Fun for both kids and adults

With plenty of leisure Facilities such as Aqua Beat, Aqua Garden, and Tanayu, and with many staff members providing cheerful and enjoyable service, the buffet offered a wide variety of dishes and left us completely satisfied. This is a Hotel where you can have fun together rather than just relax—it almost feels like one night and two days isn’t enough.

    Beppu Trip

My first stay at Sorakan. The first thing I loved was the welcome drinks. From 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, soft drinks, light sweets, and beer are all-you-can-drink. The Hotel is also very clean. The open-air Onsen bath was amazing too. The view is so relaxing. I also appreciated that there are smoking areas set up in several places. Sorakan’s dinner buffet was luxurious and delicious. For the all-you-can-drink options, you can even enjoy branded shochu and Dassai sake. With a short walk, you can also use Tanayu, and have fun at the pool as well. Not just Onsen—there’s also a game arcade, bowling, and karaoke to fully enjoy your time here. Just one thing... Even though it’s such a wonderful Hotel, the shampoo and conditioner weren’t great and left my hair dry and frizzy... It would be perfect if they provided better shampoo. Still, I’d like to stay at Sorakan again.

It was a wonderful birthday trip for my wife.

We stayed in March last time, and this time we stayed again in August for my wife’s birthday. Our 4-year-old daughter fell in love with Suginoi Hotel during our previous stay, so this time we chose the seasonal Aqua Beat (pool) and stayed in the same building, Nijikan, as before. She was thrilled with Aqua Beat. It was crowded because of summer vacation, but we still had plenty of fun. The Facility and meals were also very satisfying. If I could ask for one thing, I’d be happy if raw eggs were available as well as Onsen eggs (I love rice with egg). We’ll most likely stay again for our daughter’s birthday trip next time. The cost is not cheap, but it makes for the best trip for our family (especially our daughter). When she gets older, we’d like to stay in a different building instead of Nijikan.

    It was family-friendly.

If you have children, you can enjoy yourself all day. For seniors, meals are important, but they felt a bit disappointing. The buffet gets very crowded, so you can’t eat right away. The food was average; the desserts were the best. The baths were nice. The views are very good.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, which made me feel at ease.

Although it is a very large Hotel, the staff were excellent. There was no need to line up when asking questions, and it felt like there were enough staff on duty. The large public bath was very crowded, but staff were stationed there and cleaning constantly, so it never felt dirty. On the other hand, I made a Reservation for a Room in the Rainbow Wing, and it was a maisonette layout. I slept upstairs where the futon was, but noise from above carried badly and was very loud—probably footsteps. The dining area was extremely crowded, and there were wait times for both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast had only a small selection of bread; I wish I had booked without breakfast. Rather than being especially delicious, it felt like the main point was simply having many options to choose from. The buses from Beppu Station (a few per hour) are not very large, so they filled up and we couldn’t board. A taxi from Beppu Station cost 1,600 yen. There is a pool, a large public bath, an arcade/game center, and buffet meals—kids will enjoy it—but with so many people around, adults who want a quiet break may find overall satisfaction lower.

    Satisfied.

This was our first stay in the Hoshikan building on a family trip of four, including two elementary school children. We had previously stayed twice in the Sorakan Deluxe, and this time Hoshikan was also excellent. We had a Reservation for a standard mountain-side Room, but there seemed to be availability, so we were kindly upgraded for a small additional fee and were able to stay in a larger ocean-side Room, which we really appreciated. The dinner buffet was great—sushi and sashimi were delicious, and even the shiitake mushrooms were thick and flavorful. Also, the kabosu citrus manju-style dessert was unexpectedly good, so I went back for seconds. Overall there seemed to be fewer items than the Sorakan buffet, but my personal satisfaction was higher here. As for location, it is a bit far from Aqua Beat and Sora-yu, but getting around isn’t just moving from place to place—you pass through souvenir shops and other areas that add excitement, which I think is part of what makes Suginoi Hotel special—so the distance didn’t bother us much. On this trip we stayed at four different hotels including Suginoi Hotel. With so many guest rooms there will naturally be many types of guests and opinions will vary, but personally it was far better than another hotel we stayed at with an average Review score of 4.7 or higher. Thank you very much.

