A solo getaway to enjoy the snow.
A weekday solo trip on a whim, taking advantage of senior perks and good weather. My goal was Onsen rather than sightseeing. I took local trains at an easy pace from Kanagawa—about 4 hours. About 30 cm of snow had piled up on the roof. With light snowflakes drifting down, I could see Mt. Tanigawa slightly off to the side from the open-air bath. The Accommodation’s Onsen was outstanding: no added water, no heating—100% free-flowing from the source, and even drinkable. The temperature was excellent as well. With so many places calling themselves a “hidden hot spring inn” despite poor maintenance or not being truly free-flowing, I’m glad I found a genuinely great Onsen Accommodation. The Room was spacious, and from the sunken kotatsu—and even from the window—I could see Mt. Tanigawa. Dinner started with a pre-meal drink of “Yukimi Apple Sake,” followed by many creatively prepared dishes using local ingredients—11 items in total, including Joshu beef sukiyaki. Breakfast was just as varied and filling (including miso-braised pork), almost like dinner—I finished everything. At both dinner and breakfast, I could really feel the chef’s passion. One puzzling point: shochu. The menu listed “Imo Shochu – 1 glass: 600 yen.” The glass served was the common type used for shochu with hot water, but it was only about half full. A beer “one mug” is usually served full (mug size aside). In the UK, glasses have pint markings. Since this seems to be the Accommodation’s policy (e.g., 120 ml at a set ratio), complaining to staff would have missed the point—but when you order “one glass,” you naturally expect it to be filled to the top. Maybe seniors are too picky about small things! Still, the hot-water mix itself was just right. The next day brought perfect weather again, so I decided to take the Mt. Tanigawa Ropeway up to Tenjindaira. Most of the skiers were foreigners. I tried scuba diving last year but have never skied; watching everyone glide along so smoothly made me think maybe skiing is next for me. On my way back I considered visiting Doai Station (“Japan’s No.1 mole station”), but apparently its uphill platform is above ground—and going down and back up those 486 steps felt like too much this time—so I’ll save it for next time. Instead, I went straight to Minakami Station. A weekday solo Onsen trip by local trains—my remaining years may be few, but I have plenty of time. Once again, I enjoyed many things this trip as well. Thank you very much.

The food was excellent.
With only a few Rooms, we were able to relax and enjoy a peaceful stay. The staff also left us with the impression of very courteous hospitality. Above all, the meals served in a private dining room were delicious, and the service was excellent—truly the best. This is an Accommodation that makes us want to stay again. Thank you very much.

Snowy Minakami Mountain Lodge is amazing! I would love to visit again during the fresh green season.

It was a wonderful Ryokan.
The staff provided excellent and courteous service, the meals made with seasonal local ingredients were outstanding, and while the building shows its age, it was impeccably clean, allowing for a comfortable stay. The Onsen experience while enjoying the snowy landscape and the majestic view of Mount Tanigawa was truly exceptional. I would love to stay here again if I have another opportunity.

Had a great stay.
A tranquil and relaxing accommodation. I stayed in the Sakura room. The spacious layout, cleanliness, and comfort were excellent. All baths, including the large public bath and private indoor bath, feature natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source. Soaking in the tub while enjoying the snowy view of Mount Manokura was truly wonderful. The meals showcased the chef's creativity and skill with well-prepared dishes, complemented by a variety of alcoholic beverages to enjoy. The staff were mostly calm and friendly, and their handwritten guides added a warm touch that was greatly appreciated.

The hot water is excellent.
Above all, this accommodation offers the best natural hot spring experience. I always enjoy the soothing waters before heading home. The open-air bath in the large public bath tends to be slightly lukewarm during winter, but I still enjoy the breathtaking view of Mount Tanigawa. The meals are different every time I stay, with creative touches that make them a delight. I look forward to visiting again in the future!

Drinkable Onsen is a rare and valuable experience.
This was my second stay, and I was able to enjoy a quiet and relaxing time again. Bathing while admiring the stunning view of Mt. Tanigawa was exceptional. The meals were creatively prepared using local ingredients. The coffee served in the lounge in the morning was delicious. Choosing a room with an Onsen bath was the perfect decision. I look forward to visiting this accommodation again in different seasons!

Three-Tiered Autumn Leaves and Relaxing Hot Springs
I have stayed at all the Ryokans in Tanigawa Onsen, but the cheerful greetings from the staff, detailed explanations of the dishes at the dining area, and perfect timing of serving were exceptional. I was pleased that there were few river fish on the menu as I am not a fan. However, it was disappointing that the wine list was limited. The open-air bath in our room was spacious and allowed for a relaxing experience. The snowy view of Mt. Manaitagake and the autumn foliage on the mountains from the lounge looked like a painting framed by nature. I plan to visit again in spring for a girls' trip and look forward to enjoying cherry blossom season!

