room on the 13th floor was modern and comfortable. The food was truly excellent. Among the indoor baths, the standing-bath design has a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere—very much like a traditional hot-spring cure bath—and it’s wonderful. It’s quite far from Tokyo, but if you love Onsen, it’s absolutely worth the trip! There are many international staff members, and every one of them is fantastic. I’m grateful for how they help support Japan’s Ryokan industry amid staffing shortages.

The foreign staff were working hard and did their best.
All the staff at the annex were foreigners, but they provided attentive service. The meals and service were prompt, and they were very considerate. The only drawback was that the floor of the open-air bath was slippery, and my wife—who has a disability—fell. I assume it can’t be helped because of the spring water quality that makes it slippery. If we have another chance, we would like to visit again.....

The hot spring is wonderful.
The Hakuen-no-Yu hot spring was excellent. Next time, I plan to stay in the Ryokan section.

We had a very satisfying stay.
The room was spacious, spotlessly cleaned, and very comfortable, with a large bed that made it a truly relaxing stay. The meals used high-quality ingredients and were carefully prepared; everything was delicious, the portions were just right, and we were very satisfied. The in-room semi-open-air bath was also very spacious, and we enjoyed it comfortably. A couple of minor disappointments: since the baths are fed directly from the hot spring source (free-flowing), some wall areas had dark staining due to humidity, and we could only understand about half of what the non-Japanese staff member said in Japanese.

Japanese-Modern Room and Cuisine
The Room was very clean, and the two of us were able to relax and spend time at ease. The private bath in the Room was also perfect for a leisurely soak. The large public bath was the women’s bath called Katsura, but it felt small because it was shared with guests from the main building. The meals used plenty of local ingredients, and each dish was deliciously seasoned. For those of us from Kansai, it felt a little salty, but overall the flavors were very good. The tableware was also lovely. The foreign staff were very polite and attentive, which left a great impression.

The meals were impressive, and the open-air bath was spacious with excellent water quality.
First, the Room’s semi-open-air bath was spacious, and we were able to relax. The meals were very satisfying—seasonal, with just the right amount, gently flavored, and beautifully presented. They provided yukata, pajamas, and even a gown. The bed was very comfortable, there was also a sofa, and the service was extremely attentive, making this a truly satisfying trip. We would love to visit again.

The Onsen was great.
I visited during cherry blossom season because I wanted to try the famous Shirozaru-no-Yu (standing bath). “Jusangatsu” was wonderful in both the baths and the meals. The in-Room bath was especially great—spacious with excellent water quality, and even with the doors fully open, well-maintained screens kept insects out, which was a big relief for someone who doesn’t like bugs. The entire Room was unified in white, impeccably clean, and very comfortable. Thanks to the Diamond member benefit, I was also able to enjoy a long stay and fully indulge in Onsen time. As for amenities, there are no bottled skincare items such as lotion provided in the Room, so if you need them, I recommend bringing your own. It was also fun to have a beer after bathing in the lounge and chat with other guests. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again. Thank you very much for your hospitality. (And special thanks to the young and sincere male staff member who helped me charge my electric vehicle!)

Hot spring therapy with my wife
This Accommodation beautifully blends a traditional hot-spring retreat with modern Facilities. The main building evokes a nostalgic travel atmosphere, and walking along the corridors lets you fully enjoy the feel of an old-style therapeutic hot-spring inn. Another highlight is spending time in the main-building lounge, enjoying complimentary beer or wine while watching the river flow. One of our main purposes for this trip—the Shirozaru-no-Yu bath—was especially memorable, and the other large public baths were also very appealing. The contrast in character between the new building and the main building was fascinating. Both the Room and dining area are modern, so it seems likely to be popular with younger guests as well. The meals were delicious yet gentle on the body, with a sense of refinement. Highly recommended when visiting Chuson-ji Temple. It would be even better if there were women’s amenities provided in the Room.

Ryokan Section and Hot Spring Therapy Section
The property is divided into the Toji Wing and the Ryokan Wing, and the public baths are shared.\nSince Jusangetsu has an open-air bath in the Room, it was very convenient.\nThe meals were stylish as well.\nNote that the front entrance closes at 22:00.

