The meals were absolutely delicious. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared with care. The view from the open-air bath was beautiful, and soaking slowly was the best. The hospitality from the Accommodation staff was wonderful as well. I’d love to come again.

Dinner is boldly adventurous in the best way.

Above all, dinner was outstanding this time. Perfect for summer, each dish looked refreshingly cool and tasted delicious. Even when we visit in the same season, there is always a pleasant surprise. Please pass on our compliments to the head chef.

    A tranquil Ryokan

Stayed with my wife, daughter, and granddaughter (4 guests). I had the in-room free-flowing hot-spring bath almost to myself; the spring quality and temperature were perfect for recuperation after an illness. The breathtaking views of Mt. Tanigawa were astonishing—an excellent Accommodation that met our expectations.

    Thank you very much!

Thank you very much for taking such wonderful care of us during our three-generation family trip. Every dish, made with an abundance of local ingredients, was truly delicious and deeply moving. The luxurious free-flowing Onsen fed directly from the source was incredibly soothing, and we found ourselves returning again and again throughout our stay. The morning drink service was also exceptional—enjoying coffee while taking in the breathtaking view was a special treat, and we were able to spend a blissful moment. Thanks to the proprietress’s thoughtful sense of style throughout the property and the warm, attentive hospitality of all the staff, our whole family made unforgettable memories. Thank you again.

    A perfect Hotel

Valet service is available, and the view of the southern side of the Tanigawa Mountain Range from the lobby is stunning. The large public bath is a bit small, but we were satisfied that we could also enjoy the view from the open-air bath. The Room we stayed in this time was amazing—the same mountains could be seen both from the living area and from the jacuzzi bath. Especially in the jacuzzi bath, you can fully open all the windows—absolutely wonderful! I understand it must have been difficult, but with some nearby cedar trees cleared, we were grateful for the improved views. We enjoyed hearing about the dishes as well as chatting with staff; service was excellent and made our stay very enjoyable. If we have another chance, we’d love to visit again.

Beyond the small entryway lies a whole new world.

Because the Accommodation is located deep in the valley, the entrance felt narrow. However, once inside the lounge, the view of Mt. Tanigawa was breathtaking—like looking at a huge painting. The Onsen was neither diluted nor heated, and it was even drinkable; it was the most relaxing Onsen I have ever experienced. Of course, the food was delicious, and the staff were wonderful with warm smiles—an excellent Accommodation overall. I would definitely like to stay again.

    We stayed as a famil...

We stayed as a family trip. The Room was a spacious area created by connecting what used to be a private scenic-view bath space with the guest room, and we were able to relax and unwind comfortably. Above all, the semi-open-air bath in the Room was outstanding! You can fully open the accordion-style window and enjoy a gentle, free-flowing natural Onsen jacuzzi while taking in breathtaking views of Mt. Tanigawadake in an incredibly open setting. The meals featured carefully prepared dishes, and it was fun to taste them while guessing what ingredients were used. I also felt the chef’s attention to detail in providing an ingredient list on the back of the menu. Some parts of the Facility show signs of age, but you can tell they are doing their best with maintenance. However, I think the entrance door to the men’s large public bath outdoor bath should be repaired as soon as possible. When I first went in, it had come off its rail and was difficult to open and close, which made me uneasy about going outside. Also, not only in the morning but throughout the day—like other Ryokan in a similar price range—I think having complimentary drinks available at all times in the lounge would allow guests to enjoy even more of its wonderful view. The staff service was excellent; you could really feel their desire to welcome guests. When I casually mentioned my son’s birthday at Reservation time, they not only greeted us at check-in but also celebrated it for us. With so many strong points here, I feel that attentive care for Facilities and equipment is essential to maintain such high satisfaction. If we have another opportunity, we would like to stay again.

It was disappointing that the bath towel had a hole. Waiting 20 minutes between the charcoal udon palate cleanser and the hot pot course was far too long. The Shuttle Service was very helpful. This was an Accommodation I had wanted to visit for a long time, but I felt that once was enough.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication to management!

