    It was just as the reviews said...

    The location and atmosphere of the accommodation were lovely, making it a candidate for our stay. However, after reading reviews that frequently mentioned the food was subpar, I hesitated but decided to experience it myself and booked a stay. As a result, the food indeed lacked flavor and depth, leaving us disappointed. For an accommodation costing nearly 100,000 yen for two people, such taste was truly disheartening. The dinner menu mentioned "prepared by all kitchen staff," which made me wonder if there was no head chef or someone responsible for overseeing the quality. Additionally, the valuables box in the public bath area was as large as an in-room safe but had small instructions that were hard to read. Ultimately, we chose not to use the public bath. While the building is impressive and the location excellent, we were let down by what’s inside this accommodation.

    The Best Time

    Check-in at 1:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM allowed us to fully enjoy a truly wonderful time. The detailed art and various facilities within the Facility made it possible to spend relaxing moments without getting bored. For us, who rarely see snowy landscapes, the snow-covered nature was truly healing. All the staff were polite and had lovely smiles. Everything about this Ryokan is truly wonderful. For an even better experience, if only the hairdryer and amenities could be of slightly higher quality, it would be perfect! We would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much!

    It was my first visit in 13–14 years.

    It was my first visit in 13-14 years. This time, it coincided with the first snowfall, but luckily the weather was clear and sunny, making for two perfect days of snowy scenery. The air was crisp, offering breathtaking views and a wonderful experience in the snow-viewing bath. The staff's attentive hospitality and service were evident everywhere, and compared to my previous visit years ago, the open-air bath and facilities have been updated for an even more luxurious experience. The meals were excellent in taste, variety, and portion size—truly satisfying. With convenient access from Tokyo, this is a top-notch Ryokan I would love to revisit again!

    Everything is excellent.

    Everything, including the facility, meals, and service, was excellent! The room we stayed in had two toilets, which was a first for us and very convenient in the morning. The hot spring water was saline-based and warmed us to the core, and the champagne after bathing was absolutely delicious. We were also impressed by the tasteful arrangements of fresh flowers and decorations in each corner. Thank you very much!

    Simply outstanding.

    The room was spacious, with lovely furnishings and very comfortable. The private bath had soft water and was also spacious. The free drinks offered a surprising variety. The view from the window was slightly disappointing. Both breakfast and dinner were incredibly delicious. Each dish had a rich flavor, perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented, and served on elegant tableware that delighted both the palate and the eyes. All the staff were exceptionally kind and provided warm hospitality, allowing us to relax completely during our stay. There were thoughtful services scattered throughout the garden, including check-in/out drink services and various amenities. For this level of quality, the accommodation cost is an incredible value. I will definitely return again!

    Overall, it was very good. The location and building were excellent. The staff were very pleasant, kind, and attentive. As for the meals, there didn’t seem to be anything particularly outstanding. Regarding the bedding, the duvet cover came off which was inconvenient, and the pillows were folded in half, making them uncomfortable to sleep on.

    Everything was perfect.

    I chose this accommodation because I wanted to spend a day relaxing and I love saunas. Although it was raining during my private sauna session, the staff member who assisted me was incredibly kind and provided exceptional hospitality. I was surprised that the river served as a cold bath, but experiencing entering the river for the first time after a sauna became an unforgettable memory. I would love to visit again in warmer seasons. The room was clean and comfortable. The large public bath and sauna were excellent, so it was a bit disappointing that I couldn't fully enjoy the open-air bath in my room. There were flowers placed throughout the facility, allowing me to feel the season, with plenty of photo-worthy spots available. If it had been sunny, I could have enjoyed strolling through the garden or taking walks; unfortunately, only the weather let me down. Breakfast was delicious and just right in portion size. After checking out, we took many photos thanks to the kind assistance of staff members who left us deeply impressed with their friendliness. This is definitely an accommodation I want to visit again!     Some improvements are needed.