    A Vast Park

I stayed at Hoshikan for one night. The grounds are vast, so after the pool I checked in and enjoyed the Tanayu baths. The baths are large, and there was a fireworks festival on the ocean side that day, which I could enjoy from the bath. I also dined at Hoshikan, with mainly Japanese cuisine—sushi, sashimi, and Oita specialties. One thing I noticed was that the sashimi portions were small and thin, which felt a bit unsatisfying for an adult man, and the shrimp was boiled. The pudding was delicious. Since Hoshikan does not have its own baths and the property is so expansive, it was quite a trek from my Room to the baths, so I only went once—which I regret. Next time I’d like to stay at Sorakan.

There should be limits to dynamic pricing. Charging over ¥70,000 is outrageously expensive.

There should be limits to dynamic pricing. I felt no value at all in paying over JPY 70,000. For the Hoshikan Standard Western-style room (ocean side) with dinner and breakfast included, the Accommodation Fee was over JPY 70,000. To be frank, I feel a fair price for this stay would be around JPY 30,000–35,000 for a family of three. I understand this is a large-scale Accommodation with a pool, Onsen, and buffet. However, considering the guest room, meals, crowding inside the building, and service overall, the quality did not justify a price exceeding JPY 70,000. I do not oppose dynamic pricing itself—adjusting Accommodation Fees based on peak periods and demand. But if prices are raised far beyond the value provided simply because there is demand, guests will not think “It was expensive but fun.” They will conclude “It was completely overpriced. I’ll never come again.” In fact, staying at JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Oita for around JPY 15,000 and using the remaining budget to enjoy high-end sushi with my family would have been far more satisfying for both lodging and dining—and still cheaper than what we paid this time. I am not angry just because it was expensive. I am upset because there was no value commensurate with what we paid. If you continue pricing based on “Because it’s Suginoi Hotel (Hotel), guests will come even at this price,” you may generate revenue in the short term but will inevitably drive customers away in the long term. At least for me: given this price and what was offered, I will never use it again. It was such an unsatisfying stay relative to what we paid that I honestly feel like asking for a refund.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We stayed for two relaxing nights. The food at the Hoshi Buffet was in a wonderful atmosphere, and everything was absolutely delicious. One suggestion for improvement: it would be appreciated if the men’s bath could also be equipped with baby amenities and a chair, just like the women’s bath.

    First Star House

Although I live in the prefecture, this is a Hotel I want to visit again. It was my first time staying after the new Hoshi Building opened! Now I’ve tried them all, lol. The Hoshi Building has a strong Japanese atmosphere, and the buffet offers lots of Japanese dishes. If you enjoy alcohol, I recommend the Hoshi Building! Personally, I like the Sora Building best. If Aqua Beat is your main purpose, the Niji Building is very convenient. Since there is no Onsen in the Hoshi Building, getting to it can be a bit of a hassle. The best thing about Suginoi Hotel is how wonderful the staff are! From reception before check-in to everything at the front desk, they explain things carefully and politely. The buffet staff were all smiling as well. When a child at another table spilled food, they cleaned it up immediately and even brought out a fresh replacement—an excellent response. It really warmed my heart. That pleasant service makes me want to come back again and again. However, for some reason only the Tanayu staff were not great. While carrying a basket of wet towels they muttered loudly like, “Ugh! This is so heavy! I can’t carry this!”—their inner thoughts completely spilling out. I watched while changing clothes thinking they could have just removed some towels first before lifting it... When I asked Tanayu staff about something I had left behind, they simply said there was no such lost item and told me—annoyed—to ask at the front desk when checking out tomorrow. It made me feel that only the women’s bath staff at Tanayu lacked quality. The next day when I checked with the front desk, they handled it politely even though it was a busy time. Even with that experience, this is an outstanding Hotel that deserves full marks!