The Onsen is amazing.
The Onsen in the main building and the Room were wonderful. The meals were just the right portion, and we enjoyed them at a relaxed pace. The staff were courteous, and the service was excellent.

Due to a fracture, I was unable to use the large public bath, so I used a room with an open-air bath.
Two years ago, after fracturing my femur, I started using this comfortable Onsen that feels great for the price—something I’d enjoyed since my student days. I finally made it there in December, and the Onsen I had almost given up on was so relaxing that it has become my regular Accommodation for an annual tradition. The kindness and comfort give me energy and motivation. It’s the best place to soothe the soul!

Service at this luxury resort still has room for improvement, but I’m hopeful it will get better.
We stayed for two nights from January 16. Unfortunately, on January 16 the Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, and Tokaido Line were suspended from the morning. We heard the Yokosuka Line was barely running, but when we arrived in Yokohama everything had stopped. Keikyu was restricting entry, so we rushed to Shin-Yokohama and headed to Tokyo by the Tokaido Shinkansen, barely making it in time for the Tohoku Shinkansen—quite a scramble. Kokoro no Toki Jūsan-gatsu feels like an annex of the long-established Ryokan Fujisan Ryokan, aiming more for a luxury resort than a traditional high-end Ryokan. Compared with Fujisan Ryokan, the Room, Onsen, meals, and shared spaces were excellent. However, as other Reviews have mentioned, some staff who are clearly foreign seemed undertrained. With today’s labor shortages it may be unavoidable, but while explanations about meals are fine as-is, explanations about the Room and Facility need to be properly provided. Shirozaru-no-Yu at Fujisan Ryokan was wonderful—the deepest standing bath in Japan—but the staircase down to the bath is long, so I only used it twice. For smokers like me, it was very inconvenient that the only smoking area is in the entrance lobby of Fujisan Ryokan—it’s far away. I would like them to set up a smoking area outside Jūsan-gatsu’s entrance at least. If a smoking area is added there, I would like to visit again.

Revisit
A Stay After a Long Time As soon as I opened the automatic door to Tozansou Ryokan, it felt like a time slip back to the Showa era. Because I can’t adjust the Onsen in the Room myself, it’s a hassle to contact the front desk. Most of the staff are foreigners, but they responded politely in Japanese. The meals were wonderful, along with the tableware. The beef stew baked in pie crust served as an appetizer felt heavy on my stomach, but it was delicious. For breakfast dessert, the bottom of the orange was cut so it would sit steadily—such impressive attention to detail. The Mont Blanc tiramisu at dinner came in a jar, so I brought it back to my Room and ate it with coffee; it wasn’t overly sweet and was delicious. Is there anything that can be done about the bad smell in the parking lot?

Stylish!!
The Rooms and facilities were so stylish that I honestly couldn’t fully relax. The difference compared with the main building was simply too great. That said, the riverside location was wonderful, and the free-flowing Onsen had excellent water quality. The standing bath in particular had an amazing atmosphere and was very comfortable. The in-room bath was also luxurious—spacious enough for three people to bathe side by side. The best part was the dining: not only very fresh, but also a wide variety of dishes with refined seasoning. I’d like to come back just for the food. On the service side, it was disappointing that some of the Nepalese staff explaining things still struggled with Japanese pronunciation, and I couldn’t understand about half of what they said. It felt awkward to keep asking them to repeat themselves, but it seems like more training is needed. Also, I was disappointed that the front desk staff’s attitude felt somewhat overly polite yet rude. Given that this is not an inexpensive stay, I hope to see improvements in service.

The Best Accommodation
The atmosphere of the room was excellent, and the meals were very delicious. Additionally, we enjoyed the contrast between the stylish Room 13 and the retro Shirazaru no Yu at Fujisan Ryokan, allowing us to fully experience an extraordinary stay. The kind and attentive hospitality of the staff and the snowy landscape of Namari Onsen provided a truly relaxing experience.