This was our first visit in two years, and our seventh stay overall. Once again, we stayed in our favorite Room with both a sofa and a bed, and fully enjoyed relaxing with plenty of reading and Onsen time. At Minakami Sanso, the hot springs are wonderful no matter how many times we visit—but even more than that, I truly admire the dedication and management efforts to maintain service quality through creativity and ingenuity despite the ongoing rise in prices. (It almost feels too good a value for money—we’re honestly humbled.) The meals were also plentiful again, featuring dishes made with a strong commitment to local production for local consumption, along with some playful touches from the head chef. They were a delight to look at as well. Even though there were many courses, each dish was surprisingly light and easy to eat, so even we—who usually don’t eat much—were able to enjoy everything deliciously without feeling overly full. We also had Mr. Y take care of us partway through the meal again this time. He somehow seemed even more youthful than before, and we really enjoyed chatting with him. In an industry where staff turnover is often high, it’s always nice to come here and see familiar faces. Whether it’s spring with its dazzling fresh greenery, summer when everything is lush and green, or autumn with its beautiful foliage—no matter the season, everyone at Minakami Sanso warmly welcomes guests together with Mt. Tanigawa. Someday, I secretly hope to soak in the warm Onsen while watching Mt. Tanigawa surrounded by deep winter snow.

    Onsen, views, and cuisine

Although we were told this Accommodation offers views of Mt. Tanigawa, we couldn’t see it due to rain and fog. Even so, the lush greenery right in front of us, the pleasantly warm free-flowing natural Onsen that we could soak in endlessly (the bath in our Room was also semi-open-air and wonderful!), the carefully prepared meals (more about quality than quantity—perfect for adults, with sashimi you wouldn’t expect in the mountains), and the friendly staff made our stay truly enjoyable for the three of us as a family. My parents are 84 and 83, and each time we travel I can’t help but think it might be our last trip together. We were able to spend such a comfortable time here, and I’m very grateful. Thank you very much. My parents even said—unusually positively—“It was so much fun. I want to travel together again. For that, I need to stay healthy!” That’s how much they enjoyed it. If we have the chance, we would love to visit again.

This Accommodation is known for its delicious meals.

A weekday opening became available, so I was able to stay even as a solo traveler. I’d been curious about this Accommodation for a long time, so I was really looking forward to it! From the lobby and my Room, I could see the magnificent Mt. Tanigawa, and the view alone was instantly soothing. Since my Room had a private Onsen, I was able to enjoy it many times. It may depend on the season, but the Onsen in the Room was quite hot, so long soaks might be difficult. On the other hand, the open-air bath in the large public bath was pleasantly warm, and I could relax while enjoying the scenery! The water had a high pH level, which left my skin feeling wonderfully smooth. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The flavors were gentle with rich dashi broth, making everything light and easy to enjoy. The beef and pork dishes in particular were outstanding! It felt very true to Gunma and made me very happy. The manju provided in the Room was also excellent! Since they were freshly made they don’t seem to keep for long, but I think they would make a well-received souvenir. It was a wonderful stay just as I had hoped. Thank you very much!

    It had improved.

I visited for the first time in 18 years. From what I remembered back then, it truly felt like a hidden retreat, and the Accommodation had an almost mysterious atmosphere. It was the kind of place where you’re pleasantly surprised to find such perfect cuisine in such a remote setting—an Accommodation that suited soft, gentle lighting. On this return visit, it felt brighter and more welcoming in a good way. The meals were as delicious as ever, and the Onsen was still wonderful. That alone was more than enough to satisfy me. There was also a complimentary drink service for Diamond members, with local beer as well as carefully selected apple juice and a yogurt drink stocked in the Room refrigerator. Both yukata robes and separate sleepwear were provided in the Room. Tabi socks were also available. The in-room bath was free-flowing (kakenagashi) and ran continuously. This time we stayed in a Room where even a wheelchair user could be comfortable. It was spacious and thoughtfully arranged—so much so that I’d like to bring my elderly mother next time. The only thing that concerned me was a musty smell in that in-room bath. I’m giving 4 stars with the hope that it will be improved by my next visit. Thanks to your hospitality, we were able to relax and take our time. It’s one of my favorite Accommodations.

