    We would love to stay here again.

    I stayed in the Hikari (134) Room (Detached Villa Suite with Open-Air Onsen Bath (Japanese-Western Style)). In addition to its very spacious layout, the amenities were excellent—for example, there were plenty of power outlets throughout, and in addition to yukata, samue and pajamas were also provided. Everything was very convenient, and I was able to enjoy a completely stress-free holiday. The bath and meals were also very satisfying, and the staff’s thoughtful hospitality at every point—front desk, dining, lounge, and more—was outstanding. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    A Relaxing Accommodation

    This was an Accommodation I had wanted to stay at for a long time, and it exceeded my expectations. We arrived early, had a light lunch at the bakery footbath café, and even though it was well before check-in time, we were shown to our Room. That thoughtfulness made me very happy. The grounds are spacious, so you can stroll around and explore. The lounge offers complimentary drinks and can be used even after check-out, so you can relax at your leisure. The Room was large and spotless, with excellent amenities. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the staff were extremely courteous. The Western-style breakfast seems especially popular; I could only get a late time slot, so I wish I had made a Reservation earlier. Any leftover bread can be taken home. There are also yukata and samue to choose from, but I appreciated having pajamas for sleeping. There was a basket for women’s items as well, which was convenient when going to the baths or meals. The only disappointment was that the zori sandals in the Room hurt my feet—I would have preferred slippers as well. Other than that, everything was perfect; all staff members greeted us properly whenever we passed them, which felt wonderful. I would love to stay again in a different season and in a different Room.

    My first trip with a friend, just the two of us.

    Three years ago, I visited Tofuya for the first time with my husband. This time, as a two-person trip with my 80-year-old friend, we chose Tofuya with the cuisine, Onsen, and hospitality in mind. The evening firefly-viewing event was truly moving—I saw so many fireflies for the first time in my life. My friend said it was the best or second-best Accommodation she has ever stayed at, and she was very happy, which made me happy too. She also said she would like to come again in early autumn with her daughter and son-in-law. I would love to visit again as well so I can show my husband the fireflies. Thank you very much.

    An Unwelcoming Accommodation

    This was my second stay, and personally I got the impression that the Accommodation may be cutting costs. It felt like there were fewer staff, and they may not have had much capacity. First, when I arrived, no one noticed me. Even after ringing the bell, I was met with “Do you need something?” While thinking they might be busy, I received a brief explanation and was told dinner was basically only available from 19:40. Even though I checked in before 15:00, it was already fully booked. They did give reasons, but honestly it included explanations that didn’t matter to me—such as kitchen matters and staff shift-change timing (along with excuses that really didn’t matter). In the end they said they would adjust it. They ultimately moved it to 17:30, but at that point my day was already ruined. Also in Taishokan, there were constantly no snacks available, and used glasses were not being cleared away. The return table didn’t even have space to place empty glasses anymore. This made me strongly feel again that they are short-staffed, which was disappointing as well. By chance I passed a group of four being guided inside (two of them seemed to be borrowing wheelchairs), but there was only one female staff member with them, and the guests themselves were handling moving the wheelchairs on the stairs. I ended up asking if I could help; however, during escorting guests to their Room(s), staffing should be arranged so proper assistance can be provided. For dinner we chose kaiseki, but it was extremely small in portion—even my 75-year-old mother felt it wasn’t enough. On my previous visit we had the shabu-shabu course and were very satisfied with both quality and quantity; however, the kaiseki is truly a miss (it may have been better in the past). It matched what other low Review(s) have said. Because of how this put me mentally, even when using the Onsen all I could notice was that cleaning wasn’t thorough—and that feeling never went away. Honestly, I think it’s an Accommodation worth trying once; however for those who don’t want to risk any disappointment after paying money for a stay: about 2 km past Tofuya Resort there is an Onsen Accommodation called Sagisawakan in a similar price range, which I recommend instead. I’ve stayed there five or six times and have always been highly satisfied.

    We stayed for a Multiple Night Stay, and they changed the meals each day. Everything was delicious and everyone was very satisfied. Some areas of the building feel a bit old, but that added to the calm atmosphere and made it very comfortable. Everything was thoroughly cleaned, making for a pleasant stay. I wish dinner time could be decided in advance rather than at check-in. It would also be helpful if the process for replenishing amenities when housekeeping is not needed were explained more clearly. Everyone rated this Accommodation highly and said they want to come again in autumn. Thank you for taking care of us. Thank you very much.