Good for families, but somewhat challenging for elderly guests.

Since Beppu Onsen is not a walkable hot-spring town, Suginoi Hotel offers extensive in-house Facilities and is great if you plan to spend your time within the Hotel. However, for elderly guests with limited mobility, it may feel less relaxing, as moving around inside the Hotel involves a lot of walking and can make getting to meals or the baths feel tiring.

    A Moment of Relaxation

I wasn’t feeling very well because of the unfortunate rain, but once I arrived at the Hotel, it turned into a relaxing experience. I went to the Tanayu early and enjoyed a long soak in the Onsen. Towels and bath towels are provided at the entrance, so you can go empty-handed. By the time I was properly hungry, dinner was a buffet with all-you-can-drink alcohol and soft drinks. The snacks—almonds, crackers, and cheese—were all delicious. After that came the main dishes: sushi, sashimi, Western-style steak, and about four kinds of meat, so it was hard to choose. To finish, I had fruit, cake, and coffee—completely satisfied. One thing I’ve thought for a while: yukata are nice, but it would be great if there were options like samue as well—they’re easier to move around in. The front desk staff were also very polite and kind in their words. It was a truly soothing day. Thank you very much. I’ll work hard again and come back to relax here.

    Aqua Beat

I have stayed at Suginoi Hotel many times, but I had never been to Aqua Beat.\nThis time, I brought a swimsuit and went. The waves are artificial, but they rose just like ocean waves—wonderful.\nFor dinner, I enjoyed a yakiniku course in a private room. Everything was delicious.

A Hotel suitable for families with children

My friends and I, all in our 60s, stayed here on a trip, but this Hotel seems better suited for family travel with children. It may not be the best fit for guests in their 60s.

    One night nearby.

I had a Reservation at Nijikan, and I was lucky to be able to upgrade to Sorakan for 1,000 yen. The Onsen was excellent—the large public bath at Sorakan was clean and wonderful. In the past, meals were a buffet twice a day (breakfast and dinner), but this time we enjoyed the Ariran yakiniku course for dinner, which was also great. We watched Prime Video in the Room and were able to relax with a friend nearby whom I hadn’t seen in a while. Thank you very much.

The view from the Room was wonderful, and the terraced baths with an ocean view were amazing. The in-house Facility was more than adequate, and we felt it was ideal for families. The food was delicious, but the buffet area was quite noisy—perhaps due to the many international guests—so it may be a bit challenging for older couples like us... Despite being a large Hotel, the staff service was excellent, and we would consider returning with our grandchildren.

I won’t be using this again.

First stay in about 10 years. Last time was so impressive that I was really looking forward to this visit. When I arrived at the Hotel and asked a young staff member about the parking lot, I was directed without any friendliness. Then, upon entering the Hotel, there were an unbelievable number—around 50—of loud foreign guests (Asian)… The dinner buffet that impressed me last time felt just average this time. What’s more, while I was waiting to get mochi, the staff chatted among themselves right in front of me and ignored me… then finally made eye contact and casually said, “Want some mochi?” What kind of service is that—like a family restaurant? I was also looking forward to the Onsen, but there was a sign at the entrance saying tattoos are not allowed. If so, please clearly state that from the beginning in your information. Otherwise I would book a different Ryokan with private open-air baths. However, foreign guests were openly using the bath with tattoos visible. Even so, I tried to be considerate and covered both shoulders with a towel when entering, but it seems about 1 cm may have been showing, and a staff member told me to “please leave.” Huh? Then what about those foreign guests? And on top of that they charged an Onsen fee of 500 yen. This Hotel has become far below expectations in every way.

I always look forward to the meals and the baths.

I’ve stayed in the Rainbow Wing and Star Wing as well, but considering access to the baths, I chose the Sky Wing again for my second stay. Although it’s buffet-style dining, the quality and variety are always appealing. Personally, I’m happy about the all-you-can-eat Häagen-Dazs and the mochi at breakfast. Alcohol is also free, and I was surprised they even had freshly squeezed mandarin orange juice! There was only one coffee machine—if there were more or if it offered higher-quality options, it would be perfect. The Onsen had a slightly sulfur-like scent, and I enjoyed it three times. A water dispenser was installed in the Room. I hope Rooms with a private bath will be available someday. I’ll visit again.