An accommodation where you can fully enjoy everything Tanigawa has to offer

I stayed for one night on the first day of Golden Week. My Room was “Suzuran.” It felt a bit casual for something described as a luxury suite, and the building showed its age, but everything was well maintained and clean. The only disappointment was that, despite having Mt. Tanigawa with lingering snow right in front of us, the windows were small. To make up for it, I opened the window of the open-air bath in the Room fully and enjoyed the view. Also, since my Room was right next to the large public bath, I worried about hearing other guests’ footsteps morning and night, but it wasn’t an issue at all. For dinner, I relaxed in a private room with windows on two sides while reading a message from the head chef and listening to explanations from cheerful staff. You could tell that even the smallest condiments were prepared with great care. Even something as simple as making TMG by pouring Shoda soy sauce (apparently brewed by Empress Michiko’s family) over springy eggs—almost gelatin-like—and local Minakami Koshihikari rice “Suigetsuyo” felt like an exceptional feast; so needless to say, everything else—from meat and vegetables to sashimi including ginko—was outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed spring in Tanigawa until I was completely full. They also take pride in their coffee, and having a cup in the scenic-view lobby—also a symbol of this Accommodation—was truly special. The Onsen goes without saying: flawless. The open-air bath facing Mt. Tanigawa and the mountain stream was incredible—I could soak for a long time in gentle water while gazing absentmindedly at nature. If possible, I would appreciate an opportunity to share my feedback directly with both the proprietress and the head chef.

The view of Mt. Tanigawa from our Room, the free-flowing Onsen, and the thoughtfully prepared meals made our first family trip in a while truly wonderful. We rated the Facility 4 because the toilet washlet was a bit weak, and we rated amenities 4 because we hoped for a slightly higher-quality toothbrush set. We felt warm hospitality in every detail and were able to spend a very relaxing time together as a family. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Thank you as always.

This was my first stay in two months, and everything was excellent—the hot water, the meals, and the Room—so I was able to relax very comfortably. The food is always delicious, but this time I was also impressed by the beautiful tableware. This was my first time staying in Chigusa since the renovation, and because it’s compact, it has a short layout flow and was a very convenient Room. I’d love to stay in this Room for New Year’s as well (just thinking out loud…).

    We’re sorry to hear that.

I stay at Accommodations with free-flowing hot spring baths every month and visited this Accommodation feeling excited, but after arriving, when I declined the valet service, one male staff member curtly said, “Then park there,” which felt unpleasant. The semi-open-air bath in the Room was smaller than it looked in the photos. It was also disappointing that I couldn’t choose the Room. On the morning of our second night, I suddenly had to return home. The checkout at the front desk was fine, but afterward he stomped over to the shoe area and tossed my shoes down. It made me want to ask why I had to be treated like that. If I’d had time, I would have asked to speak with the manager. (It was the same male staff member as at arrival.)