    It was a wonderful Accommodation with attentive, thoughtful service.

    The detached Room, the Onsen, and the cuisine were all wonderful, but what truly moved me was the thoughtful attention to detail throughout. Even when using the lounge before dinner, the staff were kind, and during our morning walk around the grounds they even lent us walking sticks and shoes. We could choose our yukata, and there was a small bag that was perfect for going to the Onsen. The Room was generously stocked with beer, snacks, coffee, and more—I never had a moment to feel dissatisfied. I was genuinely surprised by how much you provided. My parents were very pleased as well, and it became a truly lovely stay. I hope you will continue to maintain this exceptional service that is unique to a Japanese Ryokan. Thank you very much.

    An Accommodation with furnishings reminiscent of an imperial villa

    I was amazed by the vast grounds, with so many buildings and a large lawn garden. I heard it’s about 40,000 tsubo. Each building preserves its classic charm while maintaining a high level of quality, and I was able to relax at my own pace while enjoying the sound of the river flowing nearby. I also appreciated the complimentary drinks in the lounge, where fine furnishings were tastefully displayed. The meals were excellent, and you could really feel the chef’s attention to detail. There was also a footbath on the property and even a bakery—so exciting. I’d love to visit again and again in different seasons.

    I was hoping for a quiet stay, but…

    The Room was advertised as a riverside guest room with an open-air bath, but in reality the river could not be seen from the Room—only shrubs—so it felt underwhelming. Also, the moment I entered the Room, I noticed a musty smell, which was very disappointing. I stayed for two nights hoping to spend the middle day quietly, but an event was being held in the plaza in front of my Room, with very loud music blasting from speakers, making that day extremely disappointing. Is a noisy event really necessary at a quiet mountain resort? It made me question the resort’s concept. A few months ago I stayed at another property in the same group, Izu Hotel Resort & Spa, and my impression was that Izu Hotel was superior in terms of views, Rooms, food, and overall atmosphere.

    A renowned hot spring Ryokan where you can fully enjoy the nature and history of a mountain village.

    This was my first visit, and I truly enjoyed the mountain village scenery and the Yoshina Onsen. Since we arrived on an early Shuttle Service bus, we explored the grounds with the property map until our Room was ready. After strolling along the Yoshina River that runs through the garden and visiting the small hilltop “Oman Sakura Terrace,” the “Tofuya Umeshu” on the rocks we had in the Taisho-kan Lounge was outstanding. The classical design here is beautiful, and with a Taisho-era style café as well, it feels like a place where you could happily spend hours. At the on-site “Tofuya Museum,” we also learned fascinating history through exhibits about Lady Oman, a concubine of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and O-Kichi. The Onsen water felt wonderfully gentle on the skin, making it easy to soak for a long time and leaving us feeling its benefits. We enjoyed five baths in total: “Ban-no-Yu” and “Gyoki-no-Yu” (open-air) on day one; “Kawazu-no-Yu” and “Taki-no-Yu” on day two; plus our in-Room semi-open-air bath. With so many baths—and many Rooms with private Onsen—it often felt like we had them almost entirely to ourselves, which made for a truly luxurious experience. Both dinner and breakfast were filled with Izu’s bounty—more than enough for us in our 70s, yet still an excellent volume that younger guests would also find satisfying. Because historic buildings are connected throughout, some corridors are a bit winding; however, signage is clear and thoughtful, so getting to the baths at either end of the property was never confusing. Even without visiting multiple tourist spots, simply walking around these grounds makes you feel as if you’ve taken a complete trip. All staff members—including younger team members—were consistently courteous, making our stay very comfortable. Since each Room seems to have its own character, I would love to return to find one that suits my preferences. I’m sure it must be wonderful during autumn foliage season as well.

    The best accommodation for a relaxing stay

    This was our third stay, and we’re always completely satisfied with this Accommodation. Due to a sudden illness, I couldn’t eat dinner, but the next morning they kindly served the meat simmered, which truly moved me. They also gave me salted rice balls and pickles. Each staff member checked on my condition, and I thought that was wonderful. We were also touched to receive a congratulatory message for our pearl wedding anniversary! We had completely forgotten about it as a couple, so it helped us realize it. Thank you very much. This time, we used a Room with a private Onsen for the first time, and it was excellent. We didn’t go anywhere except the bath in our Room! It’s an Accommodation we definitely want to visit again. We look forward to staying again next time!

    My family stayed in ...