If evaluated strictly...
If I were to give a strict evaluation: Meals) The portions were too large for us, and the seasoning felt a bit strong. Facility) There was only one elevator, which felt slightly inconvenient. Onsen) Compared to the private open-air bath in the room, the temperature of the large public bath was lower, which was disappointing. (Perhaps it was affected by rain, but we had been looking forward to enjoying the large public bath as well.) The shower also used onsen water and had low water pressure as noted in the bathroom; however, it felt excessively low. It would have been helpful to know this information beforehand. Overall, as a retreat accommodation, it is excellent. The quality of the onsen water is outstanding!

Stunning views and excellent cuisine
The view of Mount Tanigawa from the lobby and room was picturesque and mesmerizing. The meals, made with carefully selected ingredients from Gunma Prefecture, were delicious. The mushroom hot pot, especially in this season, was truly delightful. The Onsen's hinoki bath had a great atmosphere and water quality; I enjoyed it three times. However, the outdoor bath had a low temperature, which felt challenging during this season despite the beautiful scenery—such a pity!

A couple looking forward to enjoying Onsen and cuisine
For dinner, I was expecting dishes like salt-grilled sweetfish and beef hot pot as listed on IKYU, but the main course felt cheap. The sashimi bonito had an unpleasant smell; if fresh sea fish is unavailable, I think local river fish would be a better option. As for bedding, the comforter was heavy yet not warm enough, making it uncomfortable to sleep. It was inconvenient that tea utensils had to be fetched from another Room. It's disappointing because the Onsen was excellent.

It was a quiet and nice accommodation.
Stayed for one night and two days. The communication after the reservation was smooth, and the shuttle service to the station on the day was flexible and accommodating. The staff were friendly and responded kindly whenever we needed assistance. We stayed in a room with a semi-open-air bath, which was very clean, allowing us to relax in the tub with peace of mind. The public bath wasn't too crowded either, so we could enjoy it at our own pace—very satisfying! The meals were course-style and quite filling! One small issue: we visited for a birthday celebration and had mentioned it as a surprise. However, during checkout, the payment amount was fully visible... It would have been better if only additional charges after check-in were shown or if they had been placed in an envelope or something similar. (We also let our guard down!) It's an accommodation that I hope becomes more popular while secretly wishing it remains a hidden gem!

Thank you for your patronage.
We use this place several times a year with colleagues. The dinner is delicious, and we especially love the breakfast. We are always grateful for your thoughtful service. The Room's bath is so comfortable that we never want to get out of it. We look forward to staying here again in the future.

First Visit to Minakami Onsen
I visited Minakami Onsen for the first time via the Joetsu Shinkansen, and it was more enjoyable than I had expected. Initially, I mistakenly got off at the "Minakami Onsen" bus stop instead of taking the bus from Jomo-Kogen Station to JR Minakami Station. However, thanks to the quick thinking of your staff, a shuttle service waiting at Minakami Station was sent to pick me up, which was a great help. The magnificent view of Mount Tanigawa from not only the large windows in the lobby but also from my room's window and both indoor and outdoor onsen baths was breathtaking. Unfortunately, clouds covered the upper part of Mount Tanigawa, so I couldn't see its full view—that was my only regret. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious with generous portions—almost too much for us! As others have mentioned in their reviews, while my room's private open-air onsen bath had just the right temperature, the outdoor onsen bath outside felt too cold; we quickly returned to our room after trying it out. Considering this happened at the end of September, I imagine it might be quite challenging during autumn or later seasons. Nevertheless, we thoroughly enjoyed soaking in our room’s bath with its excellent water quality. The staff provided attentive and efficient service that left a very positive impression. Next time, I hope to visit during a season when we can fully enjoy even the cooler outdoor onsen baths!

This was my first stay at the accommodation during a trip with my parents. The (Sakura) room had a living area and two bedrooms, offering a spacious, clean, and comfortable environment. The private bath featured natural hot spring water, and the mountain view from the bath was like a painting. It would have been better if the water temperature in the large public bath was slightly warmer. The meals were creative cuisine with a focus on Japanese dishes while incorporating Western elements. They were delicious, plentiful, and almost too much to finish. At night, we were lucky to stay on a day when there happened to be a surprise performance of trombone, piano, and ocarina music. The staff members were very kind, making it an enjoyable trip overall. Thank you very much!

Not available at the moment.
I enjoyed the Onsen and the food so much that I visited multiple times. However, every time I go, I am asked if it’s my first visit. Don’t they check guest history? Even though it doesn’t seem busy, the staff don’t interact much or see guests off. It’s quite disappointing.

Overall, it is a great accommodation.
This was my fourth stay. The meals are always delicious, and the onsen is incredibly relaxing—I’m completely captivated by this accommodation. However, the handle of the bath bucket in the room I stayed in this time was covered with black stains, possibly mold, which caught my attention. Other than that, everything was as excellent as always. I will definitely stay here again.

Perfect Onsen for Summer
Tanigawa Onsen is lukewarm, making it perfect for summer. The men's bath is a bit small. The building shows its age but seems to be well-maintained. Meals are creatively arranged and incredibly delicious.