    A long-held wish come true

We visited Minakami Sanso, a place my husband had been wanting to go. With a series of lucky coincidences, we enjoyed a relaxing trip by train and bus. Our experience with the Accommodation began with the pickup car at Minakami Station. We were welcomed with beaming smiles. They arrived before the bus we had told them about and even took care with our luggage. It was an encounter that made us feel, “This Accommodation will be wonderful.” We arrived in less than 10 minutes, and they greeted us warmly and courteously with the spectacular Mt. Tanigawa right in front of us. There are three things that made this Accommodation truly outstanding. First is the food—just as everyone says. The portions and flavors were perfectly balanced, with thoughtful creativity and beautiful presentation. We also added basashi (horse sashimi), and it was the best I have ever had. I usually get full before the main meat or fish dish and can’t fully enjoy Gunma’s meat, but this time it was shabu-shabu, so I could finish it easily. Satisfying yet not heavy on the stomach. Breakfast was also well-balanced to pair perfectly with delicious rice. It’s a shame we couldn’t meet the head chef. From the originality and dessert selections, I felt they have a fresh sensibility as well—and their careful attention to each detail was truly masterful. Second is the Onsen. Our Room had a semi-open-air bath, fed by free-flowing natural spring water—and it was even drinkable Onsen water—so its warmth, smoothness, and calming atmosphere were exceptional for relaxing at ease. I soaked while being mindful not to overdo it; I could have stayed in for ages. My husband also thoroughly enjoyed the large public bath. Late at night, it seems the open-air bath becomes slightly lukewarm—probably due to early spring temperatures. We thought that in summer it would be perfect for long soaks without overheating. We were told that all taps in our Room run Onsen water as well, which reassured us. That’s why even the tea we drank in our Room and the iced water left for us at night tasted wonderful. Third is how impeccably clean everything was, along with how lovely the flower arrangements and ornaments displayed throughout were. I was amazed at how spotless our Room bath was kept. Even though there is a mix of newer elements and an older historic building structure—ceilings and corridors included—it was impressive throughout: stained glass windows, coffee cups, tableware—everything was beautiful. And there were no unpleasant odors anywhere—not only towels and bedding but also around faucets and drains. Thank you very much for your thoughtful hospitality. We will definitely return again.

    We’re extremely satisfied!

I stayed here with my parents for the first time in about three years. From the Onsen to the staff’s attentive hospitality and service, as well as the meals and drinking the spring water, we (including my parents) were very satisfied with our two-night, three-day stay! Although I say we were very satisfied, I rated both the Onsen and the meals 4 stars for the following minor reasons: - The amount of food (number of dishes) felt like it had decreased. It was definitely delicious, but I remember there being more dishes and a heartier volume last time. I assume this may be due to rising costs, but it felt a bit lacking. - There were quite a lot of insects in the outdoor bath at the large public bath. We used the provided net to scoop them out, but it felt never-ending. Also, centipede-like bugs occasionally appeared in the changing room. For guests who dislike insects, this might be unpleasant.

A Memorable Accommodation You’ll Want to Return to Again and Again — Hinoki no Yado Minakami Sanso

This was my second stay at “Hinoki no Yado Minakami Sanso,” booked via IKYU.com. This Accommodation left a strong impression on me from my first visit, and it is without doubt one of my favorite places I want to return to again and again. The level of hospitality felt throughout the property once again far exceeded my expectations. Following my previous stay in “Hinoki,” this time I stayed in “Chigusa.” From the Room’s semi-open-air bath, I could enjoy a panoramic view of Mt. Tanigawa still capped with lingering snow even in this season—soaking while taking in the scenery is truly exceptional. The Onsen water temperature at Minakami Onsen / Tanigawadake Onsen is comfortable even for a long soak; for me it was exactly right, and that is another major plus. Next time, I would love to stay in “Katsura.” The view from the large public bath is also wonderful and deeply relaxing both physically and mentally. One of my personal favorite moments is enjoying coffee in the scenic lounge while gazing out through the large windows. And most notably: the cuisine. Not only can you savor seasonal ingredients at their best, but each dish reflects the chef’s dedication, skill, and spirit of hospitality—an inspiring succession of highly creative courses. The choice of tableware and presentation is excellent as well, elevating every dish even further. Rather than serving standard items like simple meat dishes or sashimi platters, every course featured flavors and pairings beyond what I expected, reminding me how enjoyable dining can be. From late-night bites to breakfast, there was not a hint of compromise—making this a stay that strongly made me feel, “I will definitely come back.”

Because our schedules rarely aligned, this was our first stay in a while. As always, the spectacular views and the quality of the hot spring water are truly one of a kind. Dinner is always thoughtfully presented, including how the sashimi is served. Of course, it was delicious. For breakfast, I was happy to see the hōba-yaki return. We would love to stay with you again.

    Unfortunately, it’s raining.

Unfortunately, our trip was rainy this time, but the mountain views from Minakami Sanso were exceptional. The Room was spacious and we had a very comfortable stay. However, I was disappointed that when we arrived, you kindly offered to take our wet umbrella along with our shoes, but at departure the umbrella was returned still wet together with the shoes. If so, I could have dried it in the Room myself... I don’t know what the weather will be like next time, but if my umbrella is wet, it’s fine not to store it—thank you. Other than that, everything was very comfortable.