    My family stayed in the kura Room. Since it was winter, the lower floor felt a bit drafty and the heating wasn’t very strong, but overall it was excellent, with a retro atmosphere and well-maintained Facilities and amenities. Our children especially loved the kura vibe. However, one side of the stairs has no wall, so it may be dangerous if you are traveling with small children. The meal was a shabu-shabu course. It was tasty, but if you’re looking for something more distinctive to Tofuya, another course might be better. The venue also felt like a small banquet hall, which may have added to that impression. The lounge service and baths were wonderful as well—overall we were very satisfied.

    Enjoy Izu’s Fresh Greenery

    I couldn’t forget the memories of enjoying the Onsen and meals while looking up at the swaying wisteria last year, so I came back again. Perhaps because it was just before Golden Week, everywhere was quiet, and it was a comfortable trip where I could do everything I wanted. I was amazed by how delicious the Japanese breakfast was last year, and this time dinner was also kaiseki—enjoyable not only for the flavors but also for the beautiful tableware and presentation. I especially like the indoor bath in the Onsen. Many guests seem to use the in-room bath or open-air baths, so it always felt private whenever I went in, and I could warm up slowly while looking out at the fresh green mountains. Next time, I’d like to visit in autumn. Thank you for your warm hospitality.

    We were satisfied with everything, including the Facility, the Onsen, the cuisine, and the hospitality.

    This was my first stay here. The beautiful Facility is spacious with plenty to see, and I’m glad we chose to stay for two nights. There are three Onsen baths to enjoy, the meals were delicious, and we were able to relax and take in the wonderful view from our Room. We also appreciate the staff’s hospitality. We would love to stay again.

    We’ll be back!

    I have stayed here many times, and this time I invited my elderly parents. They were truly delighted with your exceptional hospitality and the relaxing atmosphere and services. Thank you again for taking such great care of us. The fresh greenery was beautiful, and the wisteria trellis at the footbath café had just started to bloom, so it was perfect timing for our visit. Everything was extremely clean and comfortable, including the bathrooms, and each time we are impressed by the staff’s thoughtful yet unobtrusive attention. In particular, the décor that reflects history and culture, along with the fresh flowers and fragrance throughout, is very soothing. The meals are delicious; however, dinner portions are a little too large for us, so we would appreciate having some options to choose from. Also, since we were in Izu, it would be even more wonderful if local ingredients such as Izu wasabi or game meat could be incorporated. In any case, it is always incredibly relaxing no matter when we visit. We will definitely return—my parents would like to come back as well. Thank you very much.

    A place where you can truly relax and recharge, but...

    This is an Accommodation I visited many times with my late mother. I stay here as a personal treat while retracing those memories. This time as well, I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious meals and a stroll through the beautifully maintained gardens. It reminds me how happy I am to be able to relax and unwind at such a leisurely pace. I’m also very grateful that Shuttle Service from Shuzenji Station is now available. However, this time there were a few disappointing moments at Mizuoto, where we dine. The explanations of the dishes were hesitant or sometimes incorrect, and there was quite a long wait between being served drinks and receiving the appetizers. It also felt like there was no room to even exchange a few words with solo travelers, creating an atmosphere where I had to hold back from casual conversation. Even after staying two nights, my face and name didn’t seem to be remembered, and at breakfast on the third day an identical menu to the previous day was brought out; it wasn’t changed until I pointed out that it seemed different (the staff member in charge said, “I thought so too.” If they noticed, I wish they had acted sooner). I understand you must be extremely busy, and perhaps some staff members are still new in their roles. I could tell everyone was doing their best, so I truly hope you will continue striving as staff of Tofuya Resort & Spa—an Accommodation known for its high level of hospitality. And if I may add one more selfish request: while it’s comforting to encounter flavors that remind me of meals shared with my mother, I did feel the menu has become somewhat repetitive. In any case, this is an Accommodation close to my heart—high quality and one of my absolute favorites. I would love to stay again.

    The location is excellent.

    All staff you meet on the premises will welcome you warmly and make you feel at ease. The proprietress was truly impressive, and I felt honored to have met her.     I stayed here for th...

    I stayed here for the first time in about 40 years. My grandchild and I really enjoyed the Onsen and walking around the area. For breakfast, we chose the American breakfast. Everything was delicious, and we were very satisfied with the service. The only disappointment was the simmered splendid alfonsino at dinner—it was cold. It took over an hour from the appetizer and sashimi to the alfonsino being served. The flavor was good, which made it even more disappointing. I mentioned that it was cold, but there was no response from the staff. Next time, I would like to stay with my daughter’s whole family, but dinner is my only concern.