    I have visited high-quality accommodations several times a year, and I stayed here with the expectation that it would be the best accommodation experience so far. To conclude, while the quality is undoubtedly high, considering the expensive price, it did not surpass our past best accommodation experiences. Below are some points of concern: Strengths: - The contrast between meticulously prepared dishes and their presentation was remarkable. - Polite customer service (the drink order service at checkout was particularly impressive). Weaknesses: - The sizes of the provided loungewear were inconsistent. Staff should assess guests' body types to recommend appropriate sizes proactively. Additionally, two sets in different sizes should be available for comfort as ill-fitting loungewear affected wearability negatively. - Doors to both the public bath and private open-air bath were excessively heavy; considering many elderly guests stay here, replacing these doors would be advisable. - The temperature in the public bath was too low to warm up thoroughly, and its lighting was too dim. Furthermore, loose stones scattered on the floor of the open-air bath posed a safety hazard; installing handrails would improve safety significantly. - Neither rooms nor public baths had clocks available—this was inconvenient. Also, some equipment like kettles felt overly modern and difficult to use without instructions provided. - Duvets with holes gave an unhygienic impression. - Slippers for going out into gardens were poorly managed; both indoor slippers and outdoor sandals lacked proper organization or hygiene control—it’s unclear who used them previously. - Pricing for private sauna usage lacked clarity—it seemed like a flat rate per session but turned out to be charged per person instead. Despite being asked multiple times about how many people would use it during booking arrangements (and my own oversight), I ended up being billed for two people unexpectedly due partly due unclear communication regarding costs which exceeded general market standards significantly. While there are several criticisms noted above overall this facility maintains very high standards overall minor improvements could greatly enhance satisfaction levels further!

    Looking forward to next time.

    This was my second stay. In this price range, this accommodation is top-level for me, but it can be difficult to secure a reservation because of its popularity. Here are some points I noticed during this visit: Upon arrival, I happened to follow the shuttle service vehicle into the property. Several staff members came out from inside, and I thought they would assist me, but all of them went straight to the shuttle vehicle and completely ignored me. One staff member eventually approached after being prompted by another staff member who got out of the driver's seat, but he just stood there without saying anything. Later on, I learned that this young male staff in blue workwear was an intern. At dinner time, when I mentioned my room name at check-in for dining arrangements, a cheerful response came back asking if "my companion would join later." I replied with "They will never come," realizing that guest details were not properly managed or understood here. While there were other minor issues as well during my stay—most were promptly addressed (some even by the next morning). However, it’s worth noting that IKYU Diamond benefits had been forgotten until I brought them up myself. During checkout payment processing—when handing over keys—the same blue-uniformed intern froze holding onto one key awkwardly before asking if there was “another key” left behind somewhere else unnecessarily complicating things further! It made me wonder whether something invisible only visible-to-them existed around us? Unfortunately again no souvenir gift part-of-Diamond-benefit unlike last-time either! That said though overall experience remains excellent thanks largely due-to efforts led-by gracious hostess herself alongside foreign-male-staff serving meals attentively plus female-staff guiding guests warmly towards rooms ensuring utmost satisfaction throughout entire duration spent here! Despite personal dietary restrictions/preferences being somewhat challenging initially everything worked-out beautifully allowing full enjoyment savoring delicious cuisine served impeccably every meal including breakfast featuring perfectly grilled crispy-skinned thick salmon fillet which tasted absolutely divine indeed! Naturally private Onsen within-room proved exceptional while public bath facilities felt almost exclusively reserved given low occupancy usage adding extra charm altogether enhancing relaxation further beyond expectations altogether too!     The Perfect Anniversary!

    The confirmation email before our stay was very polite, and from the pick-up to arrival and throughout our stay, the staff's attentiveness and hospitality were exceptional. While there are many accommodations in Tokyo with excellent service, the warmth of Senjuan's hospitality stood out. We had a truly comfortable time until our departure. Even my husband, who is particular about baths and meals, was fully satisfied. The thoughtful gestures for our special occasion were also greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.     Wonderful Accommodation

    The staff ran from the parking area to guide us to the accommodation. The entrance had a traditional charm, and we were welcomed with a view of the garden while waiting for check-in. The room featured floor-to-ceiling glass windows facing the valley, offering breathtaking views. The private open-air bath in the room had a stone backrest installed inside, making it very relaxing and enjoyable. The large public bath was on a rotation system after meals, allowing us to experience different atmospheres. For dinner, we chose Wagyu beef. The stone-grilled dish was aromatic and tender, and other dishes were perfectly prepared using high-quality ingredients—truly impressive. As it was served in a private dining room, we enjoyed our meal time to the fullest. Exploring the garden with its reading area and footbath spot was delightful as well. Being greeted by bell crickets added an elegant touch to our stay. We deeply appreciated all of the thoughtful details unique to this accommodation.     It was a wonderful stay.