The views and the Onsen are wonderful!

However, there were a few things that concerned me. First, the open-air bath with its spectacular views—something you can’t experience at other Ryokan—when I tried to be the first to use it right after check-in, the tub wasn’t filled, and there was a large amount of cedar pollen and insects floating in it. It seems the water doesn’t start flowing continuously until around 7:00 p.m.... It’s a shame that such an amazing view can only really be enjoyed in the morning. Also, the dinner was completely different from what I had seen on YouTube beforehand, which was disappointing. There were many cold dishes that could be prepared in advance, so they didn’t warm me up. The additional dishes—horse sashimi? Karasumi?—are specialties from other prefectures. Since this is Minakami, I would have preferred salt-grilled or sashimi iwana or yamame trout; and the hōba-yaki pork served at breakfast was very delicious and something I wished had been included at dinner. That said, considering the Accommodation cost, I can forgive everything...

I was soothed by a wonderful Onsen.

We were able to enjoy the Onsen while looking out at Mt. Tanigawa. Both dinner and breakfast were very satisfying in terms of taste and portion size. The meals were excellent. A minor point, but it was disappointing that the bath towels in the Room weren’t soft and that there was no bathrobe. The bed was also too soft, which was unfortunate. Still, we were able to enjoy the spectacular view of Mt. Tanigawa, which made up for those points.

    Tanigawa Onsen

I’ve stayed at many Onsen in the Joetsu area, but this was my first time visiting Tanigawa Onsen. The view toward Mt. Tanigawa was wonderful, and I was able to relax fully thanks to the baths, the meals, and the hospitality. If I have the chance, it’s a Ryokan I’ve added to my list of places I’d love to visit again.

A solo getaway to enjoy the snow.

A weekday solo trip on a whim, taking advantage of senior perks and good weather. My goal was Onsen rather than sightseeing. I took local trains at an easy pace from Kanagawa—about 4 hours. About 30 cm of snow had piled up on the roof. With light snowflakes drifting down, I could see Mt. Tanigawa slightly off to the side from the open-air bath. The Accommodation’s Onsen was outstanding: no added water, no heating—100% free-flowing from the source, and even drinkable. The temperature was excellent as well. With so many places calling themselves a “hidden hot spring inn” despite poor maintenance or not being truly free-flowing, I’m glad I found a genuinely great Onsen Accommodation. The Room was spacious, and from the sunken kotatsu—and even from the window—I could see Mt. Tanigawa. Dinner started with a pre-meal drink of “Yukimi Apple Sake,” followed by many creatively prepared dishes using local ingredients—11 items in total, including Joshu beef sukiyaki. Breakfast was just as varied and filling (including miso-braised pork), almost like dinner—I finished everything. At both dinner and breakfast, I could really feel the chef’s passion. One puzzling point: shochu. The menu listed “Imo Shochu – 1 glass: 600 yen.” The glass served was the common type used for shochu with hot water, but it was only about half full. A beer “one mug” is usually served full (mug size aside). In the UK, glasses have pint markings. Since this seems to be the Accommodation’s policy (e.g., 120 ml at a set ratio), complaining to staff would have missed the point—but when you order “one glass,” you naturally expect it to be filled to the top. Maybe seniors are too picky about small things! Still, the hot-water mix itself was just right. The next day brought perfect weather again, so I decided to take the Mt. Tanigawa Ropeway up to Tenjindaira. Most of the skiers were foreigners. I tried scuba diving last year but have never skied; watching everyone glide along so smoothly made me think maybe skiing is next for me. On my way back I considered visiting Doai Station (“Japan’s No.1 mole station”), but apparently its uphill platform is above ground—and going down and back up those 486 steps felt like too much this time—so I’ll save it for next time. Instead, I went straight to Minakami Station. A weekday solo Onsen trip by local trains—my remaining years may be few, but I have plenty of time. Once again, I enjoyed many things this trip as well. Thank you very much.
