    Birthday Trip with My Daughter

    It was a very nice accommodation. However, there wasn't any particular sense of uniqueness exclusive to this accommodation. Still, I had a great time with my daughter, so it was good. The morning bread was truly delicious.

    This was an accommodation I had always wanted to visit. We arrived quite early, completed the check-in process, and while waiting to be shown to our room, we enjoyed exploring the spacious grounds, buying bread at the Bakery & Table, and relaxing with tea in the lounge exclusively for guests. Even just that was enough to make us happy. For this trip, I had requested via email in advance for assistance with a surprise birthday cake and timing for presenting a prepared gift. The staff responded very kindly and cooperatively, making it a memorable day as the recipient was overjoyed on the day itself. Thank you also for the lovely message—it became an unforgettable day for us as well. Since there were six of us, we used three maisonette-type rooms in a separate building. It was quiet and comfortable; from the bath in our room, we could hear the sound of the river flowing nearby. Everyone loved it so much that leaving felt bittersweet—we will definitely visit again! The thoughtful care from every staff member made our stay truly pleasant and comfortable. Thank you very much!

    I was satisfied with my stay.

    We stayed for one night as a party of two. The hospitality and service from the staff were exactly as expected. However, it was disappointing that the humidifier in the room did not work at all, and dinner was served after 8 PM, leaving little time to relax afterward. From the welcome drink to the farewell, everything was very pleasant, though these small issues were a bit unfortunate. Still, this has become a place we would like to visit regularly in the future. We also felt like staying for a Multiple Night Stay next time. My companion was also very pleased. Thank you very much!

    Previously, I stayed...

    Previously, I stayed with four friends and was very satisfied with the accommodation. This time, I visited again after a long time with my family of four. While many accommodations fail to impress on subsequent visits despite initial excitement, Tofuya truly exceeded expectations once again and felt even more wonderful than before. Regarding the meals, although my daughters can be quite particular about food, both were deeply impressed by how delicious everything was. Not only was the food exceptional, but the tableware and presentation were also exquisite. The property is incredibly spacious; while we did get a bit lost at times, it added to the fun and allowed us to enjoy a fulfilling experience. Thank you so much for everything! We would love to visit again in the future.

    Simply outstanding.

    This time, we stayed in a detached Villa Suite Maisonette Room. The room was breathtakingly beautiful yet somehow felt calming and comfortable. The Onsen, both the private open-air bath in the room and the outdoor open-air bath, offered great views, were well-maintained, and provided a relaxing experience to wash away daily fatigue. The meals were absolutely delicious for all four family members, beautifully presented, and left us completely satisfied. The garden was vast yet impeccably maintained, showcasing the high standards of this accommodation. It was a truly wonderful trip. We look forward to visiting again!

    It was an accommodation I had wanted to visit for a long time. The front lobby had an open ceiling with a fireplace, which was lit in the evening, creating a lovely early winter atmosphere. However, the main dishes for dinner were pork shabu-shabu and beef shabu-shabu, which was disappointing for me as I am not fond of beef shabu-shabu.

    The facility was nice, and the Room was clean and pleasant, but... taking a bath was inconvenient as I had to use the narrow shower room next to the washroom, then pass through the bedroom to reach the bathtub.

    Meal Times

    Izu Hotel Resort & Spa Akakura Kanko Hotel and, lastly, Tofuya Resort & Spa were the accommodations we stayed at during our trip. Each had its pros and cons, but all staff members were courteous, the facilities were clean, and the overall experience was relaxing and satisfying. However, there are a few points to note: 1. Regarding dinner start times: Although I knew it was a two-part system, I assumed that arriving early for check-in would allow us to secure our preferred time. Despite arriving very early (likely first), we were told that the earlier slot was already fully booked. As a result, our dinner started around 7:45 PM and ended close to 10 PM. Since we usually have dinner by 6 PM, this was quite challenging for us (though the food itself was delicious). If you prefer an earlier dining time slot, it is highly recommended to strongly communicate your preference by phone when making your reservation. 2. The facility is very spacious—this is one of its charms—but it may be slightly challenging for those who find mobility difficult. Some private baths require navigating significant stairs which might deter some guests from using them. The meals are delicious; however, improving privacy in dining areas could enhance satisfaction further. The semi-open-air bath in the room was excellent; however, both the public bath and private open-air baths felt rather ordinary in comparison. Overall, I would consider staying here again someday—provided that we can secure an earlier dinner time slot!