    This was my first stay at this accommodation, and I had a very satisfying experience. When I requested the shuttle service before 1 PM, they kindly accommodated me, and I was able to relax in the lobby upon arrival. The scent of incense filled the facility, and the room was clean and comfortable. The bath temperature was just right—not too hot—and I appreciated that drinks in the refrigerator were complimentary. Enjoying a drink while soaking in the private open-air bath in my room felt like pure luxury. The meals were delicious, featuring local ingredients that truly stood out. The staff members were all wonderful; many seemed young but conveyed warmth with their smiles and attentiveness. The female staff member who guided me during check-in appeared a bit nervous but left a great impression with her earnestness. During dinner, the male staff member who attended to me brightened up my solo trip with his cheerful demeanor. I would love to visit again in winter!

    Despite informing about an earlier arrival time, there was no one at the reception, and we were left in a difficult situation with our shoes still on. Although the hostess came to apologize, the issue stemmed from a phone conversation where we were asked if pickup service was needed. We replied that it wasn’t necessary and mentioned leaving Doai Station. Upon arriving at the Ryokan, we were unsure if this was indeed the right place as there was no one at reception. Being our second visit, we had completely forgotten how things worked here. We expected staff to be present at the entrance but found no one, which left us very disappointed. Leaving our shoes on and declining pickup service turned out to be quite inconvenient for us—something we've now learned from this experience.

    Last summer's severe thunderstorm just before arrival was a stark contrast to this visit, where we were blessed with clear skies and a stunning view of Mount Tanigawa from the lobby. As others have mentioned, the balance of comfort in the room and hospitality was perfect. Amid reports of intense heatwaves, the simple elegance of flowers like Japanese burnet displayed in the rooms and hallways reminded us that autumn had already begun. The subtle seasonal touches were delightful. For meals, we enjoyed freshwater fish such as sashimi made from rainbow trout, soup with Japanese char, salt-grilled sweetfish, dried sweetfish for breakfast the next morning, and carp—truly savoring flavors unique to Gunma Prefecture. A highlight for geology enthusiasts was the rock specimens displayed in the dressing area of the large public bath (a rare feature for any accommodation!). Mount Tanigawa boasts complex geology with sedimentary rocks as well as granodiorite and metamorphic rocks. The river stones flowing down are equally diverse. Before experiencing these river stones underfoot at the open-air bath, you can "study" them through these samples—a fun way to enhance your onsen experience by identifying different types like "this is XX rock" or "that is YY rock," adding an educational twist reminiscent of a TV show exploration! I hope to visit again during snow-viewing season!

    It takes too long for meals to be served.

    It took about 30 minutes for the first dish to be served after the reserved dinner time, and a total of 1 hour for the second dish to arrive. Breakfast was similar, taking about 20 minutes from the reserved time for food to be served. Since bread and croissants were pre-served, I started eating them first to satisfy my hunger. At this price range, it seems standard to serve dishes according to the guest's eating pace. Additionally, if preferred dinner or breakfast times are requested in advance, there might be ways to prepare accordingly beforehand.

    Multiple Night Stay

    The weather was excellent on the second day as well. We enjoyed breathtaking views from Doai Station to Tanigawadake Yohho and extended our walk to Ichinokurasawa for more stunning scenery. The service remained exceptional, and the food was delicious. However, I wish my wife's birthday had been celebrated a bit more. The refrigerator situation was unchanged, but we were able to relax thoroughly. We will definitely visit again!

    A Journey with Stunning Views

    This was an accommodation I had wanted to visit for a long time. After taking a train, bullet train, and bus, I finally arrived at the accommodation. The journey went more smoothly than expected. The weather was perfect, and I was immediately captivated by the breathtaking view. Then, I was shown to my room. It was a compact yet comfortable room with a great view of Mount Tanigawa from the window, which was wonderful. The bathwater had a smooth texture; it felt hot on the surface but became fine after mixing it. However, it was disappointing that the temperature control of the refrigerator in the room wasn't great and drinks were not cold enough. The staff provided excellent service, and the food was incredibly delicious. I've found an accommodation I'd love to revisit again someday—thank you very much!