    It was amazing!

    This was a Facility I had long dreamed of visiting, and it exceeded my expectations!! Not only were the indoor bath and open-air bath wonderful, but the bath in our Room also let us enjoy an open-air bathing atmosphere, which was great. Free drinks in the refrigerator and free drinks in the lounge—everything was so thoughtfully provided. I was especially surprised that both included complimentary alcohol. The meals were delicious as well, and we were extremely satisfied. Thank you very much!!

    High satisfaction overall, but the dinner was questionable.

    This was my third visit. This time I stayed for two nights and three days and was able to relax at a leisurely pace. The warm smiles and friendly greetings from the staff were comforting, and the Onsen and other Facility areas were well maintained and pleasant as always—overall, it remains a highly satisfying Ryokan. However, this time I was disappointed by the decline in both the quality of the food and the service in the dining area. There was nothing surprising about the cooking methods, and the seasoning felt muted. The service was also far from attentive. What happened...? I hope for improvement next time.

    First visit in nine years

    I have visited other properties in this group, such as Akakura Kanko Hotel and Izu Hotel, several times, but it has been a full nine years since my last stay at Tofuya; 　 The greatest appeal here is the vast grounds and the many Onsen bathing areas. However, because getting around takes time, I had stayed away during seasons with harsh cold or heat, as the travel between facilities can feel like a burden; 　 This time as well, there was a late cold spell and even a snow forecast right before our visit, which made me nervous. Thankfully, we were able to arrive safely and I was relieved. That said, walking to Taishokan, the café, and the dining venue was extremely cold—so a down jacket plus the in-room padded robe (tanzen) or a coat was a MUST; (I would have liked a long, warm tanzen for women as well. The women’s coat was heavy but not warm, and the fabric did not feel very nice.) 　 This time I chose the Main Building—specifically one of the newest Rooms—considering the distance to the dining venue. The open-air bath in the Room felt more spacious than in my previous stay and had a wonderful sense of openness. The Onsen temperature was perfectly balanced; no matter how many times I soaked, it remained exceptionally comfortable. However—as I already knew before staying—it was still very inconvenient that the bath area and shower room are separated. Also unavoidable perhaps, but the washbasin area was very small and difficult to use. 　 Other than that, everything—from plentiful bath towels to amenities—was thoughtfully prepared down to small details, allowing me to fully enjoy a high-quality stay. If you ever consider replacing furniture in the future, I would greatly appreciate it if you could switch at least the floor chairs in the tatami Room to higher chairs (e.g., legged zaisu), for better seating comfort and ease of standing up. 　 As for meals: I usually choose an early dining time wherever I stay. This time it ended up being late due to an assigned Plan schedule at first took me by surprise; however, it allowed me to relax with reading at Taishokan first. After that—and also to warm up—I enjoyed multiple Onsen baths so that my body could settle before dinner; in hindsight this may have been even better. 　 For breakfast, I requested Western-style breakfast from 9:00 at Reservation time. It made me very happy to enjoy an elegant and delicious breakfast at Kanemotoro on Taishokan’s 2nd floor—a space that is normally off-limits. The freshly baked bread from your bakery was delicious as always; we were also allowed take home what we couldn’t finish. 　 Finally regarding allergy ingredients: please ensure thorough communication across all staff members so this does not happen again.

    Second stay

    I stayed here last November with my parents and found it so comfortable that this time I returned with my two daughters. The amenities, the drinks provided in the Room, and the flowers displayed on the vanity and shelves—thoughtful touches throughout the Accommodation—made our stay just as pleasant and relaxing. The staff were courteous, dinner and breakfast were excellent, and we were able to unwind in the bath for a truly blissful time. Both stays were in a Room in the main building, so next time I’d like to make a Reservation for a different type of Room and visit again.

    For your wedding anniversary

    We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. The Accommodation had a wonderful atmosphere, the meals were delicious, and all the staff were kind—it was truly excellent. The semi-open-air bath in our Room was especially relaxing, and I used it five times during our stay. Our children have grown up and we couldn’t coordinate schedules, so this was our first trip as a couple in a long time. Thanks to Tofuya, it became the best anniversary. We would love to stay again—next time with the whole family.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    Thanks to the staff’s warm hospitality, the comfortable Room, delicious meals, and the relaxing bath where we could truly unwind, we were able to enjoy another restful stay. Last month, we also visited your affiliated Izu Resort & Spa. Including Akakura Kanko Hotel, we stay at each Accommodation every year. It always meets our expectations and is an Accommodation that makes us want to return again.