    Last month, I stayed at various Ryokans in Kurokawa Onsen for three nights, and among them, Tofuya stood out as the best. They provide yukata, samue, and especially comfortable gauze pajamas for sleeping, which became my absolute favorite. At Taishokan, I also enjoyed a cozy time chatting while sipping beer and plum wine.

    An accommodation that you'll want to visit again and again for relaxation.

    I have stayed here about five times for various purposes, including family trips, trips with friends, and solo travel. It is rare and valuable to find a luxury accommodation that caters to solo travelers. The accommodation is enveloped in tranquility with only the sounds of nature, providing a deeply soothing experience. The meals were perfectly portioned—not too much or too little—and featured delicious Japanese cuisine made with seasonal ingredients. Although transportation from Shuzenji was quite inconvenient without a car, the shuttle bus service resolved this issue and improved accessibility. This time, I stayed in the main building for the first time. While there were slight signs of aging in the room, they were within an acceptable range. Aside from minor issues such as splinters on the floor of the private open-air bath and dust on the TV remote control, everything else was excellent—the bed was very comfortable for sleeping, there were plenty of towels provided, and I enjoyed relaxing views of the river and nature from my window. I look forward to visiting again next year. Thank you!

    Previously, I stayed...

    Previously, I stayed in a Japanese-style room with my family and had a wonderful experience, so this time I revisited for a girls' trip. We chose the Maisonette Kura Room, which had washbasins on both floors, making it convenient for four people to get ready in the morning. However, since everything could be done on the upper floor, the space on the lower floor felt somewhat underutilized. Also, the lighting was not very bright, which made it slightly inconvenient when doing makeup. Other than that, my friends were very pleased with everything—the drink service at Taishokan, private baths available by reservation, and abundant amenities such as towels, yukata robes, samue outfits, and pajamas that made it easy to come empty-handed. The autumn leaves were beautiful during this season; we enjoyed leisurely walks to a bakery and relaxed in the open-air bath. It was truly an enjoyable girls' trip after a long time. The staff provided attentive and friendly service throughout our stay—I felt reassured recommending this accommodation to my friends. Next time I'd love to visit during cherry blossom season!     The best words

    A wonderful accommodation blending Japanese and Western styles, modern and antique elements, with a luxurious feel in every aspect. The staff were all very pleasant, making us smile naturally. The meals were delicious with just the right portions, and we enjoyed everything down to the dessert. Upon arrival, we immediately relaxed in a private open-air bath and later chatted while enjoying alcohol or coffee at Taisho Hall. Taisho Hall had a retro charm with sparkling chandeliers that made us take countless photos. The room's bath provided natural hot spring water directly from the faucet, was impeccably clean, and allowed for complete relaxation. The next morning, we visited the attached bakery workshop where we managed to buy three loaves of our favorite grape bread—everything was perfect! (It’s a popular spot; there was already a line even though it opened at 10 AM.) Honestly, I’d love to stay at this accommodation again soon. It seems there are other accommodations within the same group as well, so I’m eager to plan my next visit. Thank you for such an amazing experience!

    Highly recommended during the autumn foliage season.

    We chose this Hotel expecting beautiful autumn leaves from the Room and delicious meals. It was raining on the check-in day, so we enjoyed a drink in the lounge before heading to the Onsen. The next day was sunny, so we took a walk around the premises after checking out. The area near the riverside was very pleasant. Perhaps it gets lively with visitors to the bakery on weekends. Our Room was on the first floor. While I like terraces, we couldn't use it due to rain. The view from our Room was nice, but only some leaves at the top of nearby trees had turned red yet. Rooms on the second floor might offer better views of autumn leaves or cherry blossoms as shown in photos on their website. The meal Plan we chose included shabu-shabu, though I had hoped for kaiseki cuisine that I can't prepare myself—it was a bit disappointing (I mistakenly thought there would be an option to choose). Regarding service, my husband is quite particular and mentioned that some staff members seemed stiff overall; while there were moments like that, they smiled when spoken to and I found their service sufficient. During breakfast at a neighboring table, detailed explanations were provided for each dish but not for us—though it didn’t bother me as everything was self-explanatory; however, I've seen Reviews where people found such differences unpleasant at other Hotels or restaurants—so perhaps it's something worth noting. Both welcoming and send-off were done with warm smiles by all staff members which left us feeling great; my husband also commented positively about both Facility and experience overall saying he’d recommend it to others. Lastly, during dinner they gave us handwritten congratulations for celebrating kanreki (60th birthday). It read: "Congratulations on reaching your kanreki milestone! Wishing you continued happiness." However...??? (laughs) It might be good to proofread such messages before presenting them since many guests likely take photos as keepsakes (as did we).