The dining area is far away...

My first stay at Suginoi Hotel. I stayed in the Sora Building with my child. It’s a perfect Hotel for families and guests with young children. The large public bath was also excellent. The only disappointment was that even though we stayed in the Sora Building, we were assigned Cedar Palace, which is extremely far away, instead of the restaurant on the first floor. It was very difficult to walk such a long distance after surgery two weeks earlier. I considered mentioning it at the front desk, but decided not to. If dining had been at a restaurant in the same building as our Accommodation, it would have been perfect.

    Spa The Cedar

About 10 years ago, I used Spa the Ceada and it was excellent, so this time I booked the Bliss Course oil treatment expecting another wonderful experience. However, it was not a private room or a pleasant space like before; there were about seven treatment beds separated by curtains, and it felt far from relaxing. The treatment itself was terrible—so uncomfortable that I wondered if the therapist was untrained. Even the head massage felt rough enough to make me worry about damaging my hair. The Onsen and meals were good, but I had hoped to be healed at Spa the Ceada and ended up deeply disappointed. It is especially disappointing because Suginoi Hotel has been newly renovated.

We were truly impressed by this wonderful Hotel. We stayed for one night to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday, and by chance our Room was upgraded, so we were able to stay in a lovely Room! It’s a spacious, clean, and beautiful Hotel; the staff were excellent, and the meals were absolutely delicious. We ate so much that we had to give up on some desserts we wanted to try, so we’d love to come back for another attempt! Next time, we’d like to book a Multiple Night Stay and visit with our children and grandchildren. Thank you very much for a wonderful time.

    Even better than expected...

My friend and I stayed at “Hoshikan.” It was our first visit, and we were amazed by the vast grounds, the many large buildings, and even multiple parking areas—surprise after surprise. Although buffet-style dining isn’t usually my favorite, everything was delicious and the staff operation was excellent. It was impressive to see how smoothly they guided so many guests and served meals. At breakfast, when I accidentally spilled miso soup at our table, a staff member immediately brought me a fresh yukata to change into. I truly appreciated their attentive service. The only downside was that it’s quite a walk to reach Tanayu, and along the way there are two points where you have to go outside (there is a roof), which was very tough in strong winds while wearing a yukata. I also felt that distance could be challenging for older guests. I wish there had been a more detailed explanation at check-in.

About the staff at Cedar Palace

The bath was amazing. Even if the weather is bad, it was great that you can go bowling, there are plenty of amusement facilities, and there is a convenience store. I would like to come again if I have the chance. What concerned me) I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Cedar Palace, and the food was delicious, so I was having a very pleasant time, but I was very disappointed with how some staff members responded. Since it is a buffet, I handed a staff member some dirty plates saying, “Excuse me,” but they glared at me in silence and reluctantly took them away. I mistakenly thought they were collecting dirty dishes with a cart, but later I realized that staff member was probably in charge of refilling items, and that cart was for transporting refill supplies—so maybe my dirty plates forced them to stop their work. However, as guests we cannot tell which staff are responsible for clearing dishes and which are responsible for refills, and we also do not know whether Japanese will be understood. Ignoring someone and glaring is not appropriate. In hindsight, it would have been better if there had been signage on the cart indicating it was not for clearing dishes, or if the Hotel had made roles easier to identify—for example by using different uniforms—since there are many staff members. I normally do not write things like this, but because Cedar Palace was so wonderful overall, this incident made me feel quite upset mentally and even lose my appetite, so I wanted to mention it.

    I’m a returning guest.

As soon as I checked in and entered the Room, I found a used hair tie on the bar counter... There was also noticeable dirt on the mirror in the wash area, which made me feel the final inspection was not thorough. Since it was a three-day weekend and the price was fairly high, this was disappointing given how highly rated the meals and Onsen are.