Accommodation in December
Compared to the charm of the main building as a traditional Ryokan, the concept of the annex felt somewhat mismatched. During our stay in January, the Room was not pre-heated upon arrival and was quite cold. Even after turning on the heater, it took a considerable amount of time to warm up. Additionally, there were no extra futons available. When we called to inquire due to how cold it was at night, we were informed that since all Rooms were fully booked, only thin lap blankets could be provided. The private Onsen in our Room was lukewarm and not free-flowing. When we asked for clarification about this, an explanation from one of the foreign staff members regarding "pipes from below" was difficult to understand clearly. While they seemed earnest in their efforts, it appeared challenging for them to handle nuanced situations or provide detailed responses. The combination of cold temperatures and lukewarm private Onsen made it hard to sleep at night; as a result, I ended up catching a cold and feeling unwell. On a positive note, however, the quality of the Onsen water itself was excellent and truly impressive.

Would love to visit again.
This was my second stay. The temperature of the bath in the room is always perfect, and the room is clean and well-maintained, making for a very comfortable stay. Bathing while listening to the sound of the river was truly relaxing. The staff, though from abroad, are well-trained and their dedication is evident. The meals were delicious with just the right portions, and the accommodation fee is reasonable. A faster bus service from Shin-Hanamaki Station within an hour would make it more convenient for visitors from metropolitan areas. I would love to visit again!

Recommended Accommodation
I finally had the chance to visit the accommodation I had been curious about for a long time. The onsen was simply amazing. Both the atmosphere and the quality of the hot spring water were excellent, and I enjoyed it multiple times. The staff's service was also great, making my stay very comfortable. Although I don't often have opportunities to visit Iwate, I would definitely recommend this place to any friends planning a trip there. Thank you!

This is my second stay because it was excellent.
The room's open-air bath is spacious, with onsen water gently bubbling and always at the perfect temperature. The meals are incredibly delicious, served on beautifully clean plates and glasses in a semi-private and relaxing dining area. The staff, including international members, are impressively polite and well-trained. There is a free shuttle service from the station to the onsen area, so the distance from the station is not an issue. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again and again.

The open-air bath in the Room was amazing!
The entire Hanamaki City was filled with hospitality, making every visit pleasant. Upon arrival, I immediately enjoyed the open-air bath in the room and later indulged in the free-flow at the main building. The sake was delicious. The contrast between the modern new building and the traditional main building was striking. Dinner conveyed a sense of hospitality, offering a variety of thoughtful dishes that allowed me to relax and enjoy wholeheartedly. I wished to enjoy Shirozaru no Yu more, but as the women-only hours were limited, I hoped for longer availability. All staff members were very polite and pleasant. This time I visited with friends, but next time I would love to revisit this accommodation with my spouse.

It is an accommodation with a pleasant atmosphere.
I booked a Plan without checking carefully, but the Room I was guided to was very stylish, with luxurious Facilities and amenities that felt almost too good for an elderly couple like us. The meals seemed to be creative Japanese cuisine, with perfectly balanced flavors and elegant tableware. Most of the staff were from overseas, but their dedicated hospitality left a positive impression. The Onsen facilities were all available, with usage times divided by gender; however, it was slightly difficult to understand the locations of each Onsen and their respective usage times.

The Perfect Blend of Modern and Retro
We stayed at this accommodation during our trip to Iwate to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of moving between the modern annex and the retro main building, savoring the passage of time. The quality of the onsen was among the best we've experienced in all our travels, with a perfect temperature that allowed us to relax while listening to the gentle sound of a flowing river. The room was modern with luxurious facilities, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The retro main building had its own charm, and going back and forth between them was an enjoyable experience. The seamless connection between both buildings felt fresh and added a touch of luxury. The meals were Kyoto-style cuisine made with plenty of local ingredients, each dish carefully prepared and perfectly paired with drinks. The staff included people from various countries who provided exceptional service infused with Japanese hospitality. Achieving such attentive service requires not just training but also shared empathy for hospitality values. Their language skills and demeanor were truly impressive—more than admiration, it left us deeply moved. Although we visited hoping to enjoy autumn foliage under rainy weather as forecasted, miraculously blue skies appeared when we left the accommodation, allowing us to enjoy stunning autumn scenery beyond expectations. Overall, we were extremely satisfied. This is an accommodation we'd love to visit again in different seasons as well as during autumn foliage season!