    The Onsen facilities...

    The Onsen facilities were excellent—the large public bath, the private bath, and the open-air bath in the Room. The spa had a wonderful atmosphere, and the oils and fragrances were refined; it was deeply relaxing both physically and mentally. The dishes were carefully explained to us, and both the golden eye snapper and the meat were delicious. Because the grounds are spacious, getting around was a bit of a challenge, but it was very comfortable in such a quiet setting. We would love to stay again.

    The bath and the Roo...

    The bath and the Room were clean, and we were able to relax. The staff provided courteous service, and we were very satisfied. The shabu-shabu portion felt a little large, but it was delicious.

    It was a wonderful accommodation, highlighted by its excellent onsen and outstanding service.

    This was my first stay here, and overall it was extremely satisfying. I especially appreciated that two types of tabi socks were provided—being able to choose based on preference showed thoughtful attention to detail. The staff were consistently courteous, which made the stay very comfortable. The baths were truly outstanding, and the biggest highlight was being able to enjoy multiple bath areas. In particular, Gyoki-no-Yu had wonderful water quality and atmosphere—I ended up going in many times. It was also very helpful that bath towels and face towels were available at every bath area, and I liked being able to choose between two types of shampoo amenities (the original amenities or MIKIMOTO), which added a luxurious touch. I didn’t use it this time, but I also think the trekking shoe rental is a great service. That said, there were a few points I’d like to see improved. Most notably, some bath areas (such as Kodakara-no-Yu) do not have handrails. This makes them difficult—and potentially unsafe—for older guests or anyone with weaker legs or knees. I would appreciate handrails being installed as soon as possible for safety. Also, the paper cups in the bathing area are very small, so it was a bit inconvenient having to refill several times when drinking water. As for hair dryers, having higher-performance options (such as Dyson, ReFa, or Repironizer) would further improve satisfaction. Regarding the lounge, I would love for it to stay open later at night—even without alcohol—so guests can relax with tea or coffee in the evening. Also, the current pre-made coffee wasn’t very good; having at least a coffee machine would be much appreciated. In the baths, Kajika-no-Yu felt quite lukewarm; in colder seasons it may be tough when using the washing area. It would help if temperatures could be adjusted according to the season. For breakfast, I missed having fresh vegetables (such as a salad). Adding one more vegetable dish would make it feel more balanced. Overall, both the excellent Onsen facilities and the warmth of your staff were truly wonderful—this is an Accommodation I’d like to visit again. If these few improvements are addressed, it could become even closer to perfect. Thank you very much for your lovely hospitality!

    We had a very comfortable stay.

    It was the first time in a while that we were able to stay at a truly wonderful Accommodation. The Room was spacious, and the view from the window was great, so we were able to relax and stay very comfortably. For us, meals are the most important part of traveling, and everything was very delicious. The shabu-shabu was especially excellent. The service was wonderful, and the baths were great as well. (We especially loved the bath in our Room!) Although it is an older building, that sense of age added to its charm, and it felt very clean and well maintained. The grounds also had a nostalgic atmosphere, and it was really fun just walking around. It was an outstanding Accommodation. Precisely because it was so good, there were a few disappointing points... - We couldn’t choose our breakfast time (We actually wanted Japanese breakfast, but we were told that the Japanese option only had availability from 9:00. We felt 9:00 was simply too late, so we chose the Western breakfast from 8:00 instead. What criteria determines which times can be selected?) - The shower position in the large public bath area is too high; when sitting on the stool, the water doesn’t reach properly, so we ended up having to stand. Maybe this can’t be helped due to how it’s built... Even with those points included, it really is a wonderful Accommodation, and we would love to visit again if we have another opportunity.     I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve stayed here. For the past three years I’d been too busy elsewhere and hadn’t visited, but coming back after a long time reminded me how wonderful it is—so calming. I love everything about this place, to the point that it’s hard to say exactly what. Until now I came simply to relax, but this year I also went to see the Kawazu cherry blossoms and did a bit of sightseeing. I was also able to make a return visit in gratitude for my daughter’s blessing from three years ago. Next time, I’d like to plan a stay with my grandchild as well.

    Dining Area Lighting

    This is an excellent Accommodation. The meals are delicately flavored and very delicious, and all the staff are kind, providing pleasant service. One thing I would say is that the lighting during dinner could be a bit brighter. I will definitely come again.