    Shabu-shabu is not delicious.

    The kaiseki meal during the previous stay was delicious, but the meat in this time's shabu-shabu was not tasty at all. Disappointing!

    I hope this accommodation thrives.

    I would like to share my honest feedback. This time, I chose a room that was not the maisonette type. Upon entering the room, I didn’t feel a very pleasant atmosphere. It seemed that the cleaning wasn’t thorough in every corner of the room, and perhaps the air conditioner was also a factor. The room was built in 2013, so it has been 12 years since then. While some wear and tear over time is understandable, as shown in my photos, although it looks clean at first glance, dust could be seen in various corners upon closer inspection. As for the air conditioner, I didn’t examine it closely but noticed a slight odor (though this might just be me being sensitive). Regarding meals, as others have mentioned before me, they weren’t bad but nothing particularly memorable stood out either. What surprised me most was that despite informing about my allergies during the reservation process, an allergen appeared in my dessert during dinner. Fortunately, I noticed before eating it and avoided consuming it since my allergy isn’t severe; however, this could have been life-threatening for someone else with more serious allergies. I informed the restaurant staff on-site who apologized sincerely; however at checkout the next day there was no mention of this incident from front desk staff. This made me concerned whether proper communication or seriousness regarding such matters is lacking within their team—so I explained again and requested measures to prevent recurrence. This accommodation offers great onsen facilities with spacious grounds—especially along riverside areas which provide an amazing atmosphere! The bakery’s chocolate cornet is also one of my favorites. It’s such a shame! Cleaning and meals—if these two points are improved upon—it would become an exceptional accommodation!

    Dinner was absolutely delicious.

    I had a very relaxing time again with the delicious food and Onsen. The dinner, in particular, was exceptional, and I ended up drinking a bit too much as the dishes paired so well with the drinks. As for the service, it seems that many of the staff have been replaced by younger members, which made things feel slightly awkward at times, but there was nothing particularly concerning. I look forward to visiting again to enjoy the wonderful food and Onsen. Thank you for your hospitality!

    I would like to stay again and relax.

    The staff's attentive service is exceptional, further enhancing the prestige of the Ryokan. If I were to point out a minor drawback, it would be that the explanation of meals, especially breakfast, felt a bit too brief, which seemed like a missed opportunity.     Autumn Trip Just Before the Fall Foliage Season

    I stayed in late October and used the shuttle service from Shuzenji Station. The accommodation was very spacious, well-maintained, and enjoyable to explore. Although it rained on the day I arrived, the beautiful garden had a unique charm that could only be appreciated on a rainy day. Flowers were arranged throughout the facility, and various genres of paintings were displayed, showcasing thoughtful hospitality. The meals were visually stunning and tasted incredible, leaving a lasting impression. All the staff members were courteous, making my stay truly relaxing and rejuvenating.

    It's been a while since my last visit.

    My mother and I both loved this accommodation, and we used to stay here together once or twice a year since 2015. After my mother passed away last year, I hadn't visited for a while, but I felt the urge to revisit this place filled with wonderful memories of her. With my family's understanding, I embarked on my first solo trip. While being alone felt a bit lonely, the accommodation welcomed me with the same hospitality as before, allowing me to relax and reminisce about the past. The newly introduced shuttle service from Shuzenji Station was incredibly convenient (the driver even kept me company with pleasant conversation during the ride). The staff greeted me warmly wherever we crossed paths, and their attention to detail was evident in things like the flower arrangements throughout the facility—just as it had been before. Although recent labor shortages and rising costs seem to have slightly affected the extravagance of meals compared to previous visits, their quality remained high. The flavors and presentation were still very satisfying. Without venturing out for sightseeing, I enjoyed soaking in Onsen baths in my room, strolling through the spacious and beautiful garden, and having a delicious lunch at the bakery—all of which truly rejuvenated my body and mind. Staying alone can feel like an indulgence given today's prices; however, as a treat for myself, I'd love to visit again someday. One small request: It would be wonderful if you could bring back the soft-serve ice cream that used to be served at Taisho-kan! (laughs)

    It was a much more wonderful accommodation than I imagined.