I would like to visit each season.
The accommodation exceeded expectations and did not disappoint. The bedding was carefully selected, ensuring a restful sleep. Meals were delicious and thoughtfully prepared with great care. The staff serving the meals were friendly, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The water temperature in the bath was pleasantly low, allowing for multiple relaxing soaks. If I had to mention one thing, it would be that the window glass in the room and bathroom could have been cleaner. Overall, a highly satisfying accommodation experience. I would love to visit again!

A nostalgic and relaxing Onsen
This was my second stay. The view from the private open-air bath was magnificent and breathtaking. The natural hot spring water had a perfect temperature. The meals were delicious, and I was very satisfied. I look forward to visiting again to enjoy the autumn and winter scenery.

An accommodation worth revisiting.
From the lounge and the room, you can enjoy a view of Mount Tanigawa, and on the day of arrival, the weather was perfect, making it look like a painting. The meals and desserts were very delicious, and we were able to relax in a private room. The bathwater was lukewarm, which was perfect for summer, allowing us to soak leisurely. At night, they provided pajamas and lavender-scented sachets, and in the morning after breakfast, they prepared coffee in the lounge—such wonderful hospitality. Our entire family was completely satisfied. Thank you so much!

This was my second v...
This was my second visit, the first being during the Heisei era in winter. I remember that finding the way to the accommodation was challenging and there were stink bugs in the lobby (which surprised me as it was winter). The accommodation is located by a gorge overlooking Mount Tanigawa, offering breathtaking views from both the lounge for guests and rooms (including rooms with semi-open-air baths). Notably, stone chairs with backrests are placed in both the large open-air bath and semi-open-air baths in rooms to enjoy views of Mount Tanigawa—something unique compared to other accommodations. Before dinner, I enjoyed a relaxing soak in the large bath while admiring the view, then returned to my room to savor beer with this stunning scenery. During dinner, staff members (who seemed foreign but spoke fluent Japanese and provided warm service) made for a pleasant experience alongside exquisite dishes and delicious sake. Back at my room, I enjoyed another bath while feeling the breeze before having one of my best sleeps in a long time—truly grateful for this experience. I heard that even on departure day all rooms were fully booked; it's wonderful that such an accommodation thrives. While I've realized it’s also relaxing during summer here, I’d love to visit again in winter!

The people, the food, and the hot water are all wonderful.
This is an accommodation I almost don't want to share with others, hoping it stays unchanged. I had a wonderful holiday.

Though the property ...
Though the property is old, it is well-maintained and exudes a charming sense of nostalgia. The location, surrounded by stunning natural scenery, was exceptional. While not extravagant, the meals made with local ingredients showcased thoughtful preparation. If I had to point out a minor downside, it would be that the Onsen water temperature was slightly lukewarm for my preference. However, the staff's service was genuinely sincere and attentive throughout our stay (including providing discount tickets for Tenichi Art Museum and their thoughtful Shuttle Service). Thank you for your hospitality!

That excitement...
Stayed for the first time in March this year and was deeply impressed by the open-air bath in the guest room and the cuisine. This time, I decided to stay for a multiple night stay to relax, making it my second visit. Once again, I was very satisfied with the open-air bath in the guest room and the warm hospitality of all staff members. However, I was disappointed with the cuisine that I had been looking forward to. The incredible taste and emotion from last time were unfortunately not present at all this time. Although it seems that the head chef has not changed, I wonder if something happened. The quality was clearly different, and my partner shared the same opinion. That said, with its calming atmosphere, excellent service, and breathtaking views from the open-air bath in each guest room, this accommodation is still well worth staying at. I sincerely hope for a revival of your exceptional cuisine.

The private open-air bath and meals were excellent.
The highlight is undoubtedly the private open-air Onsen in the room. The spacious rock bath features a chair-shaped area with a backrest, allowing you to sit and enjoy a stunning view of Mount Tanigawa. The luxury extends to the shower, which also uses Onsen water thanks to its abundant supply. The meals exceeded expectations, made with high-quality ingredients and great care. The summer-only shell-on sea urchin and crème brûlée dessert were particularly delicious! After dinner, we enjoyed watching fireflies at a nearby biotope, and the next day at Tanigawa-dake Yochihoh, we admired beautiful fields of blooming Nikko Kisuge flowers. We look forward to staying in the same room again during another season!

It was good. However.
The meals, the private room bath, and the drinkable Onsen were very satisfying. The free-flowing Onsen was slightly lukewarm but very pleasant. Both dinner and breakfast were extremely delicious. However, as others have mentioned, we were disappointed with the male staff during meal service. Perhaps it was a matter of compatibility, but it felt like there was a lack of hospitality. We look forward to visiting again during the autumn foliage season.

Concerns or Questions
The rice is cold and hard. It becomes clumped together, making it difficult to serve with a rice paddle. It feels more like homemade cooking. I would prefer to enjoy authentic Ryokan kaiseki cuisine. While I appreciate the cost-conscious efforts, please ensure proper temperature management until serving. The appeal of the Onsen is undeniable. For the first time, I encountered both a dead insect and a live one of the same kind under the cushion.