    We strongly encourage you to consider areas for improvement.

    We appreciate the heartfelt hospitality provided by the staff, but there were some governance issues that need improvement. As a top-class Ryokan, we strongly hope for these improvements. First, the main phone line was not functioning properly. A few days before our stay, I missed a call and immediately called back several times but only reached an automated callback request message without being able to resolve anything. Even after contacting through IKYU.com, it took about an hour to finally get connected. I was told that they would investigate the cause and report it to their superior for consideration of improvements. On the day of our stay, when we were running late for our pick-up at Minakami Station and tried calling to inform them so as not to inconvenience anyone, again we could only reach an automated callback request message without getting through. Fortunately, we arrived on time as planned and avoided any issues; however, experiencing this twice left us extremely frustrated. Another guest whom we happened to meet at the Ryokan also shared similar complaints. Second is inadequate pre-arrival room inspection for guests. The entrance door of the private open-air bath in our room was labeled as automatic but was broken and had to be operated manually without prior explanation about its malfunctioning state. Additionally, a light bulb had burned out which required us to request replacement during our stay. Thirdly regarding dinner: While enjoying local ingredients with well-prepared flavors overall—despite no use of particularly luxurious ingredients—I noticed something minor yet curious on the menu card where instead of listing a head chef’s name under "Prepared by," it simply stated "Culinary Team."     An Accommodation You'll Want to Stay at Again

    We stayed as a family of four. The garden approach, the atmosphere inside the accommodation, the room setup, the staff's perfect balance of attentiveness without being intrusive, overall thoughtfulness and consideration, meals, and onsen were all outstanding. Dinner was particularly wonderful—not relying on luxurious ingredients but instead maximizing seasonal ones. The portion sizes were just right. Breakfast was also well-balanced and enjoyable. The bath area had two large public baths; due to the rotation schedule, we couldn't use the one with a Finnish-style sauna, but the onsen itself was excellent and very satisfying. From beside the reading pavilion, you can descend to a valley accessible only to guests staying at this accommodation—allowing us to enjoy playing in the river with our children without worrying about others watching us. We were very satisfied! We also enjoyed playing with soap bubbles in the grassy garden—it was simply fantastic. We would love to visit again during another season!

    The articles introducing Senjuan often feature beautifully lit architecture alongside the words "Relais & Châteaux." With such descriptions and price range, I expected a luxurious experience amidst nature when I made my reservation. However, my stay turned out to be different from what I initially anticipated. The creaking floors, peeling paint on the walls, a strange smell in front of the room, and water leaking from the base of the shower hose. The Onsen in the room cooled quickly, requiring staff assistance to adjust its temperature. I did wonder if this was acceptable for this price range... but as time passed, these issues felt insignificant. First and foremost, all staff members were incredibly sincere and dedicated. Their hospitality was warm and comforting without being overbearing. Then there was the food—absolutely delightful. Instead of relying on obvious luxury ingredients like caviar or foie gras, they showcased local delicacies with flavorful dishes that reflected pride in their mountain's bounty. The grilled ayu fish was particularly exceptional! After dinner, returning to my room revealed perfectly arranged bedding tailored to my preferences along with a late-night snack waiting for me—a gesture that felt like being cared for by family at home or indulging in grandma’s loving insistence to eat more food! It brought me so much joy. Even those initial facility shortcomings became endearing over time; they seemed to ease my tension built up from city life effortlessly—whether intentional or not—and left me feeling unexpectedly comforted by their imperfections. Additionally, I loved spending over an hour at the large public bath—it felt almost private most of the time! Truly amazing. When weather improved later during my stay—I wandered around their expansive grounds discovering little surprises everywhere like treasure hunting designed purely for guests' enjoyment. Sitting quietly early morning while gazing upon stunning Mount Tanigawa filled me with profound gratitude; it reminded me what true luxury feels like deep within one's soul. I will definitely return again someday!

    Service and hospitality at its finest accommodation

    The service was attentive to every detail, the bath was intricately designed, and the room was absolutely excellent. However, since this accommodation is so perfect, I had high expectations for the meals. Unfortunately, they lacked flair or a surprising presentation and felt like ordinary dishes. Given how outstanding this accommodation is, I hope more creativity can be put into the meals in the future. It was disappointing.