    A shuttle service from Shuzenji took us directly to the location. We were overwhelmed by the impressive building, which exceeded our expectations. The walk to our room was quite long, and with a river flowing through the premises, we were amazed by the spacious grounds. The staff at the accommodation were all kind and attentive, allowing us to have a very pleasant stay. The quality of the onsen was excellent, and the meals were outstanding—the deliciousness of Ise lobster and seaweed at breakfast left a lasting impression. Inside the facility, we explored various areas such as Taisho Hall with free drinks and a bakery in another building. We enjoyed all of the private open-air baths available and had a truly relaxing time; this is an excellent ryokan for unwinding. Unfortunately, due to rain, we couldn’t go hiking within the premises this time but look forward to trying again on our next visit. Thank you once again!

    Sibling Trip

    We stayed in a Room with a private open-air bath for a Multiple Night Stay during a trip with 7 siblings over 70 years old plus one. There was a small mishap, but the staff's attentiveness during our stay was outstanding, making it an enjoyable trip. We hope to stay healthy and visit again someday.

    A Timeless Retreat

    After the October holiday, when it gets a bit cooler, we visited. From the station, we took a bus and were picked up at the bus stop for a smooth check-in. The front desk was lovely but slightly dim, making it hard to see for seniors filling out forms. The property is vast; we got lost wandering around trying to find the open-air bath and dining area. Perhaps due to sudden temperature changes, even with socks on, my feet felt cold. The room lighting was excellent but locating the switch (behind the bed) took some effort. Still, surrounded by nature with expansive grounds, the sound of flowing rivers and birdsong made for a relaxing stay. The meals were elaborate and incredibly delicious! On our way back, we bought plenty of bread from the bakery and enjoyed them as lunch on our return train ride aboard Odoriko-go. If possible in future stays, I’d love an option to reserve something like a lunch box at checkout. I hope to visit again during autumn leaves or cherry blossom season for relaxation of both mind and body. Many thanks to all staff members!

    I booked a plan for one night with two meals for just over 30,000 yen per person. Facility The ryokan's grounds are quite spacious, making it enjoyable for those who like to explore. The main facility where you check in is relatively clean, but the accommodation and restaurant buildings feel a bit old. This time, I stayed in a room renovated from an old storehouse, but the room had a slightly damp and unpleasant smell overall. Baths There are two open-air baths, one indoor bath, and two private baths—all of which were satisfying. However, since the baths are spread out across the large property with uneven terrain, it might be challenging for elderly guests with mobility issues even though younger visitors may not have any problems. Considering the price point, I would rate this aspect around 3.8 out of 5. Dinner For dinner this time, I ordered shabu-shabu. The quality of the meat was excellent; however, I was shocked by how unappetizing the rice was—it was unlike anything I've ever tasted before in terms of poor quality—and ended up leaving all of it uneaten. While everything else about dinner was satisfying, it's unfortunate that the rice left such a negative impression. Breakfast I opted for Western-style breakfast and found it generally delicious—especially the bread which stood out as particularly tasty. Overall At around 30,000 yen per person per night including meals, I'd say it's decent value overall. While I expected to enjoy exploring such expansive grounds initially due to their size being an attraction point—it turned out they were almost too vast! This resulted in some inconvenience due to facilities being scattered far apart across sprawling areas within property boundaries itself . Ultimately ,this accommodation has both notable advantages alongside drawbacks depending upon individual preferences or needs .

    Although it is a bit far from Osaka, the accessibility has improved with the Shin-Tomei Expressway. It would be even better if the roads further into Izu were smoother. I had a relaxing time. While I understand that serving kinmedai (golden eye snapper) is a must in Izu, I would love to try other dishes as well.
